In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Alif-Lam-Ra. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed]. These are The Verses of The Book and a clear Quran.
2. [In the Hereafter] disbelievers will wish that they had been Muslims.
3. Let them [i.e., disbelievers] eat and enjoy themselves, and let them be deceived by [false] hopes. Then they will come to know [their terrible end].
4. And We never destroyed a town except at its appointed time.
5. No nation can advance its appointed time [of destruction], nor can it delay it.
6. And they said [to Muhammad], “O you to whom The Quran has been revealed! You are indeed a mad man.”
7. “Why do you not bring us angels [to testify that you are really a Messenger], if you are one of the truthful?”
8. We do not send angels but with the truth: [either the Message or torment]. In this case, they [i.e., disbelievers] would have no respite.
9. Verily, it is We Who have sent down The Quran, and, verily, We will guard it [against corruption].
10. And We sent Messengers before you [Muhammad] to the communities of ancient times.
11. And never did a Messenger come to them but they [i.e., disbelievers] mocked at him.
12. Thus We made it [i.e., disbelief] dwell in the hearts of wrong-doers.
13. They do not believe in it [i.e., The Quran], and what happened to disbelievers before is made clear to all.
14. And if We had opened for them a gate in the heaven and they had continued to ascend up through it,
15. They would have said, “It is only because our eyes have been closed or in fact we have been bewitched.”
16. And We have placed stars in the heaven and beautified it for beholders.
17. And We have guarded it from every outcast devil,
18. Except the devil that steals hearing; then it is followed by a clear flaming fire.
19. And the earth We have extended so widely, and We have placed in it firm mountains, and We have grown in it all kinds of plants in due measure.
20. And We have prepared provisions for you and for cattle, which you do not provide.
21. And there is nothing but We have its stores, and We do not send it down but in a known measure.
22. And We send winds to fill clouds with water, then We send down water from the sky, then We give it to you as a drink, and you are not in charge of storing it [i.e., water].
23. And indeed it is We Who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritors [, for all return to Allah].
24. And We know of you those who are dead, and We [also] know those who are not born yet.
25. And, verily, your Lord gathers them [i.e., all mankind] together. Verily, He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
26. And We created man from dry clay from wet mud.
27. And We created jinn before from the flame of fire.
28. And [remember] when your Lord, [O Muhammad], said to angels, “I am going to create a human from dry clay from wet mud.”
29. “When I create him [i.e., Adam] and breathe life into him, then fall in prostration to him.”
30. And so all the angels did prostrate themselves [before Adam],
31. But Satan refused to be one of the prostrators.
32. He [i.e., Allah] said, “O Satan! Why did you not prostrate yourself?”
33. He said, “I am not to prostrate myself to a human, whom You have created from dry clay from wet mud.”
34. Allah said [to Satan], “Get out from here; you are really cursed.”
35. “The curse is truly upon you until the Day of Recompense.”
36. Satan said, “O my Lord!Give me a respite until the Day of Resurrection.”
37. Allah said, “You are one of those given a respite,”
38. “Until the appointed time.”
39. Satan said, “O my Lord! Because you sent me astray, I shall tempt them [i.e., mankind] to sin on the earth, and I shall send them all astray,”
40. “Except your chosen [sincere] servants.”
41. Allah said, “This is the Way that leads straight to Me.”
42. “You have no authority over My sincere servants, except those of evil-doers who follow you [i.e., Satan].”
43. “Verily, Hell will be the promised place for all of them.”
44. “It has seven gates, each of which is assigned for a special type of sinners.”
45. As for the pious, they will be in Gardens and water-springs [i.e., Paradise].
46. [It will be said to them], “Enter it [i.e., Paradise] in peace and security.”
47. And We shall remove all grudge from their hearts, and they will be brothers facing one another [in Paradise].
48. No fatigue will ever touch them, and nor will they be asked to leave it [i.e., Paradise].
49. [O Muhammad!] Tell my servants that I am the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful,
50. And that My torture is the painful torture.
51. And tell them about Abraham’s guests,
52. When they entered to him and said, “Peace.” Abraham said, “We are afraid of you.”
53. They [i.e., the angels] said [to Abraham], “Do not be afraid! We bear to you the glad news of a wise son [i.e., Isaac].”
54. Abraham said, “Do you give me such news inspite of my old age? What news are you giving me then?”
55. They [i.e., the angels] said, “We have told you the truth, so do not be one of those who despair.”
56. He said, “Who despairs of his Lord’s Mercy except those who have gone astray?”
57. He said, “What is then the matter with you, O Messengers?”
58. They [i.e., the angels] said, “We are sent to a people of wrong-doers,”
59. “Except the family of Lot, all of whom we are going to save,”
60. “With the exception of his wife, whose destruction has been decreed.”
61. When the Messengers [i.e., the angles] came to the family of Lot,
62. He [i.e., Lot] said, “You are unknown to me.”
63. They said, “We have come with what they [i.e., your people] used to doubt [i.e., torture].”
64. “And we have brought you the truth [i.e., destruction of disbelievers], and we surely tell [you] the truth.”
65. “So leave in the night with your family, [O Lot], and go behind them, and none of you should look back [when you hear the Cry], and go where you are commanded to go.”
66. And We made this decree known to him [i.e., Lot], that these sinners [among Lot’s people] will be utterly destroyed by morning.
67. And the people of the town came rejoicing [at the arrival of handsome young men, who were actually angels].
68. He [i.e., Lot] said, “These are my guests, so do not disgrace me.” 69. “And fear Allah and do not shame me.”
70. They [i.e., Lot’s people] said, “Did we not warn you against receiving guests here?”
71. He [i.e., Lot] said, “These [i.e., the nation’s girls] are like my daughters if you want to marry.”
72. Verily, by your life, [O Muhammad], they are playing around in their error.
73. Then the Awful Cry took them [i.e., Lot’s people] at sunrise.
74. So We turned it [i.e., the town of Sodom in Palestine] upside down, and We rained down on it baked-clay stones.
75. Truly, in that there are lessons for those who understand.
76. And Sodom was on the highroad [where the Dead sea is now].
77. In that there is a Sign [i.e., a lesson] for believers, indeed.
78. And the dwellers of the wood [i.e., the people of Madyan, to whom Prophet Shu’aib was sent,] were wrong-doers.
79. Therefore, We punished them, and both [i.e., Lot’s people and Shu’aib’s people] were on the [same] open highway.
80. And the dwellers of the Rocky Tract [i.e., the people of Thamud, to whom Prophet Salih was sent] belied the Messengers.
81. And We showed them Our Signs [such as Salih’s camel]; yet, they turned their backs to them.
82. And they used to carve dwellings in the mountains enjoying security.
83. Then the Cry took them suddenly in the early morning.
84. And what they used to earn did not avail them.
85. And We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them except with truth and justice. And the Hour is certainly coming, so, [O Muhammad], forgive them [i.e., disbelievers and polytheists] in a gracious way.
86. Verily, your Lord is the All-Knowing Creator.
87. And We have given you [Muhammad] the Seven Repeated Verses [i.e., the Opening Chapter of The Quran] and The Grand Quran.
88. Do not look at what We have bestowed on some of them [i.e., disbelievers], and do not grieve over them [for their disbelief], and lower your wings to believers [i.e., treat them gently].
89. And say, “Truly I am the plain warner.”
90. As We have sent down on the dividers [i.e., those who allied against the Messenger],
91. Who made The Quran parts [: they believed in some and disbelieved in some],
92. By your Lord, [O Muhammad], We will hold them all accountable
93. For what they used to do.
94. So call openly to what you are commanded [i.e., propagation of Islam], and turn away from polytheists.
95. We will defend you against those who mock at you.
96. Who take another god with Allah; they will come to know [the result of their disbelief].
97. And We know that you feel unhappy at what they say.
98. So glorify your Lord, and be among those who themselves [in prayer to Allah].
99. And worship your lord until death comes.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. The Command of Allah is coming [i.e., the Hour, soon], so do not hasten it. Glorified and Exalted He is above what they take as partners [with Him].
2. He sends down angels with Revelation through His Command to whomever of his servants He wills [saying], “Warn people that there is no god but Me, so fear Me [i.e., obey Me].”
3. He has created the heavens and the earth with truth. Exalted He is above the partners that they take [with Him].
4. He has created man from a weak mixed drop, and then behold, this very man has become a plain enemy [of his Creator].
5. And He has created the cattle [i.e., camels, cows, and sheep], by which there is warmth for you as well as other benefits, and of which you eat.
6. And in them there is beauty for you [too] when they come back from pastures [in evenings] and when they go to pastures [in mornings].
7. And they carry your loads to a land which otherwise you would not reach except with great trouble. Verily, your Lord is Most Kind, Most Merciful.
8. [And He created] horses, mules, and donkeys for you to ride and to take as an adornment. And He creates what you do not know.
9. And it is Allah Who shows the Right Path, and there are some ways that are not straight [i.e., ways other than Islam]. And had Allah willed, He would have guided you all.
10. It is He Who sends down water from the sky, from which you drink and from which plants grow and become food for cattle.
11. With it [i.e., rain], He causes to grow for you crops, olives, date-palms, grapes, and all kinds of fruit. Verily in this, there is a sign for people who contemplate.
12. And He has subjected to you [i.e., mankind] the night, the day, the sun, and the moon. Stars are also subjected by His Command.
13. And He has [also] created many beings of different colors [of plants and animals]. In this there is a Sign for people who remember.
14. And it is He Who subjected the sea for you to eat of it tender meat and bring out of it ornaments to wear. And you see ships sailing through so that you may seek His Bounties [through trading and traveling] and so that you may thank [Him].
15. And He has erected firm mountains on the earth, lest it should shake with you, and rivers and roads, so that you may be guided.
16. And [He has created] landmarks [in the day] and stars [in the night] so that they [i.e., people] may be guided.
17. Is the One Who creates like one who does not create? Do you not remember?
18. And if you try to count Allah’s Bounties, you will never be able to do so. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
19. And Allah knows what you conceal and what you reveal.
20. And those that they [i.e., polytheists] invoke besides Allah do not create anything, but they themselves are created.
21. [They are] dead, not alive, and they [i.e., idols] do not know when they will be raised up.
22. Your god is One God. As for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, their hearts deny monotheism, and they are too arrogant [to worship Allah].
23. Certainly, Allah knows what they conceal and what they reveal. Verily, Allah does not like those who are arrogant.
24. And if it is said to them [i.e., disbelievers], “What has your Lord revealed?”, they say, “Tales of the men of old.”
25. Let them [i.e., disbelievers] bear their burdens [i.e., sins] in full on the Day of Resurrection and some of the burdens of those whom they misled unknowingly. What an evil burden they bear!
26. Many before them planned plots [against Messengers], but Allah destroyed their structure right from its foundation, and the roof collapsed from above them, and torture came to them from where they did not perceive.
27. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, Allah will disgrace them and say, “Where are My [so-called] partners that you used to dispute [with believers] for?” Men of knowledge will say, “Disgrace and torment are today upon disbelievers.”
28. Those whose souls angels take while they are doing wrong to themselves [i.e., not believing in Allah and committing all kinds of sins and crimes] will falsely submit and say, “We have done no evil deeds.” Angels will reply, “Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of what you used to do.”
29. “So enter the gates of Hell, and dwell in it forever. What an evil abode for the arrogant it is!”
30. And it will be said to those who are pious, “What has your Lord revealed?” They will say, “A blessing [i.e., The Quran].” For those who do good in this life there is good, and the Hereafter is certainly better. And how excellent the abode of the pious will be!
31. The Gardens of Eternity [i.e., Paradise] they will enter, under which rivers flow, where they can get whatever they desire. Thus Allah rewards the pious.
32. Those whose souls angels take while they are in a pious state will be addressed by angels saying, “Peace [upon you]. Enter Paradise for the good deeds which you used to do.”
33. Do they [i.e., disbelievers] wait for anything but angels coming to them [to take away their souls] or the coming of your Lord’s Command [i.e., the Day of Resurrection]? Thus those before them did. And Allah did not wrong them, but themselves they did wrong [by disbelief and disobedience].
34. Then they were made to pay for their evil deeds, and they were punished for what they used to mock at.
35. And those who took partners with Allah said, “Had Allah willed, neither we nor our fathers would have worshipped anything besides Him, nor would we have disallowed anything without His Command.” And so did those before them. But is the duty of Messengers anything but to clearly convey the Message?
36. And We sent from among every nation a Messenger proclaiming [to his people], “Worship Allah, and avoid evil.” Some of them Allah guided, but some chose to be astray. So go around in the land, and see what the end of beliars was.
37. If you, [O Muhammad], care for their guidance, Allah certainly does not guide him whom He has sent astray. And they will have no helpers.
38. And they [i.e., polytheists] swear by Allah their strongest oaths that Allah will not raise up those who die. What they say is not true, for Allah’s Promise is always true, but most people do not know.
39. [Allah will raise up the dead] so as to make clear to them the truth of that which they used to differ in and so that disbelievers may know that they were liars.
40. Verily, if We intend [to create anything], Our Word is not more than saying to it, “Be,” and it is.
41. As for those who emigrated for the Cause of Allah after they had been wronged, We will give them a good residence in this life, and the reward of the Hereafter will be still greater, if only they knew.
42. [They are] those who remained patient [at disbelievers’ harm], and in their Lord they put their trust.
43. And We did not send [as Messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], but men to whom We sent revelation. So ask, [O pagans of Makkah], the people of the Scripture if you do not know.
44. [We sent the Messengers] with Clear Signs and the Books. And We sent down to you, [O Muhammad], The Quran so that you may make clear to people what has been sent down to them and so that they may reason out.
45. Do those who plan evil plots [against Islam] rest secure that Allah will not sink them into the earth or that the punishment [of Allah] will not seize them where they do not expect?
46. Or He may punish them in the night or the day, for they cannot escape Allah’s punishment.
47. Or He may punish them when they are in a state of fear. Truly, your Lord is Most Kind, Most Merciful.
48. Do they not see all that Allah has created with their shadows on the right and the left, prostrating themselves to Allah in full submission?
49. And all those in the heavens and the earth of moving creatures prostrate themselves to Allah, and so do angels, with no arrogance.
50. They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are ordered [to do].
51. And Allah said, “Do not take two gods [in worship]. There is only One God, so Me you must fear.”
52. And to Him belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. And to Him is permanent submission. Do you fear any other than Allah?
53. And all the bounties which you have are from Allah. And when some harm touches you, you earnestly ask for His Help.
54. Then, when He removes the harm away from you, surprisingly, some of you associate partners with their Lord,
55. And deny what We have given them. So enjoy yourselves [for a while], and then you will see [your end].
56. And they [i.e., polytheists] make for what they do not know [i.e., idols] a portion of what We have provided them. By Allah, you shall be held accountable for what you used to fabricate [i.e., your lies against Allah].
57. And they [i.e., polytheists and idolaters] assign daughters to Allah, Glory is to Him, and to themselves [they assign] what they desire [i.e., sons].
58. And if one of them is told of a female newborn, his face becomes dark, and he becomes filled with anger and grief.
59. He hides himself from people because of the bad news of which he has been informed. He wonders whether he will keep her alive despite disgrace [according to him] or bury her in earth. How evil their judgment is!
60. For those who do not believe in the Hereafter is the defective description, and for Allah is the highest description. And He is the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.
61. And if Allah punished people for their wrongdoing, he would not leave on the earth any moving creature [including humans], but He delays them for a fixed term. And when this term comes, they can neither advance it nor delay it one single hour.
62. They [i.e., polytheists] assign to Allah what they hate [i.e., daughters and partners]. And their tongues repeat the lie that theirs will be Paradise. In fact, theirs will be the Fire, and in it they will be left neglected.
63. By Allah, We sent Messengers to nations before you, [O Mohammad], but Satan made fair-seeing their deeds to them. He [i.e., Satan] is their helper today [i.e., in this life], and they will have a painful punishment.
64. And We have not sent down the Book [i.e., The Quran] to you [Muhammad] but that you may make clear to them that in which they differ, and as guidance and mercy to people who believe.
65. And Allah sends down from the sky water, with which He gives life to the earth after its death. In this there is surely a Sign for people who listen [to what Allah says].
66. In the cattle [i.e., cows, camels, and sheep], there is a lesson for you, indeed. We give you a drink of that which is in their bellies, from between excretions and blood, milk that is pure and palatable to drinkers.
67. And from the fruits of date- palms and grapes, you derive strong drinks [before prohibition] and a good provision. Truly, in this there is a Sign for people of wisdom.
68. And your Lord inspires bees [saying], “Make your habitat in mountains, trees, and in what they [i.e., people] erect.”
69. “Then eat of all fruits, and follow your Lord’s ways that are made easy [for you].” From their bellies comes out a drink of different colors [i.e., honey], in which people find healing. In this there is certainly a Sign for people who think.
70. And Allah has created you, and then He will cause you to die. And some of you are made to live too long so that they may know nothing after knowing [much]. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, Almighty.
71. And Allah has preferred some of you above some in wealth and properties. Then, those who are preferred do not take their slaves as partners to their wealth [, so why do they take partners with Allah?] Why do they deny the Grace of Allah?
72. And Allah has created for you from yourselves wives and has made for you from your wives children and grandchildren and granted you good provision. Why then do they [i.e., polytheists] believe in false gods [such as idols and partners] and deny the Grace of Allah [by attributing it to false partners]?
73. And they [i.e., polytheists] worship besides Allah what do not and cannot bring them any provision from the heavens [i.e., rain] or the earth [such as crops or plants].
74. So do not take partners or equals to Allah. And Allah does know, and you do not know.
75. Allah gives an example of two men: a disbeliever who is possessed by another and who has no power to do anything, and a believer whom We have granted a good provision, of which he spends secretly and openly. Can they be equal? Praise is due to Allah, but most of them [i.e., people] do not know.
76. And Allah gives an example of two men. One is dumb and can do nothing; he is a burden on his master; wherever he directs him, he brings no good; [this is the disbeliever]. Is this man equal to another man who commands justice and is on the Straight Path [i.e., a believer]?
77. And to Allah belongs the Unseen of the heavens and the earth. And the matter of the Hour is not but like a twinkling of the eye or even nearer. Verily, Allah is Able to do everything.
78. And Allah has brought you out from your mothers’ wombs knowing nothing. Then He has given you hearing, sight, and mind so that you may thank [Him].
79. Do they not see birds flying in the sky held [there] by none but Allah? Truly, in this there is a Sign for people who believe.
80. And Allah has made for you houses to dwell in, and has made for you from the cattle’s hides dwellings [i.e., tents], which you find light upon traveling and upon staying. And [He has made for you] of their wool [i.e., of sheep], their fur [i.e., of camels], and their hair [i.e., of goats] furnishings and articles [such as carpets and blankets], enjoyable for a while.
81. And Allah has made for you of what He has created shades [i.e., trees], and He has made for you shelters in mountains, and He has made for you clothes which protect you from heat [and cold] and shields which protect you during war. Thus Allah makes perfect His Grace to you so that you may submit [to Him, i. e., become Muslims].
82. But if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the Message clearly.
83. They know the Bounty of Allah and then they deny it, and most of them are disbelievers.
84. And when [i.e., on the Day of Resurrection] We raise up from every nation a witness [i.e., their Messenger], disbelievers are not then allowed [to apologize] nor to repent.
85. And when those wrong-doers see the torment [on the Day of Judgment], then it [i.e., the torment] will not be lightened to them, nor will it be delayed [for them].
86. And when those who took partners [with Allah] see their [so-called] partners, they will say, “Our Lord! These are our partners whom we used to invoke besides You.” But they [i.e., the partners] will immediately reply back, “Surely, you are liars.”
87. And on that Day, they will be in full submission to Allah, and their fabricated partners will vanish away from them.
88. Those who disbelieved and hindered [people] from the Way of Allah will receive torment added to torment for the corruption which they used to spread.
89. And [remember] the Day when We shall raise up from every nation a witness against them from among themselves. And We shall bring you, [O Muhammad], as a witness against these [people]. And We have sent down the Book [i.e., The Quran] to you as an explanation of everything, guidance, a mercy, and glad news to Muslims.
90. Verily, Allah commands [people] of justice, charity and helping relatives, and forbids all evil deeds, especially what is done publicly, and aggression [against others]. He preaches you so that you may remember [what is right and what is wrong].
91. And fulfill the Covenant of Allah if you make it. And do not break your oaths after confirming them when you have made Allah a Witness over you. Verily, Allah knows what you do.
92. And do not be like the one who undoes her spun thread after becoming so strong. Do not use your oaths as a means of deception among yourselves, [especially] to deceive a group that is more numerous. It is only a test by Allah. And, on the Day of Resurrection, He will surely make clear to you what you used to differ in.
93. Had Allah willed, He would have made you one nation, but He sends astray whoever wills[to be astray], and He guides whoever wills[to be guided]. And you will surely be held accountable for what you used to do.
94. And do not make your oaths as a means of deceit among yourselves, so one becomes a sinner after being a firm believer and tastes an evil punishment for hindering [people] from being on the Way of Allah, and, thus, you will have a painful punishment [in the Hereafter].
95. And do not purchase a small gain for the Covenant of Allah [i.e., faith in Allah]. Verily, what is with Allah [i.e., His reward] is better for you, if you know.
96. What is with you [in this life] has an end, but what is with Allah [i.e., Paradise] is everlasting. And We shall certainly reward those who are patient for the best of what they used to do [and thus forgive their minor sins].
97. Whoever does good, whether a male or a female, while in faith, We shall certainly give him a good life [in this world] and reward him for the best of what he used to do [in the Hereafter].
98. If you recite The Quran, seek refuge with Allah from the cursed Satan.
99. He [i.e., Satan] has no power over those who believe [in Allah] and place their trust in their Lord [i.e., Allah].
100. His power [i.e., Satan’s] is only over those who follow him and who join partners with Him [i.e., Allah].
101. And if We replace a Verse [of The Quran] with another, and Allah knows best what He sends down, they [i.e., disbelievers] say [to Muhammad], “You are only a liar.” No, but most of them do not know [the truth].
102. Say, [O Muhammad], that the Holy Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] has brought it [i.e., The Quran] from your Lord with truth so as to strengthen believers, and to bring guidance and glad news to Muslims.
103. And We know what they [i.e., polytheists] say, “He [i.e., Muhammad] is only taught by a man.” The tongue of the man to whom they refer is not Arabic, whereas the tongue [of The Quran] is clear Arabic.
104. Verily, those who do not believe in the Signs of Allah will not be guided by Allah, and they will have a painful torment.
105. Indeed, those who fabricate lies are the ones who do not believe in the Signs of Allah, and those are the liars.
106. Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief, except one forced to do so with his heart resting with faith, and whoever makes disbelief fair-seeming to someone, the anger of Allah will be on them, and theirs will be a great torment.
107. This is because they have preferred this worldly life to the Hereafter. And Allah does not guide those who are disbelievers.
108. Those are the ones on whose hearts, hearing, and sight Allah has set a seal. And those are the heedless.
109. Truly, in the Hereafter they will be the losers.
110. As for those who, after their alliance with disbelievers [for their weakness], emigrated [for the sake of Allah] and then strove and were patient [in their strife], your Lord is truly oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
111. [Remember] the Day when every person will come up trying to defend himself, and everyone will be paid in full for what he did, and they [i.e., people] will never be wronged.
112. And Allah gives an example of a town that was safe and secure, with provisions coming to it abundantly from everywhere. Then it denied the Bounties of Allah, so Allah made its people taste hunger and fear for what they used to do [i.e., Makkah denying Allah’s Message to Muhammad in the beginning].
113. A Messenger came to them from among themselves. They [i.e., the people of Makkah] belied him, and the punishment [of Allah] overtook them for their wrong-doing.
114. So eat of the lawful and good food which Allah has provided for you. And thank Allah for His Bounty if Him you worship.
115. Truly, He [i.e., Allah] has prohibited the meat of dead animals, blood, bacon, and any animal slaughtered for others than Allah. However, if necessity forces one [to eat of these] without intending disobedience or transgression, Allah is certainly Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
116. And do not falsely say, “This is allowed and this is disallowed,” in order to invent lies against Allah. Verily, those who invent lies against Allah will never succeed.
117. They will have a short passing enjoyment [in this life], and theirs will be a painful torment [in the Hereafter].
118. And to Jews We have forbidden what We have told you, [O Muhammad], before. And We have not wronged them, but themselves they used to wrong.
119. As for those who do evil deeds because of ignorance and then repent afterwards and do good deeds, your Lord is certainly Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
120. Abraham was surely a leader obedient to Allah, and he was not a polytheist.
121. He was grateful for the Favors of Allah. He [i.e., Allah] chose him and guided him to the Straight Way.
122. And We gave him [i.e., Abraham] good in this world, and in the Hereafter he will certainly be one of the righteous.
123. Then We revealed to you,[O Muhammad], to follow the pure religion of Abraham, who was never a polytheist.
124. The Sabbath [i.e., Saturday] was only assigned for those who differed about it [i.e., the Jews, who refused Friday]. And your Lord will judge among them on the Day of Resurrection concerning what they used to differ in.
125. Invite [people] to your Lord’s Way, [O Muhammad], with wisdom and fair preaching, and argue with them so gently. Verily, your Lord knows best who has gone away from His Way, and He knows best those who are guided.
126. And if you [i.e., Muslims] punish [your enemy], let your punishment be equal to what they did to you. But if you endure [and forgive], that will be better for those who are patient.
127. And, [O Muhammad], be patient, and your patience is always by Allah’s will. And do not grieve over them [i.e., polytheists and disbelievers], and do not be saddened by what they plot [against you].
128. Verily, Allah is with those who are pious and those who are righteous.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Glory is to Him Who took His servant [Muhammad] for a journey by night from the Holy Mosque [at Makkah] to the Far Mosque [at Jerusalem], the area around which We have blessed, so as to let him see of Our Signs. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.
2. And We gave Moses the Scripture and made it guidance for the people of Israel [saying], “Do not take any protector besides Me.”
3. O offspring of those whom We carried with Noah [at the Flood]! He [i.e., Noah] was a servant so grateful [to Allah].
4. And We have decreed for the people of Israel in the Scripture that they would do mischief in the land twice and become arrogant tyrants.
5. When the first promise came, We sent against you [i.e., the people of Israel] servants of Ours skilled at warfare, who could occupy your land and homes, and thus the promise was fulfilled.
6. Then We made you victorious over them, and we provided you with wealth and children and made you more numerous in manpower.
7. If you do good, it is for yourselves; and if you do evil, it is against yourselves. When the second promise comes, We will send them [i.e., Muslims] to disgrace your faces and enter the [Far] Mosque [of Jerusalem] as they entered it before and to destroy you utterly.
8. [As We said in The Torah], “It may be that your Lord may grant you Mercy. But if you return [to mischief-doing], We will return [to punishing you]. And We have made Hell a prison for disbelievers.”
9. Verily, this Quran guides to the best [way], and it gives the glad news that believers who do good deeds will certainly have a great reward [from their Lord].
10. As for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have prepared a painful punishment for them.
11. And man invokes [Allah] for evil [sometimes when in anger] as he does for good. And man is hasty.
12. And We have made the night and the day as two Signs. So We have made darkness [and the moon] as the sign of the night, and the bright light [of the sun] as the sign of the day so that you may seek bounties from your Lord and know the number of years [i.e., measure time] and reckoning. And We have explained everything in detail.
13. And We have tied every man’s record of deeds to his neck, and on the Day of Resurrection We will bring out his record [of deeds] wide open for him.
14. [It will be said to him,] “Read your record. You are sufficient as a reckoner against yourself today.”
15. Whoever goes right does so for himself, and whoever goes astray does so against himself. And no one bears the [sin] burden of another. And We never punish unless We send a Messenger.
16. And if We decree to destroy a town, We command the rich people of it [to obey Us], but they transgress in it, and thus the word [of torment] becomes justifiable against it. Then We utterly destroy it.
17. And how many a generation We have destroyed since Noah. And your Lord is Sufficient as the All-Knower and the All-Beholder of people’s sins.
18. Whoever desires the enjoyment of this worldly life [only], We grant whatever We will to whomever We will, and then We lead him into Hell, where he is tortured in disgrace and rejection.
19. And whoever desires the Hereafter and works for it as he should while in faith, his work will be rewarded [by Allah].
20. To each one of these [desiring the worldly life] and of those [desiring the Hereafter] We grant the Bounties of your Lord. And the Bounties of your Lord cannot be forbidden.
21. See how We prefer one above the other [in this life], and the Hereafter will certainly have greater differences in ranks and preference.
22. Do not take another god with Allah, lest you should be dishonored and forsaken [in Hell].
23. And your Lord has ordained that you should not worship but Him and that you should be dutiful to your parents. If either of them or both reach old age in your life, do not say to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them, and address them so honorably.
24. And lower to them the wing of submission out of mercy and say, “O my Lord! Be merciful to them [in their life and after their death] as they brought me up when I was young.”
25. Your Lord knows what is in your hearts. If you are righteous, He is Oft-Forgiving to those who return to Him in repentance.
26. And give your relatives, the needy, and wayfarers their due rights, but do not spend [your wealth] wastefully.
27. Surely, spendthrifts are the brothers of devils, and Satan is always ungrateful to his Lord.
28. And if you turn away from them [, for you do not have what to give] waiting for Allah’s Bounties, then say to them soft and kind words.
29. And do not let your hand be tied to your neck [like a miser], nor should you stretch it too extravagantly [like a spendthrift], so you become blameworthy and helpless.
30. Verily, your Lord widens provision to whomever He wills and straitens it to whomever He wills. Surely, He is the All-Knower and the All-Seer of His servants.
31. And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We will provide them and you. Your killing them is surely a great sin.
32. And do not approach the unlawful sexual intercourse; it is surely a great sin and an evil way [to Hell].
33. And do not kill any person disallowed by Allah to be killed except in justice. And whoever is killed unjustly, We have given his heir the authority [to demand killing the killer, or forgive for blood-money, or forgive for nothing]. But he [i.e., the heir] must not go beyond [lawful] limits [such as killing the killer’s relatives]. Truly, he is supported [by Islamic laws].
34. And do not come close to the orphan’s wealth except for investing it until he reaches the age of adulthood. And fulfill your covenants [with people], for you are surely accountable for your covenants.
35. And give full measure if you measure, and weigh in straight justice. That is better [for you in this life] and better in the Hereafter.
36. And do not say, [O man], anything which you have no knowledge about. Truly, each of the hearing, the sight, and the mind will be held accountable [before Allah].
37. And do not walk on the earth in arrogance. Certainly, neither can you penetrate the earth, nor can you be as high as mountains.
38. The evils of such deeds are hateful to your Lord.
39. This is some of what your Lord, [O Muhammad], has revealed to you of Wisdom. So, [you man], do not take another god as a partner with Allah, lest you should be cast in Hell blameworthy and rejected [from Allah’s Mercy].
40. Has your Lord, then, given you sons and taken for Himself some angels as daughters [as you pagans claim]? What you say is really something awful.
41. And We have explained in this Quran [all sorts of promises and warnings] so that they [i.e., people] may remember, but it increases them [i.e., disbelievers] in their aversion [i.e., turning away].
42. Say, [O Muhammad, to those polytheists], “If there had been gods besides Him, as they [falsely] claim, then they would surely have sought a way [to become closer] to the Lord of the Throne.”
43. Glory is to Him, and Exalted He is high above what they [i.e., polytheists] say.
44. The seven heavens, the earth, and whoever in them do glorify Him, and there is nothing but glorifies His Praise, but you do not understand their glorification. Verily, He is Ever-Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving.
45. And when you, [O Muhammad], recite The Quran, We put an invisible screen between you and those who disbelieve in the Hereafter.
46. And We have put coverings on their [disbelievers’] hearts, lest they should understand it, and [We have caused] deafness in their ears. And when you mention your Lord in The Quran without a partner, they run away in extreme hatred.
47. We [i.e., Allah] know best what they [i.e., polytheists] listen to when they listen to you. And when they are in privacy, [those] wrong-doers say, “You are following none but a bewitched man.”
48. See, [O Muhammad], what examples they [i.e., polytheists] have set for you, and thus they have gone astray and will never find the [Straight] Way.
49. And they [i.e., disbelievers] said, “If we become bones and soil, are we then raised up as a new creation?”
50. Say, [O Muhammad, to them], “Be stones or iron,”
51. “Or whatever you may be.” They will say, “Who will resurrect us?” Say, [O Muhammad], “The One Who created you first.” Then they will shake their heads in mockery and say, “When is that?” Say, “It may be close.”
52. The Day when He calls you [i.e., on the Day of Resurrection], you will answer His Call in full obedience and think that you have stayed only for a while.
53. And say to my servants [i.e., true believers] that they should say the best words [to one another], for Satan desires to cause conflict among them. Surely, Satan is a plain enemy to man.
54. Your Lord, [O people], knows you best. If He wills, He will grant you His Mercy, or if He wills, He will punish you. And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], as a guardian over them [i.e., you are only a Warner].
55. And your Lord knows best those in the heavens and on the earth [concerning their ranks in obedience or disobedience to Him]. And We have preferred some prophets above some, and to David We gave The Psalms.
56. Say, [O Muhammad, to polytheists], “Invoke those whom you have taken as partners besides Him. They can neither remove the harm from you nor direct it to another person.”
57. Those whom they [i.e., polytheists] invoke [besides Allah] desire for themselves the means to nearness to their Lord, hope for His Mercy, and fear His torment. Truly, your Lord’s torment is to be feared.
58. Every town [that indulges in usury, sins, and unlawful sexual intercourse] We will destroy before the Day of Resurrection or We will severely punish. This is already written in the Book [of Our Decrees].
59. And nothing stops Us from sending [more] Signs [i.e., miracles] but that people before belied them [the Signs]. And We sent [the people of] Thamud the camel as a Clear Sign, but they denied it [and killed it]. We do not send Signs except to warn [people].
60. And [remember] when We told you [Muhammad], “Your Lord has certainly protected you from people [i.e., disbelievers].” And We made the vision which We showed you [on the Night Journey] nothing but a trial for people, and so is the case with the accursed tree in The Quran. And We frighten [disbelievers by threats], but it only makes them indulge more and more in disobedience.
61. And [remember] when We said to angels, “Prostrate yourselves to Adam.” And all of them did except Satan, who said, “Shall I prostrate myself to him whom You created from clay?”
62. He [i.e., Satan] said, “Do You see this one [i.e., Adam], whom You have honored above me? If You delay me until the Day of Resurrection, I will mislead [all] his offspring except a few.”
63. He [i.e., Allah] said, “Go [i.e., you are delayed]. You and whoever follows you will dwell in Hell, your full recompense [for your disobedience].”
64. “And fool whomever you can fool of them with your call, attack them with your cavalry and infantry [i.e., using all your evil skills], share with them their wealth and children [by unlawful temptation], and make all types of promises to them.” But Satan’s promises are not but deceit.
65. “Truly, you [i.e., Satan] have no power over My servants [i.e., true believers]. And your Lord is All-Sufficient as a Guardian.”
66. It is your Lord Who drives ships for you through the sea so that you may seek of His Bounty. Verily, He is Most Merciful to you.
67. And when harm touches you on the sea, those partners whom you invoke [besides Him] vanish [from your hearts] except Him. And when He brings you safe to the shore, you turn away [from Him]. Man is really ungrateful.
68. Do you [i.e., disbelievers] feel secure that He will not let a side of the land swallow you or send against you a violent sandstorm? Then, you will not find a guardian [to protect you].
69. Or do you [i.e., disbelievers] feel secure that He will not send you back to it [i.e., the sea] and then He will send against you a destructive wind which drowns you because of your disbelief? And then you will find no helper against Us.
70. And We have honored Adam’s children [i.e., mankind], and We have carried them on land [on such as cattle, horses, mules] and on sea [in ships], and We have provided them with good things [such as fruits, vegetables, meat], and We have preferred them above many of those whom We have created.
71. And [remember] the Day [of Resurrection] when We shall call everyone with his record of deeds. Whoever is given his record in his right hand, he reads his record [so happily], and he is not wronged in the least.
72. And whoever is blind in this [worldly life] will be blind and more astray in the Hereafter.
73. They [i.e., pagans and disbelievers] were about to tempt you, [O Muhammad], away from what We have revealed to you so as to fabricate against Us something else, and then they would certainly have taken you as a friend.
74. And if We had not strengthened you, you would have inclined to them a little.
75. In that case, We would have made you taste a double punishment in this life and a double punishment after death, and then you would have found no helper against Us.
76. And they were about to frighten you so as to drive you out from the land [i.e., Makkah]. In that case, they would have stayed after you only for a little time.
77. That is the rule with the Messengers whom We sent before you [i.e., the punishment of disbelievers], and you will never find an alteration to Our Rule.
78. Perform prayer from midday to the darkness of the night [i.e., the prayers of noon, afternoon, sunset, and night] and the dawn prayer. Verily, the dawn prayer is always witnessed [by day angels and night angels who exchange man observation].
79. And in some parts of the night,[O Muhammad], perform optional [additional] prayer so that your Lord will raise you to an honorable position [i.e., intercession for Muslims on the Day of Resurrection].
80. And say, [O Muhammad], “My Lord! Let my entry [to Al-Madeenah] be good; and let my exit [from Makkah] be good. And grant me from You a helpful authority.”
81. And say [when Muslims began destroying the idols around Al-Ka’ba], “Truth has come, and falsehood has vanished. Surely, falsehood must vanish.”
82. And We send down of The Quran what is a healing and a mercy to believers, but it increases the loss of wrong-doers.
83. And if We grant man [i.e., a disbeliever] of Our Bounties, he turns away [from Us] and becomes arrogant. And if evil touches him, he becomes desperate.
84. Say, [O Muhammad], “Everyone behaves according to his values, and your Lord knows best who is better guided.”
85. And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the spirit. Say, “The spirit is known only by my Lord, and what you have been given of knowledge is only a little.”
86. Had We willed, We would have taken away what We have revealed to you [Muhammad], and then you would have found no one to help you against Us.
87. [The Quran] is only a Mercy from your Lord, and His Grace upon you is always great.
88. Say, [O Muhammad], “If mankind and jinn worked together trying to make the like of this Quran, they would not be able to do so, even if they helped one another.”
89. And We have fully explained to people in this Quran every kind of evidence, but most people insist on rejecting the truth.
90. And they say [to Muhammad], “We shall never believe in you until you cause a spring to gush out from the earth for us,”
91. “Or you have a garden of date-palms and grapes, and cause rivers to gush out and flow through it,”
92. “Or you cause the sky to fall on us in pieces as you have claimed, or you bring Allah and angels here before us, face to face,”
93. “Or you have a house of gold and silver, or you ascend up in the sky. And even if you ascend up, we will not believe in your ascension until you bring us a Book to read.” Say, “Glory is to my Lord. Am I not but a man and Messenger?”
94. And nothing prevented people from belief except their saying, “Has Allah sent a man as a Messenger?”
95. Say, “If there had been angels walking on the earth in peace and security, We would have sent down for them from the heaven an angel as a Messenger.”
96. Say, “Allah is Sufficient as a Witness between me and you. He is the All-Knower, the All-Seer of His slaves [i.e., mankind].”
97. And he whom Allah guides is the one really guided, and he whom He sends astray will find no protector besides Him. And We shall gather them [i.e., disbelievers] together, on the Day of Resurrection, on their faces, blind, dumb, and deaf. Their abode will be Hell, the blaze of which We shall increase whenever it abates.
98. That is their recompense, for they rejected Our Signs and said, “If we become bones and earth, shall we really be resurrected as a new creation?”
99. Do they not see that Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, is Able to create the like of them? And He has decreed for them an appointed term, of which there is no doubt, but wrong-doers insist on disbelief.
100. Say [to disbelievers], “Had you possessed the treasures of my Lord’s Mercy, then you would certainly have held back for fear of poverty. And man is ever a miser.”
101. And We gave Moses nine Clear Signs. Ask the children of Israel; when he came to them, Pharaoh said, “I think that you, O Moses, are bewitched.”
102. He [i.e., Moses] said, “You know that these Signs are not sent down except by the Lord of the heavens and the earth as clear proofs [of Allah’s Oneness]. And I think that you, O Pharaoh, are really doomed to destruction.”
103. He [i.e., Pharaoh] wanted to drive them out of the land [i.e., Egypt], but We drowned him and all those with him.
104. And then, after him, We said to the children of Israel, “Dwell in the land. And when the last promise comes, We shall bring you altogether.”
105. And with truth We have sent it [i.e., The Quran] down, and it has contained truth. And We sent you, [O Muhammad], only as a bearer of glad news and a Warner.
106. And [We have sent down] The Quran, which We have divided into parts so that you, [O Muhammad], may recite it to people carefully, and We have revealed it by stages and at intervals [during 23 years].
107. Say, [O Muhammad, to disbelievers], “Whether you believe in it [i.e., The Quran] or disbelieve, those who have knowledge before it [i.e., good Jews and Christians], when it is recited to them, do prostrate themselves in full submission [to Allah].”
108. And they [i.e., Jews and Christians who accepted Islam] say, “Glory is to our Lord! The promise of our Lord is surely fulfilled.”
109. And they fall on their faces in prostration, weeping. And it [i.e., The Quran] increases their humility.
110. Say, [O Muhammad], “Whether you invoke Allah or the Most Merciful or whatever name [of His], He has the Best names.” And do not offer your prayer too aloud nor too low, but follow a way in between.
111. And say, “Praise is due to Allah, Who has not taken a son, nor does He have a partner in Dominion, and nor does He have a protector. And magnify Him very highly.”
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Praise is due to Allah, Who has sent down the Book [i.e., The Quran] to His servant, and He has not placed in it any crookedness.
2. [He has made it] straight [and clear] to warn [disbelievers] of a severe punishment from Him and to give the glad news to believers who do good that they will get a good reward [i.e., Paradise],
3. Where they will dwell forever,
4. And to warn those who say that Allah has begotten a son.
5. They have no knowledge of this [i.e., their false claim], nor do their fathers. What a big [i.e., false] word coming out from their mouths! They do not say but a lie.
6. Why should you, [O Muhammad], almost kill yourself in grief over them if they do not believe in this Quran?
7. We have truly made what is on the earth as an ornament for it so as to test them [i.e., mankind] as to which of them is best in deeds.
8. And, truly, We shall make it a bare plantless soil.
9. Or do you, [O Muhammad], think that the people of the Cave and Raqeem [i.e., the mountain where the Cave is] were a wonder among Our Signs?
10. [Remember] when the young men took shelter in the Cave [alienating themselves from disbelievers], and then they said, “O our Lord! Grant us mercy from You, and guide us to the Right Way.”
11. Then We made them sleep in the Cave for a number of years.
12. Then We raised them up [from their sleep] so as to know which of the two groups could calculate the sleep period better.
13. We [i.e., Allah] narrate to you,[O Muhammad], their story with truth. Truly, they were young men who believed in their Lord, and We increased them more and more of guidance.
14. And We strengthened their hearts [i.e., the people of the Cave] when they stood [challenging their king] and said, “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, besides Whom we will never invoke any other god. If we had done otherwise, we would then have been quite astray.”
15. “These, our people, have taken gods besides Him, without bringing any clear evidence. Who does more wrong than him who invents lies against Allah?”
16. [One of the young men of the people of the Cave said,] “Having withdrawn yourselves from them [i.e., your people] and from what they worship, except Allah, you have to seek refuge in the Cave, and your Lord will grant you from His Mercy and will make things easy for you.”
17. And you might see the sun, when it rose, decline to the right from their cave, and, when it set, turn away from them to the left, while they had a lot of space in the Cave. That is [one] of the Signs of Allah. He whom Allah guides is truly guided; and whomever He sends astray, you will find no guiding protector for him.
18. And you would have thought that they were awake although they were asleep. And We turned them on their right side and on their left side, with their dog stretching forward its two forelegs at the entrance [of the Cave as a guard]. Had you looked at them, you would have turned away escaping from them, and you would have been filled with terror.
19. Thus, We awakened them [from their sleep, which lasted for 309 years], and they began to ask one another. One of them said, “How long have you stayed [here]?” They answered, “One day or part of a day.” They said, “Your Lord knows best how long you have stayed. Send one of you with this silver coin to the town to see which food is the best and bring us some of it. And he should be careful so that none may know of you.”
20. “If they know where you are, they will stone you or [force you to] turn back to their religion, and in this case you will never succeed.”
21. And thus We made people know where they were so that they might know that Allah’s Promise [i.e., Resurrection] is true and that there is no doubt about the Hour. [Remember] when they [i.e., people of the town] disputed among themselves concerning them [i.e., the men of the Cave]. Some said, “Construct a building over them; their Lord knows best about them.” [Then] others, who won their point, said, “Let us build a place of worship over them.”
22. Some say that they were three, with their dog being the fourth; and some say that they were five, with their dog being the sixth, only out of guessing at the Unseen. But some say that they were seven, with their dog being the eighth. Say, [O Muhammad], “My Lord knows their number best. It is only a few who know them.” So do not debate about their [i.e., the men of the Cave] number except casually. And do not consult anyone of them [i.e., Jews and Christians] about them [i.e., the men of the Cave].
23. And do not ever say of anything, “I will do it tomorrow.”
24. [You must add,] “If Allah wills.” And remember your Lord when you forget, and say, “I ask my Lord to guide me to an answer closer to the truth.”
25. And they [i.e., the men of the Cave] stayed in their Cave three hundred [solar] years, and nine more [according to lunar reckoning].
26. Say, [O Muhammad], “Allah knows best how long they stayed. With Him is [the knowledge of] the Unseen of the heavens and the earth. No one can see or hear better than He. And they have no protector besides Him, and He does not consult anyone about His Decisions.”
27. And recite [to people] what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], of your Lord’s Book [i.e., The Quran]. No one can change His Words, and you will find no protector besides Him.
28. And be patient, [O Muhammad], with those who invoke their Lord in mornings and evenings, seeking to please Him. And do not overlook them [being poor], with you desiring the glitter of this life [by preferring the rich]. And do not obey him whose heart is heedless of remembering Us, and who follows his own lusts, and whose life is in vain.
29. And say, [O Muhammad, to people], “[What I convey to you is] the truth from your Lord.” Whoever wills [to believe], let him believe; and whoever wills [to disbelieve], let him disbelieve. We have prepared for wrong-doers [i.e., disbelievers] a Fire, the walls of which will be surrounding them. And if they ask for help, they will be given water like boiling oil, scalding their faces. What a terrible drink and what an evil dwelling place!
30. As for those who believe and do good deeds, We shall certainly not waste the reward of him who does good deeds.
31. Those will have eternal Gardens [i.e., Paradise], under which rivers flow, where they will be ornamented with bracelets of gold and will wear green garments of fine and thick silk, reclining there on raised thrones. How good the reward will be and how great the abode!
32. And set forward to them the example of two men. To one of them We gave two gardens of grapes, and We surrounded them both with date-palms, and We grew between them green crops.
33. Both gardens brought forward their fruit in full, and We made a river gush forth through them [i.e., the two gardens].
34. And he had a great deal of wealth, so [in arrogance] he said to his companion during their conversation, “I am better than you in both wealth and power.”
35. And he entered his garden wronging himself [i.e., in self-conceit] and said, “I do not think that this [garden] will ever get destroyed.”
36. “And I do not think that the Hour is coming. And if I am returned to my Lord, I will surely find what is better than this [garden].”
37. His companion, during their conversation, said to him, “Do you disbelieve in Him Who created you from earth, then out of a mixed drop, and then He made you into a man?”
38. “But as for me, He is Allah, my Lord, and I take none as a partner with my Lord.”
39. “It was better for you, when you entered your garden, to say, ‘Whatever Allah wills will happen, and there is no power except with Allah.’ If you see me less than you in wealth and children,”
40. “It may be that my Lord will give me [in the Hereafter] a reward better than your garden [in this life], and it may be that He will send on it a torment from the sky, and thus it will become a slippery plantless soil,”
41. “Or their water [i.e., of the two gardens] will become deep-sunken under the ground, so that you cannot seek it.”
42. So his fruits were ruined, and thus he was filled with sorrow for what he had spent on it [i.e., his garden], while it was utterly destroyed, and he said, “I wish that I had not taken any partner with my Lord.”
43. And he had no supporters to help him against Allah, nor could he support himself.
44. There [on the Day of Resurrection], authority will belong to Allah, the Truthful. He is the Best for reward and the Best for the final end.
45. And, [O Muhammad], set for them [i.e., people] an example of this worldly life. It is like the water which We send down from the sky, with which plants mingle [and thus become fresh and green]. But [later] all this becomes dry and destroyed, scattered by winds in all directions. And Allah is Able to do everything.
46. Wealth and children are the adornment of this life, but good deeds are better with your Lord as rewards and better as a source of hope.
47. And [remember] the Day [of Resurrection] when We cause mountains to pass away, and you will see the earth quite leveled, and We will gather all of them [i.e., all people], with none left behind.
48. And they [i.e., people] will be set before your Lord in rows, [and Allah will say,] “Now you have come to Us as We created you first, but you claimed that We would not assign for you a meeting appointment [with Us].”
49. And the [Record] Book will be placed [in every person’s hand]. And you will see sinners so afraid of what it contains, and they will say, “Woe to us! This Book has recorded all things: small and great.” They will find all their deeds shown before them, and your Lord never wrongs anyone.
50. And [remember] when We said to angels, “Prostrate yourselves to Adam.” And so they did, except Satan, who was one of the jinn, and he disobeyed his Lord’s Command. Will you then take him and his offspring protectors instead of Me even though they are enemies to you? What an evil exchange he is for wrong-doers!
51. I [i.e., Allah] did not make them [i.e., Satan and his offspring] witness the creation of the heavens and the earth nor the creation of themselves. Nor was I [i.e., Allah] to take misleaders [like Satan] as helpers.
52. And [remember] the Day [of Resurrection] when He [i.e., Allah] will say [to polytheists], “Call My [so-called] partners whom you claimed.” They will call them, but none will answer, and We shall put a barrier of enmity between them.
53. Criminals will see the Fire, and they will perceive that they will surely fall into it, and they will find no escape from it.
54. And We have explained all important matters to mankind in this Quran, but man is the most quarrelsome being among all.
55. What prevents people from belief and from asking their Lord to forgive them when [divine] guidance comes to them is [their challenge] to be destroyed as nations before or [to see] torment coming to them face to face.
56. And We do not send Messengers but as bearers of glad news and as Warners. And those who disbelieve keep on using false arguments trying to refute the truth. And they treat My Signs and My Warnings in mockery.
57. And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of his Lord’s Verses and yet he turns away from them and forgets the misdeeds which he has done? We have actually placed coverings on their hearts so that they will not understand it [i.e., The Quran], and [We] caused deafness in their ears. And if you, [O Muhammad], call them [i.e., disbelievers] to guidance, they will never be guided.
58. And your Lord is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful. If He were to call them [i.e., disbelievers] to account for what they have earned, He would hasten punishment for them. But they have an assigned time, from which they will have no escape.
59. And We destroyed those towns when they did wrong. And We have made an appointed time for their destruction.
60. And [remember] when Moses said to his boy-servant, “I will continue [traveling] until I arrive at the junction point of the two seas even though it may take me years [in order to meet that man who has more knowledge than I].”
61. When they both reached the junction of the two [seas], they forgot their fish, which took its way straight through the sea.
62. When they both went beyond the fixed point, he [i.e., Moses] said to his boy-servant, “Bring us our lunch; we have suffered a lot of tiredness in our journey.”
63. He [i.e., the boy-servant] said, “Do you remember when we rested at the rock? There I forgot the fish, and none made me forget it but Satan. It suddenly took its way through the sea in a strange way.”
64. He [i.e., Moses] said, “That [point] is what we are looking for.” So they both went back retracing their own footsteps.
65. Then they found one of Our servants [i.e., Khidr], whom We had granted of Our Mercy and whom We had taught of Our Knowledge.
66. Moses said to him, “May I follow you provided that you teach me of the guidance which you have been taught [by Allah]?”
67. He [i.e., Khidr] said, “You cannot be patient with me.”
68. “And how can you be patient with what you have no knowledge about?”
69. He [i.e., Moses] said, “If Allah wills, you will find me quite patient, and I will not disobey you.”
70. He [i.e., Khidr] said, “If you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I mention it to you.”
71. So they both [i.e., Moses and Khidr] went ahead until they got on a ship, which he [i.e., Khidr] immediately scuttled. Moses said, “Have you scuttled it to drown its passengers? You have done a terrible evil.”
72. Khidr said, “Did I not tell you that you cannot be patient with me?”
73. Moses said, “Do not blame me for what I have forgotten, and do not be hard on me.”
74. They both went on until they met a boy, and Khidr killed him. Moses said, “Have you killed an innocent person for no reason? You have indeed committed a great evil.”
75. Khidr said, “Did I not tell you that you cannot be patient with me?” 76. Moses said, “If I ask you about anything from now on, do not accompany me, and you have got the excuse [for not keeping me in your company].”
77. Then they both went on until they came to the people of a town. They both asked them for some food, but they refused to host them. Then they both found a wall about to fall down, and he [i.e., Khidr] set it straight. Moses said, “Had you wished, you could have taken a wage for it.”
78. Khidr said, “This is the end between you and me, and I will tell you the interpretation of what you could not have patience with me over.”
79. “As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working on the sea. I wanted to make a defect in it, for their king seizes every [good] ship by force.”
80. “As for the boy [, who was a disbeliever], his parents were [true] believers, and we feared lest he should hurt them through his tyranny and disbelief.”
81. “So we wished that their Lord would change him for another [son] more pious and more merciful.”
82. “As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the town, and there was a treasure under it belonging to them, and their father was a righteous man. Your Lord willed that they both should attain adulthood and then bring out their treasure, out of your Lord’s Mercy. And all that I did [in the cases of the ship, the boy, and the two orphans] was not of my own [i.e., it was by Allah’s Command]. That is the interpretation of what you could not have patience with me over.”
83. And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about Thu-Alqarnain. Say, “I shall tell you some about him.”
84. We [i.e., Allah] gave him authority in the land, and We provided him with the means to everything [i.e., knowledge or power].
85. So he followed a way,
86. Until he reached the farthest place in the west, where he found the sun setting in a hot sea, and he [also] found there a [disbelieving] people. We [i.e., Allah] said, “O Thu-Alqarnain! Either you punish them or you treat them kindly.”
87. He [i.e., Thu-Alqarnain] said, “As for a disbeliever, we shall punish him, and then he will be returned to his Lord, Who will punish him severely [in the Hereafter].”
88. “But as for one who believes and does good deeds, he will have the best reward, and we shall speak to him gently.”
89. Then he followed another way,
90. Until he reached the farthest point in the east, where he found a people whom We had not given a shelter against the sun.
91. So it was. And We knew everything about him [i.e., Thu-Alqrnain].
92. Then he followed another way,
93. Until he reached an area between two mountains, near which he found a people who could hardly understand a word.
94. They said, “O Thu-Alqarnain! Gog and Magog are indeed mischief-doers in the land. Shall we pay you a tribute so that you may build a barrier between us and them?”
95. He said, “What my Lord has granted me [of wealth, knowledge, and power] is much better [than what you offer]. Only help me sincerely, and I will make a barrier between you and them.”
96. “Bring me pieces of iron.” When he filled up the gap between the two mountains, he said, “Set the fire.” When he made it glow fire-red, he said, “Bring me molten copper to pour on it.”
97. Thus, they [i.e., Gog and Magog] could not climb it [i.e., the barrier], nor could they make a hole in it.
98. He [i.e., Thu-Alqarnain] said, “This [barrier] is a mercy from my Lord [to this people]. But when my Lord’s promise comes, He will level it to the ground. And Allah’s promise is always true.”
99. On that Day, We shall leave mankind and jinn surge like waves on one another. And the Trumpet will be blown, and We shall collect them all together [on the Day of Resurrection].
100. And on that Day, We shall show Hell to disbelievers quite well [to give them an idea about the torture in there],
101. Whose eyes had been so covered that they could not see My Guidance, nor could their ears hear it.
102. Do those who disbelieve think that they can take my servants [like angels and Messengers] as gods besides Me? We have prepared Hell to be a dwelling-place for disbelievers.
103. Say, [O Muhammad], “Shall I tell you who the greatest losers are?”
104. [They are those] who have gone astray in this life; yet, they think that they are doing well.
105. They are those who reject their Lord’s Signs and the Meeting with Him [in the Hereafter]. Thus, their deeds are in vain, and We shall give them no weight on the Day of Resurrection.
106. Their recompense is Hell, for they disbelieved and took My Signs and My Messengers in mockery.
107. Verily, those who believe and do good deeds will have Paradise as a dwelling-place.
108. They will live there eternally, desiring no change.
109. Say, [O Muhammad], “If the sea had been ink [for writing] my Lord’s Words, the sea would have been exhausted before the Words of my Lord would be finished, even if We brought another sea for more supply.”
110. Say, [O Muhammad], “I am only a human like you. It has been revealed to me that your God is One God. Whoever hopes for the Meeting of his Lord must do good deeds and must not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.”
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Kaf-Ha-Ya-Ain-ṣad. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. This is how Allah was Merciful to His servant Zachariah,
3. When he called his Lord [i.e., Allah] in secrecy.
4. He said, “O my Lord! Truly, my bones are so weak, and my head is filled with gray hair, and you have never let me down in any of my invocations to You.”
5. “And I am afraid of my relatives after me, and my wife is barren. So grant me through Your Mercy an heir,”
6. “Who will inherit me and of the posterity of Jacob in prophethood, and make him, my Lord, well-loved [by You and by people].”
7. [An angel said,] “O Zachariah! We give you the glad news of a son, whose name is John. We have given this name to no one before.”
8. He said [in surprise], “O my Lord! How can I have a son when my wife is barren and I am too old?”
9. He [i.e., the angel] said, “[It will be] so. Your Lord says, ‘It is easy for me. And I created you before when you had been nothing.’ ”
10. He [i.e., Zachariah] said, “My Lord! Give me a sign.” He said, “Your sign is not to speak to people for three nights without being dumb.”
11. Then he [i.e., Zachariah] came out to his people from the praying place and told them by signs to glorify [Allah] in the morning and in the evening.
12. [It was said,] “O John! Learn the Scripture [i.e., The Torah] perfectly.” And We [i.e., Allah] gave him [i.e., John] wisdom when he was still a child.
13. [And We granted him] mercy from Us and purity [from sins], and he was pious.
14. [And John was] dutiful to his parents, and he was neither arrogant nor disobedient [to his parents].
15. And peace be upon him [i.e., John] the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he will be resurrected.
16. And, [O Muhammad], mention in the Book [i.e., The Quran] [the story of] Mary when she withdrew from her family to a place overlooking the east.
17. She put a screen [to screen herself] from them. Then We [i.e., Allah] sent to her Angel Gabriel, and he appeared to her in the normal form of a man.
18. She [i.e., Mary] said, “I seek refuge with the Most Gracious from you if you really fear Allah.”
19. He [i.e., Gabriel] said, “I am only a messenger from your Lord [i.e., Allah] to inform you of a pious son.”
20. She said, “How can I have a son when I do not have a husband, and nor was I sinful?”
21. He said, “So it will be. Your Lord said, ‘This is easy for Me, and We will make him a Sign for people and a Mercy from Us. And it is a matter already decreed.’ ”
22. So she got pregnant with him [i.e., Jesus] and then withdrew herself to a far place [i.e., Bethlehem valley, to avoid people’s gossip about her].
23. Then the pains of childbirth took her to the stem of a date-palm, and she said, “I wish I had died before this and had been utterly forgotten.”
24. Then she was called from below her by him [i.e., Gabriel or her son, Jesus], “Do not grieve; your Lord has made a little water stream under you.”
25. “And shake the trunk of the date-palm, and fresh ripe dates will fall on you.”
26. “So eat, and drink, and be happy. If you see any human, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah], so I will not speak to anyone today.’ ”
27. Then she [i.e., Mary] brougt him [i.e., her baby] to her people, who said, “O Mary! You have done something horrible.”
28. “O sister of Aaron! Your father was not a man of evil, and nor was your mother unchaste.”
29. Then she pointed to him [i.e., her baby]. They said, “How can we speak to an infant in the cradle?”
30. He [i.e., the baby, Jesus] said, “Verily, I am the slave of Allah. He has given me the Scripture [i.e., The Gospel] and has made me a Messenger.”
31. “And He [i.e., Allah] has made me blessed wherever I am. And He has ordered me to pray and give zakat [i.e., appointed charity] as long as I live.”
32. “And [He has made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me arrogant or rebellious.”
33. “And peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I shall be raised up alive.”
34. That is Jesus, the son of Mary. This is the truth about him, which they doubt.
35. It does not suit Allah to have a son. Glory is to Him [i.e., Allah]. If He decrees a matter, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is.
36. [Jesus said], “Verily, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is the Straight Path.”
37. But the [Christian] sects differed among themselves [concerning Jesus]. So woe to those who disbelieve [i.e., those who say that Jesus is the son of Allah] from seeing the Great Day [i.e., the Day of Resurrection]!
38. How clearly they [i.e., disbelievers] will see and hear when they come to Us [on the day of Judgment]! But today [in this worldly life] wrong-doers are quite astray.
39. And, [O Muhammad], warn them [i.e., people] of the Day of Regret [i.e., the Day of Judgment, when people are admitted to Paradise or Hell according to their faith and deeds], when the matter has been decided [i.e., to Paradise or to Hell], whereas [in this worldly life] they are careless and do not believe.
40. Truly, it is We Who inherit the earth and whomever on it, and to Us they will be returned.
41. And mention in the Book [i.e., The Quran] Abraham. Truly, he was a truthful man, a Prophet.
42. [Remember] when he said to his father, “O my father! Why do you worship what cannot hear, cannot see, and cannot avail you in anything [i.e., idols]?”
43. “O my father! Verily, there has come to me of knowledge [through revelation] that which has not come to you. So follow me, and I will guide you to the Straight Path.”
44. “O my father! Do not worship Satan, for Satan is certainly rebellious to the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah].”
45. “O my father! I do fear lest a torture from the Most Gracious should touch you, and thus you become a companion of Satan.”
46. His father said, “Do you reject my gods, Abraham? If you do not change your mind, I will surely stone you. So get away from me for a long time.”
47. Abraham said, “Peace be upon you. I will ask my Lord to forgive you. Truly, He has ever been Kind to me.”
48. “And I will turn away from you all and what you invoke besides Allah. And I will invoke my Lord, hoping that my Lord may answer my invocation.”
49. When he [i.e., Abraham] had turned away from them and from what they worshipped besides Allah, We gave him Isaac and Jacob [, a company better than his people], each of whom We made a Prophet.
50. And We granted them of Our Mercy, and We made them highly honored and respected.
51. And, [O Muhammad], mention in the Book [i.e., The Quran] Moses. Truly, he was chosen, and he was a Messenger and Prophet.
52. And We called him [i.e., Moses] from the right side of the Mount, and We made him come so close to Us to talk with him.
53. And We granted him, out of Our Mercy, his brother Aaron as a Prophet.
54. And mention in the Book [i.e., The Quran] Ishmael. Truly, he was of an honest promise, and he was a Messenger and Prophet.
55. And he used to order his family to pray and give zakat, and his Lord was so pleased with him.
56. And mention in the Book [i.e., The Quran] Enoch [i.e., Idris]. Verily, he was a man of truth and a Prophet.
57. And We raised him to a high rank.
58. Those are they whom Allah granted His Grace from among Prophets of Adam’s offspring [referring to Idris], and of those whom We rescued with Noah [referring to Abraham], and of the offspring of Abraham [referring to Isaac, Jacob, Ishmael], and of the offspring of Israel [referring to Moses, Aaron, Zachariah, John, Jesus], and of those whom We guided and chose. If the Verses of the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah] were recited to them, they fell down in prostration and with tears.
59. But later, some generations came after them [i.e., those prophets and their good followers], not caring for prayer and indulging in lusts. They will be at a great loss [in the Hereafter],
60. Except those who repent and do good deeds. Such will enter Paradise, and they will not be wronged in the least.
61. [They will enter] Eternal Gardens, which the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah] promised to His servants in the Unseen. Truly, His Promise is to be fulfilled.
62. In there, they will hear no vain talk, but peace only. And their provision will be ready in it [i.e., Paradise] in mornings and evenings.
63. Such a Paradise is the one which We give only to the pious of Our servants.
64. And we [i.e., angels] do not come down [from the heaven] except by the Command of your Lord, [O Muhammad]. To Him belong what is before us and what is after us and what is in between the two. And your Lord never forgets.
65. He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is in between them. So worship Him, and continue doing so with patience. Do you know any who is equal to Him?
66. And man [i.e., a disbeliever] says, “If I die, am I going to be raised up alive?”
67. Does man not remember that We created him when he was nothing?
68. So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and devils, and then We will bring them round Hell on their knees.
69. Then We will draw out from every sect those that are most rebellious to the Most Gracious.
70. Then, surely, We know best those who deserve Hell most.
71. And everyone of you is certainly going to pass through it [i.e., Hell]. That is an inevitable decree of your Lord.
72. Then We will save [from Hell] those who are pious and leave wrong-doers in it on their knees [i.e., in humiliation].
73. And when Our Clear Verses are recited to them, those who disbelieve say to those who believe, “Which of the two groups is higher in position and stronger in forces?”
74. And how many a generation We destroyed before them, who were better in wealth and appearance.
75. Say, [O Muhammad], “Whoever is astray, the Most Gracious will extend time for him until they see what they were promised: either torture or the Hour. Then they will come to know who is worse in position and weaker in forces.”
76. And Allah increases those who are guided, in guidance. And good deeds are better with your Lord for reward and better in the end [as well].
77. Have you seen him who denied Our Signs and said, “I shall certainly be given wealth and children [in the Hereafter].”?
78. Has he known the Unseen or has he taken a promise from the Most Gracious?
79. No. We [i.e., Allah] shall record what he says, and We shall increase his punishment [in the Hereafter].
80. And We shall inherit from him what he says [about wealth and children, at his death], and he will come to Us alone.
81. And they [i.e., polytheists] have taken gods besides Allah so that they may derive honor and support from them.
82. No. They [i.e., the so-called gods] will reject their worship [on the Day of Judgment] and be their opponents.
83. Have you not seen that We have sent devils against disbelievers to tempt them to do evil?
84. So do not hasten, [O Muhammad], against them. We are only delaying them [to the Day of Judgment],
85. The Day when We gather the pious well-honored to the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah],
86. And We drive criminals to Hell in thirst.
87. They [i.e., criminals] will have none to intercede for them, except him who has made a covenant with the Most Gracious [i.e., that there is no god but Allah and its requirements of good deeds].
88. And they say, “The Most Gracious has a son.”
89. You have said something horrible,
90. Because of which the heavens are almost torn apart, the earth is almost split, and mountains almost fall down in destruction.
91. That is because they ascribe a son to the Most Gracious.
92. The Most Gracious [i.e., Allah] does not need a son.
93. Everyone in the heavens and the earth comes to the Most Gracious as a slave.
94. He [i.e., Allah] knows them all and has counted them all.
95. And each one of them will come to Him alone on the Day of Resurrection.
96. Verily, those who believe and do good deeds will be granted love by the Most Gracious.
97. Verily, We have made it [i.e., The Quran] easy in your tongue [i.e., Arabic] so that you will bring with it the glad news to the pious and warn with it disobedient people.
98. And how many a generation We destroyed before them. Do you see any of them [now] or hear even their whisper?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Ta-Ha. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. We have not sent down The Quran onto you, [O Muhammad], to cause you distress.
3. It is not sent but a Reminder to him who fears [Allah].
4. [It is] a revelation from Him Who has created the earth and the high heavens.
5. The Most Gracious rose over the Throne.
6. To Him belong all that is in the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, and all that is under the ground.
7. If you speak aloud, He does know what hearts conceal now and what they will conceal later.
8. There is no god but Allah. To Him belong the Best Names.
9. And has the story about Moses come to you?
10. When he saw a fire, he said to his family, “Stay here. I have seen a fire; let me bring a burning brand from it or be guided to the way.”
11. When he came to it [i.e., the fire], he was called, “O Moses!”
12. “Verily, I am your Lord. Take off your shoes, for you are in the sacred valley, Tuwa.”
13. “And I have chosen you [as a Messenger], so listen to what is revealed [to you].”
14. “Verily, I am Allah. There is no god but Me. So worship Me, and perform prayer when you remember Me.”
15. “The Hour is surely coming, but its time is known to none, so that every person will be recompensed for what he earns.”
16. “Thus, do not allow him who does not believe in it [i.e., the Hour] and follows his own lusts to divert you from it, lest you should get astray.”
17. “And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?”
18. He [i.e., Moses] said, “It is my stick, on which I lean and with which I shake tree branches for my sheep. And I [also] use it for other purposes.”
19. Allah said, “Cast it down, O Moses.”
20. He cast it down, and, to his surprise, it became a snake moving so fast.
21. Allah said, “Take it, and do not be afraid. We will return it to its first state.”
22. “And press your hand to your side and it will come out white with no disease. That is another Sign [i.e., miracle].”
23. “[This is] to show you some of Our Great Signs.”
24. “Go to Pharaoh [of Egypt]. He has gone far beyond the limits.”
25. Moses said, “O My Lord! I need Your support,”
26. “And make the mission easy for me,”
27. “And make me more fluent in speech,”
28. “So that they may understand my words,”
29. “And grant me a helper from my family,”
30. “Aaron, my brother.”
31. “Strengthen me with him,”
32. “And let him share my task with me,”
33. “So that we glorify You much,”
34. “And remember You much.”
35. “Verily, You are the All-Seer of us.”
36. Allah said, “You are granted what you have asked for, O Moses.”
37. “And We granted you a favor another time,”
38. “When We inspired your mother with what was inspired,”
39. “Saying [to her], ‘Put him [i.e., the infant] in a chest, then put it in the river [i.e., the Nile]; then, the river will cast it on the bank, where an enemy of Mine and of his [i.e., Pharaoh] will take him.’ And I have made people love you and made you be brought up under My Care.”
40. “When your sister went and said [to Pharaoh’s family], ‘Shall I show you one who can nurse him?’ So We returned you to your mother so that she might be pleased and not grieve. Then you killed a man [unintentionally], and We saved you from distress. And We tested you, and thus you stayed some years with the people of Midian. Then you came here at the appointed time, O Moses.”
41. “And I [i.e., Allah] have chosen you to be My Messenger.”
42. “Go, you and your brother, with My Signs, and always remember Me.”
43. “Go to Pharaoh. Verliy, he has gone beyond the limits.”
44. “And speak to him gently so that he may remember or fear [Allah].”
45. They both said, “O our Lord! We fear that he may punish us or go beyond the limits against us.”
46. Allah said, “Do not be afraid. Verily, I am with you both; I hear and I see.”
47. “Go to him and say, ‘We both are, indeed, two Messengers of your Lord. Send the people of Israel with us, and do not torture them. We have brought you a Sign from your Lord, and peace will be upon those who follow the Guidance [i.e., the word of Allah].’
48. ‘It has truly been revealed to us both that the punishment [of Allah] will be for those who belie [Messengers] and turn away.’ ”
49. Pharaoh said, “Who is your Lord, O Moses?”
50. Moses said, “Our Lord is He Who gave everything its own shape and identity, and then He guided [it to the right behavior].”
51. Pharaoh said, “What about former generations?”
52. Moses said, “The knowledge of them is with my Lord in the Record. My Lord does not err, nor does he forget.”
53. It is He Who has prepared the earth for human life, opened roads for you, and sent down water from the sky, with which We let grow various kinds of plants.
54. Eat and let your cattle graze. In all that, there are certainly Signs for people of understanding.
55. From it [i.e., the earth] We created you, and to it We return you, and from it We will bring you out again.
56. And We showed him [i.e., Pharaoh] all Our Signs, but he belied and rejected [them].
57. Pharaoh said, “Have you come to drive us out of our land with your magic, O Moses?”
58. “We will bring you magic like it, so make an appointment, which neither we nor you will break, at a plain place.”
59. Moses said, “Your appointment is the Day of Festival, and let people gather in the morning.”
60. So Pharaoh began his work, collected his magicians, and came [to the appointed place at the appointed time].
61. Moses said to the magicians, “Woe to you! Do not invent lies against Allah lest He should destroy you. And he who invents lies [against Allah] will certainly fail.”
62. They [i.e., the magicians] debated the matter with one another, and they did it in secrecy.
63. They said, “These two [i.e., Moses and Aaron] are two magicians, who desire to drive you out from your land with their magic, and [they desire to] defeat your magic.”
64. “So let us line up and show our magic together at the same time. He who wins today will indeed dominate.”
65. They said, “O Moses! Either you will throw first or we will.”
66. He said, “You throw first.” And suddenly, their ropes and sticks looked to him like real snakes moving fast, by their magic.
67. So Moses became worried and afraid.
68. We [i.e., Allah] said [to Moses], “Do not fear. You will defeat them.”
69. “Throw what is in your right hand, and it will swallow up what they have made. What they have done is only a magician’s trick, and the magician will never succeed no matter how skilled he may be.”
70. So the magicians fell down in prostration and said, “We believe in the Lord of Moses and Aaron.”
71. Pharaoh said [to the magicians], “Have you believed before I give you permission? It is your chief [i.e., Moses] who taught you magic. I will cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of date-palms, and you will know which of us [i.e., I or the Lord of Moses] can give severer and more lasting punishment.”
72. They said [to Pharaoh], “We shall never prefer you to the Clear Signs which we have seen, nor to Him Who created us. So give us whatever punishment you choose to give; you can judge only in this worldly life.”
73. “Truly, we have believed in our Lord so that He may forgive us our sins and the magic which you forced us to exercise. And Allah is better and more permanent [than you].”
74. Verily, whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal, for him is Hell, where he will neither die nor live.
75. And whoever comes to Him as a believer, having done good deeds, for such are the highest ranks,
76. Everlasting Gardens, under which rivers flow, dwelling there forever. That is the reward of those who have purified themselves.
77. And We revealed to Moses, “Travel by night with My servants [i.e., the people of Israel], and strike for them a dry path in the sea. Do not fear to be overtaken [by Pharaoh] or to be drowned [in the sea].”
78. Then Pharaoh pursued them [i.e., Moses’ people] with his troops, but the sea covered them up utterly.
79. Thus, Pharaoh sent his people astray, and did not guide them.
80. O people of Israel! We saved you from your enemy [i.e., Pharaoh], and We made an appointment with you on the right side of the Mount, and We sent down to you Al-mann [i.e., a kind of sweets] and quails [i.e., a kind of birds],
81. [Saying], “Eat of the good lawful things with which We have provided you, but do not transgress lest My Anger should descend on you. And whomever My Anger descends on, he is indeed a loser.”
82. Verily, I forgive whoever repents, believes, does good deeds, and remains guided [on the Right Path].
83. [Allah said,] “What made you hasten ahead of your people, O Moses?”
84. Moses said, “They [i.e., Moses’ people] are close behind me, and I hastened to you, my Lord, so that You might be pleased [with me].”
85. Allah said, “Verily, We have tested your people in your absence, and As-Samiri [i.e., the Samirite] has sent them astray [by tempting them to worship the calf].”
86. So Moses went back to his people in anger and sorrow. He said, “O my people! Did your Lord not give you a good promise? Did you wait long for the promise to come true? Or do you only desire that the anger of Allah should descend on you by breaking your promise to me [by worshipping the calf]?
87. They said, “We did not break your promise willingly, but we were made to carry [gold] ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh, upon departure], so we cast them [into the fire], and so did As-Samiri [i.e., the Samirite], [when he threw a handful of dust].”
88. So he [i.e., the Samirite] made them [from molten gold] the statue of a calf, which seemed to low. They said, “This is your god and the god of Moses, but Moses forgot [to tell you that this is your god].”
89. Do they [i.e., Moses’ people] not see that it [i.e., the calf] cannot say a word and it cannot bring them any harm, nor can it do them any good?
90. And Aaron had [already] said to them, “O my people! You are only tested with it. And, truly, your Lord is the Most Gracious. So follow me, and obey my order.”
91. They said, “We will not stop worshipping it [i.e., the calf] until Moses returns to us.”
92. Moses said, “O Aaron! What prevented you, when you saw them astray,”
93. “From following me [and informing me]? Have you disobeyed me?”
94. Aaron said, “O son of my mother! Do not seize me by my beard nor by my head! I feared lest you should say, ‘You have made a division among the people of Israel, and you have not observed my word.’ ”
95. Moses said, “What is the matter with you, O Samirite?”
96. The Samirite said, “I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful [of dust] from the [hoof] print of [the horse of] the Messenger [i.e., Gabriel], and I threw it into the fire. That is what my inner-self made fair-seeming to me.”
97. Moses said [to the Samirite], “Go away! And your punishment in this life is to say, ‘Do not touch me.’ And [in the Hereafter] you will have another punishment which you cannot escape. As for your god which you have been worshipping, we will burn it and scatter its ashes in the sea.”
98. Your god is, verily, Allah. There is no god but Him. He has full knowledge of everything.
99. Thus We give you, [O Muhammad], some information about what happened before. And We have given you from Us this Reminder [i.e., The Quran].
100. Whoever rejects it [i.e., The Quran], truly he will bear a burden [i.e., a sin] on the Day of Resurrection,
101. Dwelling in Hell forever, and the burden will be an evil one on the Day of Resurrection,
102. The Day when the Trumpet will be blown and when We shall gather criminals blue-eyed [of horror].
103. They [i.e., disbelievers] will speak to one another in a very low voice [saying], “You stayed [in the wordly life] not longer than ten [days].”
104. We know best what they say, when the wisest one of them says, “You stayed only one day.”
105. And they ask you about mountains [on the Day of Resurrection], say, “My Lord will blow them up into pieces.”
106. “So He will leave it [i.e., the earth] as a leveled smooth plain,”
107. “Where you will see no valleys or hills.”
108. On that Day, people will follow the caller and go wherever he will tell them to go. And all voices will become humbled to the Most Gracious, and you will not hear but whisper.
109. On that Day, intercession will not be accepted except from him whom the Most Gracious has given permission to and whose word is acceptable to Him.
110. He [i.e., Allah] knows what happens to His creatures in this life and what will happen to them in the Hereafter, and they cannot encompass His Knowledge.
111. And faces will submit to the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining [i.e., Allah]. And he who caused injustice [to anyone] will be a loser [on the Day of Judgment].
112. And whoever does good while he is a believer should not fear neither injustice [i.e., unfair increase of sins] nor decrease [of good deeds].
113. And thus We have sent it down as a Quran in Arabic, and We have explained in it warnings so that they may fear [sins] or it may remind them [of good deeds].
114. Allah is Exalted, the King, the Truth. Do not hasten, [O Muhammad], with The Quran before its revelation is completed to you [by Gabriel]. And say, “My Lord! Increase me in knowledge [from You].”
115. And We made a covenant with Adam before, but he forgot [the covenant], so We found no will-power in him.
116. And [remember] when We said to angels, “Prostrate yourselves to Adam.” They did so, except Satan, who refused.
117. So We said, “O Adam! This [Satan] is an enemy to you and your wife. Do not let him drive you both from Paradise lest you should be distressed.”
118. “I promise that you will not be hungry in it, and nor will you be naked.”
119. “I also promise that you will not be thirsty in it [i.e., Paradise], nor will you suffer from the heat of the sun.”
120. Then Satan whispered to him [i.e., Adam] saying, “O Adam! Shall I guide you to the Tree of Eternity and a kingdom that will never waste away?”
121. So they both ate of it, and thus their private parts appeared to them, and they began to cover themselves with the leaves of Paradise. Thus, Adam disobeyed his Lord and went astray.
122. Then his Lord chose him [i.e., Adam], forgave him, and guided him.
123. Allah said, “You both [i.e., Adam and Eve] and Satan get down from it [i.e., Paradise]. Some of you are an enemy to some [i.e., humans and devils]. If Guidance comes to you from me, whoever follows My Guidance, he will not get astray, nor will he get distressed.”
124. “But whoever turns away from My Reminder [i.e., The Quran], his life will be a life of distress, and We will raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection.”
125. He will say, “O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, whereas I used to have sight before?”
126. Allah will say, “Our Signs came to you [in the first life], but you neglected them. Similarly, today you are neglected.”
127. And thus We punish him who transgresses [beyond the limits set by Allah] and does not believe in the Signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is severer and more lasting [than that of the worldly life].
128. Is it not clear guidance for them [i.e., disbelievers] [to know] how many generations We have destroyed before them, in whose [deserted] homes they walk? Truly, in that there are Signs for those of understanding.
129. And had it not been for a Word and an appointed time already decreed from your Lord, their punishment would have come [fast] in this world.
130. So be patient, [O Muhammad], with what they [i.e., disbelievers] say, and glorify your Lord before sunrise and before sunset and during the night and at the ends of the day [i.e., the five prayers] so that you may be pleased [with Allah’s reward].
131. And do not long for what some rich people enjoy; that is only a [tentative] ornament of this life, and We test them by it. Your Lord’s provision is better and more lasting.
132. And order your family to perform prayer, and, you yourself, be patient with it. We do not require from you to worry about your provision; it is We Who provide you. And the good end is for those who are pious.
133. They [i.e., disbelievers] say, “Why does he [i.e., Muhammad] not bring us a Sign from his Lord?” Has a Sign not come to them in the previous Scriptures [about the coming of Prophet Muhammad]?
134. Had We destroyed them by a torment before it [i.e., The Quran], they would have said, “O our Lord! If only You had sent us a Messenger, we would have followed Your Verses before we suffer humiliation and disgrace.”
135. Say, [O Muhammad], “Each one is waiting [for Allah’s Judgment], so you wait [too]. You will come to know who is on the Right Path and who is guided.”
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. The reckoning of people is drawing nearer and nearer; yet, they are heedless.
2. Whenever some new Verses come to them [i.e., disbelievers], they listen to them playfully,
3. With their hearts busy [with evil]. And wrong-doers, whispering in secrecy, say, “Is this [Muhammad] not but a human like you? Will you submit to [his] magic while you see it?”
4. He [i.e., Muhammad] said, “My Lord knows what is said in the heavens and the earth. And He is the All-Seer, the All-Knower.”
5. They [i.e., disbelievers] said, “[The Quranic revelation to Muhammad is] false dreams. No, he has fabricated it. No, he is a poet. Let him bring us a sign as previous Messengers did.”
6. No town before them which We destroyed believed [though We had sent Messengers to them]. Are they going to believe [as an exception]?
7. And We had not sent before you, [O Muhammad], [as Messengers] but men to whom We revealed. You can ask people of the Scriptures [i.e., Jews and Christians] if you do not know.
8. And We created them [i.e., the Messengers] with bodies that eat, and they were not eternal.
9. Then We [i.e., Allah] fulfilled the promise to them: We saved them [i.e., the Messengers] and those whom We willed [of their followers] and destroyed disbelievers.
10. We sent down to you a Book [i.e., The Quran], which has your religion. Do you not understand [this Grace]?
11. And many a town We destroyed, for they were wrong-doers, and We created another people after them.
12. When they [i.e., disbelievers] saw Our torment coming to them, they tried to escape [it].
13. Do not escape! Return to your luxury and your homes so that you may be questioned!
14. They said, “Woe to us! We were really wrong-doers.”
15. They went on repeating what they said until they were utterly destroyed.
16. And We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them for mere fun.
17. Had We intended to have a pastime [i.e., wife or son], We could have had it from Us. But We have never intended that.
18. We make the truth clear [through The Quran], and thus it refutes falsehood and destroys it. Woe to you [i.e., disbelievers] for your lies [against Allah, that He has a son]!
19. To Him belongs whoever in the heavens and the earth. And those who are near Him [i.e., angels] are not too arrogant to worship Him, nor are they tired [of worshipping Him].
20. They glorify Him night and day with continuity.
21. Or have they [i.e., polytheists] taken gods on the earth who raise up the dead?
22. If there had been in them both [i.e., the heavens and the earth] gods except Allah, they both would have been corrupted. Glory is to Allah, the Lord of the Throne, above what they ascribe [to Allah, such as having a son or a partner].
23. He [i.e., Allah] cannot be questioned about what He does, whereas they will be questioned.
24. Or have they taken [other] gods besides Him? Say, [O Muhammad], “Bring your evidence. Here are the reminder for those with me [i.e., The Quran] and the Reminder for those before me [i.e., previous revealed Books]; [all emphasize the One God]. Yet, most people do not know the truth, so they turn away.”
25. We did not send a Messenger before you but We revealed to him [saying], “There is no god but Me, so worship Me [alone].”
26. And they [i.e., polytheists] say, “The Most Gracious [i.e., Allah] has begotten a son.” Glory is to Him. They [i.e., angels] are only honored servants [of Allah].
27. They [i.e., angels] do not speak until He does, and they act as He commands.
28. He [i.e., Allah] knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they do not intercede except for him with whom He is pleased. And they are in awe for fear of Him.
29. And whoever of them says, “I am a god besides Him,” We should recompense him with Hell. Such is the recompense of wrong-doers.
30. Have those who disbelieve not known that the heavens and the earth were united [as one piece], then We have caused them to split apart, and that We have made from water everything that lives? Do they not believe [in Allah]?
31. And We have created mountains on the earth, lest it should shake with them [i.e., mankind]. And We have made gaps as ways among mountains so that they may be guided.
32. And We have made the sky as a well-guarded roof, and, yet, they turn away from Our Signs.
33. And it is He Who has created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, with each rotating in its own orbit.
34. And We did not grant immortality [in this life] to none before you, [O Muhammad]. If you die, are they then immortal?
35. Everyone is to taste death. And We test you [i.e., people] with evil and with good, and to Us you will be returned.
36. And if those who disbelieve see you, [O Muhammad], they mock at you [and say], “Is this the one who insults your gods?” when they themselves deny the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah].
37. Man is created of haste. I [i.e., Allah] will show you [i.e., people] My Signs [of punishment], so do not be in a hurry.
38. And they [i.e., disbelievers] say, “When will this promise [of punishment] be fulfilled, if you are truthful?”
39. If only those who disbelieve knew when they cannot remove fire away from their faces and their backs, and they will not be helped.
40. It [i.e., the Fire or the Day of Resurrection] will come to them suddenly, so it will horrify them, and thus they cannot get rid of it, nor will they be delayed.
41. [Many] Messengers before you, [O Muhammad], were mocked at [as in your case], but those mockers were surrounded by what they mocked at [i.e., punishment].
42. Say [to disbelievers], “Who can protect you, in the night and in the day, from [the punishment of] the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah]?” They are turning away from remembering their Lord.
43. Or do they [i.e., disbelievers and polytheists] have gods that can protect them from Us? Such gods cannot [even] help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us.
44. We have allowed these [disbelievers] and their fathers to enjoy their life for long [as a test]. Do they not see that We reduce the land [of disbelievers, and give it to believers]? Are they the winners?
45. Say, [O Muhammad], “I only warn you by the revelation [from Allah]. But the deaf [i.e., disbelievers] do not hear the call when they are warned.”
46. And if a slight touch of your Lord’s punishment afflicts them, they shall say, “Woe to us! Truly, we have been wrong-doers.”
47. And We shall set up the balances of justice [for judgment] on the Day of Resurrection, and no one will be wronged in the least. And even if it [i.e., the deed, good or bad] is the weight of a mustard seed, We shall bring it [to account]. And Sufficient We are to take account.
48. And We granted Moses and Aaron the Criterion [i.e., The Torah] as a light and Reminder to the pious,
49. Who fear their Lord without seeing Him, and of the Hour [i.e., the Day of Resurrection] they are afraid.
50. And this [i.e., The Quran] is a blessed Reminder which We have sent down. Are you going to deny it?
51. And We granted Abraham [his share of] guidance before, and We knew best about his character [i.e., rejecting paganism].
52. [Remember] when he said to his father and his people, “What are these statues which you worship?”
53. They said, “We have found our fathers worshipping them.”
54. He said, “You and your fathers are clearly wrong.”
55. They said, “Have you come to us with the truth or are you one of those who play about?”
56. He said, “Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them, and to that I am one of the witnesses.”
57. “And by Allah, I will plot against your idols when you turn away.”
58. Then he [i.e., Abraham] broke their idols into pieces, [all] except the biggest one so that they might attribute the action to it.
59. They said, “Who has done this to our gods? Truly, he is a wrong-doer?”
60. [Some of them] said, “We heard a lad called Abraham threatening them.”
61. They said, “Bring him [here] in public so that they may see [his punishment].”
62. They said, “Are you the one who has done this to our gods, O Abraham?”
63. He said, “No. It is the biggest idol that did it. Ask them [i.e., the idols] if they can speak.”
64. So they turned to themselves [in consultation] and said, “You have done wrong [by not guarding the idols].”
65. Then they nodded their heads and said, “You [i.e., Abraham] know that they cannot speak.”
66. He said, “Do you worship besides Allah what cannot benefit you nor can harm you?”
67. “Fie upon you and upon what you worship besides Allah! Do you not understand?”
68. They said, “Burn him [i.e., Abraham] and support your gods, if you are to do [what you should do].”
69. We [i.e., Allah] said, “O fire! Be cool and safe for Abraham.” 70. They wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers.
71. And We saved him and Lot to the land which We blessed for mankind.
72. And We bestowed upon him [i.e., Abraham] Isaac and Jacob, a grandson. And We made each of them righteous.
73. And We made them leaders who guide [people] according to Our Command. And We revealed to them to do good, perform prayer, and give zakat. And they worshipped Us.
74. And [remember] Lot, whom We gave wisdom and knowledge and whom We saved from the town that used to do evil deeds. Verily, they were a people so wicked and so rebellious.
75. And We admitted him [i.e., Lot] to Our Mercy. Truly, he was one of the righteous.
76. And [remember] Noah, when he cried [to Us] before, and We answered his invocation and saved him and his family from the great distress.
77. And We supported him against those who belied Our Signs. They were indeed a wicked people, so We drowned them all.
78. And [remember] David and Solomon, when they gave judgment in the case of the field, which was destroyed by the sheep of some people, and We witnessed their judgment.
79. We made Solomon understand the case, and We granted wisdom and knowledge to each of them [i.e., Solomon and David]. And We [i.e., Allah] subjected mountains and birds to glorify [Allah] along with David. And it is We Who did [all these things].
80. And We taught him [i.e., David] how to make shields for you so as to protect you during battles. After all that, are you grateful?
81. And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind, running fast by his command to the land which We blessed [i.e., Palestine]. And everything We do know.
82. And [We subjected] to him [i.e., Solomon] of devils those who dived for him [to get pearls] and to do other works, and it was We Who controlled them [not to hurt him].
83. And [remember] Job, when he invoked his Lord [saying], “The disease has seized me, and you are the Most Merciful of those who are merciful.”
84. So We answered his invocation, and We cured him of his disease, and We restored his family to him and the like of them as a sign of Mercy from Us and a reminder for those who worship Us.
85. And [remember] Ishmael, Enoch, and Isaiah, all of whom were among those who were patient.
86. And We admitted them to Our Mercy, for they were among the righteous, indeed.
87. And [remember] Jonah, when he went away in anger [throwing himself in the sea], and he thought that We would not save him. So he cried in the darkness [i.e., inside the whale] [saying,] “There is no god but You. Glory is to You. Verily, I have been of wrong-doers.”
88. So We answered his invocation, and We saved him from the distress [by making the whale throw him out of its belly on the beach]. And thus We save believers.
89. And [remember] Zachariah, when he called his Lord, “O my Lord! Do not leave me alone [i.e., childless], when You are the Best of inheritors.”
90. So We answered his call, and We granted him John and made his wife fit [to bear a child for him]. Truly, they used to hasten to do good and invoke Us in hope and in fear, and they used to humble themselves before Us.
91. And [remember] her who guarded her chastity [i.e., Mary the Virgin], and We breathed into her [sleeves, through Garbriel], and We made her and her son [i.e., Jesus] a Sign for all mankind.
92. Truly, your religion is one, and I am your Lord, so worship Me.
93. And they [i.e., people] have differed with regard to religion [with some believing and some disbelieving]. Each to Us will return [on the Day of Resurrection].
94. Whoever does good while he is a believer, his [good] efforts will never be denied, and We will record whatever he does.
95. It is decreed that [the people of] any town which We destroyed will not return [to this world, nor will they repent to Us].
96. When Gog and Magog are let loose [from behind the barrier] and they rush down from every hill,
97. And the true Promise [i.e., the Day of Resurrection] will be drawing nearer and nearer, you will see the eyes of disbelievers staring in horror. [They will say,] “Woe to us! We were heedless of this, and we have been wrong-doers.”
98. You and what you worship besides Allah will be the fuel of Hell. Surely, you will enter it.
99. If these idols and partners had been gods, they would not have entered it [i.e., Hell]; and all of them [worshippers and what were worshipped] will abide in it forever.
100. In it [i.e., Hell] they will breathe out with deep sighs and roar, and in it they will not hear.
101. Verily, those whom We have already promised mercy will be kept far from it [i.e., Hell].
102. They will not hear any sounds from it, and they will abide forever where they desire [i.e., in Paradise].
103. The greatest terror [on the Day of Resurrection] will not grieve them, and angels will receive them [saying], “This is the Day which you were promised.”
104. [Remember] the day when We will fold up the heaven like a scroll. As We began the first creation, We will repeat it. It is a Promise to which We are committed. Verily, We will fulfill it.
105. And We have written in all Revealed Books after writing in the Record that the land [of Paradise] will be inherited by the righteous.
106. Verily, this [i.e., The Quran] is a Message to people who worship [Allah].
107. And We have not sent you [i.e., Muhammad] but a Mercy to all.
108. Say, [O Muhammad], “It is revealed to me that your god is One God. Will you then submit to Him?”
109. If they turn away, say, “I am innocent of you as you are innocent of me. And I do not know whether what you are promised [i.e., punishment] is near or far.”
110. [Say to them,] “He [i.e., Allah] knows what you say openly and knows what you conceal.”
111. “And I do not know if it is perhaps a test for you and an enjoyment for a short time.”
112. He [i.e., Muhammad] said, “My Lord! Judge in truth. And our Lord, the Most Gracious, is the One Whose Help is to be sought against the lies which they [i.e., disbelievers] invent.”
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. O people! Fear your Lord. The earthquake of the Hour is certainly something terrible.
2. On that Day [of resurrection], every nursing mother will forget her nursling, and every pregnant woman will drop down her embryo, and you will see people drunken although they are not so, but the torment of Allah is so severe.
3. And some people argue about Allah with no knowledge and follow every rebellious devil.
4. It is decreed for the devil that whoever follows him will be sent astray and will be led to the torment of the Blazing Fire.
5. O people! If you are in doubt of Resurrection, verily, We have created you from dust, then from a mixed drop [i.e., male and female discharge], then from a clot, then from a little lump of flesh, formed or unformed [as in the case of miscarriage], to show you [Our Power in creation]. And We establish in the wombs whomever We will to an appointed term, then We bring him out as an infant, and then he reaches the age of adulthood. Some of you die [young], and some are made to reach the most miserable old age, when one knows nothing after having known [a great deal]. [Similarly,] you see the earth barren, but when We send down water on it, it shakes [with life], swells, and makes grow all sorts of beautiful plants.
6. That is because Allah is the Truth, and He gives life to the dead, and He is Able to do everything.
7. Surely, the Hour is coming with no doubt, and Allah will raise up [all] those in the graves.
8. And among people, there is he who argues about Allah without having knowledge nor guidance nor a Book giving light [i.e., a Revealed Book],
9. With arrogance so as to send people astray. In this life, there is disgrace for him, and on the Day of Resurrection We will make him taste the torment of the Fire.
10. [It will be said to them] “That is because of what your hands have done. And, truly, Allah never wrongs anyone.”
11. And among people, there is he who worships Allah in doubt. If good befalls him, he is satisfied with it [i.e., Islam]. And if an evil befalls him, he returns to disbelief, thus losing this life and the Hereafter. That is the great loss, indeed.
12. He invokes besides Allah that [idol] which cannot harm or benefit him. That is straying far away.
13. He invokes [besides Allah] him whose harm is more obvious than his benefit. What a bad protector and what an evil friend!
14. Verily, Allah will admit those who believe and do good deeds to Gardens under which rivers flow [in Paradise]. Truly, Allah does whatever He wills.
15. Whoever thinks that Allah will not support him [i.e., Muhammad] in this life and in the Hereafter, let him fix a rope to the ceiling [of his home] and strangle himself with it and see if his plan can really remove his grudge.
16. Thus We sent it down [i.e., The Quran] as Clear Signs. And, truly, Allah guides whoever wills [to be guided].
17. Verily, those who believe, Jews, Sabians, Christians, Magus, and polytheists, [who take partners with Allah], will be judged by Allah on the Day of Resurrection. Truly, Allah is the Witness over everything.
18. Do you not see that whoever is in the heavens and the earth, the sun, the moon, stars, mountains, trees, animals, and many people prostrate themselves to Allah? But for many people [who refuse to submit to Allah], punishment is justified. And whoever Allah disgraces, no one can honor him. Verily, Allah does whatever He wills.
19. These are two opponents [i.e., believers and disbelievers] in dispute about their Lord [i.e., Allah]. As for disbelievers, garments of fire will be tailored for them, and boiling water will be poured down on their heads.
20. With it [i.e., boiling water], what is in their bellies and their skins will be melted.
21. And for them [i.e., disbelievers], there will be hooked rods of iron [for their punishment].
22. Whenever they desire to go out of it [i.e., Hell], they will be returned to it. [And it will be said to them,] “Taste the torment of the Fire.”
23. Truly, Allah will admit those who believe and do good deeds to Gardens under which rivers flow, ornamented there with gold bracelets and pearls, and their garments there will be of silk.
24. And they [i.e., believers] are guided [in this life] to good words, and they are guided to the Path designed by the Praise-Worthy [i.e., Allah].
25. Truly, those who disbelieve and hinder people from the Path of Allah and from the Holy Mosque [at Makkah], which We have made [open] to people, whether the dwellers at Makkah or those outside it, and whoever inclines to do evil at it [i.e., the Holy Mosque] intentionally and unjustly, We shall make them taste a painful punishment.
26. And [remember] when We guided Abraham to the site of the [Sacred] House, [saying to him,] “Do not take partners with Me, and purify My House [from idols] for those who turn around it, and those who pray, and those who bow and prostrate [in their prayer],”
27. “And call people to pilgrimage. They will come to you, on foot or riding, from all distant roads.”
28. [They come to pilgrimage] so as to witness benefits for themselves [i.e., worship and trade] and so as to mention the Name of Allah on the appointed days [i.e., 10- 13th of Thu-Al-Hijjah] over the cattle which He has provided for them [for sacrifice]. Eat of it, and feed the poor.
29. Then they [i.e., pilgrims] have to undo ihram, fulfill their vows, and turn around the Ancient House [i.e., the Ka’bah at Makkah].
30. That [i.e., doing pilgrimage duties] and avoiding what Allah has prohibited are better for one with his Lord. [All] cattle are allowed to you, except specific prohibitions [such as blood, dead animals, and bacon]. So avoid idols and false speech.
31. [Be] sincere to Allah [in your worship], and do not take partners with Him. And whoever takes partners with Allah will be like one falling down from the sky, snatched by birds or thrown by winds to a far place.
32. And whoever honors the Commands of Allah, that [honoring] truly indicates the piety of his heart.
33. In them [i.e., cattle for sacrifice] there are benefits [like milk, riding, and wool] for you for an appointed time, and then they are brought for sacrifice to the Ancient House [i.e., the Ka’bah].
34. And for every nation We have made a religious ceremony so that they should mention the Name of Allah over what He has provided them of cattle. So your God is One God; submit to Him. And bear the glad news to those who are obedient and humble,
35. Whose hearts, when Allah is mentioned, are filled with fear, and who are patient with whatever befalls them, and who perform prayer, and who spend [for Allah] of what We have provided them.
36. As for cows and camels, We have made them for you among sacrifices for Allah. In them you have a reward [in the Hereafter if you offer them for a sacrifice]. And mention Allah’s Name over them [i.e., cattle] waiting in lines [for sacrifice]. When they die [after slaughter], eat of them and feed the poor, [who do not ask for charity], and the beggar, [who asks]. Thus, We have subjected them [i.e., cattle] for you so that you may be grateful [to Him].
37. Neither their meat [i.e., of the cattle which you sacrifice] nor their blood will reach Allah. It is only your piety that reaches Him from you. Thus, He has subjected them [i.e., cattle] for you so that you may glorify Him for His Guidance to you. And, [O Muhammad], bear the glad news to good-doers [i.e., entering Paradise].
38. Truly, Allah defends those who believe. Verily, Allah does not like those who are treacherous and ungrateful.
39. It is allowed for those who are fought against [i.e., believers] to fight, for they have been wronged [by disbelievers]. And, truly, Allah is Able to give them [i.e., believers] victory,
40. Who have been driven out of their homes unjustly, simply because they say, “Our Lord is Allah.” Had it not been that Allah checks some people by means of some, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, where the Name of Allah is mentioned much, would have been destroyed. And Allah will surely support those who support Him [i.e., His religion]. Verily, Allah is All-Strong, All-Exalted.
41. [Allah will support] those [Muslim rulers] who, if We give them power in the land, perform prayer, pay zakat, enjoin what is good, and forbid what is evil. And with Allah is the end of all matters.
42. And if they [i.e., disbelievers] belie you, [O Muhammad], before them the people of Noah, ’Ad, and Thamud did the same [i.e., belied the Messengers].
43. So did the people of Abraham and the people of Lot.
44. And so did the dwellers of Midian. And Moses was also belied. But I [i.e., Allah] gave disbelievers a respite [for a while], and then I punished them suddenly. And how [terrible] My punishment was!
45. We [i.e., Allah] destroyed many towns that rejected Messengers, so they lie there utterly ruined with deserted wells and high castles.
46. Have they [i.e., disbelievers] not traveled around through the land to understand and hear [i.e., learn lessons]? Truly, it is not eyes that may get blind, but it is hearts in chests that may get blind.
47. And they [i.e., disbelievers] ask you, [O Muhammad], to let torment come to them sooner, and Allah will never break His Promise. And a day with your Lord is certainly like one thousand years of what you count.
48. And many a town I [i.e., Allah] gave a respite though it was indulged in its wrong-doing. Then I suddenly seized it [with punishment]. And to Me the return is.
49. Say, [O Muhammad], “O people! I am only a plain Warner to you.”
50. Those who believe and do good deeds will have forgiveness and generous provision [from Allah].
51. As for those who stand against Our Signs, they will be the dwellers of Hell.
52. We [i.e., Allah] have never sent a Messenger or a Prophet before you, [O Muhammad], but, when he recited the Revelation, Satan inserted [some falsehood] in it. But then Allah abrogates what Satan inserts. Then Allah establishes His Verses. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
53. [That is] so that He [i.e., Allah] will make what is thrown in by Satan a test for those who have a disease in their hearts [i.e., hypocrites] and for those with cruel hearts [i.e., polytheists]. And, truly, wrong-doers are straying too far.
54. [That is] so that those who have been given knowledge may know that it [i.e., The Quran] is the truth from your Lord so that they may believe in it and their hearts may submit to it. And, truly, Allah guides those who believe to the Straight Path.
55. And those who disbelieve will continue doubting it [i.e., The Quran] until the Hour comes to them suddenly or the torment of a Day with no night after comes to them [i.e., the Day of Resurrection].
56. On that Day, the sovereignty belongs to Allah, Who will judge among them. Those who believed and did good deeds will be in the Gardens of Delight [i.e., Paradise].
57. And those who disbelieved and belied Our Signs will have a humiliating torment [in Hell].
58. As for those who emigrated in the Way of Allah and then were killed [at the battle] or died [without a battle], Allah will grant them a good provision [i.e., Paradise]. And, truly, Allah is the Best of providers.
59. Truly, He [i.e., Allah] will make them enter a place where they will be well-pleased. And, verily, Allah is All-Knowing, Most Forbearing.
60. Whoever [of Muslims] retaliates with the like of what he has been made to suffer and then he has been wronged again, Allah will surely support him. Verily, Allah is Oft-Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving.
61. That is because Allah inserts the night into the day and inserts the day into the night [i.e., He varies their length in different seasons]. And Allah is truly the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.
62. That is because Allah is the Truth, and what they [i.e., polytheists] invoke besides Him is falsehood, and, verily, Allah is the Most High, the Most Great.
63. Do you not see that Allah sends down water from the sky? And thus the earth becomes green. Truly, Allah is Most Courteous, Well-Acquainted [with all things].
64. To Him belong all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And, truly, Allah is Rich, Praise-Worthy.
65. Do you [i.e., people] not see that Allah has subjected to you what is on the earth [i.e., things, plants, animals], and ships that sail through the sea by His Command, and that He holds up the heaven, lest it should fall down on the earth except with His Permission? Verily, Allah is Most Kind, Most Merciful to mankind.
66. It is He Who created you [first], then He causes you to die, and then He will give you life again. Verily, man is ungrateful.
67. For every nation [through a Messenger] We [i.e., Allah] have ordained [certain] religious ceremonies which they must follow. So do not let them dispute with you about the matter, and call to your Lord, [O Muhammad]. Verily, you are on the Straight Guidance.
68. And if they argue with you, say, “Allah knows best what you do.”
69. Allah will judge among you on the Day of Resurrection concerning what you used to differ in.
70. Do you not know that Allah knows all that is in the heavens and the earth? Verily, all that is in a Record. Truly, that is easy for Allah.
71. And they [i.e., polytheists] worship besides Allah others for which He [i.e., Allah] has sent down no authority [i.e., no proof] and of which they have no knowledge. And for wrong-doers there will be no helper [on the Day of Judgment].
72. And when Our Clear Verses are recited to them [i.e., disbelievers], you see denial on disbelievers’ faces. They are about to violently attack those who recite Our Verses to them. Say, [O Muhammad to them], “Shall I tell you of something worse than that? The Fire, which Allah has promised to those who disbelieved. And what an evil end it is!”
73. O mankind! Here is an example [of what polytheists worship], so listen to it. Truly, those that you [i.e., polytheists] worship besides Allah can never create a fly even though they work together to achieve it. And if a fly snatches away something from them [i.e., idols], they cannot restore it from it. The idol is very weak, and so is the fly.
74. They [i.e., polytheists] have not honored Allah as they should. Truly, Allah is All-Strong, All-Exalted.
75. Allah chooses messengers from angels, and so He does from men. Truly, Allah is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.
76. He [i.e., Allah] knows what is before them and what is behind them [i.e., Messengers]. And to Him all matters return.
77. O you who believe! Bow down, prostrate yourselves, worship your Lord, and do good so that you may be successful.
78. And strive hard in the Way of Allah as you should [with your wealth, word, and life]. He [i.e., Allah] has chosen you [to convey His Message]. And He has made your religion [i.e., Islam] as easy and practical [i.e., without hardships] as the religion of your father, Abraham. He [i.e., Allah] has already named you Muslims [in previous Scriptures] and in this [i.e., The Quran] so that the Messenger [Muhammad] will be a witness over you and you [i.e., Muslims] will be witnesses over [other] people. So perform prayer, pay zakat, and hold fast to [the religion of] Allah. He is your Protector. And what an Excellent Protector and what an Excellent Helper He is!
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Believers are successful, indeed.
2. They [i.e., believers] are submissive in their prayer,
3. And they turn away from vain talk,
4. And they pay zakat,
5. And they guard their chastity [i.e., no sex outside marriage],
6. Except from their wives or those whom they possess [of slave women]; they are certainly not to be blamed.
7. But whoever goes beyond that, then he is a transgressor.
8. They [i.e., believers] are true to whatever they are entrusted with and to their covenants.
9. And they perform their prayers regularly and on time.
10. Those are the inheritors,
11. Who will inherit Paradise and dwell in it forever.
12. And We created man [i.e., Adam] from an extract of clay.
13. And then We made him [i.e., Adam’s offspring] from a mixed drop [from a male and a female] in a safe place [i.e., the woman’s womb].
14. Then We made the mixed drop into a clot, then We made the clot into a little piece of flesh, then We made this piece into bones [having a human shape], then We covered the bones with flesh, and then We made him into another creation [having life]. So Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators.
15. After that, you will surely die.
16. Then, surely, you will be raised up on the Day of Resurrection.
17. And We have created above you the seven heavens, and We know everything about all creatures.
18. And We send down from the sky water in [right] measure. And We make it stored in the earth, and We are Able to take it away.
19. And We [i.e., Allah] grow with it [i.e., water] gardens of date-palms, grapes, and many other types of fruit, from which you eat.
20. And We [also] grow on the Sinai Mount the [olive] tree, which produces oil for eaters and ointment as well.
21. And in the cattle you [i.e., people] truly have a lesson. We [i.e., Allah] give you a drink [i.e., milk] of what their bellies contain, and you have many benefits from them [too], and of them you eat.
22. And on them [i.e., the cattle] and on ships you are carried.
23. And We sent Noah to his people, and he said, “O my people! Worship Allah. You have no god but Him. Do you not fear [His punishment]?”
24. The chief of disbelievers among his people said, “He [i.e., Noah] is only a human like you. He [only] wants to make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, He would have sent down angels. We have never heard of something like this from our forefathers.”
25. “He [i.e., Noah] is only a mad man; so wait for him for a while [until he dies].”
26. He said, “O my Lord!Support me, for they belie me.”
27. So We revealed to him [saying], “Make a ship under Our Eyes and under Our Guidance. When Our Command comes and water springs out from the oven [i.e., flooding all over], take on it [i.e., the ship] of each species two [i.e., a male and a female] and your family, except those who have been already decreed to be destroyed. And do not ask me to forgive wrong-doers, for they are to be surely drowned.”
28. “When you [i.e., Noah] and those with you are safe on the ship, say, ‘Praise is due to Allah, Who has saved us from the people who are wrong-doers.’ ”
29. And say, “O my Lord! Lead me to land at a blessed place, and you are the Best of those who bring to land.”
30. Verily, in that there are Signs [for people to believe in Allah]. And We always put [people] to tests.
31. Then We created another generation after them.
32. And We [i.e., Allah] sent to them a Messenger from among themselves [saying], “Worship Allah. You have no god but Him. Do you not fear [His punishment]?”
33. The chiefs of his people who disbelieved and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter and whom We had given the luxuries of the worldly life said, “He [i.e., the Messenger] is not but a man like you. He eats of what you eat, and he drinks of what you drink.”
34. “If you obey a human like you, then you are losers, indeed.”
35. “Does he promise you that, when you die and become dust and bones, you will be resurrected?”
36. “What he promises you is not true.”
37. “It is only this life, where we die and where we live. And we will not be resurrected.”
38. “He [i.e., the Messenger] is not but a man who has invented lies against Allah, and we are not going to believe in him.”
39. He said, “O my Lord! Help me, for they belie me.”
40. He [i.e., Allah] said, “Soon they will regret [what they have said].”
41. So the Awful Cry overtook them in justice, and We made them dead. Away with those who are wrong-doers.
42. Then We, after them, created other generations.
43. No nation can advance its [appointed] term, nor can they delay it.
44. Then We sent Our Messengers one after another. Whenever a Messenger came to his nation, they used to belie him. So We destroyed them [i.e., those nations] one after another, and We made them true stories [and lessons]. So away with people who do not believe.
45. Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our Signs and clear evidence,
46. To Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they were arrogant and disobedient.
47. They said, “Are we to believe in two men like us, when their people are humiliated servants to us?”
48. So they belied them both, and thus they were destroyed.
49. And We gave Moses the Scripture so that they might be guided.
50. And We made the son of Mary and his mother a Sign, and We made them both take refuge on a hill, fertile and with plenty of water.
51. O Messengers! Eat of what is good and do good deeds. Truly, I know best what you do.
52. Verily, your religion, [O Messengers], is one religion [i.e., a religion of monotheism], and I am your Lord, so fear Me.
53. Then they [i.e., people] divided themselves into sects, with each sect rejoicing in whatever beliefs it has.
54. Let them enjoy their error for a while [i.e., until the time of their destruction].
55. Do they [i.e., disbelievers] think that We provide them with wealth and children
56. Because We love them? No,[it is a test], but they do not perceive.
57. Truly, those who live in awe because of fear of their Lord,
58. And those who believe in the Signs of their Lord,
59. And those who take no partners with their Lord,
60. And those who give in charity fearing [that Allah may not accept it], for they will return to their Lord,
61. All those hasten to do good deeds and try to be the first in that.
62. And We do not burden any person beyond his capacity. And We have a Record [of deeds] that speaks the truth [about everyone], and no one will be wronged.
63. Their hearts [i.e., of polytheists] are heedless of this [i.e., The Quran], and they are to do misdeeds.
64. When We seize those living in luxury with punishment, they shout up seeking help.
65. Do not invoke now. Surely, you will not get Our help.
66. My Verses were recited to you, but you used to reject them,
67. In arrogance, talking evil about it [i.e., The Quran] by night and deserting it.
68. Have they [i.e., polytheists] not thought deep of the Word [i.e., The Quran] or has there come to them what has not come to their forefathers?
69. Or have they [i.e., Arab pagans] not recognized their Messenger, so they have denied him?
70. Or do they say that there is madness in him? No, he [i.e., Muhammad] has brought them the truth, but most of them hate the truth.
71. And if Allah had followed their desires, the heavens, the earth, and whoever in them would have been corrupted. We have brought them their Reminder [i.e., The Quran], but they turn away from their Reminder.
72. Or do you [i.e., Muhammad] ask them for a wage [for guiding them]? The reward of your Lord is [much] better, and He is the Best of providers.
73. Truly, you call them to the Straight Path.
74. And, verily, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are going far astray from the [Straight] Path [i.e., Islam].
75. And if We had had Mercy on them and made them understand The Quran, they would have blindly persisted in their disbelief.
76. And We seized them [i.e., disbelievers] with punishment, but they did not submit to their Lord, nor did they invoke Him in submission.
77. When We open for them the gate of severe punishment [on the Hour], they will be filled with regret and despair.
78. It is He Who has created for you [the sense of] hearing, [that of] sight, and minds [to understand]. But you thank [Him] a little.
79. And it is He Who has created you on the earth, and to Him you shall be gathered.
80. And it is He Who gives life and causes death, and it is He Who makes the alternation of night and day. Do you not understand?
81. But they said what their forefathers had said.
82. They said, “When we die and become dust and bones, are we going then to be raised up?”
83. “We and our forefathers have been already promised this. These are only old tales.”
84. Say, “Whose is the earth and whoever on it, if you know?”
85. They will say, “It is Allah’s.” Say, “Will you then remember?”
86. Say [to disbelievers], “Who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the Great Throne?”
87. They will say, “Allah.” Say, “Will you then fear [Him]?” 88. Say, “In whose hand is the dominion of everything? He protects, but He cannot be protected against, if you know.”
89. They will say, “[All belongs] to Allah.” Say, “How then are you deceived away from the truth?”
90. We [i.e., Allah] have brought them the truth, but they are liars.
91. Allah does not have a son. Nor is there another god with Him. Had it been otherwise, each god would have controlled what he had created and each god would have tried to dominate the others. Glory is to Allah above what they [i.e., polytheists] attribute to Him.
92. He is the Knower of the Unseen and the Seen. Exalted He is above whatever partners they associate with Him.
93. Say, [O Muhammad], “O my Lord! If only you show me what they [i.e., disbelievers] are promised [of Your punishment].”
94. “O my Lord! Let me not be among the people who are wrong- doers.”
95. Truly, We are Able to show you [i.e., Muhammad] [the punishment] which We promised them [i.e., disbelievers].
96. React to evil [which some say or do] with what is better. We [i.e., Allah] know best what they say.
97. And say, “My Lord! I seek refuge with You from devils’ suggestions,”
98. “And I seek refuge with You, my Lord, lest they [i.e., devils] should come near me.”
99. When death comes to one of them, he says, “My Lord! Send me back [to the worldly life],”
100. “So that I may do good to make up for what I have missed.” No! It is only a word which he says, and they are to wait [in their graves] until the Day when they will be resurrected.”
101. When the Trumpet [of Resurrection] is blown up, there will be then no kinship among them [i.e., people], nor will one ask of another.
102. Those whose good deeds overweigh their bad deeds are successful [i.e., go to Paradise].
103. But those whose bad deeds overweigh are those who lose themselves, abiding in Hell forever,
104. With the Fire burning their faces, and in it they will grin.
105. [Allah will say to disbelievers,] “Were not My Verses recited to you, and you used to reject them?”
106. They [i.e., disbelievers in the Fire] will say, “Our Lord! Our evil desires dominated us, and we were astray.”
107. “Our Lord! Bring us out of it [i.e., Hell]. If we return [to evil], then certainly we are wrong- doers.”
108. He [i.e., Allah] will say, “Remain where you are in humiliation, and do not speak to Me.”
109. Verily, there were some people who used to say, “Our Lord! We have believed, so forgive us and have mercy on us, for You are the Best of those who are merciful.”
110. But you [i.e., disbelievers] mocked at them [i.e., believers] so much that they made you forget My Remembrance, and you used to laugh at them.
111. I have certainly rewarded them today for their patience; they are the real winners.
112. He [i.e., Allah] will say, “How many years did you stay on the earth?”
113. They will say, “We stayed a day or part of a day. Ask those who count.”
114. He [i.e., Allah] will say, “You stayed only a little, if only you had known.”
115. “Did you think that We created you for no purpose and that you will not be returned to Us?”
116. Exalted is Allah, the True King. There is no god but Him. [He is] the Lord of the Supreme Throne.
117. And whoever worships with Allah another god, of whom he has no evidence, his Lord will punish him [for that]. Truly, disbelievers do not succeed.
118. And say, [O Muhammad], “My Lord! Forgive and have mercy, for You are the Best of those who are merciful.”
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. [This is] a chapter which We have sent down and which We have enjoined. And in it We have revealed Clear Signs so that you may remember.
2. The woman and the man guilty of illegal sexual intercourse must be flogged with one hundred stripes each [if they are not married]. And do not pity them, for it is a punishment prescribed by Allah, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a party of believers witness their punishment [in public].
3. The adulterer does not commit adultery except with an adulteress or a she-polytheist. And the adulteress does not do so except with an adulterer or a he-polytheist. And that [i.e., adultery] is prohibited to believers.
4. And as for those who accuse chaste women [of adultery] without four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes, and do not accept their testimony forever. And those are the rebellious,
5. Except those who repent after that and do good deeds; truly, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
6. As for those who accuse their own wives [of adultery] with no witnesses but themselves, his testimony is to testify four times [swearing] by Allah that he is certainly telling the truth.
7. And his fifth testimony must be to call the Curse of Allah on himself if he is telling a lie [against his wife].
8. But she will avoid punishment [i.e., stoning to death] if she testifies four times by Allah that he is telling a lie [against her].
9. And her fifth testimony must be that the anger of Allah be on her if he is telling the truth.
10. Had it not been for the Grace of Allah and His Mercy, [He would have hastened His punishment on you]. Truly, Allah does accept repentance and is All-Wise.
11. Truly, those who spread the slander [against Aisha, one of Prophet Muhammad’s wives] are a group among you. Do not consider it as something bad for you [i.e., Aisha’s family]. No, it is something good for you. Each one of them [i.e., who has taken part in spreading the slander] will pay for the sin that he has earned. As for him who fabricated the slander, he will have a great torment.
12. Why did believers, men and women, when you heard it [i.e., the slander about Aisha], not think good of their own people and say, “This is an obvious lie.”?
13. Why did they [i.e., the slanderers] not bring four witnesses? Since they did not do so, then unto Allah they are liars.
14. Had it not been for the Grace of Allah and His Mercy in this life and the Hereafter, a great torment would have touched you for what you had been involved in,
15. When you spread it [i.e., the slander] with your own tongues, saying with your mouths what you have no knowledge of, thinking that it is so little, whereas it is unto Allah so serious.
16. Why did you not, when you heard it [i.e., the slander], say, “It is not proper for us to speak of this. Glory is to You. This is a great lie.”?
17. Allah commands you not to do the like again forever, if you are believers.
18. And Allah makes the Verses clear for you, and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. 19. Truly, those who like to see major sins spread among believers will have a painful punishment in this life and the Hereafter. And Allah knows, and you do not know.
20. And had it not been for the Grace of Allah and His Mercy on you, [He would have hastened His punishment on you], for Allah is Most Kind, Most Merciful.
21. O you who believe! Do not follow the footsteps of the devil. And whoever follows the devil’s footsteps, he [i.e., the devil] commands [his followers to commit] adultery and evil. Had it not been for the Grace of Allah and His Mercy, none of you would never have been pure [from sins]. But Allah purifies whomever He wills, and Allah is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.
22. And those among you who are charitable and wealthy must not swear not to help their kinship, the needy, and immigrants for the sake of Allah. They are to forgive and pardon. Do you not like to be forgiven by Allah? And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
23. Truly, those who accuse chaste female believers are cursed in this life and in the Hereafter, and theirs will be a great punishment,
24. When their tongues, hands, and feet will testify against them concerning what they used to do.
25. On that Day [i.e., the Day of Judgment], Allah will pay them what they justly deserve, and they will know that Allah is the Manifest Truth.
26. Bad women are for bad men, and bad men are for bad women. Good women are for good men, and good men are for good women. Those [who are good] are innocent of what they [i.e., liars] say [against them]. For them are forgiveness [from Allah] and a generous provision [i.e., Paradise].
27. O you who believe! Do not enter houses that are not yours until you ask permission and greet those in the house. That is better for you so that you may remember.
28. If you do not find anyone in them [i.e., the houses], do not enter until you are permitted. And if you are told to go back, then go back, for it is purer for you. And Allah is the All-Knower of what you do.
29. There is no sin on you to enter an uninhabited house [without asking permission] for a need of yours [like shops and inns]. And Allah knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
30. Tell believing men to lower their gazes [i.e., not to look at women] and to protect their private parts [from adultery and from being seen]. That is purer for them. Truly, Allah is Well-Acquainted with what they do.
31. And tell believing women to lower their gazes [i.e., not to look at men], to protect their private parts [from adultery and from being seen], not to show their adornment except what appears of it [i.e., the hands, the face, and the eyes], to cover their necks and bosoms with their veils, not to show their adornment except to their husbands, fathers, husbands’ fathers, sons, husbands’ sons, brothers, brothers’ sons, sisters’ sons, [Muslim] women, [female] slaves, male servants with no desire for women, or the child who has no sense of sexuality. They [i.e., women] must not stamp their feet while walking so as to reveal what ornament they conceal. And, O all believers, repent to Allah so that you may succeed.
32. And marry those among you who are single [i.e., unmarried] and the pious of your male slaves and female slaves. If they are poor, Allah will make them rich of His Grace. And Allah is All-Sufficient, All-Knowing.
33. And those who cannot marry for financial reasons must keep chaste until Allah makes them rich of His Bounty. And if one of your slaves seeks a contract of emancipation, write such a contract if you find him honest and truthful. And grant them [i.e., the slaves] of the wealth which Allah has granted to you. And do not force your female slaves to prostitution if they desire chastity so that you may seek benefits of this life. And if anyone forces them, Allah then, after their compulsion, is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful [to those women, for they were forced to sin].
34. And We have sent down to you Clarifying Verses [i.e., The Holy Quran], and an example of those who passed away before you, and guidance to the pious.
35. Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His Light [i.e., Guidance] is like a niche with a lamp in it, the lamp is in a glass, the glass is like a bright star, lit from a blessed tree, an olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west [i.e., receiving sun-rays from both directions], whose oil almost glows [of itself] without being touched by fire. [It is] Light upon Light [i.e., The Quran and faith]. Allah guides to His Light whoever wills [to be guided], and Allah sets parables for people. And Allah is the All-Knower of everything.
36. In houses [i.e., mosques] which Allah has ordered to be established, where His Name is mentioned [in prayers], He is glorified in mornings and evenings,
37. By men whom trade or sale cannot tempt away from remembering Allah, nor from performing prayer nor paying zakat. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be filled with horror [i.e., the Day of Resurrection],
38. So that Allah may reward them for the best of their deeds and add more for them of His Grace. And Allah provides without a limit to whomever He wills.
39. As for those who disbelieve, their deeds are like a mirage in a desert, which a thirsty man would think to be water, until he reaches it and finds nothing, but he finds Allah with him, paying him what he deserves, and Allah is Swift in taking account.
40. Or [the state of disbelievers is] like the darkness of a deep sea, overtaken by waves topped by waves topped by clouds: layers of darkness one above the other. If he [i.e., the disbeliever] gets out his hand, he can hardly see it. And whoever is not given light [i.e., Guidance] by Allah, he can have no light.
41. Do you not see that Allah is glorified by whoever is in the heavens and the earth? And each of the flying birds knows how to pray to Him and how to glorify Him. And Allah is the All-Knower of what they do.
42. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and to Allah is the return.
43. Do you not see that Allah drives clouds gently, then He combines them together, then He piles them up, so you see rain coming down from between them? And He sends down from the sky hail, with which He strikes whomever He wills and which He turns away from whomever He wills. The flash of their lightning can almost blind the sight.
44. Allah makes the night and the day follow each other. Truly, in that there is a lesson for those who have insight.
45. And Allah has created all moving [living] creatures from water. Some of them creep on their bellies, some walk on two legs, and some on four. Allah creates whatever He wills. Verily, Allah is Able to do everything.
46. We [i.e., Allah] have sent down Clarifying Verses [in this Quran]. And Allah guides whoever wills [to be guided] to the Straight Path.
47. And they say, “We have believed in Allah and the Messenger [i.e., Muhammad], and we have obeyed.” But some of them turn away after that; such are not believers.
48. And if they are called to Allah and His Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] to judge between them, some of them turn away [in refusal].
49. But if the judgment is on their side, they come to him [i.e., the Messenger] in full submission.
50. Is there a disease in their hearts, or do they doubt [the religion], or do they fear that Allah and His Messenger would wrong them? Those are the wrong-doers.
51. As for believers, if they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them, they say, “We hear and obey.” Those are the successful.
52. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger and fears Allah and obeys Him, those are the winners.
53. And they [i.e., hypocrites] strongly swear by Allah that if you [i.e., Muhammad] order them [to fight], they shall obey. Say [to them], “Do not swear. Your obedience is known [to be only verbal]. Truly, Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.”
54. Say, “Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger.” If they turn away, his duty is what is placed on him [i.e., convey the Message], and your duty is what is placed on you [i.e., to obey]. If you obey him [i.e., the Messenger], you are guided. And the only duty of the Messenger is to convey [the Message] so clearly.
55. Allah has promised those of you who believe and do good deeds that He shall grant them victory as He granted it to those before them, and that He shall establish their religion, which He has chosen for them, and that He shall grant them security after their fear [i.e., peace after war]. They worship Me, associating none with Me. And whoever disbelieves after that, those are the rebellious.
56. And perform prayer, give zakat, and obey the Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] so that you may get mercy [form Allah].
57. Do not think that those who disbelieve can escape in the land [Allah’s punishment]. Their abode is the Fire; and what a bad end it is!
58. O you who believe! Your slaves [of males and females] must ask your permission before entering [your private room], and so must children under the age of puberty, on three occasions: before dawn prayer, at noon rest, and after night prayer. [These are] your three times of privacy, after which there is no sin on you or them [to move about], attending one another. Thus, Allah makes the Verses [of The Quran] clear to you. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
59. And when your children reach the age of puberty, they must take permission [to enter your private room] as those older do. Thus Allah shows you His Verses. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
60. As for old women who do not desire marriage, there is no sin on them to take off their [outer] garment, without revealing their ornament. But not to do that [i.e., not taking off their outer garment] is better for them. And Allah is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.
61. There is no restriction on the blind, the lame, and the sick, nor on yourselves to eat from [the food] of your homes, fathers’ homes, mothers’ homes, brothers’ homes, sisters’ homes, uncles’ homes, aunts’ homes, or from what you have keys of, or from your friend’s home. There is no sin on you to eat together or alone. When you enter your home, greet your family with a greeting from Allah, blessed and good. Thus Allah makes the Verses clear to you so that you may understand.
62. The [true] believers are those who believe in Allah and His Messenger [Muhammad]. And when they are with him on a common matter, they do not leave until they ask his permission. Truly, those who ask your permission are the ones who [truly] believe in Allah and His Messenger. If they ask your permission for an affair of theirs, give permission to whomever you will of them, and ask Allah to forgive them. Truly, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
63. Do not call the Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] among you as you call one another. Allah knows those of you [i.e., hypocrites] who slip away [under false excuses]. As for those who disobey his commands, they have to beware lest they should be tested or a painful torment should befall them.
64. To Allah certainly belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. He knows your condition now, and He knows the Day when you will be returned to Him. Then He will inform them of what they did [in the worldly life]. And Allah knows everything.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Blessed is He Who sent down the Criterion [i.e., The Quran] to His slave [i.e., Muhammad] to be a Warner to all.
2. [It is He] to Whom the dominion of the heavens and the earth belongs. And He does not have a son, nor does He have a partner in the dominion. And He has created everything in the right measure.
3. Yet they [i.e., polytheists] have taken besides Him gods that create nothing, but they themselves [i.e., the gods] are created, and possess neither harm nor benefit for themselves, and can cause no death, nor life, and nor resurrection [of the dead].
4. Those who disbelieve say, “This [i.e., The Quran] is nothing but a lie invented by him [i.e., Muhammad], and others have helped him with it.” What they say is unjust and untrue.
5. And they [i.e., disbelievers] said, “[The Quran is] tales of the ancients, which he [i.e., Muhammad] has written, for they are dictated to him in the morning and in the evening.”
6. Say, [O Muhammad], “It [i.e., The Quran] has been sent down by Him Who knows the secrets of the heavens and the earth. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
7. And they say, “Why does this Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] eat food and walk in markets [as we do]? Why has an angel not been sent down to him to be a Warner with him?”
8. “Or why has a treasure not been granted to him [i.e., Muhammad], or why has he not had a garden of which he may eat?” And wrong-doers say, “You do not follow but a bewitched man.”
9. See, [O Muhammad], how they [i.e., disbelievers] make false accusations against you, so they have gone far astray and thus they cannot find the Right Path.
10. Blessed is He Who, if He wills, will grant you what is better than that. [He will grant you] Gardens under which rivers flow, and He will grant you palaces [in Paradise].
11. They deny the Hour [i.e., the Day of Resurrection]. And We have prepared a flaming Fire for those who deny the Hour.
12. If it [i.e., the Fire] sees them [i.e., disbelievers] from a far place, they hear it raging and roaring.
13. And when they are thrown chained into a narrow place [in Hell], they will exclaim in it for destruction.
14. Do not exclaim today for one destruction, but for many.
15. Say, [O Muhammad], “Is that [Hell] better or the Paradise of Eternity, which was promised to the pious?” It [i.e., Paradise] will be their reward and their final abode. 16. In it [i.e., Paradise] they will have whatever they desire, living in eternity. [That is] a promise of your Lord, and it has to be fulfilled.
17. And when He [i.e., Allah] gathers them [i.e., disbelievers] and what they worship besides Allah, He will say [to the so-called partners like Jesus and angels], “Were you the ones who led these servants of mine [i.e., disbelievers] astray, or did they go astray by themselves?”
18. They will say, “Glory is to You [i.e., Allah]. It was not for us to take protectors [i.e., partners] besides You. But you granted more time [and life enjoyment] to them and their fathers, so that they forgot the Reminder [i.e., The Quran], and they have become a destroyed people.”
19. They [i.e., the false partners] will belie you [i.e., polytheists] with regard to what you will say. Then you will never be able to avoid [punishment], nor will you get support. Whoever of you takes partners with Allah, We shall make him taste a painful torment.
20. And We [i.e., Allah] have not sent Messengers before you but they did eat food and did walk in markets. And We have made some of you a trial for some. Will you be patient [with this trial]? And your Lord sees best [whom to choose to be a Messenger].
21. And those who do not expect a Meeting with Us [on the Day of Resurrection] said, “Why are angels not sent down to us, or why do we not see our Lord?” They are so arrogant and so rebellious.
22. When they [i.e., disbelievers] see angels [at the moment of death or on the Day of Resurrection], they [i.e., the angels] will say [to them], “There is no good news for criminals now.” And they will say, “[Paradise is] forbidden to you.”
23. And We shall consider all the deeds which they [i.e., disbelievers] did as scattered dust.
24. At that time, the dwellers of Paradise will enjoy the best abode and the most convenient repose.
25. When the heaven is rent asunder with clouds, and angels are sent down,
26. The true dominion then belongs to the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah]. That Day [of Resurrection] will be a hard one for disbelievers.
27. On that Day a wrong-doer will bite at his hands saying, “I wish I had taken the [Right] Path with the Messenger.”
28. “Woe to me! I wish I had not taken so-and-so as a friend.”
29. “He [i.e., that friend] led me astray away from the Reminder [i.e., The Quran] after it had come to me. And Satan always lets man down.”
30. And the Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] said, “O my Lord! My people has indeed taken this Quran as deserted [i.e., not acting according to it].”
31. Similarly, there were enemies among criminals against every Prophet. Sufficient is your Lord as a Guide and Helper.
32. And those who disbelieve say, “Why has The Quran not been sent down to him [i.e., Muhammad] as one piece?” We have sent it down as such [i.e., in parts] so as to strengthen your heart with it, and We [i.e., Allah] have made it so clear.
33. And they [i.e., disbelievers] do not bring an argument but We bring you the truth [against what they claim] and a better explanation.
34. Those who will be gathered on their faces to Hell will be in the worst abode and most astray away from the [Straight] Path.
35. And We gave Moses the Scripture and made his brother Aaron as his helper.
36. And We said, “You both go to the people who rejected Our Signs.” So We utterly destroyed them.
37. And [remember] Noah’s people. When they belied the Messengers, We drowned them and made them a Sign [i.e., lesson] for people. And We have prepared a painful torment for wrong-doers.
38. And [remember] ’Ad, Thamud, the dwellers of Ar-Rass, and many generations in between.
39. And for each [of them] We set examples [and lessons], and each We destroyed utterly.
40. And they had passed by the town [i.e., Sodom, of Prophet Lot] which was rained with stones [as a punishment by Allah]. Did they not see it? They did see it, but they did not expect Resurrection.
41. And when they [i.e., disbelievers] see you [i.e., Muhammad], they mock at you [saying], “Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a Messenger?”
42. “He would have been about to mislead us from our gods if we had not been patient in worshipping them.” They will come to know, when they see the torment [in the Hereafter], who is most astray away from the [Right] Path.
43. Have you [i.e., Muhammad] seen him who has taken his vain desires as his god? Are you going to be a watcher over him?
44. Or do you think that most of them [i.e., disbelievers and polytheists] hear or understand? In fact, they are like cattle or even more astray from the [Straight] Path [than cattle].
45. Have you not seen how your Lord spreads the shadow? Had He willed, He would have made it motionless, but We have made the sun an indicator of it.
46. Then We withdraw it [i.e., the shadow] to Us little by little.
47. And it is He Who makes the night a covering for you and [makes] sleep a time for rest, and He makes the day a time for moving about [i.e., work].
48. And it is He Who sends winds as heralds of good news foretelling His Mercy [i.e., rain], and We send down pure water from the sky,
49. So as to give life with it to a dead [i.e., plantless] land and so as to let many cattle and people drink of it.
50. And We distribute it [i.e., rain] among them [i.e., people] so that they may remember [the Grace of Allah], but most people choose nothing but ingratitude [to Allah]. 51. Had We willed, We would have raised a Warner [i.e., a Messenger] in every town, [but We have sent you, Muhammad, to all humans].
52. So do not obey disbelievers, and strongly strive [against them] with it [i.e., The Quran].
53. And it is He Who has created the two types of water: one palatable and sweet and one salt and bitter. And He has made a complete barrier between them.
54. And it is He Who has created from semen human beings, with relatives by blood and relatives by marriage. And your Lord is All-Powerful.
55. And they [i.e., polytheists] worship besides Allah what does not benefit them nor harm them. And a disbeliever is always a helper [of Satan] against his Lord.
56. And We have not sent you [i.e., Muhammad] but a bearer of glad news [for believers] and a Warner [for disbelievers].
57. Say, “I do not ask you to reward me for my mission. I only wish to see you taking the [Right] Path to your Lord.”
58. And put your trust, [O Muhammad], in the Ever-Living, Who does not die, and glorify and praise Him. And Sufficient He is as the All-Knower of the sins of mankind.
59. [It is He] Who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days, then He rose over the Throne [in a way that suits His Majesty]. He is the Most Gracious, so ask this Quran about Him.
60. And if it is said to them [i.e., disbelievers], “Prostrate yourselves to the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah],” they say, “What is the Most Gracious? Are we to prostrate [to Him], for you command us?” And they become more and more averted.
61. Blessed is He Who has created large stars in the sky and has created a great lamp [i.e., the sun] and a bright moon.
62. And it is He Who has made the night and the day follow each other, for him who likes to remember [Allah] or likes to be grateful [to Him].
63. The servants of the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah] are those who walk solemnly, and if the foolish address them harshly, they reply back so gently.
64. And they spend the night worshipping their Lord: in prostration and in standing.
65. And they say, “O our Lord! Save us from the torment of Hell, for its torment is truly permanent.”
66. Truly, it is an evil abode and a bad dwelling place.
67. And they, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but they are moderate in between [the two extremes].
68. And they do not worship another god along with Allah. They do not kill him whom Allah has forbidden to kill, except in justice. And they do not commit adultery. And whoever does so will get punishment,
69. [And] torment will be doubled to him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide in it forever in disgrace,
70. Except those who repent and do good deeds. As for such people, Allah will change their sins into good deeds. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
71. And whoever repents and does good deeds, Allah will truly accept his repentance.
72. And they do not offer a false testimony. And if they pass by some evil acts, they do not take part in them.
73. And they, when reminded of the Signs of their Lord, do not fall dumb and blind at them [i.e., they listen and obey].
74. And they say, “O our Lord!Let our wives and children be a source of delight for us [i.e., obedient to Allah] and let us be leaders to the pious.”
75. Such people [with such qualities] will be rewarded with the highest place [in Paradise] for their patience, receiving greetings and respect [from angels],
76. Abiding in it [i.e., Paradise] forever. What an excellent abode and resting place it is!
77. Say, [O Muhammad, to disbelievers], “Your Lord does not pay attention to you except because you invoke Him. But now you have denied [Him], so your torment will be permanent.”
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Ta-Seen-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. These are the Verses of the Clear Book [i.e., The Quran].
3. You [i.e., Muhammad] do not overgrieve because they do not believe.
4. If We will, We can send down to them [i.e., disbelievers] from the heaven a Sign to which their necks submit [to Allah in humility].
5. Whenever a recent revelation from the Most Gracious comes to them, they turn away from it.
6. They have belied [The Quran], and they will see the result of their mockery.
7. Have they not seen the earth? How much of good kinds of plants We have grown on it!
8. In that there is certainly a Sign [of Allah’s Power]; yet, most of them [i.e., people] are not believers.
9. And truly, your Lord is the All- Exalted, the Most Merciful.
10. And [remember] when Allah called Moses to go to the wrong-doing people,
11. The people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear [Allah]?
12. He [i.e., Moses] said, “O my Lord. I fear that they will belie me.”
13. “And [I fear that] my heart will straiten and my tongue will not be fluent, so send for Aaron [to be with me].”
14. “And they [i.e., Pharaoh’s people] have a charge [of a crime] against me, and I fear that they may kill me.”
15. He [i.e., Allah] said, “No, [do not be afraid]. You both go with Our Signs. Verily, We are listening with you [i.e., supporting you].”
16. “You both go to Pharaoh, and say to him, ‘Verily, we are the Messengers of the Lord of the worlds.’
17. ‘So send the people of Israel with us.’ ”
18. He [i.e., Pharaoh] said [to Moses], “Did we not bring you up among us when you were a child? And you stayed with us many years of your life.”
19. “And you did what you did [i.e., killing a man]; you are indeed ungrateful.”
20. Moses said, “I did it then when I was ignorant [i.e., before being a Messenger].”
21. “So I fled away from you when I was afraid of you. And then my Lord granted me wisdom and made me one of the Messengers.”
22. “And that favor of yours to me, with which you reproach me, is nothing compared with your enslavement of the [whole] people of Israel.”
23. Pharaoh said, “And what is the Lord of the worlds?”
24. Moses said, “[He is] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you seek the truth.”
25. Pharaoh said to those around him, “Do you hear [what he says]?”
26. Moses said, “[He is] your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.”
27. Pharaoh said, “Truly, your Messenger who has been sent to you is insane.”
28. Moses said, “[He is] the Lord of the east and the west and what is between them, if you [really] understand.”
29. Pharaoh said, “If you take another god instead of me, I will imprison you.”
30. Moses said, “Even if I bring you a Clear Sign?”
31. Pharaoh said, “Bring it if you are telling the truth.”
32. So Moses threw his stick, and suddenly it became a fearful serpent.
33. And he took out his hand, and suddenly it was white to beholders.
34. Pharaoh said to the chiefs around him, “This is indeed a skilled magician.”
35. “He wants to drive you out of your land with his magic. What then do you suggest?”
36. They said, “Put him and his brother off [for a time], and send callers to the towns,”
37. “To bring to you every skilled magician.”
38. So the magicians were gathered at a fixed time on a fixed day.
39. And it was said to people, “Are you attending [the occasion],”
40. “So that we may follow the magicians if they win?”
41. When the magicians came, they said to Pharaoh, “Are you going to reward us if we are the winners?”
42. Pharaoh said, “Yes, and you will surely be very close to me.”
43. Moses said to them, “Throw what you want to throw.”
44. So they threw their ropes and sticks and said, “By Pharaoh’s might, we will surely be the winners.”
45. Then Moses threw his stick, and it suddenly swallowed all that they falsely had shown.
46. Then the magicans fell down prostrate,
47. And they said, “We believe in the Lord of the worlds,”
48. “The Lord of Moses and Aaron.”
49. Pharaoh said, “You have believed in Him before I gave you permission. It is your chief [i.e., Moses] who taught you magic. You will come to know. I will cut off your hands and your feet from opposite sides, and I will crucify you all.”
50. They [i.e., the magicians] said, “Do whatever you want to do. To our Lord we will surely return.”
51. “We really hope that He will forgive our sins, for we are the first to believe.”
52. And We revealed to Moses, [saying], “Leave by night, you and your people, for you will be followed [by Pharaoh and his army].”
53. Then Pharaoh sent callers to the towns [to collect fighters],
54. [Saying], “These [i.e., Moses’ people] are really few in number.”
55. “And they have enraged us [by leaving like that].”
56. “And we all are always cautious of their plots.”
57. So We expelled them [i.e., Pharaoh’s people] from gardens and springs,
58. And treasures and honorable places [into the desert following Moses and his people].
59. Thus, We made the people of Israel inherit them.
60. So they [i.e., Pharaoh’s army] pursued them [i.e., Moses’ people] at sunrise [at sea-shore].
61. When the two hosts saw each other, Moses’ companions said, “We are surely overtaken.”
62. Moses said, “No, my Lord is surely with me. He will guide me [to the right way].”
63. Then We revealed to Moses, saying, “Strike the sea with your stick.” And the sea split, and each part [of the sea] became like a huge mountain.
64. Then We brought the others [i.e., Pharaoh’s party] nearer and nearer [to that point].
65. And We saved Moses and all those with him,
66. And then We drowned the others.
67. In that there is surely a Sign; yet, most of them did not believe.
68. And, truly, your Lord is the All-Exalted, the Most Merciful.
69. And recite to them the story of Abraham, 70. When he said to his father and his people, “What do you worship?”
71. They said, “We worship idols, to which we are always devoted.”
72. He said, “Do they hear you when you invoke them?”
73. “Or do they benefit or harm you?”
74. They said, “No, but we have found our fathers doing so.”
75. He [i.e., Abraham] said, “Do you see what you have been worshipping,”
76. “You and your forefathers?”
77. “They are an enemy to me, but the Lord of the worlds”
78. “[Is the One] Who has created me and guides me,”
79. “And He is the One Who feeds me and provides me to drink,”
80. “And He is the One Who cures me if I become sick,”
81. “And He is the One Who causes me to die and then He gives me life [again].”
82. “And He is the One Who will forgive my sins on the Day of Judgment, I hope.”
83. “O my Lord! Grant me wisdom, and make me join the righteous.”
84. “And make me honored by generations to come.”
85. “And make me dwell in the Garden of Delight [i.e., Paradise].”
86. “And forgive my father, for he is one of those who are astray.”
87. “And do not disgrace me on the Day of Resurrection,”
88. “The Day when wealth and children will be of no use,”
89. “Except one who comes to Allah with a pure heart [i.e., with no hypocrisy or polytheism].”
90. And Paradise will be brought near to the pious.
91. And the [Hell] Fire will be brought clear to those astray.
92. And it will be said to them, “Where are those that you used to worship,”
93. “Besides Allah? Do they help you now or [even] help themselves?”
94. Then they will be thrown [and piled] into it [i.e., Hell], they and those astray,
95. And all the hosts of Satan.
96. They [i.e., polytheists] will say while quarrelling in it [i.e., Hell],
97. “By Allah, we were in clear error, indeed,”
98. “When we made you [i.e., false gods] equal to the Lord of the worlds.”
99. “And all this [error] was caused by criminals [i.e., Satan and evil humans].”
100. “[Now] we have no intercessors [to help us],”
101. “Nor do we have any close friend.”
102. “We wish that we were given another chance to be among believers.”
103. Verily, there is a lesson in that; yet, most of them are not believers.
104. And your Lord is truly the All- Exalted, the Most Merciful.
105. Noah’s people belied the Messengers.
106. [Remember] when their brother Noah said, “Will you fear [Allah]?”
107. “I am certainly an honest Messenger [to you],”
108. “So fear Allah, and obey me.”
109. “And I do not ask of you a reward for it, for my reward is only from the Lord of the worlds.”
110. “So fear Allah, and obey me.”
111. They said [to Noah], “Are we to believe in you, when the meanest [of people] are the ones who have followed you?”
112. He said, “How can I know what they used to do?”
113. “Their account rests only with my Lord, if you really know.”
114. “And I am not to drive believers away [from me].”
115. “I am only a clear Warner [against disobeying Allah].”
116. They said, “If you do not cease, Noah, we will stone you [to death].”
117. Noah said, “O my Lord! My people have belied me.”
118. “So judge between me and them, and save me and those with me of believers [from their evil].”
119. And We saved him and those with him in the filled ship.
120. Then We drowned the rest [i.e., disbelievers] after that.
121. In that there is certainly a Sign [i.e., a lesson]; yet, most of them do not believe.
122. Truly, your Lord is the All-Exalted, the Most Merciful.
123. ’Ad [also] belied the Messengers.
124. Their brother Hud said to them, “Will you fear Allah?”
125. “I am an honest Messenger to you, indeed.”
126. “So fear Allah, and obey me.”
127. “And I do not ask of you a reward, for my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds.”
128. “Do you build palaces on every hill, just for luxury?”
129. “And you build towers so that you may live forever.”
130. “And if you punish [someone], you behave like tyrants.”
131. “So fear Allah, and obey me.”
132. “Fear Him Who has provided you with all that you know.” 133. “He granted you cattle and children,”
134. “And gardens and springs.”
135. “I fear for you the torment of a Great Day [i.e., the Day of Judgment].”
136. They [i.e., Hud’s people] said, “It is the same with us: whether you preach us or you do not.”
137. “This [i.e., our religion] is the religion of our forefathers, [and we will not change it].”
138. “And we will not be punished.”
139. So they belied him, and thus We destroyed them. In that there is indeed a Sign [i.e., a lesson]; yet; most of them do not believe.
140. Verily, your Lord is the All-Exalted, the Most Merciful.
141. Thamud [i.e., the people of salih] [also] belied the Messengers.
142. Their brother Salih said to them, “Will you fear [Allah]?”
143. “I am surely an honest Messenger to you.”
144. “So fear Allah, and obey me.”
145. “And I do not ask of you a reward, for my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds.”
146. “Will you be left here in security [if you rebel against Allah]?”
147. “[Remember the bounties of Allah:] gardens and springs,”
148. “And green crops and date-palms best to digest.”
149. “And you carve houses in the mountains for luxury.”
150. “So fear Allah, and obey me.”
151. “And do not obey sinners,”
152. “Who spread evil in the land, and do not reform.”
153. They said to Salih, “You are only bewitched.”
154. “You are not but a human like us, so bring a Sign, if you are telling the truth.”
155. He said [to his people], “This is a she-camel [created by Allah now, coming out from a rock, as you have demanded]. She drinks on a day, and you [all] drink on another.”
156. “And do not harm her, lest the torment of a Great Day should touch you.”
157. But they killed her, and then they became regretful.
158. So the torment seized them. In that there is surely a Sign; yet, most of them are not believers.
159. Truly, your Lord is the All-Exalted, the Most Merciful.
160. The people of Lot [also] belied the Messengers.
161. Their brother Lot said to them, “Will you fear Allah?”
162. “Truly, I am an honest Messenger to you.”
163. “So fear Allah, and obey me.”
164. “And I do not ask of you a reward; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds.”
165. “Do you go into males [i.e., male homosexuality],”
166. “And leave those whom your Lord has created for you, i.e., your wives? You really go beyond the limits.”
167. They said, “If you do not cease [preaching us], O Lot, you shall be driven out [of our town].”
168. He said, “I do hate your evil behavior [i.e., homosexuality].”
169. “O my Lord! Save me and my family from what they do.”
170. So We saved him and all his family,
171. Except an old woman [i.e., his wife], who remained behind.
172. Then We destroyed the others.
173. And We rained on them a rain [of stones]. And what a terrible rain it was on those who had been warned [in vain before]!
174. Verily, in that there is a real Sign; yet, most of them do not believe.
175. Truly, your Lord is the All-Exalted, the Most Merciful.
176. The dwellers of Al-Aykah [near Midian] belied the Messengers [also].
177. Shuaib said to them, “Will you fear [Allah]?”
178. “I am certainly an honest Messenger to you.”
179. “So fear Allah, and obey me.”
180. “And I do not ask of you a reward. My reward is only with the Lord of the worlds.”
181. “Give the measure in full, and do not decrease the measure.”
182. “And give the straight just weight.”
183. “And do not reduce what is right and due to people, and do not cause mischief in the land.”
184. “And fear Him Who created you and the previous generations.”
185. They said, “You are only one of those who are bewitched.”
186. “And you are not but a human like us, and we think that you are one of the liars.”
187. “So let pieces [of stone] from the sky fall on us, if you tell the truth.”
188. He said, “My Lord knows best what you do.”
189. But they belied him, so the torment of the Day of the Shadow seized them. It was a torment of a great day.
190. In that there is a Sign, indeed; yet, most of them do not believe.
191. And your Lord is truly the All-Exalted, the Most Merciful.
192. And, truly, it [i.e., The Quran] is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds,
193. Brought down by the honest angel Gabriel,
194. Upon your heart, [O Muhammad], so as to be one of the Warners [i.e., Messengers],
195. In the clear Arabic language.
196. And it [i.e., The Quran] is announced in the Scriptures of former peoples [i.e., The Torah and The Gospel].
197. Is it not a Sign to them that the [honest] learned scholars of the people of Israel confirmed its truth?
198. Had We revealed it [i.e., The Quran] to a non-Arab [who knows nothing of Arabic],
199. And had he recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.
200. Thus We [i.e., Allah] have made it [i.e., disbelief] dwell in the hearts of disbelievers.
201. They do not believe in it [i.e., The Quran] until they taste the painful torment,
202. Which will come to them suddenly, without them expecting it.
203. Then they will say, “Can we be given a respite?”
204. They used to hasten Our torment [in their mockery and arrogance].
205. Do you see? If We let them enjoy life for [some] years,
206. And then to them comes what they were promised [i.e., torment],
207. Their past enjoyment will be of no use to them.
208. And We have never destroyed a town but it had its Warners [i.e., Messengers],
209. To remind [people], and We never wrong anyone.
210. And it [i.e., The Quran] has not been brought by devils,
211. For they would not like it, nor can they produce it,
212. [And] truly, they were forbidden from hearing it.
213. So do not invoke with Allah another god lest you should be punished.
214. And warn your near relatives [first, O Muhammad].
215. And lower your wing [i.e., be kind] to those believers who followed you.
216. If they disobey you, say, “I am indeed innocent of what you do.”
217. And have trust in the All-Exalted, the Most Merciful,
218. Who sees you, [O Muhammad], when you stand up [for prayer in the night],
219. And [sees] you prostrating [during the five regular prayers].
220. Truly, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.
221. Shall I tell you, [O people], upon whom devils come down?
222. They come down upon every sinful liar.
223. They [i.e., devils] give ear [to what goes on in the heaven], and most of them are liars.
224. And poets are followed by those who are astray.
225. Do you not see that they speak about every subject [in truth or falsity],
226. And that they say what they do not do?
227. [That is so] with the exception of those [poets] who believe and do good deeds, and mention Allah much [in their poetry], and [use their poetry] to reply back to the lies of disbelievers. And wrong-doers will come to know their end.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Ta-Seen. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.] These are the Verses of the Quran, a Clear Book.
2. [It is] guidance and glad news to believers,
3. Who perform prayer and give zakat and believe in the Hereafter with certainty.
4. Truly, as for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have made their deeds fair-seeming to them, so they wander blindly about [in their life].
5. Those will have the worst torment, and in the Hereafter they will be the greatest losers.
6. And you, [O Muhammad], do receive The Quran from the All-Wise, the All-Knowing.
7. [Remember] when Moses said to his wife, “I have seen a fire. I shall bring you some information from there or bring you a burning brand so that you may warm yourselves.”
8. When he came to it [i.e., the light], he was called, “Blessed is he who is in and about the light [i.e., of angels]. And Glory is to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.”
9. “O Moses! Verily, it is I, Allah, the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.”
10. “And throw your stick.” When he [i.e., Moses] saw it shake like a jinni, he ran away, not [daring] to look back. “O Moses! Do not be afraid, for Messengers do not get afraid in front of Me.”
11. “As for those who have done wrong and then changed evil for good, I am Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
12. “And if you put your hand into your bosom, it will come out white without a disease. With nine Signs [i.e., miracles] [go] to Pharaoh and his people, for they are rebellious [against Allah].”
13. When Our Signs came to them so clear, they said, “This is clear magic.”
14. And they denied them [i.e., Our Signs] because of [their] injustice and arrogance although at heart they were convinced [that the Signs were from Allah]. So see what was the end of mischief-makers.
15. And We gave David and Solomon knowledge, and they said, “Praise is due to Allah, Who has preferred us to many of his believing servants.”
16. And Solomon inherited David [in knowledge, prophethood, kingship] and said, “O people! We have been taught birds’ language, and we have been granted of everything [by Allah]. Verily, this is the evident Grace [of Allah].”
17. And for Solomon, hosts of jinn, men, and birds were gathered [and lined up], marching forward in order.
18. When they [all] came to a valley of ants, an ant said, “O ants! Get into your dwellings, lest you should be destroyed by Solomon and his hosts without them knowing.”
19. So he [i.e., Solomon] smiled at her speech [, for he knew animals’ languages,] and said, “O my Lord! Let me thank You for Your Favor which You granted to me and to my parents, and [help] me to do good deeds that please you, and admit me by Your Grace [into Paradise] with Your righteous servants.”
20. And he [i.e., Solomon] inspected the birds and said, “Why do I not see the hoopoe, or is he absent?”
21. “I will punish him severely, or slaughter him, or he has to bring me a convincing excuse.”
22. It was not a long time when he [i.e., the hoopoe] [came to Solomon] and said, “I have known what you do not know, and I have brought you true news from Sheba [i.e., Saba’].”
23. “I have found a ruling woman there, and she has of everything, and hers is a great throne.”
24. “I have found her and her people prostrating themselves to the sun instead of Allah. And Satan has made their [evil] deeds fair-seeming to them, so he has turned them away from the [Right] Path, and thus they have no guidance.”
25. “[Satan has tempted them] not to prostrate themselves to Allah, Who knows what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and He knows what you conceal and what you reveal.”
26. There is no god but Allah, the Lord of the Great Throne.
27. He [i.e., Solomon] said, “We shall see if you have told the truth or not.”
28. “Take this letter of mine and deliver it to them [i.e., Queen Balqees of Sheba and her people]. Then draw back, and see their answer.”
29. She said, “O chiefs! I have received an important letter.”
30. “It is from Solomon, and it reads: ‘In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.’
31. ‘Do not be arrogant, and come to me submitting [to Allah].’ ”
32. She said [after reading Solomon’s letter], “O chiefs! Advise me with regard to this matter. I shall not decide to do anything until you give your opinions.”
33. They said, “We are of power and of skill at war. But the matter rests with you: see what you like to command.”
34. She [i.e., Queen Balqees] said, “Truly, if kings enter a town [by force], they destroy it and make the highest of its people the lowest. Thus they actually do.”
35. “I am going to send them [i.e., Solomon and his people] a gift, and I will see his answer as reported by [my] messengers.”
36. When the messengers [of Balqees] came to Solomon [with the gift], he said, “Are you giving me money? What Allah has given me is better than what He has given you. It is you who love gifts [, not I].”
37. [Solomon said to the chief of her messengers, rejecting her gift], “Return to them. We will come to them with an army that they cannot face. And we will drive them out from there in disgrace.”
38. He said, “O chiefs! Which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me in obedience?”
39. One of the strong jinn said, “I will bring it to you before you leave your place. And I am strong [enough to carry it] and honest [enough to bring it with its jewels untouched].”
40. Another one who knows the Scripture said [to Solomon], “I bring it [i.e., her throne] to you within your eye’s twinkle.” When he [i.e., Solomon] saw it [i.e., her throne] before him, he said, “This is from my Lord’s Grace; He tests me whether I thank [Him] or not. And whoever thanks [Allah], he thanks for himself. And whoever is ungrateful, my Lord is Rich, Generous.”
41. He said, “Disguise her throne for her. Let us see if she will recognize it or not.”
42. When she came, it was said [to her], “Is this your throne?” She said, “It looks very much like it.” And Solomon said, “We were given knowledge before her, and we had submitted [to Allah] before she did.”
43. What she used to worship instead of Allah has prevented her [from belief in Allah], for she was of a disbelieving people.
44. It was said to her, “Enter the palace.” When she saw it, she thought that it was a pool of water, so she uncovered her legs. He [i.e., Solomon] said, “It is a strong palace made of glass.” She said, “O my Lord! I have wronged myself, and I submit, with Solomon, to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.”
45. And We sent to Thamud their brother Salih, [saying to them], “Worship Allah.” Then, suddenly, they became two quarrelling parties [i.e., believers and disbelievers].
46. He said, “O my people! Why do you desire to hasten the evil [i.e., Allah’s torment] instead of His Mercy? It is better for you to seek the Forgiveness of Allah so that you may receive His Mercy.”
47. They said [to Salih], “We consider you and those with you as ill omen.” He said, “Your recompense is with Allah, and you are being tested [by Him].”
48. In the town [of Salih] there were nine men, causing mischief in the land and reforming nothing.
49. They said, “Let us swear by Allah that we will kill him [i.e., Salih] and his family in the night, then we shall say to his nearest relative, ‘We did not see the destruction of his family, and we are surely telling you the truth.’ ”
50. And they made a plot [i.e., to kill Salih], and We made a plot without them knowing.
51. See how the end of their plot was: We destroyed all of them and their people.
52. Their houses were utterly ruined because of their wrong-doing. Truly, in that there is a Sign for people who know.
53. And We saved those who believed and feared [Allah].
54. And [remember] Lot, when he said to his people, “Do you commit the major sin in public?”
55. “Do you go into men instead of your wives? You are really senseless.”
56. The answer of his people was nothing but this: “Drive the family of Lot out from your town, for they want to be pure.”
57. So We saved him [i.e., Lot] and his family, except his wife, whom We destined to be one of those destroyed.
58. And We sent down on them a rain [of stones]. What an evil rain it was on those warned!
59. Say, [O Muhammad], “Praise is due to Allah, and peace be on His servants whom He has chosen [i.e., Messengers]. Which is better: Allah or the partners that they take [with Him]?”
60. Who created the heavens and the earth and sends down water from the sky for you? With it [i.e., water] We cause to grow gardens with delight, whose trees you have no ability to grow [by yourselves]. Is there any other god with Allah? No; yet, they believe in equals to Allah.
61. Or Who has made the earth a settled abode [for mankind], has placed rivers through it, has made firm mountains in it, and has set a barrier between the two seas [i.e., salt water and sweet water]? Is there another god with Allah? No; yet, most of them do not know.
62. Or Who responds to one in distress if he invokes Him, removes evil, and makes you succeed one another: generation after generation? Is there another god with Allah? You only remember a little.
63. Or Who guides you in the darkness of the land and the sea? And Who sends winds as heralds of glad news announcing His Mercy [i.e., rain]? Is there another god with Allah? Exalted is Allah above what they take as partners [with Him].
64. Or Who starts creation and shall repeat it [in the Hereafter]? And Who provides you [with your provisions] from the sky and the earth? Is there a god with Allah? Say, “Bring your evidence, if you are telling the truth.”
65. Say, “None in the heavens and the earth knows the Unseen except Allah, and they do not know when they shall be resurrected.”
66. They [i.e., humans] are unable to foretell the time of the Hereafter. As for disbelievers, they [even] doubt it and are ignorant of it.
67. And those who disbelieve say, “When we become dust, we and our fathers, shall we be resurrected?”
68. “We and our fathers before us were promised this, but these are only old tales.”
69. Say [to them, O Muhammad], “Go about in the land, and see what the end of criminals has been.”
70. And do not grieve over them [i.e., disbelievers], and do not be in distress for what they plot.
71. And they [i.e., disbelievers] say, “When will this promise [of the Hereafter] be, if you are truthful?”
72. Say, “What you hasten may be very close to you.”
73. “And, truly, your Lord is of Grace to people, but most of them do not thank.”
74. And your Lord does know what their hearts conceal and what they reveal.
75. And nothing hidden in the heavens and the earth is but in a Clear Record.
76. This Quran does narrate to the people of Israel most of what they differ in.
77. And it [i.e., The Quran] is surely guidance and mercy for believers.
78. Your Lord does judge between them [i.e., all people] by His Judgment [in the Hereafter]. And He is the All-Exalted, the All-Knowing.
79. So put your trust in Allah. Truly, you [i.e., Prophet Muhammad] are on the clear truth.
80. Surely, you cannot make the dead hear. Similarly, you cannot make the deaf [i.e., disbelievers] hear the call [to Islam] if they turn away.
81. And you cannot guide the blind [i.e., disbelievers] out of their error. You can only make hear those who believe in Our Signs, and thus they submit [to Allah].
82. And when the word of torment passes against them [i.e., the nearness of the Hour], We shall bring out from the earth a beast speaking that [most] people are not certain of Our Signs.
83. And [remember] the Day when We shall gather of every nation a group of those who belie Our Signs, and they will be driven [to the place of judgment].
84. When they come [and stand before Allah], He [i.e., Allah] will say [to them], “Did you belie My Signs without understanding them or what were you doing?”
85. And the word [of torment] will be fulfilled against them [i.e., disbelievers] because of their wrong-doing, and thus they will not say a word [in defence of themselves].
86. Do they not see that We have made the night for their rest and the day for their activity? In that there are surely Signs for those who believe.
87. And [remember] the Day when the Trumpet will be blown [on the Day of Resurrection]. And all those who are in the heavens and the earth will be horrified, except whomever Allah exempts [like martyrs]. And all will come to Him in obedience.
88. And you see mountains thinking that they are still, whereas they actually pass away like clouds. That is the Work of Allah, Who has perfected everything. Verily, He is Well-Acquainted with what you do.
89. Whoever comes with a good deed [on the Day of Judgment] will be rewarded with what is better, and he will be saved from the terror of that Day.
90. And whoever comes with an evil deed will be thrown on his face in the Fire. Will you be recompensed anything but what you used to do?
91. [Say, O Muhammad], “I am commanded to worship the Lord of this town [i.e., Makkah], which He has made sacred. And to Him belongs everything. And I am commanded to be one of Muslims.”
92. “And [I am commanded] to recite The Quran.” Whoever receives guidance does so for himself. And whoever is astray, say [to him], “I am only one of the Warners.”
93. And say, “Praise is due to Allah. He will show you His Signs, and you will recognize them. And your Lord is not unaware of what you do.”
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Ta-Seen-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. These are the Verses of the Clear Book [i.e., The Quran].
3. We recite to you [i.e., Muhammad] some of the news about Moses and Pharaoh [in Egypt] in truth for a people who believe [in Allah].
4. Pharaoh was truly a tyrant in the land. He made its people sects, oppressing a group of them [i.e., people of Israel]: killing their sons and letting their females live. Verily, he was one of mischief-doers.
5. And We wished to do a favor for those who were oppressed in the land, to make them rulers, and to make them inheritors,
6. And to give them power in the land, and to show Pharaoh, Haman, and their hosts what they feared of them.
7. And We inspired Moses’ mother, “Suckle him [i.e., Moses]. If you fear for him, cast him into the river, and do not fear, and nor grieve. We will bring him back to you and make him one of the Messengers.”
8. Then one of Pharaoh’s maids picked him up, so that [later] he [i.e., Moses] became an enemy and [a source of] grief to them. Verily, Pharaoh, Haman, and their hosts were wrong-doers.
9. And Pharaoh’s wife said [to her husband], “[This child will be] a source of happiness for me and you. Do not kill him. He may benefit us, or we may adopt him.” They did not know [what would happen].
10. And the heart of Moses’ mother became empty, and she was about to disclose her secret [i.e., losing her son]. But We [i.e., Allah] strengthened her heart [with patience], so that she remained one of the believers.
11. And she said to his sister, “Follow him.” And she [i.e., his sister] saw him at a long distance, without them perceiving.
12. And We had already forbidden suckling women for him, so she [his sister] said, “Shall I guide you to a woman who will rear him for you and give him a good care?”
13. So We brought him [i.e., Moses] back to his mother so that she might be pleased so that she might not grieve, and so that she might know that Allah’s Promise is true; yet, most people do not know.
14. When he [i.e., Moses] became an adult, perfect [in strength and manhood], We granted him wisdom and knowledge [i.e., Prophethood]. And thus We reward good-doers.
15. And he [i.e., Moses] entered the city, with its people unaware, and he found there two men fighting: one of his party [i.e., Israeli] and one of his enemies [i.e., a Coptic]. The one of his party asked him for support against the other one, so Moses hit him and killed him. He said, “This is of Satan’s doing; he is indeed a clear misleading enemy.”
16. He [i.e., Moses] said, “O my Lord! Truly, I have wronged myself, so forgive me.” And He forgave him, for He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
17. He said, “O my Lord! For Your grace upon me, I will never be a supporter of criminals [i.e., wrong-doers].”
18. And he [i.e., Moses] became afraid looking about in the city. And, suddenly, the one who had asked for his help the day before asked for it [again]. Moses said to him, “You are a real wrong-doer.”
19. When he [i.e., Moses] decided to hit the one who was an enemy to both, [i.e., another Coptic], he [i.e., the Israeli] said, “O Moses! Do you want to kill me as you killed one yesterday? You really want to be a tyrant in the land, and you do not want to be a good-doer.”
20. And a man came running from the farthest part of the city, and said, “O Moses! The chiefs [of Pharaoh] are plotting to kill you, so get out [from this city]. I sincerely advise you to do so.”
21. So he went out from the city, filled with fear. He said, “O my Lord! Save me from the wrong-doers.”
22. And when he went towards [the land of] Midian, he said, “I ask my Lord to guide me to the Right Path.”
23. And when he [i.e., Moses] arrived at the water of Midian, he found there a group of men watering [their sheep] and two women keeping back [their sheep]. He said, “What is the matter with you both?” They both said, “We do not water [our sheep] until the shepherds leave. And our father is a very old man.”
24. So he watered [their sheep] for them both, and then he sat in the shade [of a tree], and said, “O my Lord! I am in need of the good that you have granted to me.”
25. Then one of them [i.e., the two girls] came to him walking shyly and said, “My father calls you so as to reward you for watering [our sheep].” When he [i.e., Moses] came to him [i.e., their father] and told him his story [with Pharaoh], he said [to Moses], “You have been saved from the people who are wrong-doers.”
26. One of them [i.e., the two girls] said, “O my father! Hire him. The best to hire is certainly the one who is strong and honest.”
27. He [i.e., their father] said, “I want to give one of these two daughters of mine to you as a wife provided that you serve me [as a shepherd] for eight years. But if you serve ten, that will be a favor from you. I do not want to be hard on you, and you will find me one of the righteous, if Allah wills.”
28. He [i.e., Moses] said, “That is a settled deal between you and me. Whichever of the two terms I serve will not be unfair to me. And Allah is the Witness over what we say.”
29. When Moses had fulfilled the term [of ten years] and was traveling with his family, he saw a fire in the direction of the Mount and said to his family, “Wait here. I have seen a fire, by which I may be guided to the right way or bring a fire brand so that you may warm yourselves.”
30. When he arrived at it [i.e., the fire], he was called from the right side of the valley, in the blessed place, from the tree: “O Moses! Verily, I am Allah, the Lord of the worlds.”
31. “And throw your stick.” When he saw it shaking like a jinni, he fled back away and never looked back. [Allah said,] “O Moses! Come back, and do not be afraid. You are one of those who are safe and secure.”
32. “Put your hand in your bosom, and it will come out white with no disease. And put your hand close to your side, and you get rid of the fear [which you suffered from seeing the snake]. Thus, you have two [miracles] as proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his chiefs, who are really rebellious [against Allah].”
33. He [i.e., Moses] said, “O my Lord! I did kill one of them, and I am afraid that they will kill me.”
34. “And my brother Aaron is more eloquent in speech than I, so send him with me as a helper confirming what I say, for I fear that they will belie me.”
35. Allah said, “We will support you through your brother. And We will give you both [enough] power so that they cannot harm either of you. With Our Signs you both and those who follow you will be the winners.”
36. When Moses came to them [i.e., Pharaoh’s people] with Clear Signs, they said, “This is nothing but fabricated magic, and we have not heard of this [monotheism] among our fathers.”
37. And Moses said, “My Lord knows best him who has come with guidance from Him and who will have the best end. Truly, wrong-doers will never succeed.”
38. And Pharaoh said, “O chiefs!I have never known that you have a god other than me. And you, Haman, build me a tower of clay bricks so that I May see Moses’ God. And I think that he is one of the liars.”
39. And he [i.e., Pharaoh] and his hosts were arrogant in the land and unjust, and they thought that they would not return to Us.
40. So We took him and his hosts and drowned them [all] in the sea. See what was the end of the wrong-doers.
41. And We made them leaders to the Fire [for whoever imitates them], and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped.
42. And We allow believers to curse them in this worldly life, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be despised.
43. And We gave Moses the Scripture [i.e., The Torah] after We destroyed previous generations, as enlightment to people, guidance, and mercy so that they might remember.
44. And you [i.e., Muhammad] were not near the western Mount when We gave Moses the commandment, and you were not a witness [there].
45. But We created generations [after Moses]; that was a long time ago. And you were not dwelling among the people of Midian reciting Our Verses to them. But We sent you their real stories [through Revelation].
46. And you [i.e., Muhammad] were not near the Mount when We called [Moses]. But it is because of your Lord’s Mercy [that We sent you as a Messenger] to warn a people to whom no Warner had come before, so that they may remember [Allah].
47. [If We had not sent you as a Messenger] and if torment had seized them, they would have said, “O our Lord! Why did you not send a Messenger to us so that we might follow your Verses and be among believers?”
48. When the truth [i.e., the Message of Islam] had come to them from Us, they said, “Why is he [i.e., Muhammad] not given like what was given to Moses [of miracles like the stick]?” Did they not reject what Moses was given? They said, “[These are] two types of magic [i.e., The Torah and The Quran] helping one another, and in both we do disbelieve.”
49. Say [to them, O Muhammad], “[If so,] then bring a book from Allah having more guidance than they both and I will follow it, if you are truthful.”
50. If they do not do so, [and they will not], then know that they follow their vain desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his own desires without guidance from Allah? Truly, Allah does not guide a people who are wrong-doers.
51. And We have explained to them everything in detail [in The Quran] so that they may remember.
52. As for those [truthful] people to whom We gave the Scripture [i.e., The Torah and The Gospel] before it [i.e., The Quran], they believe in it [i.e., The Quran].
53. And when it is recited to them, they say, “Truly, it is the truth from Our Lord. And we have actually been Muslims [i.e., submitting to Allah] even before it.”
54. Those [who believed in the Scriptures and The Quran] will be given their reward twice for their patience. And they react kindly to evil deeds, and they spend [in charity] of what We provide them with.
55. And when they [i.e., believers] hear vain talk [from disbelievers], they ignore it and say, “We have our deeds, and you have yours. Peace be upon you. We do not seek [the way] of those who are ignorant.”
56. You, [O Muhammad], do not guide whomever you like, but Allah guides whoever wills [to be guided]. And He knows best those who are guided.
57. And they [i.e., disbelievers] say, “If we follow the guidance [i.e., Islam] with you [i.e., Muhammad], we will be hurt in our land [by disbelievers].” Have We not given them a secure sanctuary, to which fruits of all types are brought as a provision from Us? But most of them do not know.
58. And how many a town We have destroyed for its tyranny and ingratitude. And those are their houses not inhabited after them except a little, and We have been the inheritors.
59. And your Lord will never destroy any town until He sends to their mother town [i.e., Makkah] a Messenger who recites to them Our Verses. And We do not destroy towns unless their people are wrong-doers.
60. And whatever you have been given is only a [temporary] enjoyment and ornament of this worldly life. And what is with Allah [i.e., His reward in the Hereafter] is much better and more lasting. Do you not understand?
61. Is one whom We promised a good promise [i.e., Paradise], which he will find true, like one who enjoys this worldly life [in disbelief] and then, on the Day of Resurrection, he will be brought [to punishment]?
62. And [remember] the Day when He [i.e., Allah] will call to them [i.e., disbelievers, saying], “Where are My [so-called] partners whom you used to invoke?”
63. Those about whom the Word will be true [i.e., the so-called partners] will say, “O our Lord! These whom we misled were misled by us as we ourselves were astray. We are innocent of them, and they were not worshipping us.”
64. And it will be said, “Call upon your [so-called] partners [so that they may help you].” And they will call upon them, and they will not answer them. And they will see the torment, and [will wish] if they had been guided.
65. And [remember] the Day when He [i.e., Allah] will call to them [i.e., disbelievers], “What was your answer to the Messengers?”
66. They will be unable to give any answer, and they will be unable to ask one another.
67. As for him who repented and did good deeds [in this life], he will be among those who are successful [in the Hereafter].
68. And your Lord creates whatever He wills and chooses. They have no choice. Glory is to Him. And He is exalted above all that they associate [with Him].
69. And your Lord knows what their hearts conceal and what they reveal.
70. And He is Allah. There is no god but Him. Praise is due to Him in the first [life] and the last [life]. To Him Judgment belongs, and to Him you will be returned.
71. Say, [O Muhammad], “What would you do if Allah made the night continuous for you until the Day of Resurrection? Which god other than Allah can [then] bring you light? Do you not hear?”
72. Say, [O Muhammad], “What would you do if Allah made the day continuous for you until the Day of Resurrection? Which god other than Allah can [then] bring you a night in which you rest? Do you not see?”
73. It is of His Mercy that He has made for you the night and the day so that you may rest [in the night] and seek of His Bounty [in the day] and so that you may thank [Him].
74. And [remember] the Day when He [i.e., Allah] will call to them [i.e., polytheists] and say, “Where are My [so-called] partners whom you used to invoke?”
75. And We shall choose from every nation a witness and say, “Where is your proof [for other gods]?” They will then know that the truth is with Allah [alone], and their false invented partners will disappear from them.
76. Truly, Korah was one of Moses’ people [i.e., his nephew], but he was arrogant towards them. And We gave him of treasures so much that their keys would be so heavy even for a group of strong men. His people used to advise him saying, “Do not be boastful and ungrateful [with your wealth], for Allah does not like those who are as such.”
77. “And seek, with the wealth which Allah has given you, the Hereafter. And do not forget your share of this life [i.e., lawful enjoyment], and do good [to people] as Allah has done good to you, and do not seek mischief in the land, for Allah does not like mischief-doers.”
78. He [i.e., Korah] said, “I have been given the wealth which I have because of my knowledge [or because Allah knows that I deserve it].” Did he not know that Allah had destroyed many generations before him, who were stronger and richer than he? And sinners will not be asked about their sins [, for Allah knows them].
79. So he [i.e., Korah] went out before his people in his pomp. Those who sought this life said, “We wish that we had the like of what Korah has. He has a lot of wealth, indeed.” 80. But those of knowledge said, “Woe to you! The reward of Allah [i.e., Paradise] is really better for one who believes and does good. And this reward is given only to those who are patient [in worshipping Allah].”
81. So We caused the earth to swallow him and his house. He had no one to support him against Allah, nor could he even support himself.
82. And those who wished the day before to be as rich as he was began saying, “Do you not see that Allah gives wealth to whomever He wills and prevents it from whomever He wills? Had it not been for Allah’s Mercy, we would have been destroyed with him [i.e., Korah]. Do you not see that disbelievers will never succeed?”
83. That home of the Hereafter [i.e., Paradise] We shall assign to those who do not seek tyranny or mischief in the land. And the [good] end is for the righteous.
84. Whoever does good will have better than it. And whoever does evil will be recompensed only for what he used to do.
85. Truly, He Who has revealed The Quran to you, [O Muhammad], will bring you back to Makkah, [which disbelievers forced him to leave]. Say, “My Lord knows best him who is guided and him who is in plain error.”
86. And you, [O Muhammad], did not seek that the Book [i.e., The Quran] would be revealed to you. It is only your Lord’s Mercy, so do not ever support disbelievers.
87. And do not let disbelievers’ resistance turn you away from the Verses of Allah after they have been revealed to you. And call [people] to [the Way of] your Lord, and do not ever be one of polytheists.
88. And do not invoke with Allah any other god. There is no god but Him. Everything will perish except Him. To Him belongs Judgment, and to Him you shall be returned.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Alif-Lam-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. Do people think that they will be left alone just because they say, “We have believed,” without being tested?
3. We [i.e., Allah] have tested those before them, and Allah certainly knows those who are true [in their belief], and He certainly knows those who are liars.
4. Or do those who do evil deeds think that they can escape Our punishment? What an evil judgment theirs is!
5. As for him who hopes for meeting with Allah [in the Hereafter, and works for it], the Promise of Allah is certainly coming. And He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.
6. And whoever strives [in Allah’s Cause], he certainly does so for himself, since Allah is truly not in need of any creatures.
7. As for those who believe [in Allah] and do good deeds, We will expiate from them their misdeeds, and We will reward them for the best of what they used to do.
8. And We commanded man to be kind to his parents. And if they pressure you to associate partners with Me, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I shall inform you of what you used to do.
9. As for those who believe and do good deeds, We will surely make them enter [Paradise] with the righteous.
10. Some people say, “We believe in Allah.” But if they [i.e., hypocrites] are hurt because of their belief, they consider people’s harm like Allah’s torment. And when victory comes from your Lord, they say, “We have been with you.” Is Allah not more aware of what people’s hearts conceal?
11. Truly, Allah does know those who [sincerely] believe and those who are hypocrites.
12. And those who disbelieved said to those who believed, “Follow our way, and we shall bear your sins.” And they [actually] bear nothing of their sins; they are [only] liars.
13. They will certainly bear their own sins and sins added to their sins [for wronging others]. And on the Day of Resurrection they will surely be accountable for what they used to invent [against Allah].
14. And We sent Noah to his people, and he stayed with them nine hundred and fifty years [calling them to believe in Allah, but they belied him], so the flood destroyed them while they were wrong-doing.
15. And We saved him [i.e., Noah] and those with him in the ship, and We made it a Sign for people.
16. And [remember] Abraham when he said to his people, “Worship Allah and fear Him. That is better for you, if you really know.”
17. “What you worship instead of Allah is only idols, a falsity which you invent [with your own hands]. Indeed, what you worship instead of Allah cannot provide you with any provision, so seek [your] provision from Allah, and worship Him, and thank Him. To Him you will be returned.”
18. “And if you belie [me],[many] nations before you did the same. The duty of the Messenger is only to convey [the Message] plainly.”
19. Do they not see how Allah begins creation and then repeats it [on the Day of Resurrection]? That is easy for Allah, indeed.
20. Say, “Travel in the land, and see how He started the creation. Then Allah will create the last creation [on the Day of Resurrection]. Allah is truly Able to do everything.”
21. He punishes whomever He wills, and He grants mercy to whomever He wills. And to Him you will be returned.
22. And you cannot escape in the earth nor in the heaven [from Allah]. And you have no protector or supporter besides Allah.
23. As for those who deny the Signs of Allah and the Meeting with Him, they are to despair of My Mercy, and they will have a painful torment.
24. The answer of his [i.e., Abraham’s] people was nothing but their saying, “Kill him or burn him.” But Allah saved him from the fire. In that there are surely Signs for people who believe.
25. And Abraham said, “You have worshipped idols instead of Allah, making this an occasion of your gathering and friendship in this life. But on the Day of Resurrection you will deny and curse one another. And your abode will be the Fire forever, and you will have no helpers.”
26. So Lot believed in him [i.e., Abraham], who said, “I will emigrate for the sake of my Lord. He is the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.”
27. And We bestowed on him [i.e., Abraham] Isaac and Jacob, and We gave his offspring both Prophethood and the Book. And We granted him his reward in this life, and in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous.
28. And [remember] Lot, when he said to his people, “You commit sodomy, which none committed before you.”
29. “Truly, you practise sodomy with men, commit highway robbery, and do all evil deeds in your meetings.” The only answer of his people was their saying, “Bring us the torment of Allah, if you are truthful.”
30. Lot said, “O my Lord! Give me victory over the mischief-making people.”
31. When Our messengers [of angels] came to Abraham with the glad news, they said, “We are surely going to destroy the people of this town [i.e., Sodom], for its people are really wrong-doers.”
32. Abraham said, “But there is Lot in there.” They said, “We do know who is there. We will surely save him and his family, except his wife, who will be among those to be destroyed.”
33. When Our messengers [of angels] came to Lot, he became grieved and distressed, [not knowing they were angels]. They said, “Do not be in fear, and do not grieve. We will save you and your family, except your wife, who will be one of those to be destroyed.”
34. “We will bring down on the people of this town a great torment from the sky for their rebellion [against Allah].”
35. And We [i.e., Allah] have left of it [i.e., the destroyed town] a Clear Sign for people who understand.
36. And [We sent] to [the people of] Midian their brother Shu’aib. He said, “O my people! Worship Allah, and hope for [the reward of] the Last Day, and do not make mischief in the land.”
37. But they belied him, so the earthquake seized them, and they became dead at their own homes.
38. And [We destroyed] [the people of] ’Ad and Thamud; and their homes show you the destruction which hit them. And Satan made their [evil] deeds fair-seeming to them, and thus turned them away from the [straight] Path although they were able to see it.
39. And We [i.e., Allah] destroyed Korah, Pharaoh, and Haman after Moses had brought them the clear proofs [from Allah]; yet, they were arrogant in the land. And they could not escape [Our punishment].
40. So We [i.e., Allah] punished each according to his sin. On some [i.e., the people of ’Ad] We sent a violent stony wind. Some [i.e., the people of Thamud] were seized by the Cry. Some [i.e., Korah] We caused the earth to swallow. Some [i.e., Noah’s people and Pharaoh and his people] We drowned. And Allah did not wrong them, but they did wrong themselves.
41. Those who worship gods other than Allah are like the spider, which builds [for itself] a house, but this house is the weakest of all, if only they knew.
42. Allah, truly, knows what they invoke instead of Him, and He is the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.
43. And We set such examples for people, and they are understood by men of knowledge only.
44. Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth. Truly, this is a Sign for believers.
45. Recite, [O Muhammad, to people], what has been revealed to you of the Book [i.e., The Quran], and perform prayer. Truly, prayer prevents [one] from the major sins and evil deeds. And glorifying Allah is still more significant. And Allah knows what you do.
46. And do not argue with the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] except in a very gentle way, excluding wrong-doers. And say to them, “We [i.e., Muslims] have believed in what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to you. And our God and your God are the same and One. And we submit to Him.”
47. And We [i.e., Allah] have sent down the Book [i.e., The Quran] to you, [O Muhammad], [as We sent down Books to previous Messengers]. Those to whom We gave the Scripture [and who understand it well] and some of these [Arab pagans] believe in it [i.e., The Quran]. And no one rejects Our Signs except disbelievers.
48. And you [i.e., Muhammad] could not read any book before it [i.e., The Quran], nor could you write. Had you been able to read and write, they [i.e., disbelievers] would have been given a pretext to doubt [the source of The Quran].
49. In fact, it [i.e., The Quran] is Clear Verses in the minds [and hearts] of those of knowledge [who learn it by heart]. And Our Signs are not denied except by wrong-doers.
50. And they [i.e., disbelievers] say, “Why are not Signs [i.e., miracles] sent down to him [i.e., Muhammad] from his Lord?” Say, [O Muhammad], “The Signs are with Allah. I am only a plain Warner [against disobedience to Allah].”
51. Is it not sufficient for them [i.e., disbelievers] that We have sent down the Book [i.e., The Quran, as a miracle] recited to them? Truly, in that there is a mercy and a reminder to people who believe.
52. Say, [O Muhammad, to disbelievers], “Sufficient is Allah as a witness between you and me. He knows what is in the heavens and the earth. And those who believe in falsity [i.e., other gods] and deny Allah are the real losers.”
53. And they [i.e., disbelievers] ask you [i.e., Muhammad] to hasten the torment for them [from Allah]. Had it not been for an already-appointed time, the torment would have come to them [when they asked for it]. But it will surely come to them suddenly without them perceiving.
54. They [i.e., disbelievers] ask you [i.e., Muhammad] to hasten the torment for them, and Hell will surely encompass disbelievers
55. On the Day when the torment [i.e., the Fire] will cover them from above them and from under their feet; and it will be said to them, “Taste what you used to do.”
56. O My servants who believe! My earth is truly very wide, so you should worship Me.
57. Everyone is going to taste death, and then to Us you shall be returned.
58. As for those who believe [in Allah] and do good deeds, We will give them high dwellings in Paradise, under which rivers flow, abiding in there forever. Excellent is the reward of good-doers,
59. Who are patient and who place their trust in their Lord.
60. And there are many living creatures that cannot carry their provision; yet, Allah provides them and you. And He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.
61. And if you ask them, “Who has created the heavens and the earth and has subjected the sun and the moon [for you]?”, they will surely say, “Allah.” How then are they far from the truth?
62. Allah gives generously of his provision to whomever He wills, and narrows it [for whomever He wills]. Truly, Allah knows everything.
63. And if you ask them, “Who sends down water from the sky, with which He gives life to the earth after its death?”, they will certainly say, “Allah.” Say, “Praise is due to Allah.” But most of them do not understand.
64. This life is nothing but a [temporary] amusement and a play, and the home of the Hereafter is the real [eternal] life, indeed, if only they knew.
65. If they are [in trouble] on the ship, they invoke Allah sincerely [to save them]. And when He saves them back to the shore, they associate partners [with Him].
66. Let them [i.e., disbelievers] deny what We have given them [of Guidance and Grace], and let them enjoy [life temporarily]. [Eventually,] they will come to know.
67. Have they [i.e., pagans] not seen that We have made their place [i.e., Makkah] a secure sanctuary, while people around them snatch one another? Do they believe in falsity [i.e., idols] and deny the Grace of Allah?
68. And who is more wrong than one who invents lies against Allah or denies the truth [i.e., Islam] when it is conveyed to him? Is there not in Hell an abode for disbelievers?
69. As for those who [sincerely] strive in Our Cause, We will guide them to Our Path. And Allah is truly with good-doers.
