The Holy Quran in English

Quran Contents

Translation Characteristics

The Holy Quran has been translated from Arabic, i.e., the language of the original text, into English by several scholars, may Allah reward them all. Each of them has done his best along years and years of scholarly work. However, I have found out that there is still a need for another translation of the meanings of The Holy Quran, a translation that draws nearer and nearer to perfection.

This translation, I can claim, has the following characteristics:

1. Some previous translations use words of Old English or Middle English, such as thy, thee, thine, thou. My choice has been to use Modern English all through the translation, seeking more clarity and easiness.

2. Most previous translations have chosen to use highly sophisticated vocabulary that cannot be understood except by the elite of English native speakers. In contrast, my choice has been to use the easiest vocabulary to make the translation understandable by the greatest number of people all over the world.

3. Most previous translations have used unusual grammatical structures. In contrast, I have used ordinary common simple ones, again for the purpose of achieving more comprehension by more people.

4. Some previous translations have left the pronoun without explaining its reference. In almost all cases, I have explained the referent of the pronoun, directly after it, e.g., they [believers], so as to get rid of any probable ambiguity.

5. Most previous translations have not explained cases of ellipsis, i.e., omission. In most cases, I have done so, e.g., so that they may thank [Allah]. I have added what is ellipted between square brackets for a clearer explanation.

6. Some previous translations have not mentioned the occasion. In many cases, I have made a reference to the occasion in order to make the text as clear as possible.

7. In many previous translations, a full stop appears at the end of every verse, even if the verse is completed in the following one. In this translation, a comma or no mark is made to appear in such cases.

8. In some cases, some previous translations have made mistakes in interpretation and mistakes in grammar as well.

In this translation, a great effort has been put in here to make the output as free as possible of such mistakes. In brief, this translation has these advantages:

1. It uses modern English in both vocabulary and grammar.

2. It has used the easiest vocabulary and the simplest grammatical structures.

3. Pronouns are usually explained in square brackets [ ].

4. Omitted words are usually added inside [ ] too.

5. Additions for a clear explanation are also put between [ ].

In short, the key words of this translation are easiness, simplicity, clearness, and correctness. I hope that this translation will be of success and reach more and more people who love to know the Word of Allah. Amen!

Introduction

The Holy Quran is the true Word of Allah, i.e., God. It was revealed by Allah through angel Gabriel to Prophet Muhammad in Makkah in A.D. 610, when Muhammad was forty years old.

The revelation of The Quran went on for twenty-three years: thirteen in Makkah and ten in Al-Madeenah. The revelation was piecemeal, parallel to occasions. It deals with monotheism, ethics, worship, stories of Prophets and Messengers, teachings about marriage, divorce, inheritance, peace and war, economics, politics, basics of life, the hereafter, Paradise and Hell, rules of behavior, the right and the wrong, and what is allowed and what is not allowed.

The Quran, with its 114 chapters, is the first source of Islam. It was revealed in Arabic. Its original is still the same, and its copies are exactly the same, with one version along history, with no word more or less. It has been translated into hundreds of modern languages, with the Arabic text always there.

It is the final pure Word of Allah. It requires Muslims to believe in Allah, i.e., God, angels, all revealed Books, all Messengers including Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad, and the Last Day. The Quran is highly respected by Muslims, recited at schools, read at homes and mosques, and learnt by heart (in part or in whole) by millions of people, including children of ten years or even less. The Quran has a great place in the hearts and minds of about two billion Muslims all over the world. No book on earth has ever had such a high rank in the hearts of people as The Quran has.

The Quran has no parallel as a book in being honored, no parallel in sacredness, no equal in effect on people, no equal in content, no parallel in style, no equal in rank or prestige, no equal in respect, and no parallel as a reference to the greatest number of people all over the world.

This is The Quran. It is the Word of Allah, no doubt. The truth. The Guidance. The Light. The Reminder.

Dear Brothers in humanity! Read the Word of your Lord, translated from Arabic into English. Listen to the Word of your Creator, your God, your Lord. I ask Allah, i.e., God, to guide us all to the Right Path. Amen.
