In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Alif-Lam-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. The Romans have been defeated [by the Persians],
3. In the lowest land [i.e., the area of the Dead Sea]. But after their defeat, they will be victorious,
4. Within several years [i.e., 3-9 years]. All the matter is with Allah, before and after [this event]. And on that day [of victory], the believers will rejoice
5. At the victory from Allah. He gives victory to whomever He wills. And He is the All-Exalted, the Most Merciful.
6. [It is] the Promise of Allah. Allah never breaks His Promise, but most people do not know.
7. They [i.e., disbelievers] know the external appearance of this worldly life, but they are heedless of the Hereafter.
8. Do they [i.e., people] not think deep about themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them except in truth and [only] to an appointed term. And many people, indeed, do not believe in meeting with their Lord [i.e., the Day of Judgment].
9. Do they not travel in the land and see what was the end of those [disbelievers] before them? They were stronger than they [i.e., pagans of Arabia] are; they tilled the land and populated it [even] more than they. Their Messengers came to them with Clear Signs, [but they denied them]. Allah did not wrong them, but they did wrong themselves.
10. Then the end of evil-doers was so terrible, for they rejected the Verses of Allah and they used to mock at them.
11. Allah begins creation, and then He repeats it. And then to Him you [i.e., all mankind] will be returned [on the Day of Resurrection].
12. And when the Hour [i.e., the Day of Resurrection] comes, criminals [i.e., polytheists] will be desperate.
13. And the partners [whom they associated with Allah] will not intercede for them, and they [themselves] will deny their partners.
14. And when the Hour is, they [i.e., people] will be separated [into believers and disbelievers].
15. As for those who believed [in Allah] and did good deeds, they will be enjoying their stay in the Garden [i.e. Paradise].
16. As for those who disbelieved and belied Our Signs and [belied] the Meeting of the Hereafter, they will be brought to torture [in Hell].
17. So glorify Allah in the evening and in the morning.
18. And praise is due to Him in the heavens and the earth, during the night and at noon.
19. He brings out the living from the dead, and He brings out the dead from the living. And He gives life to the land after its death. And similarly, you will be resurrected [after death].
20. And among His Signs is that He [i.e., Allah] created you [and your father Adam] from dust. Then you are humans scattered [all over the earth].
21. And among His Signs is that He created for you, from yourselves [i.e., the same species], wives so that you may find rest with them. And He has established love and mercy between you [i.e., men and women]. Surely, in that there are Signs for people who think.
22. And among His Signs are the creation of the heavens and the earth and the variety of your languages and colors. In that there are certainly Signs for people of knowledge.
23. And among His Signs are your sleep by night and day and your seeking for His Bounty. In that there are truly Signs for people who hear [and understand].
24. And among His Signs are that He shows you the lightning for fear [of thunderbolts] and for hope [for rain] and that He sends down water [i.e., rain] from the sky, with which He gives life to the earth after its death. In that there are surely Signs for people who understand.
25. And among His Signs is that the heaven and the earth are under His Command. And then when He calls you only once, you come out [alive] from the earth [i.e., from your graves].
26. And to Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and on the earth. All are submissive to Him.
27. And it is He Who begins creation and then He will repeat it, which is easier for Him. And He has no equal in the heavens and the earth. And He is the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.
28. Allah sets a parable for you from yourselves. Do you [i.e., polytheists] have partners from your slaves to share your wealth, which We granted to you, as equals with you? Thus We explain Our Signs to people who understand.
29. In fact, those who do wrong follow their own vain desires [i.e., taking partners with Allah] with no knowledge [i.e., proof]. Who will guide one whom Allah has sent astray? And they will have no helpers.
30. So [you Muhammad] set your face towards the pure religion [of monotheism], with which Allah has created man. No one can change the religion of Allah. That is the straight religion, but most people do not know.
31. Repent to Him [i.e., Allah], fear Him, perform prayer, and do not be among polytheists.
32. [Do not be] of those who changed their religion and became sects, each of which is pleased with what they have.
33. And when harm touches people, they invoke their Lord [i.e., Allah] repenting to Him. Then if He gives them of His mercy, some of them take partners with their Lord,
34. Showing ingratitude for what We have given them. So enjoy your life, but [eventually] you will come to know.
35. Or have We [i.e., Allah] sent down to them an authority [i.e., Revelation], which speaks of what they associate with Him?
36. And when We give people a mercy [of Ours], they rejoice at it. But when some evil touches them because of their sins, they become desperate.
37. Do they not see that Allah gives provision so generously to whomever He wills and that He straitens [it for whomever He wills]? Truly, in that there are Signs for people who believe.
38. So give to your relative his due, and so do to the needy and the wayfarer. That is better for those who seek to please Allah. And those are the successful.
39. And whatever you give [to people] as a gift expecting a better gift [in return] will not be rewarded by Allah. But if you give in charity seeking to please Allah, that will be doubled for you [by Allah].
40. Allah is He Who has created you, then He has provided you [with your needs], then He will cause you to die, and then He will give you life [again]. Does anyone of your [so-called] partners do anything of that? Glory is to Him. And He is Exalted above what they associate [with Him].
41. Disobedience [to Allah] has appeared in the land and the sea [i.e., islands] because of sins committed by people, and He makes them taste [torture] for some of their sins so that they may return [to Him].
42. Say, [O Muhammad], “Travel in the land, and see what was the end of those [sinners] before [you]. Most of them were polytheists.”
43. So follow, [O Muhammad], the straight religion before the coming of a Day [i.e., the Day of Resurrection] which cannot be avoided. On that Day, they [i.e., people] will be divided [in two groups: in Paradise or in Hell].
44. Whoever disbelieves, he will pay for his disbelief. And whoever does good, he prepares for himself a good place [in Paradise],
45. And He will reward those who believe and do good deeds of His Grace. Truly, He does not like disbelievers.
46. And among His Signs is that He sends winds with the glad news [of rain] to make you taste of His Mercy [through rain], and to make ships sail by His Command, and to enable you to seek of His Bounty [by traveling] so that you may thank [Him].
47. And We [i.e., Allah] sent before you, [O Muhammad], Messengers to their people. And they brought them Clear Signs. So We took revenge on those who were rebellious. And it is for Us to support believers.
48. Allah is He Who sends winds, which then raise clouds, which He spreads along the sky as He wills. He makes them into pieces, so you see rain drops come out from through them. When He causes it [i.e., the rain] to fall on whomever He wills, they rejoice at it,
49. Although they had been hopeless before the rain was sent down upon them.
50. So see the results of the Mercy of Allah: how He gives life to the land after its death. Truly, that One [too] is the One Who gives life to the dead. And He is Able to do everything.
51. And when We send a wind and they see their crops turn yellow, they will be ungrateful [and forgetful of Our previous Bounties].
52. Truly, [O Muhammad], you cannot make the dead [i.e., disbelievers] hear the call [to Islam], nor can you make the deaf hear it if they turn away.
53. And you cannot guide the blind [i.e., disbelievers] from their straying. You cannot make hear except those who believe in Our Signs, and thus they submit [to Us].
54. Allah is He Who created you from weakness [i.e., an embryo or infant]. Then He developed you from weakness into strength [i.e., an adult]. Then He gave you weakness and gray hair after strength [i.e., old age]. He creates whatever He wills, and He is the All-Knower, the All-Powerful.
55. And when the Hour comes, criminals will swear that they have stayed [in this life] only one hour [i.e., a very short time]. Thus they used to tell lies [in this life].
56. And those given knowledge and faith will say [to them], “You have stayed, according to the Record of Allah, until the Day of Resurrection. And this is the Day of Resurrection, but you did not know.”
57. On that Day, no excuse will be of benefit to wrong-doers, nor will they be given the chance to return to this worldly life.
58. And We have set for people examples of all types in this Quran. And if you, [O Muhammad], bring them a sign [i.e., a proof of your Prophethood], disbelievers will surely say [to believers], “You follow nothing but falsehood.”
59. Thus Allah seals up the hearts of those who do not know.
60. So be patient, [O Muhammad]. Verily, the Promise of Allah is true. And do not let those in doubt discourage you [from going on with your Message].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Alif-Lam-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. These are the Verses of the Wise Book [i.e., The Quran],
3. A guide and mercy to good-doers,
4. Who perform prayer and give zakat and who are certain of the Hereafter.
5. Those are on guidance from their Lord, and those are the successful.
6. And some people prefer vain talk so as to mislead others away from the Path of Allah, with no knowledge, and they take them [i.e., the Verses of the Quran] by way of mockery. Those will have a humiliating torture [in the Hereafter].
7. And when Our Verses [of The Quran] are recited to him, he turns away in arrogance as though he did not hear them, as if there was deafness in his ears. So bear the glad news to him of a painful punishment.
8. Those who believe [in Allah] and do good deeds will certainly have the Gardens of Delight,
9. Abiding there forever. This is the true promise of Allah. And He is the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.
10. He has created the heavens without any pillars which you can see. And He has set on the earth firm mountains lest it should shake with you. And He has spread on it [i.e., the earth] all kinds of animals. And We send down water from the sky, with which We let grow all kinds of wonderful plants.
11. This is the creation of Allah, so show Me what those [so-called] partners besides Him have created. In fact, wrong-doers are in clear error.
12. And We gave Luqman wisdom [and ordered him] to thank Allah. And whoever thanks [Allah] does so for himself. And whoever is ungrateful [to Him], Allah is indeed All-Rich [i.e., does not need thanks], Praise-Worthy.
13. And [remember] when Luqman said to his son advising him, “O my son! Do not join partners with Allah. Taking partners [with Allah] is certainly a great wrong-doing.”
14. And We [i.e., Allah] command man to be dutiful and kind to his parents. His mother bears him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Thank Me and your parents. To Me is your return.
15. And if they [i.e., your parents] pressure you to take partners with Me of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but treat them both in this world kindly. And follow the way of those who obey Me. Then to Me is your return, when I will inform you of what you used to do.
16. “O my son! If it [i.e., the deed] is equal in weight to a mustard seed hidden in a rock or in the heavens or the earth, Allah will bring it out. Allah is truly Subtle and Well-Aware.”
17. “O my son! Perform prayer and enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil. And be patient with whatever befalls you. This patience is an important matter.”
18. “And do not turn your face away from people. And do not walk in arrogance. Verily, Allah does not like arrogant boasters.”
19. “And be moderate in your walking [i.e., not too slow nor too fast]. And lower your voice, for the most hateful of all voices is that of the donkey.”
20. Have you [i.e., people] not seen that Allah has subjected to you what is in the heavens and what is in the earth and that He has completed His Bounties to you, whether apparent or hidden Bounties? Yet, some people argue about Allah with no knowledge, nor guidance, nor a Clear Book.
21. And when it is said to them, “Follow what Allah has sent down [of Revelation],” they say, “No. We are going to follow what we find our fathers following.” [Are they going to do so] even if Satan calls them to the torment of the Fire?
22. And whoever submits to Allah, doing good deeds, has held fast to the Covenant of Allah [i.e., that He will not torture him]. And to Allah is the decision of all matters.
23. And whoever disbelieves [in Allah], do not let his disbelief grieve you, [O Muhammad]. To Us is their return, and We shall inform them of what they used to do. Truly, Allah is the All-Knower of what hearts conceal.
24. We let them [i.e., disbelievers] enjoy [their life] a little, and then We will force them to a severe punishment.
25. And if you [i.e., Muhammad] ask them [i.e., polytheists] who has created the heavens and the earth, they will certainly say, “Allah.” Say, “Praise is due to Allah.” But most of them do not know.
26. To Allah belongs what is in the heavens and the earth. Verily, Allah is the All-Rich, the Praise-Worthy.
27. And if all the trees on the earth had been made pens and if the sea and seven seas more had been made ink, the Words of Allah would not have been exhausted. Truly, Allah is All-Exalted, All-Wise.
28. His creation and resurrection of you all are [as easy for Him] as [the creation and resurrection] of one single person. Verily, Allah is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.
29. Do you not see that Allah merges the night into the day [i.e., the day becoming longer in summer], and that He merges the day into the night [i.e., the night becoming longer in winter], and that He has subjected the sun and the moon [for you], each running to an appointed time, and that Allah is All-Aware of what you do?
30. That is because Allah is the Truth and what they invoke besides Him is falsity, and that is because He is the Most High, the Most Great.
31. Do you not see that ships sail through the sea by the Grace of Allah so that He may show you of His Signs? In that there are certainly Signs for everyone who is often patient and grateful.
32. And if high dark waves [in the sea] cover them, they invoke Allah in full submission. But when He leads them safe to land, some of them are ungrateful. And no one denies Our Signs except him who is an ungrateful deceiver.
33. O people! Fear your Lord, and fear a Day when no parent can help his son, and nor can a son help his parent. The Promise of Allah is certainly true, so do not be deceived by this worldly life, and do not let Satan turn you away from Allah.
34. Truly, with Allah is the knowledge of the Hour [i.e., the Day of Resurrection]. And He sends down rain, and He knows what is in wombs. And no one knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no one knows where he will die. Verily, Allah is All-Knower, All-Aware.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Alif-Lam-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. The revelation of the Book [i.e., The Quran] is, with no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds.
3. Or do they [i.e., disbelievers] say that he [Muhammad] has fabricated it? No, it is the truth from your Lord so that you [i.e., Muhammad] will warn a people not given a Warner [i.e., a Messenger] before [i.e., the Arabs at that time] in order that they may be guided.
4. Allah is He Who has created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days, and then He rose over the Throne. You have no protector or intercessor other than Him. Do you not remember?
5. He [i.e., Allah] manages affairs from the heaven to the earth, and then they go up to Him in one Day, which equals one thousand years of your own reckoning.
6. He is the Knower of the Unseen and the Seen, the All-Exalted, the Merciful,
7. Who has made perfect everything that He has created, and He began the creation of man [i.e., Adam] from clay.
8. Then He made his offspring from despised water [i.e., male and female discharge].
9. Then He gave him [i.e., man] the best shape and breathed into him life. And He gave you hearing, sight, and minds; yet, you thank Him a little.
10. And they [i.e., disbelievers] say, “When our bodies are turned into dust [after death], are we going to be created again?” They deny meeting their Lord [in the Hereafter].
11. Say, [O Muhammad to disbelievers], “The angel of death, who is in charge of you, will take your souls, and then you will be returned to your Lord [on the Day of Resurrection].”
12. And if only you could see criminals nodding their heads [out of humility and shyness] before their Lord [saying], “O our Lord! [Now] we see and hear, so send us back [to the world], and we shall do good deeds. [Now] we are certain [that the Hereafter is true].”
13. If We [i.e., Allah] had willed, We would have given every person his guidance. But My Word has passed that I will fill Hell [with all evil-doers] of jinn and people.
14. So taste [torment] because you forgot this Day [of Judgment]. We will treat you as though We had forgotten you [as well]. And taste the eternal punishment for what you used to do.
15. Those who believe in Our Verses, when reminded of them, fall down in prostration, and glorify and praise their Lord, and are not arrogant [i.e., ready to obey Him].
16. They pray in the night repeatedly, invoke their Lord in fear and hope, and spend [in charity] of what We have provided them with.
17. None knows what [great] pleasure is hidden for them [in Paradise] as a reward for what they used to do [in this world].
18. Is one who is a believer like one who is disobedient [to Allah]? They cannot be equal.
19. As for those who believe [in Allah] and do good deeds, they will have Paradise as an abode for what they used to do.
20. As for those who disobey [Allah], their abode will be the Fire. Whenever they wish to go out from it, they will be returned into it, and it will be said to them, “Taste the torment of the Fire, which you used to deny.”
21. And We will surely make them [i.e., sinners and disbelievers] taste of the nearest torment [in this world] before the great torment [in Hell] so that they may repent.
22. And who does more wrong than one who is reminded of the Signs of his Lord and yet he turns away from them? We will certainly punish criminals.
23. And We gave Moses the Scripture [i.e., The Torah], so, [O Muhammad], do not be in doubt of your meeting him [in the Night of Ascension]. And We made it [i.e., The Torah] guidance to the people of Israel.
24. And We made from among them leaders who guide [people] under Our Command when they were patient and [when] they believed in Our Signs with certainty.
25. Surely, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection with regard to what they used to differ in.
26. Is it not a guide to them that many generations We have destroyed before them, in whose houses they walk about? In that there are certainly Signs [i.e., lessons]. Do they not hear?
27. Or do they not see that We drive water to the plantless land, with which We grow crops, from which their cattle and they do eat? Do they not see?
28. And they [i.e., disbelievers] say, “When is this Judgment, if you are telling the truth?”
29. Say, [O Muhammad], “On the Day of Judgment, it will not benefit those who disbelieve to believe then, nor will they be given a respite.”
30. So turn away from them, and wait [to see their end]. They are surely waiting [too].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. O Prophet [Muhammad]! Fear Allah, and do not obey disbelievers and hypocrites. Allah is certainly All-Knowing, All-Wise.
2. And follow what has been revealed to you form your Lord. Allah is surely All-Aware of what you all do.
3. And place your trust in Allah, and Allah is Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs.
4. Allah has not made two hearts inside a man. And He has not made your wives your mothers if you [only] declare that they are like your mothers. Nor has He [i.e., Allah] made your adopted sons your real sons. That is [only] what you say with your tongues. And Allah says the truth, and He guides to the [Straight] Path.
5. Call them [i.e., the adopted sons] by their fathers’ names; this is more just with Allah. But if you do not know their fathers, they are your brothers in religion. And there is no sin on you concerning your mistakes, since you are to be blamed [only] for what your hearts intend. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
6. The Prophet [i.e., Muhammad] is closer [i.e., more merciful] to believers [i.e., Muslims] than they to themselves. And his wives are [like] their mothers [in respect and marriage prohibition]. And blood relatives are closer to one another [in inheritance shares] than believers and emigrants [from Makkah] according to Allah’s legislation, with the exception of kindness to your brethren [in the form of grants, wills, or charity]. This is what is written in the Record [of Allah].
7. And [remember] when We took from the Prophets their pledge [i.e., to convey the Message] and from you [i.e., Muhammad] and from Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus son of Mary. And We took from them a very strong promise,
8. So that He will ask the truthful [i.e., the Messengers] about their truthfulness [i.e., conveying the Message]. And He has prepared for disbelievers a painful torture.
9. O you who believe! Remember the Grace of Allah to you, when the troops [of your enemy] came against you [at the Battle of Al-Ahzab, i.e., the Battle of the Confederates]. And We sent against them a wind and troops that you did not see [i.e., angels]. And Allah is the All-Seer of what you do.
10. When they [i.e., disbelievers] came against you [i.e., Muslims] from above and from below, when you were quite frightened and your hearts reached your throats, and you had doubts about Allah [that He would not give you victory],
11. There and then, the believers were tested and were at a great trial.
12. And [remember] when the hypocrites and those with diseased hearts said, “Allah and His Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] promised us nothing but delusion.”
13. And [remember] when a party of them [i.e., the hypocrites] said, “O people of Al-Madeenah! You are not to stay here [i.e., with Muhammad, at the battlefield] any more, so return [to your homes].” And some of them [i.e., the hypocrites] asked for the Prophet’s permission saying, “Our homes are at danger [by the enemy].” And they were not at danger; they only wanted [an excuse for] fleeing [from the battle].
14. And if the enemy had entered against them [i.e., hypocrites] from all sides and they had been asked to disbelieve [in Allah], they would have done so with little hesitation.
15. And they had already made a covenant with Allah that they would never flee [from the battlefield], and a covenant with Allah must be fulfilled.
16. Say, [O Muhammad], “It will never benefit you to flee from death or from being killed; then you will enjoy [life] only for a little while.”
17. Say, “Who will protect you from Allah if He intends to harm you or to grant you mercy?” And they will not find a protector nor a helper instead of Allah.
18. Allah knows those among you who discourage their brethren from going to the battle saying to them, “Come and stay with us.” And they rarely go to war.
19. They [i.e., hypocrites] are misers towards you [i.e., Muslims]. When the battle comes, they look at you with their eyes filled with horror as though they would faint into death. And when the battle is over, they criticize you so harshly with their tongues, whereas they are too miserly to do anything good. Such [people] have not believed. Thus, Allah makes their deeds in vain. And this is so easy for Allah.
20. They [i.e., the hypocrites] think that the Confederates [i.e., those enemies of the Muslims at Al-Khandaq Battle or the Confederates’ Battle] have not yet withdrawn. And if the Confederates should come, they [i.e., hypocrites] would wish that they were staying away in the desert [i.e., away from the battlefield] asking about your news. And if they are among you, they will not fight but a little.
21. You [i.e., Muslims] have in Allah’s Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] a good example to follow, for one who hopes to please Allah, fears the Hereafter, and remembers Allah so often.
22. And when the believers saw the Confederates, they said, “This is what Allah and His Messenger [Muhammad] have promised us [i.e., victory over disbelievers], and what Allah and His Messenger promised has come to be true.” And it has only increased their faith and obedience [to Allah].
23. Among believers there are men who have fulfilled their covenant with Allah. Some of them have actually taken part in Jihad [i.e., war against the enemy], and some are waiting to do so, making no change in their commitment.
24. Allah will reward the truthful for their sincerity, and He will punish hypocrites if He wills or will forgive them [if He wills]. Allah is certainly Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
25. And Allah drove the disbelievers [i.e., the Confederates who besieged Al-Madeenah] back [defeated] in their rage, getting no gain [i.e., neither victory in this world nor Allah’s reward in the Hereafter]. And Allah forced them to withdraw [by wind and angels] with no fighting. And Allah is All-Strong, All-Exalted.
26. And Allah brought down those of the people of the Scripture [i.e., the Jews of Quraytha] who supported them [i.e., the disbelievers who besieged Al-Madeenah] from their castles and placed terror in their hearts, with you [Muslims] killing some and capturing some.
27. And He has made you inherit their land, their homes, and their wealth, and a [new] land not trodden by you before [through victories to come]. And Allah is Able to do everything.
28. O Prophet [Muhammad]! Say to your wives, “If you want this life and its glitter, let me set you free and give you your due rights.”
29. “And if you desire Allah, His Messenger, and the Hereafter, then Allah has prepared for the good-doers of you a great reward.”
30. O wives of the Prophet! If anyone of you commits a clear sin, her punishment will be doubled. And that is very easy for Allah.
31. And if anyone of you [i.e., the Prophet’s wives] submits to Allah and His Messenger and does good deeds, We shall double her reward, and We have prepared for her a noble provision [i.e., Paradise].
32. O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you obey Allah, do not soften your speech [when you talk to men], lest one of a diseased heart should be tempted, but speak in an honorable way.
33. And [you, the Prophet’s wives,] stay at your homes, and do not display yourselves as women used to do before Islam. And perform prayer, give zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah wishes to remove sin away from you, the Prophet’s family, and to thoroughly purify you.
34. And remember what is recited at your homes of the Verses of Allah [i.e., The Quran] and Wisdom [i.e., the sayings and deeds of Prophet Muhammad]. Allah is truly Most Courteous, Well-Acquainted with everything.
35. Truly, Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward to Muslims (men and women), believers (men and women), the obedient (men and women), the truthful (men and women), the patient (men and women), the humble (men and women), those who give in charity (men and women), those who fast (men and women), those who guard their chastity (men and women), and those who remember Allah (whether men or women).
36. It is not for a believer, male or female, to have options if Allah and His Messenger decree a matter. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he has gone far astray.
37. And [remember] when you said to him whom Allah has granted Grace to [by guiding him to Islam] and whom you, [O Muhammad], have done a favor to [by freeing him], “Keep your wife to yourself [i.e., do not divorce her], and fear Allah,” hiding in your heart what Allah is going to make known [i.e., that you are to marry Zaid’s divorced wife], fearing people, whereas you had better fear Allah. And when Zaid divorced her, We caused you to marry her so that believers may have no sin if they marry the ex-wives of their adopted sons if they divorce them. And the Command of Allah must be observed.
38. There is no blame on the Prophet [i.e., Muhammad] concerning what Allah has ordained for him. This is the Way of Allah with those [Messengers] before [i.e., to obey Allah]. And Allah’s Command is an inevitable decree.
39. [We praise those] who convey the Message of Allah, fear Him, and fear none except Allah. And Allah is Sufficient as a helper.
40. Muhammad is not the father of any of your men [, for all his sons died in childhood], but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last one of Prophets. And Allah is Aware of everything.
41. O you who believe!Remember Allah very much,
42. And glorify Him in the morning and in the evening.
43. He is the One Who sends mercy to you, and His angels ask Him to forgive you so that He will bring you out from darkness into light. And He is Most Merciful to believers.
44. Their [i.e., believers’] greeting, when they meet Him, will be “Peace”, and He has prepared for them a great reward [i.e., Paradise].
45. O Prophet [Muhammad]! We have sent you as a witness [of the Oneness of Allah], a bearer of the glad news [i.e., reward to believers], and a Warner [against Hell to disbelievers],
46. And one who calls to worshipping Allah with His Permission, as a lamp sending light [everywhere].
47. And bear the glad news to believers that they will receive a great bounty from Allah.
48.And [you Muhammad] do not obey hypocrites and disbelievers, and do not harm them [in revenge, for the time being]. And place your trust in Allah. And Sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.
49. O you who believe [in Allah]! If you marry believing women and then you divorce them before sexual intercourse, no waiting period is expected of them [i.e., they may re-marry immediately]. So honor them [with a gift], and set them free in an honorable way.
50. O Prophet [Muhammad]! We [i.e., Allah] have made lawful to you your wives to whom you gave their dowries [i.e., the bridal money given to the wife by her husband at marriage], and slave women possessed by you and granted to you by Allah, and the daughters of your paternal uncle, and the daughters of your paternal aunt, and the daughters of your maternal uncle, and the daughters of your maternal aunt, who has embraced Islam, and a believing woman who offered herself to the Prophet [as a wife], if the Prophet wishes to marry her, a privilege for you, not for other believers [i.e., that a woman can offer herself as a wife to the Prophet without a guardian or a dowry]. We know what We have ordained for them with regard to their wives and whom they possess so that there may be no blame on you. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
51. You, [O Muhammad], can postpone whomever you wish of them [i.e., your wives], and you can receive whomever you wish, and you can desire whomever you have already set aside; there is no blame on you. That is better so that they may become satisfied and not saddened and so that they may become pleased with what you give them all. And Allah knows what is in your hearts, and Allah is All-Knowing, Most Forbearing.
52. It is not allowed for you, [O Muhammad], to marry other women after this, nor to change them for other wives even if you admire their beauty except those slave women whom you possess. And Allah is the Watcher over everything.
53. O you who believe! Do not enter the Prophet’s homes unless you are invited to a meal, but do not wait for its readiness. But if you are invited, enter; and when you take your meal, leave his home, without staying for a talk. Such behavior annoys the Prophet, and he is shy to ask you to leave, but Allah is not shy to tell you the truth. And if you [i.e., believers] ask them [i.e., his wives] for anything, do so from behind a screen; that is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And you are not to harm the Messenger of Allah [i.e., Muhammad], nor can you ever marry his wives after him. That will be something very serious unto Allah.
54. Whether you reveal something or conceal it, Allah is certainly the All-Knower of everything.
55. There is no blame on them [i.e.,women] if they appear unveiled before their fathers, their sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, believing women, or their female slaves. And fear Allah; He is certainly the All-Witness over everything.
56. Verily, Allah sends His mercy on the Prophet [i.e., Muhammad], and His angels also ask Allah to forgive him. O you who believe! Ask Allah to bless him, and greet him with the greeting of peace.
57. Those who harm Allah and His Messenger are cursed by Allah in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah has prepared for them a humiliating punishment.
58. And those who harm believers (whether men or women) by false accusations commit a slander and a plain sin.
59. O Prophet! Tell your wives, your daughters, and the women of believers to draw their cloaks over their bodies. That will be better for them so as to be known as honorable in order not to be annoyed [by some intruders]. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
60. If hypocrites, those with diseased hearts, and those who spread false bad news in Al-Madeenah do not stop, We will let you [i.e., Muhammad] have authority over them, and then they will not neighbor you except for a short while,
61. With curse on them. Wherever they are found, they are to be seized and killed.
62. [That was] the law of Allah with regard to those [sinners] of passing generations. And you will find no change in the Law of Allah.
63. People ask you [i.e., Muhammad] about the Hour. Say, “Its knowledge is only with Allah. And who knows? The Hour may be very soon.”
64. Surely, Allah has cursed disbelievers and has prepared for them a Blazing Fire,
65. Dwelling in there forever, finding no protector or supporter. 66. On the Day when their faces will be turned over in the Fire, they will say, “We wish that we had obeyed Allah and had obeyed the Messenger.”
67. And they will say, “Our Lord! We obeyed our chiefs and leaders, and they misled us away from the [right] way.”
68. “O our Lord! Give them a double punishment, and curse them so much.”
69. O you who believe [in Allah]!Do not be like those who hurt Moses [with their tongues], and Allah made him innocent of what they said, and he was so honorable before Allah.
70. O you who believe! Fear Allah, and [always] tell the truth.
71. [If you do so,] He will guide you to do good deeds and He will forgive your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has won, indeed [i.e., admission to Paradise].
72. Verily, We [i.e., Allah] offered the commitment to obey Allah to the heavens, the earth, and mountains, and they refused to bear it fearing consequences, but man did bear it. He was unjust [to himself] and ignorant [of what to come].
73. [That offer was] so that Allah will punish male and female hypocrites and polytheists and so that Allah will forgive male and female believers. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Praise is due to Allah, to Whom belongs what is in the heavens and in the earth. And praise is due to Him in the Hereafter. And He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware.
2. He knows what goes into the earth and what comes out of it, and what comes down from the sky and what goes up to it. And He is the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving.
3. And disbelievers [in Allah] say, “The Hour will not come to us.” Say, [O Muhammad], “By my Lord, the Knower of the Unseen, it will certainly come to you. Nothing escapes His Knowledge, not even the weight of an atom in the heavens or the earth, not less or larger than that. It is all in a Clear Record.”
4. [That will be] so that He [Allah] will reward those who believe and do good deeds. Those will have forgiveness and a generous provision [i.e., Paradise].
5. As for those who do their best to stand against Our Signs, they will have a severe punishment.
6. And those given knowledge see what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], from your Lord is the truth and that it guides to the Path of the All-Exalted, the Praise-Worthy.
7. And those who disbelieve say [to one another], “Shall we show you a man telling you that if you die and turn into dust, then you will be created again?”
8. “Does he [i.e., Muhammad] invent lies against Allah or is he in madness?” No, but those who disbelieve in the Hereafter are to be punished, and they are far astray.
9. Do they not see what is before them and what is behind them of the heavens and the earth? If We will, We shall sink them in the earth or let fall on them pieces of the sky. In that there is a Sign to every repentant person.
10. And We granted David grace from Us [saying], “O mountains! Glorify [Allah] with him, and you birds [too].” And We made iron soft for him,
11. [Saying to him], “Make perfect shields with well-balanced rings. And do good deeds; I am certainly the All-Seer of what you all do.”
12. And [We subjected] to Solomon the wind, which could carry him in the morning across a month’s journey and in the afternoon across a month’s journey. And We made brass flow as a liquid for him. And We subjected jinn to work for him with his Lord’s Permission. And whoever of them [jinn] disobeys Our Command, We make him taste the torment of the Blazing Fire.
13. They [i.e., the jinn] made for him [i.e., Solomon] what he desired of houses, images, large basins, and fixed cooking pots. “Do good deeds, O family of David, with thanks [to your Lord].” And only a few people are grateful.
14. When We decreed death for him [i.e., Solomon], the jinn did not discover that he was dead except when a little worm kept on eating of his stick [slowly]. When he fell down, the jinn found out that if they had known the Unseen, they would not have stayed so long in the humiliating torture [i.e., serving Solomon for almost one year while he was actually dead leaning against his stick before it broke under him].
15. There was for Sheba a sign in their houses: two gardens, one on the right hand and one on the left hand. [It was said to them,] “Eat of the provision of your Lord, and thank Him. You have a good land, and your Lord is Oft-Forgiving.”
16. But they turned away [from Allah], so We sent against them flooding water. And We changed their two [rich] gardens into [poor] gardens producing bitter fruits, tamarisks, and some few lote-trees.
17. That was their recompense for their disbelief. And do We punish except one who is ungrateful?
18. And We made between them and the towns which We had blessed other known towns. And We made distances [between them] so easy to cover [saying], “Travel all along in safety by night and day.”
19. But they said, “O our Lord!Make our journeys longer,” and they wronged themselves [by their disbelief]. So We made them tales, and We scattered them all about. In that there are Signs for everyone who is often patient and thankful.
20. And the thought of Satan about them came true, so they followed him, except a few of believers [in Allah].
21. And Satan had no authority over them, but We desire to know those who believe in the Hereafter and those who are in doubt of it. And your Lord is Watchful over everything.
22. Say, [O Muhammad, to polytheists], “Invoke those whom you take as partners besides Allah. They possess no atom’s weight, neither in the heavens nor in the earth, and they have no single share in them, and they have no supporter.”
23. And intercession with Him is of no use except for him whom He permits. When fear leaves their [i.e., angels’] hearts, they [i.e., angels] say, “What has your Lord said?” They answer, “The truth. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
24. Say, [O Muhammad, to polytheists], “Who gives you provision from the heavens and the earth?” Say, “Allah. Either we [i.e., Muslims] or you are guided or in plain error [i.e., it cannot be that both of you and us are right].”
25. Say, [O Muhammad, to polytheists], “You are not accountable for what we do, and we are not accountable for what you do.”
26. Say, [O Muhammad], “Allah will gather you and us [on the Day of Resurrection], and then He will judge between us in justice. And He is the Just Judge, the All-Knower.”
27. Say, “Show me those whom you took as partners with Him. No, [there are no partners with Him]. He is the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.”
28. And We have not sent you [i.e., Muhammad] but a Messenger to all people as a bearer of glad news and as a Warner, but most people do not know.
29. And they [i.e., disbelievers] say, “When is this promise [i.e., the Day of Resurrection], if you [i.e., Muslims] are truthful?”
30. Say, [O Muhammad], “You have an appointment of a Day which you cannot delay for an hour or advance for an hour.”
31. And those who disbelieve say, “We shall never believe in this Quran, nor in what was before it.” If only you could see wrong-doers standing before their Lord blaming one another. The weak of them will say to the arrogant [chiefs], “Had it not been for you, we would have been believers.”
32. Those who were arrogant will say to the weak, “Did we force you not to be guided after guidance came to you? No, but you chose to be disobedient sinners.”
33. And the weak will say to those who were arrogant, “No, but you plotted [against us] by night and day, commanding us to disbelieve in Allah and take partners with Him.” And they all [the weak and the arrogant] will conceal their regret [for their past disobedience] when they see the torture. And We shall place chains round the necks of those who disbelieve. Are they punished except for what they used to do?
34. And We [i.e., Allah] have not sent a Warner [i.e., a Messenger] to a town but its wealthy men say, “We do not believe in your Message.”
35. And they say, “We are more in wealth and children, and we are not going to be punished.”
36. Say, [O Muhammad to them], “Truly, my Lord enlarges provision [i.e., wealth] to whomever He wills and restricts [it to whomever He wills too], but most people do not know.”
37. And it is not your wealth nor your children that make you closer to Us. As for those who believe and do good deeds, they will have a double reward for what they do, and they will be safe and secure in the high dwellings [in Paradise].
38. And those who do their best to turn people away from Our Signs will be brought to punishment.
39. Say, [O Muhammad], “Verily, my Lord enlarges provision to whomever He wills and restricts [it to whomever He wills]. And whatever you spend [in charity], He will make it up [for you], and He is the Best Provider.”
40. And [remember] the Day when He [i.e., Allah] gathers them all and says to angels, “Did these [polytheists] worship you?”
41. They [i.e., the angels] will say, “Glory is to You! You are our only Protector. They used to worship the jinn, in whom most of them used to believe.”
42. Today [i.e., the Day of Judgment] none of you can cause a benefit or harm to one another, and We shall say to wrong-doers, “Taste the Fire torture which you used to deny.”
43. And when Our Verses [of The Quran] are recited to them, they say, “This man [i.e., Muhammad] only wants to turn you away from what your fathers used to worship.” And they say, “This [i.e., The Quran] is only a fabricated lie.” And disbelievers say about the truth when it has come to them, “This is nothing but clear magic.”
44. And We [i.e., Allah] had not given them [i.e., the Arabs before Islam] Scriptures to understand, and We had not sent them a Warner [i.e., Messenger] before you [i.e., Muhammad].
45. And those [nations] before them belied [their Messengers], and these [Arab pagans] have not got one tenth of [the power] which We had given to those; yet, they belied My Messengers. Then My punishment was so terrible.
46. Say, [O Muhammad, to disbelievers], “I give you only one piece of advice: Stand up sincerely to Allah in pairs or singly and think [honestly]. Your companion [i.e., Muhammad] has no madness [at all]. He is only a Warner to you against a severe punishment [from Allah].”
47. Say, “I have not asked for a wage from you [for my mission]. My reward is only from Allah, and He is the Witness over all things.”
48. Say, “Truly, my Lord sends down the truth [against falsity]. He is the All-Knower of the Unseen.”
49. Say, [O Muhammad], “The truth [i.e., The Quran] has come, and falsity has no place or role.”
50. Say, “If I go astray, it will be against myself. And if I am guided, it is due to what my Lord reveals to me. He is All-Hearing, Ever-Near.”
51. And if only you could see when they [i.e., disbelievers] will be terrified [on the Day of Resurrection] with no chance of escape, and they will be seized from a near place [i.e., once they get out of their graves].
52. And they [i.e., disbelievers] will say, “Now we believe in it [i.e., the Day of Resurrection].” But how can their belief be accepted from them now?
53. They had already disbelieved in it [i.e., Islam], and they used to falsely guess about the Unseen [i.e., Hell, Paradise, the Day of Resurrection].
54. And there will be a barrier between them [i.e., disbelievers] and what they wish for [i.e., repentance in the Hereafter], as was done to people before [who wanted to repent upon suffering torture, but their repentance was not accepted]. Verily, they were in great doubt [about Allah in this worldly life].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Praise is due to Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who made angels messengers [between Him and Prophets] with two, three, or four wings. And He increases in creation whatever He wills. Truly, Allah is Able to do everything.
2. Whatever of mercy Allah grants to people, no one can prevent. And whatever He prevents, no one can grant. And He is the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.
3. O people! Remember the Grace of Allah on you. Is there a creator other than Allah, Who provides for you from the sky and the earth? There is no god but Him. How then do you turn away [from Him]?
4. And if they belie you, [O Muhammad], [many] messengers before you were belied as well. And to Allah all matters will be returned [for judgment].
5. O people! The Promise of Allah is certainly true, so do not be deceived by this worldly life, nor should you be deceived about Allah by Satan.
6. Satan is indeed your enemy, so take him as an enemy. He only calls his followers to dwell in the Blazing Fire.
7. Those who disbelieve will have a severe punishment, and those who believe and do good deeds will have forgiveness and a great reward [i.e., Paradise].
8. Is he whose evil deeds are made fair-seeming to him [equal to a good-doing believer]? Allah certainly sends astray whoever wills [to be astray], and He guides whoever wills [to be guided]. Thus, [O Muhammad], do not be filled with grief over their disbelief. Allah does know what they do.
9. And Allah is He Who sends winds carrying clouds, which We drive to a dead land and with which We give life to the earth after its death. As such Resurrection will be.
10. Whoever seeks honor [in this life and the Hereafter], all honor belongs to Allah. To Him good words and good deeds ascend. And those who plot evil will have a great punishment, and their plotting will be a complete failure.
11. And Allah created you from dust, [referring to Adam’s creation], and then from male and female discharge, [referring to Adam’s offspring], and then He made you pairs [i.e., males and females]. And no female conceives or gives birth except with His Knowledge. And no aged man is increased or decreased in age except in the [Recorded] Book. That is certainly easy for Allah.
12. And the two kinds of water are not the same: this is fresh, sweet, and pleasant to drink [i.e., rivers], and this is salt and bitter [i.e., seas]. And from them both you eat tender meat and bring out ornaments to wear. And you see ships sailing across the sea so that you may seek of His Bounty [through trading] and so that you may thank [Allah].
13. He merges the night into the day [i.e., lengthens the day], and He merges the day into the night [i.e., lengthens the night]. And He has subjected the sun and the moon [for man’s interest], each of which runs [in its orbit] to an appointed time. Such is Allah, your Lord. To Him belongs the dominion, and those whom you invoke besides Him possess nothing.
14. If you invoke them [i.e., the so-called partners with Allah], they do not hear your invocation. And if they hear, they cannot grant you what you request. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will deny your worshipping them. And no one can inform you [i.e., Muhammad] [of the truth] like the All-Knower [i.e., Allah].
15. O people! You are the ones in need of Allah, and Allah is Rich, Praise-Worthy.
16. If He wills, He can destroy you and bring about new generations [to replace you].
17. And this is not difficult for Allah.
18. And no person will bear the sins of another [on the Day of Resurrection]. And if one heavily burdened with sins calls for help, no one will carry anything of his burden even though he is a relative. You [i.e., Muhammad] only warn those who fear their Lord unseen and perform prayer. And whoever purifies himself does so for himself. And to Allah is the Return.
19. And the blind [i.e., disbelievers] cannot be equal to those who see [i.e., believers],
20. And nor can darkness [i.e., disbelief] be equal to light [i.e., belief], 21. And nor can the shade be equal to heat.
22. And the living and the dead cannot be alike. Allah, verily, makes hear whomever He wills. And you [i.e., Muhammad] cannot make hear those in graves.
23. You [i.e., Muhammad] are only a Warner.
24. We have sent you with the truth as a bearer of glad news and as a Warner. And there was no nation but a Warner was sent to it.
25. And if they belie you, [O Muhammad], those before them did belie [their Messengers] [although] their Messengers came to them with Clear Signs, with the Scripture, and with the Book giving light.
26. Then I punished those who disbelieved. And how terrible My punishment was!
27. Do you not see that Allah sends down from the sky water, with which We produce fruits of different colors? And among mountains there are roads white, red, black, and of various colors.
28. Similarly, there are various colors of people, animals, and cattle. Only men of knowledge are those who fear Allah. Truly, Allah is All-Exalted, Oft-Forgiving.
29. Verily, those who recite the book of Allah [i.e., The Quran], perform prayer, and spend [in charity] of what We have provided for them, secretly and openly, seek a trade that never fails
30. So that Allah will pay them their wages in full and grant them even more of His Grace. He is certainly Oft-Forgiving, Grateful.
31. And what We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], of the Book [i.e., The Quran] is the truth, confirming what was revealed before. Truly, Allah is All-Aware, All-Seeing of all people.
32. Then We [i.e., Allah] gave the Book [i.e., The Quran] to those whom We have chosen of mankind [i.e., the nation of Muhammad]. Some of them wrong themselves, and some follow the middle course, and some are the best in good deeds with Allah’s Permission. That is indeed the great Grace [of Allah].
33. They will enter the Paradise of Eternity, where they will be adorned with gold bracelets and pearls, and their garments will be of silk.
34. And they will say, “Praise is due to Allah, Who has removed grief away from us. Truly, our Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Grateful,”
35. “Who has caused us to dwell at [this] eternal home [i.e., Paradise], by His Grace, where no tiredness may touch us.”
36. As for those who disbelieve [in Allah], the Hell Fire will be theirs. They will neither be destroyed and die, nor will its torment be lightened for them. Such is the recompense of every disbeliever.
37. They [i.e., disbelievers] will cry in it [i.e., Hell], “O our Lord! Bring us out [from here], and we shall do good deeds, different from what we did.” [Allah will reply,] “Did we not let you live long enough to receive [Our Signs]? Did a Messenger not come to you? So taste [Our punishment], and wrong-doers have no helpers.”
38. Verily, Allah is the Knower of the Unseen of the heavens and the earth, and He certainly knows what hearts conceal.
39. He is He Who has made you successors on the earth, generation after generation. Whoever disbelieves pays for his disbelief. The more disbelievers insist on their disbelief, the more their Lord hates them, and the more their loss will be.
40. Say, [O Muhammad], “What is about your [so-called] partners that you invoke instead of Allah? Show me what they have created of the earth. Or have they a share in the heavens? Or have We given them a Book with Clear Signs for them to act accordingly?” No, it is only that wrong-doers promise one another nothing but delusions.
41. Truly, Allah keeps the heavens and the earth in their positions. And if they move away from their places, no one can control them after Him. He is certainly Most Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving.
42. And they [i.e. Arab pagans] swore by Allah that if a warner [i.e. a Messenger] came to them, they would be the most-guided nation. But when a Warner [i.e., Muhammad] did come, they went into more and more of disbelief,
43. Out of arrogance in the land and out of evil plotting. And evil plots do not hurt except those who plan them. Can they [i.e., disbelievers] expect anything but what happened to peoples before them? You cannot find a change in the Laws of Allah [i.e., how He deals with good-doers and evil-doers].
44. Have they [i.e., disbelievers] not traveled in the land to see what was the end of those before them, who were even more powerful than they? And nothing in the heavens or the earth can escape Allah. Verily, He is All-Knowing, Almighty.
45. And if Allah were to punish people for what they earn, He would destroy all living creatures on the earth. But He delays them to an appointed term. And when this term comes, Allah is certainly the All-Seer of His servants [i.e., all people].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Ya-Seen. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. By The Quran, which is full of wisdom,
3. Truly, you, [O Muhammad], are one of the Messengers, 4. On the Straight Path.
5. [This Quran] is sent down by the All-Exalted, the Most Merciful,
6. In order that you warn a people whose forefathers were not warned before, so they are heedless.
7. The Word of punishment is to come against most of them, for they do not believe.
8. We have put chains around their [i.e., disbelievers’] necks reaching their chins, causing their heads to be raised up.
9. And We [i.e., Allah] have placed a barrier before them [i.e., disbelievers] and a barrier behind them [i.e., between them and Islam], and We have covered up their insight, so they do not see [the truth].
10. And whether you, [O Muhammad], warn them or not, they are not going to believe.
11. You can only warn those who follow The Quran and fear the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah] unseen. To such people, bear the glad news of forgiveness and a generous reward [i.e., Paradise].
12. Truly, We give life to the dead, and We record their deeds and the effects of their deeds, and We record everything in a Clear Book [i.e., the Recorded Book].
13. And set to them, as an example, the dwellers of the town, when the Messengers came to it.
14. [Remember] when We sent to them two Messengers, but they belied them both. So We sent a third Messenger to them, and they [i.e., the three] said, “We are indeed sent to you as Messengers.”
15. They [i.e., disbelievers] said, “You are only humans like us, and the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah] has sent down nothing. You are only telling lies.”
16. They [i.e., the Messengers] replied, “Our Lord knows that we are Messengers sent to you.”
17. “Our duty is only to convey the Message clearly [to you].”
18. They [i.e., disbelievers] said, “For us, you are an evil omen. If you do not cease, we shall certainly stone you and cause a painful punishment from us to touch you.”
19. They [i.e., the Messengers] said, “Your evil omen [i.e., evil deeds] is with you. Do you threaten us merely because we preach you? You are really a transgressing [i.e., disobedient] people.”
20. And a man [named Habeeb] came running from the farthest point of the town and said, “O my people! Follow the Messengers.”
21. “Follow those who ask you for no wage and who are truly guided.”
22. “Why should I not worship Him Who has created me and to Whom you will be returned?”
23. “Shall I take besides Him gods? If the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah] intends to hurt me, their intercession will be of no benefit to me, nor can they save me.”
24. “Then, indeed, I would be in a great error.”
25. “I do believe in your Lord, so,[O Messengers], listen to me.”
26. It was said [to him], “Enter Paradise.” He said, “I wish that my people knew,”
27. “That my Lord has forgiven me and has made me one of those honored.”
28. And We did not send down against his [i.e., Habeeb’s] people [after they had killed him for his belief] any host [of angels to destroy them], and We did not need to do that.
29. It was only one Cry, and all of them were destroyed.
30. Alas for mankind! Whenever a Messenger came to them, they used to mock at him.
31. Have they not seen that We have destroyed many generations before them and that they do not return to them?
32. And all [humans] will be brought before us [for accountability on the Day of Resurrection].
33. And the dead land is a Sign for them: We give it life again, and We bring out of it grains, of which they eat.
34. And We have made in it gardens of date-palms and grapes, and We have caused water springs to gush out in it
35. So that they may eat of its fruit, with no effort made by them. Will they then not thank [Allah]?
36. Glory is to Him, Who has created all the pairs of what the earth produces and of themselves [i.e., males and females] and of what they do not know.
37. And there is a Sign for them in the night: We take the day from it, and they are in utter darkness.
38. And the sun runs in a fixed course. That is the Decree of the All-Exalted, the All-Knowing.
39. And We have decreed successive stages for the moon until it returns [at the end of the lunar month] like an old curved date stalk.
40. Neither is the sun to overtake the moon, nor is the night to overtake the day. And each [orb] runs in its [fixed] orbit.
41. And it is a Sign for them [i.e., mankind] that We carried their offspring in the full-laden ship [of Noah].
42. And We have created of the like what they ride on [i.e., other ships].
43. And if We will, We can drown them, and no one can help them, nor are they saved,
44. Unless they receive a mercy from Us and an enjoyment for a short time.
45. And if it is said to them [i.e., disbelievers], “Beware of what is before you [i.e., sins] and what is behind you [i.e., the punishment of the Hereafter] so that you may receive Mercy,” [they turn away].
46. And never does a Sign from among their Lord’s Signs come to them but they turn away from it.
47. And if it is said to them [i.e., disbelievers], “Spend [in charity] of what Allah has provided for you,” those who disbelieve say to those who believe, “Are we to feed him whom Allah can feed, if He wills?” You are indeed in a plain error.
48. And they [i.e., disbelievers] say [to believers], “When will this promise [i.e., Resurrection] be, if you are truthful?”
49. They do not wait for but one Cry, which will seize them while still disputing [about faith].
50. Then they will not be able to make bequest, nor can they return to their family [after the Cry of Destruction, when all living humans are made to die].
51. And the Trumpet will be blown, and from graves all will be resurrected and come quickly to their Lord.
52. They will say, “Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our graves?” [It will be said to them], “This is what the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah] has promised, and the Messengers told the truth.”
53. It will be only one Cry, and all will be brought before Us.
54. This Day [i.e., the Day of Judgment] no one will be wronged in the least. And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do.
55. This Day the dwellers of Paradise will certainly be rejoicing in delight.
56. They and their wives will be in shades, reclining on comfortable sofas.
57. There [i.e., in Paradise] they will have [all kinds of] fruits and all that they desire.
58. [It will be said to them], “Peace,” a greeting from the Lord, the Most Merciful.
59. [Allah will say to sinners,] “This Day get apart [from believers], you criminals.”
60. Did I not order you, O sons of Adam, not to worship Satan, for he is a plain enemy to you,
61. And to worship Me [only]? That is the Straight Path.
62. And he [i.e., Satan] could send astray many people. Did you not then understand?
63. This is Hell, which you were promised.
64. Taste it this Day for what you used to deny.
65. This Day We shall seal up their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their legs will witness to what they used to earn.
66. And had We willed, We would have made them blind, unable to see the Path. How would they then see [the truth]?
67. And had We willed, We could have made them lifeless in their places, unable to go forward or to turn back.
68. And whomever We grant a long life, We make him weaker and weaker. Do they not understand?
69. And We [i.e., Allah] have not taught him [i.e., Muhammad] poetry, nor does he need it. This [Revelation] is only a Reminder and a clear Quran
70. So as to warn those with living hearts and so that punishment is justified against disbelievers.
71. Do they [i.e., people] not see that We [i.e., Allah] have created for them cattle made by Our Hands, which they possess?
72. And We subjected them [i.e., cattle] to them [i.e., people], and some of them they ride and of them they eat.
73. And they have [other] benefits from them [i.e., cattle] and drinks as well [i.e., milk]. Do they not then be grateful [to Allah]?
74. And they [i.e., polytheists] have taken gods besides Allah so that they may be supported.
75. They [i.e., the so-called gods] cannot support them and will be brought [on the Day of Judgment] to witness against them [i.e., their worshippers].
76. So let not what they [i.e., disbelievers] say grieve you, [O Muhammad]. We surely know what they conceal and what they reveal.
77. Does man not see that We have created him from a semen drop? Yet, he stands as an open opponent [to his Creator].
78. And he [i.e., a disbeliever] makes an argument against Us, forgetting that he himself was created. He said, “Who gives life to these bones after they become mere dust?”
79. Say, [O Muhammad], “The One Who gives life to them [again] is the One Who created them for the first time. And He is the All-Knower of all creatures.”
80. He is He Who makes fire for you from green trees, with which you kindle.
81. Is the One Who created the heavens and the earth unable to create the like of them [i.e., humans]? Yes, of course. He is the Supreme Creator, the All-Knower.
82. His Command, if He wills a thing, is to say to it, “Be,” and it is.
83. So Glory is to Him, in Whose Hands the dominion of all things is, and to Him you will be returned.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. By those angels who line up in ranks,
2. By those angels who drive clouds ahead,
3. By those angels who convey The Quran [from Allah to people],
4. Verily, your God is One,
5. The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them and the Lord of the [different] points of sunrise.
6. We have indeed adorned the lowest heaven with the beauty of stars,
7. So as to guard against every rebellious devil,
8. In order that they [i.e., devils] cannot listen to angels in the higher heavens. And if they do so, they are stoned from all sides,
9. To be driven away, and they will have a painful torment [in the Hereafter],
10. Except one [i.e., a devil] who may snatch a word [from the heaven], and, thus, he is pursued by a burning flame.
11. So ask them [i.e., disbelievers], [O Muhammad], “Which is stronger in creation: they or others which We have created?” Truly, We created them from sticky clay.
12. You [i.e., Muhammad] wonder at their denial [of Resurrection], while they mock [at The Quran].
13. And if they [i.e., disbelievers] are reminded [of Allah], they do not remember.
14. And if they see a Sign [from Allah], they mock at it,
15. And they say, “This is nothing but clear magic.”
16. “If we die and become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected?”
17. “And will our forefathers be resurrected too?”
18. Say, [O Muhammad], “Yes, with you all humiliated.”
19. It will be only one Cry, and you will be out of your graves, staring.
20. And they will say, “Woe to us!This is the Day of Judgment.”
21. [It will be said to them,] “This is the Day of Judgment, which you used to deny.”
22. [It will be said to angels,] “Gather together wrong-doers with their companions and what they used to worship,”
23. “Instead of Allah, and guide them [all] to the way to Hell.”
24. “And stop them, for they are to be questioned [about their deeds].”
25. Why are you [i.e., disbelievers] not supported?
26. No, they are this Day in complete surrender.
27. And they [i.e., disbelievers and sinners] will question and blame one another.
28. They [i.e., disbelieving followers] will say [to their leaders], “It was you who tempted us [to disobey Allah].”
29. They will reply, “No, you were not [true] believers.”
30. “And we had no authority over you; you were disobedient people.”
31. “So now the Word of our Lord is justified against us, and we will certainly taste [punishment].”
32. “We led you astray, for we were astray.”
33. So they all will share torture [in the Fire].
34. Such is what We do to criminals.
35. When they were told that there is no god but Allah, they rejected it with arrogance.
36. And they said, “Are we going to abandon our gods to follow a mad poet?”
37. He [i.e., Muhammad] has come with the truth, and he has confirmed [previous] Messengers.
38. Verily, you [i.e., disbelievers] will taste the painful punishment.
39. And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do.
40. As for the sincere worshippers of Allah,
41. They will have a known provision [in Paradise],
42. And fruits, and they will be honored,
43. In the Gardens of Delight [i.e., Paradise],
44. Facing one another on thrones,
45. Served with cups of pure wine from a running river,
46. White, delicious to drinkers,
47. Causing no pain or intoxication,
48. Accompanied by chaste wives, restraining their glances, with wide and beautiful eyes,
49. Looking like preserved pearls.
50. And they [i.e., Paradise dwellers] will ask questions to one another.
51. One of them will say, “I had a disbelieving companion [in the first life],”
52. “Who used to say [to me], ‘Are you one of those who believe [in Resurrection]?’
53. ‘If we die and become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected and held accountable [for our deeds]?’ ”
54. [The dweller in Paradise] will say, “Do you see Hell down there?”
55. So he looked down and saw him [i.e., his wicked companion] in the middle of Hell.
56. He will say [to his companion], “By Allah! You were about to ruin me,”
57. “And had it not been for my Lord’s Mercy, I would have been brought [to Hell, with you].”
58. [The dwellers of Paradise will say,] “Are we not to die again?”
59. “It is only our first death. And we shall not be punished.”
60. This is the great success, indeed.
61. For something like this let workers work.
62. Which is better as an entertainment: that [in Paradise] or the tree of Zaqqum [i.e., a terrible tree in Hell]?
63. We have truly made it [i.e., that tree] a punishment for wrong-doers.
64. It is, indeed, a tree which grows at the very bottom of Hell;
65. Its fruits are like the heads of devils.
66. They will certainly eat of it and fill up their bellies.
67. Then, in addition to that, they will drink boiling water.
68. Then, their return is to Hell.
69. They did find their fathers astray;
70. Yet, they hastened on their footsteps.
71. And most people before them went astray,
72. And We sent Warners [i.e., Messengers] to them.
73. Then see what was the end of those who had been warned,
74. With the exception of the sincere worshippers of Allah.
75. And Noah invoked Us, and We are the Best of those who answer.
76. And We saved him and his family from the great distress [i.e., drowning];
77. And We made his offspring the only survivors,
78. And We left [a good remembrance] for him among people to come.
79. Peace be upon Noah all over the worlds.
80. Thus is Our reward to good-doers, indeed.
81. Verily, he is one of Our believing servants.
82. And then We did drown the others.
83. And certainly, among those who followed his [i.e., Noah’s] way is Abraham,
84. Who came to his Lord with a pure heart [i.e., free of polytheism].
85. He said to his father and his people, “What do you worship?”
86. “Do you want false gods instead of Allah?”
87. “What do you think that the Lord of the worlds will do to you?”
88. So he had a look at the stars,
89. And he said, “Verily, I am sick,” [pretending so in order to stay behind his people].
90. So they turned away from him, leaving him behind.
91. Then he went to their gods and said, “Why do you not eat [of the offerings before you]?”
92. “Why do you not speak?”
93. So he began to destroy them [i.e., the idols] with his right hand.
94. Then they [i.e., the idolaters] came to him quickly.
95. He said [to them], “Do you worship what you carve,”
96. “While Allah has created you and what you make?”
97. They said, “Build for him a building [like a furnace] and throw him into the blazing fire.”
98. They made a plot against him, but We made them the lowest.
99. And he said [after Allah had saved him from the fire], “I am going to my Lord, and He will guide me.”
100. “O my Lord! Grant me righteous offspring.”
101. So We gave him [i.e., Abraham] the glad news of a forbearing son [i.e., Ishmael].
102. When he [i.e., Ishmael] was old enough to walk with him [i.e., his father, Abraham], he said, “O my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you [in sacrifice to Allah]. So see what you have to do.” He [i.e., Ishmael] said, “O my father! Do what you are commanded [by Allah] to do. You will find me, if Allah wills, among those who are patient.”
103. When they both submitted [to the Command of Allah], and he [i.e., Abraham] turned his [i.e., Ishmael’s] forehead down on the ground [preparing his son for slaughtering],
104. We [i.e., Allah] called out to him, “O Abraham!”
105. “You have fulfilled the dream.” Thus We certainly reward good-doers.
106. This has been a clear test, indeed, [i.e., for Abraham to obey Allah’s Command to slaughter his only son and for Ishmael to obey his father].
107. And We ransomed him [i.e., Ishmael] with a great sacrifice [i.e., a ram].
108. And We left for him [i.e., Abraham] a good remembrance among later generations.
109. Peace be upon Abraham.
110. Thus We reward good-doers.
111. He is one of Our believing worshippers.
112. And We [then] gave him the glad news of Isaac, a Prophet from the righteous.
113. And We blessed him [i.e., Abraham] and Isaac. And of their offspring, some are good-doers, and some are plain wrong-doers.
114. And We gave Our Grace to Moses and Aaron [i.e., Prophethood].
115. And We saved them both and their people from the great distress [caused by Pharaoh].
116. And We supported them, and thus they became victorious [over Pharaoh].
117. And We gave them both the clear Scripture [i.e., The Torah].
118. And We guided them both to the Right Path.
119. And We left for them [a good remembrance] among people to come.
120. Peace be upon Moses and Aaron.
121. Thus We reward good-doers.
122. They both were of Our believing servants, indeed.
123. Verily, Elias was one of the Messengers.
124. He said to his people, “Will you fear [Allah]?”
125. “Do you worship Ba’l [i.e., an idol] and leave the Best of creators,”
126. “Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?”
127. But they belied him, and thus they will be certainly brought [to punishment],
128. Except the sincere worshippers of Allah.
129. And We left for him [a good remembrance] among people to come.
130. Peace be upon Elias.
131. Thus We reward good-doers.
132. He was, indeed, one of Our believing servants.
133. Verily, Lot is one of the Messengers.
134. We saved him and all his family,
135. Except an old woman [i.e., his wife], who remained behind.
136. Then We destroyed the others.
137. And, truly, you pass by them in the morning,
138. And in the night. Do you not think [of their end]?
139. And Jonah is one of the Messengers.
140. He ran to the full-laden ship,
141. And he [agreed to] cast lots [about who to leave the troubled ship], and he was a loser, [and he threw himself in the sea].
142. Then a whale swallowed him, and he was to blame.
143. Had he not been one of those who glorify Allah,
144. He would have remained in its belly until the Day of Resurrection.
145. But We made the whale cast him on a plantless shore while he was so weak,
146. And We caused a gourd plant to grow over him.
147. And We sent him [as a Messenger] to a hundred thousand people or more,
148. And they believed [in Allah], and We gave them enjoyment for a while [i.e., until death].
149. Now ask them, [O Muhammad], whether daughters are for your Lord and sons for them,
150. Or We created angels as females with them as witnesses [as pagans falsely claim].
151. Verily, because of their falsehood, they say,
152. “Allah has begotten [angels as His daughters].” And they are liars, indeed.
153. Has He then chosen daughters rather than sons?
154. What is the matter with you? How do you think?
155. Do you not remember?
156. Or do you have a clear proof [of what you claim]?
157. Bring [your proof from] a [divine] Book, if you are truthful.
158. And they [i.e., disbelievers] invented a kinship between Him and the jinn, and the jinn know that they [i.e., the liars] will be brought [to punishment in the Hereafter].
159. Glory is to Allah above what they [falsely] attribute [to Him],
160. Except the sincere worshippers of Allah.
161. You [i.e., disbelievers] and what you worship
162. Cannot lead astray anyone,
163. Except those decreed to be in Hell.
164. And each one of us [i.e., angels] has a known position.
165. And we [i.e., angels or Muslims] do stand in rows [for prayer].
166. And we [i.e., angels or Muslims] do glorify [Allah].
167. And they [i.e., Arab pagans before Islam] used to say,
168. “If we had had a reminder as those before us,
169. We would have been sincere worshippers of Allah.”
170. [And when The Quran has come to them], they have disbelieved in it, so they will come to know.
171. And Our Word has already gone to Our obedient Messengers,
172. That they are surely victorious,
173. And that Our hosts [i.e., believers] are the winners.
174. So turn away from them [i.e., disbelievers] for a while.
175. And watch, [O Muhammad], and they will see [their own punishment].
176. Do they hasten Our punishment?
177. When it [i.e., the punishment] hits them, the morning of those who were warned will be a terrible morning.
178. And turn away, [O Muhammad], from them for a while.
179. And watch, and they will see [their own torment].
180. Glory is to your Lord, the Lord of Honor, above what they attribute [to Him].
181. And peace be upon the Messengers.
182. And praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Sad. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.] By The Quran, the great Reminder,
2. Those who disbelieve are in arrogance and dispute.
3. How many a generation We have destroyed before! They cried for help [when Allah’s torment hit them], but there was no escape at all.
4. And they [i.e., Arab pagans] wonder that a Warner [i.e., a Messenger] from among themselves came to them, and the disbelievers say, “This [man] is a lying magician.”
5. “Has he [i.e., Muhammad] made [all] gods into One God? This is really something strange.”
6. And the leaders among them [i.e., disbelievers] went about [saying], “Go ahead [with your religion], and keep on worshipping your gods. It is verily a plot against you.”
7. “We have not heard of this in the last religion [i.e., Christianity]. This is nothing but a fabrication.”
8. “Has the Reminder [i.e., The Quran] been sent down to him [alone] from among [all of] us?” They are in doubt of My Reminder [i.e., The Quran]; they have not tasted My torment yet.
9. Or do they have the treasures of your Lord’s Mercy, the All-Exalted, the Real Bestower?
10. Or do they have the dominion of the heavens and the earth and what is between them? If so, let them climb up through the ways [of the heavens].
11. They will be defeated like those [disbelievers] before them.
12. Before them, Noah’s people, ’Ad, and Pharaoh, the man with stakes [, with which he used to punish people], belied [Messengers].
13. [And so did] Thamud, the people of Lot, and the dwellers of the Wood, who were stronger than you.
14. All of them did belie the Messengers, so they did deserve punishment.
15. And these wait for only one Cry, which causes them to die.
16. They say, “O our Lord!Hasten to us our record of deeds [good and bad] before the Day of Reckoning.”
17. Be patient, [O Muhammad], with what they [i.e., disbelievers] say, and remember Our servant David, of granted power. He is verily oft-returning [to Allah].
18. We [i.e., Allah] subjected mountains to glorify [Allah] with him in the evening and the morning.
19. And [We subjected] birds gathered together obeying him too.
20. And We strengthened his kingdom, and We gave him wisdom [i.e., Prophethood] and [the talent of] decisive speech.
21. Has the news come to you of two opponents who climbed over the wall into the private room [of David]?
22. When they both entered [his room], he was terrified of them. They said to him, “Do not be afraid. We are two men, one of whom has wronged the other. Thus, judge between us in justice, and do not go to injustice, and guide us to the Straight Way.”
23. “This is my brother [in religion]. He has ninety-nine sheep [i.e., ewes], and I have one ewe. And he said, ‘Give it [i.e., the ewe] to me,’ and he overpowered me in speech.”
24. He [i.e., David] said [immediately without listening to the other opponent], “He has wronged you by demanding your ewe to be added to his ewes. And many people, in fact, do wrong one another, except those who believe and do good deeds, and they are a few.” And David thought that We have tested him, so he asked his Lord to forgive him, and he fell down in prostration and turned [to Him in repentance].
25. So We forgave him that, and he is very close to Us, and he will surely have a good return [i.e., Paradise].
26. O David! We [i.e., Allah] have made you a ruler in the land, so judge between people in justice. And do not follow your desire, lest it should mislead you away from the Path of Allah. Verily, those who go astray from the Path of Allah will have a severe torment, for they forgot the Day of Reckoning.
27. And We did not create the heaven and the earth and what is between them in vain [i.e., without a purpose]. That is what disbelievers think. Woe to those who disbelieve from the Fire!
28. Shall We treat those who believe and do good deeds like mischief-doers in the land? Or shall We treat the pious like evil-doers?
29. [This is] a blessed Book [i.e., The Quran] which We have sent down to you, [O Muhammad], so that they may study its Verses and so that men of understanding may remember.
30. And We granted Solomon [a son and Prophet] to David. How excellent he [i.e., Solomon] is as a worshipper! And he is an oft-returner [in repentance to Allah].
31. When the high-bred horses were displayed before him [i.e., Solomon] in the afternoon, [causing him to forget a prayer],
32. He said, “My love of these horses has made me forget prayer, and the sun has [now] hidden in the veil [of darkness],” [blaming himself for not praying on time].
33. Then he said, “Return the horses to me.” And he began to pass his hand over their legs and necks [out of endearment before he ordered his servants to kill them in anger for Allah].
34. And We tested Solomon, and We placed in his throne a devil, then he [i.e., Solomon] repented [to Allah].
35. He said, “O my Lord!Forgive me and grant me a kingdom which will not be granted to anyone after me. You are certainly the Bestower.”
36. So We subjected the wind to him blowing gently at his command wherever he wished.
37. And [We subjected to him] the devils [of jinn] as builders and divers, 38. And others [of devils] chained in fetters [because of their rebellion].
39. [Allah said to Solomon], “This is Our Grant to you, so you can grant [others] or withhold [as you wish] without being accountable.”
40. Verily, he [i.e., Solomon] is very close to Us, and he will have a good return [i.e., Paradise].
41. And remember Our servant Job, when he invoked his Lord [saying], “Satan has, indeed, touched me with distress [i.e., by illness] and torment [i.e., by losing wealth and offspring].”
42. [Allah said to him,] “Strike the ground with your foot. This is [a spring of] cool water to bathe in and to drink from.” [And immediately he restored his health by the Grace of Allah.]
43. And We granted him [i.e., Job] his family again and the like of them as a Mercy from Us and a reminder for those who understand. [Allah gave life to Job’s dead sons and daughters and granted him, in addition, a similar number of children.]
44. [Allah said to Job,] “Take a bundle of [one hundred] thin stalks of grass and strike [your wife] with it so as not to break your oath [, for he, while sick, swore to stripe her one hundred times as a punishment].” We have found him [i.e., Job] really patient. How excellent a servant he is! He is, indeed, an oft-returner [to Allah in repentance].
45. And remember, [O Muhammad], Our servants: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, men [and Prophets] strong [in their worship] and of religious understanding.
46. We [i.e., Allah] gave them a special advantage: [mainly] remembering the Hereafter.
47. And they are, to Us, of the righteous and chosen men, indeed.
48. And remember, [O Muhammad], Ishmael, Elisha, and Isaiah; all are [Prophets] among the righteous.
49. This [Quran] is a Reminder. And the pious will have a good return [in the Hereafter],
50. Eternal Paradise, with [all] doors opened for them,
51. Reclining there, calling for [all kinds of] fruits and drinks,
52. Having beside them chaste wives, not looking at anyone except their husbands, [and] of equal ages.
53. This is what you are promised for the Day of Reckoning.
54. [It will be said to Paradise-dwellers,] “Verily, this is Our provision, which will never come to an end.”
55. This [is for the pious]. As for transgressors, they will certainly have the worst return,
56. Hell, where they will be punished. And what a terrible abode it is!
57. Taste this boiling liquid and this very cold one,
58. And many other types of torture.
59. [A group in the Fire will say about another group,] “This is a [new] group entering [Hell] with you. No welcome for them. They will taste the Fire.”
60. They will reply, “No, you. No welcome for you. You misled us [in the worldly life], and it is a terrible abode [here, indeed].”
61. They will say, “O our Lord! Whoever misled the other, double his punishment in the Fire.”
62. And they will say, “Why do we not see [in Hell] men whom we used to count as evil-doers?”
63. “Did we mock at them, or can we not see them [here in Hell]?”, [for disbelievers falsely think that believers will be with them in Hell].
64. Verily, the people of the Fire will keep on disputing.
65. Say, [O Muhammad], “I am only a Warner [i.e., Messenger], and there is no god but Allah, the One, the Conqueror,”
66. “The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, the All-Exalted, the Oft-Forgiving.”
67. Say, [O Muhammad to disbelievers], “It [i.e., The Quran] is great news,”
68. “From which you turn away.”
69. “I [by myself] knew nothing about angels disputing [about the creation of Adam].”
70. “This has been revealed to me. I am only a plain Warner.”
71. Remember when your Lord said to angels, “I am going to create man from clay.”
72. “When I have shaped him and breathed life into him, fall down in prostration to him.”
73. So all the angels prostrated themselves [to Adam].
74. As for Satan, he was arrogant and one of the disbelievers [i.e., he refused to prostrate himself to Adam].
75. Allah said, “O Satan! What has prevented you from prostrating to one whom I have created with both of My Hands? Are you too proud or too high?”
76. Satan said, “I am better than he. You created me from fire, and You created him from clay.”
77. Allah said [to Satan], “Get out from here! You are outcast, indeed.”
78. “And, verily, My Curse is on you until the Day of Recompense.”
79. Satan said, “O my Lord! Give me respite until the Day when they [i.e., the dead] will be resurrected.”
80. Allah said, “You are one of those given respite,”
81. “Until the Day of the appointed time.”
82. Satan said, “By Your Honor and Power, I will certainly mislead them all,”
83. “Except your obedient worshippers.”
84. Allah said, “The truth is, and I say the truth,”
85. “[That] I will surely fill Hell with you [i.e., Satan] and all those who follow you.”
86. Say, [O Muhammad], “I do not ask a wage of you for it [i.e., The Quran], nor am I one of the fabricators.”
87. “It [i.e., The Quran] is only a Reminder for all the worlds [i.e., mankind and jinn].”
88. “And you will surely know the truth of it after a while [i.e., on the Day of Judgment].”
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. The revelation of the Book [i.e., The Quran] is from Allah, the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.
2. We, verily, have sent down the Book to you, [O Muhammad], in truth, so worship Allah [alone] in sincere submission to Him.
3. Sincere submission is due to Allah only. And those who take protectors instead of Him say, “We do not worship them [i.e., idols] but for making us closer to Allah.” Allah will certainly judge between them concerning what they [i.e., people] differ in. Verily, Allah does not guide disbelieving liars.
4. Had Allah willed to have a son, He would have chosen whomever He willed from those whom He created. Glory is to Him. He is Allah, the One, the Conqueror.
5. He has created the heavens and the earth in truth. He makes the night go in the day, and He makes the day go in the night [i.e., they follow each other]. And He has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [in its orbit] for an appointed time [i.e., the Day of Resurrection]. He is the All-Exalted, the Oft-Forgiving.
6. He created you [i.e., mankind] from one single person [i.e., Adam], and then He made from him his wife [i.e., Eve]. And He has created for you of cattle eight pairs [i.e., two of sheep, two of goats, two of camels, and two of cows: male and female]. He creates you in your mothers’ wombs: stage after stage in three membranes of darkness. That is Allah, your Lord. His is the dominion. How then are you turned away [from Him]?
7. If you [i.e., people] disbelieve, then, truly, Allah is not in need of you, and He does not like disbelief for people. And if you thank [Him by being believers], He does like it for you. And no one bears the sins of another. And then to your Lord is your return, when He will tell you of what you used to do. He knows best what your hearts conceal.
8. And when harm touches man, he invokes his Lord, repenting to him. But when He grants him a favor from Him, he forgets his previous invocation and takes partners with Allah so as to mislead others away from His [Straight] Path. Say, “Enjoy your disbelief for a while; you are surely one of the dwellers of the Fire.”
9. Is one who is obedient to Allah during the night, prostrating himself or standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for his Lord’s Mercy, [equal to the polytheist or the disbeliever]? Say, “Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” It is only those of understanding who remember.
10. Say, [O Muhammad], “O My servants who believe! Fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world, there is a reward [in this world and in the Hereafter]. And the earth of Allah is so wide [i.e., if you cannot worship Allah in a place, go to another]. Those who are patient will receive their wage in full, without reckoning.”
11. Say, [O Muhammad], “I am commanded to worship Allah only in sincere submission,”
12. “And I am commanded to be the first of Muslims [among my nation].”
13. Say, [O Muhammad], “Truly, I fear the torment of a great day [i.e., the Day of Judgment] if I disobey my Lord.”
14. Say, “I do worship Allah [only] in sincere and complete submission.”
15. So worship whatever you like besides Him. Say, [O Muhammad], “The losers are, indeed, those who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. That is the real loss.”
16. They will have coverings of fire above them and coverings [of fire] under them. With this, Allah frightens people: “O mankind, fear Me.”
17. And those who avoid false gods by not worshipping them and who return to Allah [in repentance] will receive the glad news. So give the glad news to My servants,
18. Who listen and obey. Those are the ones whom Allah has guided, and those are the people of understanding.
19. Is the one against whom the Word of punishment is justified [equal to the good-doer]? Will you, [O Muhammad], save him who is in the Fire?
20. But those who fear Allah will have rooms above which there are built rooms [in Paradise], under which rivers flow. This is the Promise of Allah, and Allah does not break His Promise.
21. Do you not see that Allah sends down from the sky water, and He causes it to come out from the earth as water-springs? Then He produces with it crops of different colors. Then they fade and turn yellow, and then He makes them dry and broken pieces. Verily, in this there is a reminder for people of understanding.
22. Is the one whose heart Allah has made recipient of Islam and thus he is in light from his Lord [equal to the non-Muslim]? So woe to those whose hearts do not soften upon hearing the Word of Allah! Those are in clear error.
23. Allah has sent down the Best Guidance, a Book [i.e., The Quran], the parts of which are similar to each other [in greatness and truth], with frequent repetition. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver [in fear, when they hear it]. Then their skins and hearts soften when they hear the Promise of Allah. That is the Guidance of Allah, with which He guides whoever wills [to be guided]. And whomever Allah sends astray, there is no guide for him.
24. Is the one whose face suffers the worst torment on the Day of Resurrection [equal to the one who is admitted to Paradise]? And it will be said to wrong-doers, “Taste what you used to earn.”
25. Those before them belied [Messengers], so torment came on them from where they did not know,
26. And Allah made them taste disgrace in this worldly life; and the torment of the Hereafter is certainly greater, if only they knew.
27. And We have set for people, in this Quran, of every example so that they may remember.
28. [We have sent down] an Arabic Quran, with no crookedness [in it] so that they may fear [Allah].
29. Allah sets a simile: a [slave] man belonging to many partners disputing with one another [i.e., polytheists who worship more than one god] and a [slave] man belonging to one man only [i.e., a monotheist, who worships Allah only]. Are these two equal?Praise is due to Allah, but most people do not know.
30. You, [O Muhammad], will certainly die, and they will die too.
31. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you and they will be disputing before your Lord.
32. Who does more wrong than one who invents lies against Allah and rejects the truth [i.e., The Quran] after it has come to him? Is Hell not the abode of disbelievers?
33. And he [i.e., Muhammad] who has conveyed the truth [i.e., The Quran] and those who have believed in it [i.e., Muslims] are the pious.
34. They will have whatever they desire with their Lord [in Paradise]. That is the reward of good-doers.
35. [This is as such] so that Allah will expiate from them the evil of what they did and reward them according to the best of what they used to do.
36. Is Allah not Sufficient for His servant [if he puts his trust in Him]? And they [i.e., polytheists] try to frighten you with those [partners] besides Him, [but in vain]. And whomever Allah sends astray, no one can guide him.
37. And whomever Allah guides, no one can mislead him. Is Allah not All-Exalted, the Possessor of Retribution?
38. And if you ask them [i.e., polytheists] who has created the heavens and the earth, they will surely say, “Allah.” Say, “What is about what you worship besides Allah? If Allah wills to harm me, can they [i.e., the so-called partners] remove His harm [away from me]? Or if Allah wills to give me a mercy, can they prevent His Mercy?” Say, “Allah is Sufficient for me. In Him believers put their trust.”
39. Say, [O Muhammad], “O my people! Act according to your way; I do act [according to my way]. And then you will know
40. To whom a disgracing torment will come and whom a permanent torment will befall [in the Hereafter].”
41. Truly, We have sent down to you [i.e., Muhammad] the Book [i.e., The Quran] for all mankind in truth. So whoever accepts guidance, he does so for himself; and whoever goes astray, he does so against himself. And you [i.e., Muhammad] are not a guardian over them [i.e., you are only a Warner].
42. Allah takes away souls at the moment of death and those [souls] that do not die during sleep. Then He keeps those [souls] for which He has ordained death, and He lets go the other souls [of sleeping people] until the appointed time [i.e., death]. In this there are Signs for people who think [deep].
43. Or have they [i.e., polytheists] taken other [partners] as intercessors besides Allah? Say, “[Do you do that] even if they [i.e., the so-called partners] have no power, nor do they understand?”
44. Say, [O Muhammad], “All intercession belongs to Allah. He has the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you will be returned [in the Hereafter].”
45. And if Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter are filled with denial and arrogance. But if those below Him are mentioned, they [i.e., polytheists] rejoice.
46. Say, [O Muhammad], “O Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the All-Knower of the Unseen and the Seen! You will judge [in the Hereafter] between people concerning what they used to differ in.”
47. And if wrong-doers had had all that is in the earth and as much too, they would have offered it to ransom themselves from the severe torment on the Day of Resurrection, when they will see from Allah what they have never thought of.
48. And the evils of what they earned will be clear to them, and what they used to mock at will encompass them.
49. When harm touches a person, he calls Us [to help him]. Then when We grant him a grace from Us, he says, “I have been granted that because I deserve it.” No, it is only a test, but most people do not know.
50. Those before them said the same, but what they earned [of wealth] was of no use for them.
51. So the evils of what they earned befell them. And the wrong-doers among these will suffer the evils of what they earned [too], and they can never escape [Allah’s punishment].
52. Do they not know that Allah gives a lot of provision to whomever He wills and straitens it [for whomever He wills]? In this there are Signs for people who believe.
53. Say, “O My servants who have committed many sins! Do not despair of the Mercy of Allah. Allah does forgive all sins [if one repents]. Truly, He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”
54. “And return to your Lord [in repentance] and submit to Him before the torment comes to you and then you get no support [on the Day of Resurrection].”
55. “And follow the best of what was sent down to you from your Lord [i.e., The Quran] before the torment comes on you suddenly without you perceiving it.”
56. A person [in Hell] will say, “Alas! I was so disobedient to Allah, and I used to mock at Islam.”
57. Or he [in Hell] will say, “If only Allah had guided me, I would have been among the pious [and in Paradise now].”
58. Or he, when he sees the torment [in Hell], will say, “If only I had another chance [to return to the worldly life], then I would be among good-doers.”
59. [Allah will say to him,] “But My Verses [of The Quran] did come to you; yet, you rejected them, and you were so arrogant, and you were one of the disbelievers.”
60. And on the Day of Resurrection, you will see those who invented lies against Allah with disgraced faces. Is there not in Hell an abode for the arrogant?
61. And Allah will save those who feared Him and will admit them into Paradise, where no harm will touch them, nor shall they grieve.
62. Allah is the Creator of everything, and He is the Guardian over all things.
63. He [i.e., Allah] is in control of the heavens and the earth, and those who disbelieve in the Signs of Allah are the real losers.
64. Say, [O Muhammad, to polytheists], “Do you want me to worship other than Allah, you ignorant people?”
65. And it has been revealed to you [i.e., Muhammad] and to those [Messengers] before you, “If you take partners with Allah, then all your deeds will surely be in vain, and you will be among the losers, indeed.”
66. Worship Allah [alone and only], and be among those who are grateful [to Allah].
67. And they [i.e., disbelievers and polytheists] have not given Allah His due estimate. And on the Day of Resurrection, all the earth will be in His grasp, and the heavens will be rolled up in His Right Hand. Glory is to Him, and He is High above what they attribute [to Him].
68. And the Trumpet will be blown [the second time], and all who are in the heavens and the earth, except him whom Allah excludes, will be caused to die. Then it will be blown [the third time], and they are resurrected looking [at the events of that Day].
69. And the earth will shine with the light of its Lord [on the Day of Resurrection]. And the Book [of deeds] will be opened. And the Prophets and the witnesses [i.e., the angels who were recording people’s deeds] will be brought [to testify]. And it will be judged between them [i.e., people] in justice, and they will never be wronged.
70. And each person will be paid in full for what he did [whether good or bad], and He knows best what they used to do.
71. And those who disbelieve will be led to Hell in groups. When they arrive at it, its gates are made open, and its guards [of angels] will say to them, “Did Messengers from among you not come to you, reciting to you the Verses of your Lord, warning you against this meeting Day?” They will answer, “Yes.” So the Word of torment is fair and just against disbelievers.
72. It will be said, “Enter the gates of Hell, and dwell there forever. And what a bad abode it is for the arrogant!”
73. And those who obeyed their Lord will be led to Paradise in groups until they reach it, and its gates are opened, and its guards [of angels] will say to them, “Peace be upon you! You have done good deeds, so enter it to dwell here forever.”
74. And they [i.e., believers] will say, “Praise is due to Allah, Who has fulfilled His Promise to us and has made us inherit this land and dwell in Paradise wherever we like. How excellent the reward of good-doers is!”
75. And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne, glorifying their Lord. And it will be judged between them [i.e., all creatures] in justice. And it will be said [by all creatures], “Praise is due to the Lord of the worlds.”
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Ha-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. The revelation of this Book [i.e., The Quran] is from Allah, the All-Exalted, the All-Knower,
3. The Forgiver of sin, the Acceptor of repentance, the One Severe in punishment, the Bestower of bounties. There is no god but Him. To Him the final return is.
4. No one disputes about Allah’s Signs except those who disbelieve [in Him]. So do not be deceived, [O Muhammad], by their wealth.
5. The people of Noah before them belied [their Messengers], and many after them did the same. And every nation plotted to kill their Messenger, and they falsely argued trying to refute the truth, so I seized them [with punishment]. And My punishment was terrible.
6. Thus the Word of your Lord has been justified against those who disbelieve, that they are to be the dwellers of the Fire.
7. Those [angels] who carry the Throne and those [angels] around it glorify and praise their Lord, and submit to Him, and ask Him to forgive those who believe [saying], “Our Lord! Your Mercy and Knowledge can take care of everything, so forgive those who repented and followed Your [Straight] Way, and save them from the torment of Hell.”
8. “O our Lord! And admit them into the eternal Gardens [i.e., Paradise], which You have promised them. And do the same for the good-doers from among their parents, wives, and offspring. Verily, You are the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.”
9. “And save them from doing evil [or the punishment for doing so]. And whomever You save from such punishment on that Day, You have granted him Your Mercy. And that is the great success.”
10. Verily, those who disbelieve will be called [while they are in Hell], “Allah did hate you when you rejected Islam more than you hate yourselves [while in Hell].”
11. They [i.e., disbelievers] will say [while in Hell], “Our Lord! You have caused us to die twice [i.e., one before our birth], and You have given us life twice. And now we have confessed our sins. So is there a way out of here [i.e., out of the Fire]?”
12. [It will be said to them,] “[No,] because when Allah alone was worshipped, you disbelieved, and when partners were associated with Him, you believed. The judgment is with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.”
13. He is the One Who shows you His Signs and sends down provision from the sky for you [i.e., rain], and none remembers [the Bounties of Allah] except those who return [to Him in repentance].
14. So worship Allah alone in sincere submission to Him even though disbelievers may hate it.
15. [Allah is] the Owner of High Ranks, the Owner of the Throne. He sends the Revelation by His Command to whomever He wills so that he [i.e., the Messenger] will warn [people] of the Meeting Day [i.e., the Day of Resurrection],
16. The Day when all appear [before Him], with nothing of them hidden from Allah. [Allah will say,] “Whose is the Sovereignty today?” [And He Himself will reply,] “It is Allah’s, the One, the Conqueror.”
17. On this Day [i.e., the Day of Resurrection] every person will be recompensed for what he earned [whether good or bad]. There is no injustice on this Day. Verily, Allah is Swift in reckoning.
18. And warn them, [O Muhammad], against the Drawing Day [i.e., the Day of Resurrection], when hearts reach up to throats [in fear], weeping. There will be no friends for wrong-doers, nor will they have an intercessor who may be obeyed.
19. He [i.e., Allah] knows the intention of eye looks and what hearts conceal.
20. And Allah judges in justice, but those whom they [i.e., polytheists] worship besides Him cannot judge at all. Verily, Allah is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.
21. Have they not wandered around in the land to see what the end of those before them was? They were stronger and wealthier than they; yet, Allah punished them for their sins, and they had none to protect them from Allah.
22. That was because their Messengers used to come to them with Clear Signs [from Allah]; yet, they disbelieved. So Allah seized them [with His punishment]. Verily, He is All-Strong, Severe in punishment.
23. And We sent Moses with Our Signs and a clear proof,
24. To Pharaoh, Haman, and Korah, but they said, “[He is] a magician and liar.”
25. When he [i.e., Moses] came to them with the truth from Us, they [i.e., Pharaoh and his ministers] said, “Kill the sons of those who have followed him, and let live their women.” But the plots of disbelievers will be in vain.
26. And Pharaoh said, “Let me kill Moses, and let him invoke his Lord [for help]! I fear that he may change your religion or cause corruption to spread in the land.”
27. And Moses said, “I ask my Lord, your Lord, to protect me from every arrogant person who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning.”
28. And a believer of Pharaoh’s family, hiding his faith, said, “Are you going to kill a man only because he says, ‘My Lord is Allah,’ and he has brought you Clear Signs from your Lord? And if he is a liar, his lying will be against him. And if he is truthful, some of what he threatens you of will befall you. Verily, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and liar.”
29. “O my people! You have the dominion today, being victorious in the land. But who will support us against Allah’s torment if it comes on us?” Pharaoh said, “I show you only what I see [to be correct], and I do not guide you except to the right way.”
30. And the man who believed said, “O my people! I fear for you a day like that of the previous people who belied their Messengers,”
31. “Like what happened to the people of Noah, ’Ad, Thamud, and those after them. And Allah does not want to wrong anyone.”
32. “O my people! I fear for you the Day of Mutual Calling [between the dwellers of Paradise and those of Hell, i.e., the Day of Resurrection],”
33. “The Day when you turn your backs fleeing, having no protector from Allah. And whomever Allah sends astray, he will have none to guide him.”
34. And Joseph came to you [i.e., the people of Egypt] before with the Clear Sings, but you continued doubting what he brought you until his death, when you said, “Allah will not send a Messenger after him.” Thus Allah sends astray anyone who is a suspicious sinner.
35. Those who dispute about the Signs of Allah without evidence coming to them are very much hated by Allah and by those who believe. Thus Allah seals up the heart of every arrogant tyrant.
36. And Pharaoh said, “O Haman!Build me a tower so that I may reach the gates,”
37. “The gates of the heavens, to see the God of Moses, and I think that he [i.e., Moses] is a liar.” Thus, the evil deeds of Pharaoh were made fair-seeming to him, and he was turned away from the [Right] Path. And Pharaoh’s plot was an utter failure.
38. And the one who believed said, “O my people! Follow me, and I guide you to the Right Way.”
39. “O my people! This worldly life is nothing but a [temporary] enjoyment, and the Hereafter is the everlasting home, indeed.”
40. “Whoever does an evil deed is not recompensed but for the like of it. And whoever does a good deed, whether he is a male or a female, and he is a believer [in Allah], will enter Paradise and will be rewarded so generously.”
41. “O my people! Why do I call you to salvation, whereas you call me to the Fire?”
42. “You call me to disbelieve in Allah and associate partners with Him without having any knowledge, whereas I call you to believe in the All-Exalted, the Oft-Forgiving.”
43. “Undoubtedly, what you call me to worship cannot respond to my invocation, neither in this world nor in the Hereafter. And our return will surely be to Allah, and polytheists [and transgressors] shall dwell in the Fire.”
44. “And you will remember what I say to you, and I place my trust in Allah. Verily, He is the All-Seer of people.”
45. So Allah saved him [i.e., the believer] from the evils of their plot, and a terrible torment [i.e., drowning] befell Pharaoh’s people.
46. They [i.e., Pharaoh’s people] are shown their positions in the Fire in the morning and in the evening [while still in their graves]. And on the Day of the Hour, [it will be said,] “Take Pharaoh’s people to the most terrible torment.”
47. And when they [i.e., the dwellers of the Fire] dispute in the Fire, the weak of them will say to their arrogant [leaders], “We did follow you. Will you take from us a portion of the Fire?”
48. Those who were arrogant will say, “We are all in here [i.e., the Fire]. Truly, Allah has judged between people.”
49. And those in the Fire will say to the guards of Hell [i.e., angels], “Invoke your Lord to lighten our torment [even] for one day.”
50. They [i.e., the guards] will say, “Did your Messengers not come to you with the Clear Signs?” They will reply, “Yes.” Then the guards will say, “You invoke, [not we]. The invocation of disbelievers will not be answered.”
51. Verily, We [i.e., Allah] give victory to Our Messengers and those who believe, in this worldly life and on the Day of Resurrection,
52. The Day when excuses will not benefit wrong-doers, and the Curse will be upon them, and theirs will be the worst abode [in Hell].
53. And We gave Moses the guidance [i.e., Revelation], and We made the children of Israel inherit the Scripture [i.e., The Torah],
54. As a guide and a Reminder for those of understanding.
55. So be patient, [O Muhammad]. The Promise of Allah is true, and ask Allah to forgive your fault, and glorify and praise your Lord in the evening and the morning.
56. Truly, those [polytheists and disbelievers] who dispute about the Signs of Allah without any evidence coming to them do so because of arrogance in their hearts, and they will never achieve their goals. So seek refuge, [O Muhammad], in Allah, for He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer, indeed.
57. The creation of the heavens and the earth is certainly greater than the creation of mankind, but most people do not know.
58. And those who are blind cannot be equal to those who can see. [Similarly,] those who believe and do good deeds cannot be equal to evil-doers; yet, you remember only a little.
59. Truly, the Hour [i.e., the Day of Resurrection] is coming; there is no doubt about it, but most people do not believe [in this].
60. And your Lord said, “Invoke Me, and I will respond to you. Those who are too proud to invoke [or worship] Me will surely enter Hell in humiliation.”
61. Allah is He Who has made the night for you so that you may rest in it, and the day for you so that you may see [in it]. Verily, Allah is of Grace to people, but most people are not grateful.
62. That is Allah, your Lord, the Creator of everything. There is no god but Him. How then do you turn away [from Him to other so-called partners]?
63. [The denial of these people] is similar to that of those before who used to deny the Signs of Allah.
64. Allah is He Who has made the earth as a dwelling place for you [i.e., mankind], and the sky as a well-built structure. And He has formed you in the best shape, and He has given you of the best provision. That is Allah, your Lord. Blessed is Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
65. He is the Ever-Living. There is no god but Him. So worship Him alone in sincere submission. Praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
66. Say, [O Muhammad], “I have been forbidden [by Allah] to worship those whom you worship besides Allah since I received the Clear Signs [i.e., Revelation] from my Lord. And I am commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds.”
67. He is the One Who has created you from soil, then from a mixed drop [of male and female sexual discharge], then from a clot, then He forms you as an infant, then you grow to become adults, then to become old – although some of you die before – and then you reach an appointed time [i.e., death] in order that you may remember [Resurrection].
68. He is the One Who gives life and causes death. If He decides on something, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is.
69. Do you not see those [disbelievers] who dispute about the Signs of Allah? How can they turn away from the truth to falsehood [i.e., from belief to disbelief]?
70. Those who belied the Book [i.e., The Quran] and what We sent to Our Messengers will come to know [their punishment].
71. When fetters and chains are around their necks [in Hell], they will be dragged
72. In boiling water, then thrown into the Fire.
73. Then it will be said to them, “Where are those whom you used to take as partners
74. Besides Allah?” They will reply, “They have gone away from us. In fact, we did not worship anything before.” Thus Allah sends disbelievers astray.
75. [The angels will say to them,] “That [torment] is the recompense for your unjustified rejoice [at your errors and crimes] in your worldly life.”
76. “Enter the gates of Hell, and dwell there forever. It is a very bad abode for the arrogant.”
77. So be patient, [O Muhammad]. The Promise of Allah is certainly true [i.e., the victory of Muslims and the defeat of disbelievers]. Either We show you [in your life] some of what We have promised them [i.e., punishment in this world] or We cause you to die and to Us they will be returned [and be punished in the Hereafter].
78. And We have sent [many] Messengers before you. We have related to you the stories of some of them, but not the stories of all. And no Messenger can bring a miracle except with the Permission of Allah. When the Command of Allah comes [on the Day of Resurrection], all [believers and disbelievers] will be judged in justice. And there and then, the lovers of falsehood will be losers.
79. Allah is He Who has created cattle for you in order that you may ride on some and eat of some.
80. And from them [i.e., cattle] you have [other] benefits [like wool and ploughing], and you may use them for other purposes [like carrying loads]. And on them and ships you are carried.
81. And He [i.e., Allah] shows you His Signs [in the universe and in His creatures]. Which of Allah’s Signs do you deny?
82. Have they [i.e., disbelievers] not traveled in the land and seen what was the end of those before them? They were more in number, more powerful, and wealthier. Yet, what they used to earn [of wealth] was of no help to them.
83. When their Messengers came to them with the Clear Signs, they were glad about what they had got of knowledge [and thus rejected the Message]. And what they used to mock at surrounded them [as a punishment from Allah].
84. When they [i.e., disbelievers] saw Our punishment, they said, “We believe in Allah alone, and We reject what we used to take as partners with Him.”
85. Their faith upon seeing Our punishment is of no good to them. That is the Law of Allah that has always been in effect with people [i.e., faith is not accepted at the moment of death]. There, disbelievers did lose.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Ha-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. [This Quran is] a revelation from the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
3. [It is] a Book, the Verses of which are made clear, a Quran in Arabic for those who know.
4. It gives the glad news [to believers] and warns [sinners and disbelievers], but most people turn away, for they do not hear.
5. And they [i.e., the Arab pagans] said, “Our hearts are covered, so that what you call us to does not reach them, and there is deafness in our ears, and there is a veil between you and us. So you act [according to your own way], and we act [according to our own way].”
6. Say, [O Muhammad], “I am a human like you. It is revealed to me that your god is One God, so follow His Straight Path and ask Him to forgive you. And woe is to polytheists,
7. Who do not give zakat [i.e., the appointed charity] and who deny the Hereafter! ”
8. Verily, those who believe and do good deeds will have an endless reward [i.e., Paradise].
9. Say, [O Muhammad], “Do you disbelieve in Him Who created the earth in two days and do you set equals to Him? That is the Lord of the worlds [i.e., of all creatures].”
10. And He placed on it [i.e., the earth] mountains above it, and blessed it, and planned its sustenance in four days. This is an explanation to those who ask.
11. Then He rose over towards the sky when it was smoke. He said to it [i.e., the sky] and to the earth, “Come both of you [i.e., obey] willingly or unwillingly.” They both said, “We come willingly.”
12. Then He completed the creation of seven heavens in two days, and He arranged for each heaven what it needed. And We adorned the nearest heaven with bright stars and provided it with angel guards. That is the Decree of the All-Exalted, the All-Knower.
13. If they turn away, say, [O Muhammad], “I have warned you of destruction like that which hit ’Ad and Thamud.”
14. When the Messengers came to them from before them and from behind them [i.e., promising reward for good-doers and punishment for evil-doers] [saying], “Do not worship but Allah,” they replied, “Had our Lord willed, He would have sent down angels, [not humans like you]. Thus, we reject what you are sent with.”
15. As for ’Ad, they were arrogant and unjust in the land. And they said, “Who is stronger than we?” Did they not see that Allah, Who had created them, is stronger than they? And they used to deny Our Signs.
16. So We sent against them a very cold and strong wind in some terrible days to make them taste a disgracing torment in this life. And the torment of the Hereafter is surely more disgracing, and they will not be supported.
17. As for Thamud, We called them to the Right Way, but they preferred blindness to guidance. So the humiliating torment seized them for what they used to earn [i.e., rejecting the Message of Allah].
18. And We saved those who believed [in Allah] and used to fear [Him].
19. And when the enemies of Allah are gathered to the Fire [on the Day of Judgment], they will be driven into it together.
20. When they reach it [i.e., the Fire], their ears, their eyes, and their skins will testify against them concerning what they used to do [of evils].
21. And they will say [blaming their organs], “Why have you testified against us?” They will reply, “Allah, Who causes all things to speak, has caused us to speak. And He created you the first time, and to Him you will be returned.”
22. And you [i.e., evil-doers] did not hide yourselves, lest your ears, eyes, and skins should testify against you, for you thought that Allah does not know much of what you do.
23. And that thought of yours about Allah has destroyed you, and, as a result, you have become among the losers [in the Hereafter].
24. If they [i.e., evil-doers] are patient [or not], the Fire will be their dwelling place. And if they offer excuses [for their disbelief], their excuses will not be accepted [of them].
25. And We have assigned for them [i.e., polytheists] companions [of men and jinn], who have made fair-seeming to them what is before them [i.e., their evil deeds] and what is behind them [i.e., their denial of the Hereafter]. So the Word [of punishment] is justified against them as it was against communities of jinn and mankind before them. They were real losers.
26. And those who disbelieve say, “Do not listen to this Quran and reject it so that you may be victorious.”
27. So We shall certainly make those who disbelieve taste a severe torment, and We will recompense them for the worst of what they used to do.
28. That, the Fire, is the recompense of the enemies of Allah. In it they will have their eternal home as a recompense for their denial of Our Signs.
29. And those who disbelieve will say, “O our Lord! Show us those of jinn and mankind who made us astray, and we will place them both under our feet so as to become among the lowest [in the Fire].”
30. Verily, those who say, “Our Lord is Allah,” and obey [Allah], angels will come down to them [at the time of death] [saying], “Do not fear [what is ahead], nor should you grieve [over those whom you have left behind]. And receive the glad news of Paradise, which you have been promised.”
31. “We [i.e., angels] are your companions in this life and in the Hereafter. And in it [i.e., Paradise] you will have what you may desire and what you may ask for,”
32. “As an entertainment from Allah, the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”
33. And who is of better speech than one who calls to [the religion of] Allah and does good and says, “I am truly one of Muslims.”?
34. And the good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. React in a good way to an evil deed, and the one with whom you have an enmity will become as if he was a close friend.
35. And no one has such a quality [of tolerance] except those who are patient and except those who have a great share [of happiness in this life and in the Hereafter].
36. And if Satan whispers evil to you, seek refuge in Allah. Truly, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.
37. And from among His Signs are the night, the day, the sun, and the moon. Do not prostrate yourselves to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate yourselves to Allah [alone], Who created them, if you [really] worship Him.
38. If they [i.e., polytheists] are too arrogant to do so, those with your Lord [i.e., angels] glorify Him in the night and the day without getting tired [of glorification].
39. And from among His Signs is that you see the earth dead [i.e., plantless], but when We send down water [i.e., rain] on it, it is filled with life and growth [of all kinds of plants]. Truly, He Who gives life to it is Able to give life to the dead. Verily, He is Able to do everything.
40. Verily, those who deny Our Signs cannot hide themselves from Us. Who is better: one thrown in the Fire or one coming secure on the Day of Resurrection? Do whatever you like; He does see what you do.
41. Truly, those who disbelieve in the Reminder [i.e., The Quran] when it comes to them [will be punished]. And it is certainly a well-protected Book,
42. To which falsehood cannot come from before it, nor from behind it. It is a revelation from the All-Wise, the Praise- Worthy.
43. What is being said to you, [O Muhammad], [of denial and rejection] was said to the Messengers before you. Verily, your Lord is the Possessor of Forgiveness and the Possessor of Severe Punishment [as well].
44. And if We [i.e., Allah] had sent The Quran in a foreign language [other than Arabic], they [i.e., polytheists] would have said, “Why are its Verses not explained [in a language which we can understand]? How is it sent in a foreign language and addressed to Arabs?” Say, [O Muhammad], “To those who believe, it is guidance and healing. And those who do not believe have deafness in their ears, and it is blindness to them. Such people are called from a very far place [i.e., they do not care or listen].”
45. And We gave Moses the Scripture [i.e., The Torah], but they disputed about it. And if a Word had not already been decreed by your Lord [i.e., delaying their torment to a certain time], the torment would have been hastened to them. And they are in doubt about it [i.e., The Quran].
46. Whoever does good does so for himself, and whoever does evil does so against himself. And your Lord never wrongs people.
47. To Him [alone] belongs the knowledge of the Hour. And no fruit comes out, nor does a female conceive or deliver, except by His Knowledge. And He will call to them [i.e., polytheists], “Where are My partners [whom you invented]?” They will reply, “We have told You that none of us [now] witnesses [that You have partners].”
48. And those whom they [i.e., polytheists] used to worship will turn away from them, and they will know that there is no escape [from the punishment of Allah].
49. Man does not get tired of invoking for good things [from Allah]. And when an evil touches him, he becomes hopeless and desperate.
50. And if We grant him a mercy after a distress, he will surely say, “I deserve this, and I do not think that the Hour is coming. And if I am returned to Him [on the Day of Resurrection], He will certainly grant me His mercy [again].” Truly, We will then tell those who disbelieved what they did, and We will let them taste of a severe punishment.
51. And when We grant man a bounty, he turns away [from Us]. And when an evil touches him, he invokes Us repeatedly.
52. Say, [O Muhammad], [to disbelievers], “Tell me, if it [i.e., The Quran] is from Allah and you disbelieve in it, who is then more astray than one far from guidance?”
53. We will show them Our Signs in the horizons [i.e., Islamic victories] and in their own bodies until it is proved to them that it [i.e., The Quran] is the truth. Is it not enough that Allah is a Witness over everything?
54. They [i.e., disbelievers] are, in fact, in doubt of meeting their Lord [on the Day of Resurrection]. Verily, Allah does encompass [i.e., control] everything.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Ha-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. Ain-Seen-Qaf. [Only Allah knows the exact explanation of these letters.]
3. Similarly, Allah sends Revelation to you, [O Muhammad], and to those [Messengers] before you. Allah is the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.
4. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth, and Allah is the Most High, the Most Great.
5. The heavens are about to crack from above [in fear of His Greatness], and angels glorify and praise their Lord and ask Him to forgive those on the earth. Truly, Allah is the Oft- Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
6. As for those who take protectors besides Him, Allah is a Witness over them. And you [i.e., Muhammad] are not a guardian over them [i.e., you are only a Warner].
7. [As We revealed to Messengers before you], We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], a Quran in Arabic so that you may warn [the people of] the Mother of the Towns [i.e., Makkah] and those around it and warn of the Day of Gathering [i.e., the Day of Resurrection], in which there is no doubt, when a party will be in Paradise and a party in the Blazing Fire.
8. And if Allah had willed, he would have made them [i.e., all people] one nation [either all guided or all astray]. But Allah admits whomever He wills in His Mercy, and for wrong-doers there will be no protector or helper.
9. Or have they [i.e., polytheists] taken protectors besides Him? Allah alone is the Protector, and He gives life to the dead, and He is Able to do everything.
10. And if you differ about anything, the decision about it is with Allah. That is Allah, my Lord. In Him I place my trust, and to Him I will return.
11. [He is] the Creator of the heavens and the earth. He has made for you mates from yourselves [i.e., males and females from the same species], and has made pairs of cattle [i.e., males and females too]. He creates you in it [i.e., the womb]. There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.
12. He has the domain of the heavens and the earth. He grants provision generously to whomever He wills, and straitens it to whomever He wills. Verily, He is the All-Knower of everything.
13. He [i.e., Allah] has ordained for you of religion what He has revealed to Noah, you [i.e., Muhammad], Abraham, Moses, and Jesus: to abide by religion and not to divide into sects. Polytheists are too arrogant to accept what you call them to [i.e., faith in One God]. Allah chooses for Himself whomever He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns to Him.
14. And they did not divide [about the truth] except after knowledge had come to them and only out of arrogance. And if a Word from your Lord had not already passed [to delay their punishment] to an appointed term [in the Hereafter], their torment would have been hastened to them [in this world]. And, verily, those who inherited the Scripture [in later generations] after them were in doubt about the true religion.
15. So call to this religion [of Islam only], and go straight, [O Muhammad], as you have been commanded, and do not follow their [i.e., polytheists’] desires. And say, “I believe in what Allah has sent down of the Book [i.e., all Revealed Books], and I am commanded to judge among you in justice. Allah is our Lord and your Lord. We are accountable for our deeds, and you for yours. There is no dispute between you and us. Allah will gather us [i.e., all on the Day of Judgment], and to Him is the final return [of all people].”
16. And as for those who dispute about Allah after some [people] believed in Him, their evidence is false unto their Lord, and on them is His anger, and they will have a severe torment [on the Day of Judgment].
17. Allah is He Who has sent down the Book [i.e., The Quran] in truth and justice. And it may be that the Hour [i.e., the Day of Resurrection] is very close.
18. Those who do not believe in it [i.e., the Hour] seek to hasten it, and those who believe in it are afraid of it and know that it will truly come. Verily, those who doubt the Hour are very much astray.
19. Allah is Most Kind to people. He gives provision to whomever He wills, and He is the All-Strong, the All- Exalted.
20. Whoever seeks [by his deeds] the reward of the Hereafter, We give him an increase in his reward. And whoever seeks [by his deeds] the reward of this world, We give him of it, but with no share in the Hereafter.
21. Or do they [i.e., polytheists] have partners who have ordained of religion for them what is not allowed by Allah? And had it not been for a decisive Word [to delay their punishment], they would have been punished immediately. And wrong- doers will have a painful torment [in the Hereafter].
22. [There and then] you will see wrong-doers fearful of what they earned [in this world], and the torment will inevitably fall on them. As for those who believe and do good deeds, they will be in the gardens of Paradise, where they will have what they desire with their Lord. That is really the great Grace [from Allah].
23. That [i.e., Paradise] is what Allah gives as glad news to those who believe and do good deeds. Say, [O Muhammad], “I do not ask for a wage from you except your kindness to me for the kinship between you and me.” And whoever does a good deed, We shall increase his reward for it. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving and Most Grateful.
24. Or do they say that he [i.e., Muhammad] has invented lies against Allah? If Allah had willed, He could have sealed up your heart [i.e., made you forget all The Quran], [if they are telling the truth]. And Allah erases falsehood and firmly establishes the truth with His Words [i.e., proofs]. Verily, He is the All-Knower of what hearts conceal.
25. And He is the One Who accepts repentance from people, forgives their sins, and knows what you do.
26. And He answers [the invocation of] those who believe and do good deeds, and increases their reward from His Grace. And disbelievers will have a severe punishment.
27. And if Allah had given people a provision more than they need, they would have become transgressing tyrants in the land. But He sends down [provision] as much as He wills. Verily, as for His servants, He is the Well-Aware, the All-Seer.
28. And He is the One Who sends down rain after they have despaired, and He spreads His Mercy. And He is the Protector, the Praise-Worthy.
29. And form among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and whatever living creatures that He has spread in both of them. And He is Able to gather them all [on the Day of Resurrection] when He wills.
30. And whatever of misfortunes that may befall you is due to what you have earned [of evil deeds], and He forgives a lot [of your sins].
31. And you cannot escape [Allah’s Plans] in the land. And you have no protector or helper other than Allah.
32. And from among His Signs are ships in the sea like mountains.
33. If He wills, He can cause the wind to cease, so that they [i.e., the ships] become motionless on the surface of the sea. In that there are surely Signs for everyone who is patient and grateful.
34. Or He may destroy them [i.e., the ships] because of what people earn [of sins], and He forgives a lot.
35. And those who dispute about Our Signs know that they cannot escape [Our punishment].
36. What you have been given is only a tentative enjoyment in this life, and what is with Allah [i.e., Paradise] is better and more lasting for those who believe and put their trust in their Lord,
37. And who avoid the major sins and illegal sexual intercourse, and they forgive if they are angry,
38. And who obey their Lord, perform prayer, consult one another [in serious matters], and spend [in charity] of what We have provided them,
39. And who take revenge if they are oppressed [by an aggressive enemy].
40. And the recompense for an evil is a similar evil. But if one forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is with Allah. Verily, He does not like wrong-doers.
41. And whoever takes revenge after being wronged is not to be blamed. 42. Blame is actually on those who wrong people and cause harm to others with no justification. Those will have a painful punishment.
43. And if one is patient and forgives, this is something quite recommended.
44. And if Allah sends one astray, one has no other protector. And you will see wrong-doers, when they see the torment, saying, “Is there a way to return [to the world]?”
45. And you will see them [i.e., wrong-doers] brought to it [i.e., Hell] in disgrace, looking [at Hell] stealthily. And those who believe will say, “The [real] losers are those who have lost themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection.” Wrong- doers will certainly be in a permanent torment.
46. And they [i.e., wrong-doers] will have no protectors to support them besides Allah. And he whom Allah sends astray has no way.
47. Obey your Lord before the coming of a Day that cannot be avoided [i.e., the Day of Resurrection]. There will be no escape on that Day, and you cannot deny [your sins or crimes].
48. If they turn away, We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], a guardian over them. Your duty is only to convey [the Message]. And if We make man taste a mercy from Us, he rejoices at it. But if a distress befalls them for what their hands have earned, man becomes ungrateful [and forgets the Bounties of Allah].
49. Allah has the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He creates whatever He wills. He grants females [i.e., female children] to whomever He wills and grants males [i.e., male children] to whomever He wills.
50. Or He grants both males and females, and He makes barren whomever He wills. Verily, He is the All-Knower, the Most Able.
51. It is not for any human that Allah speaks to him unless it is by [direct] Revelation, or from behind a veil [as was the case with Moses], or that He sends a messenger [i.e., an angel] to reveal what He wills [to human Messengers] with His Permission. He is Most High, Most Wise, indeed.
52. And thus We have sent to you, [O Muhammad], a Revelation [i.e., The Quran] by Our Command, [before which] you did not know what is the Book or what is faith. But We have made it [i.e., The Quran] a light with which We guide whomever We will of Our servants. And you certainly guide [people] to the Straight Path,
53. The Path of Allah, Who dominates all that is in the heavens and the earth. [Eventually,] all matters go to Allah [for decision and judgment].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Ha-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. By the clear Book [i.e., The Quran],
3. We have made it a Quran in Arabic so that you may understand [it].
4. And, verily, it [i.e., The Quran] is in the Mother of the Book [i.e., the Preserved Book] with Us, so glorious and so filled with wisdom.
5. Are We going not to call you to the Reminder [i.e., The Quran] [simply] because you are a transgressing people?
6. And how many a prophet We have sent to former nations.
7. And never did a prophet come to them but they used to mock at him.
8. So We destroyed those who were stronger than these [men who now deny your Message, Muhammad]. And the example of the ancients has passed [as a lesson to later people who may belie Messengers].
9. And if you [i.e., Muhammad] ask them [i.e., polytheists], “Who has created the heavens and the earth?”, they will certainly reply, “The All- Exalted, the All-Knower, has created them.”
10. [He is the One] Who has made for you the earth like a still bed, and He has made for you roads on it so that you may [easily] reach your destinations [from town to town or from country to country].
11. And [He is the One] Who sends down water [i.e., rain] from the sky in due measure, with which We give life to a dead land. In the same manner, you will be resurrected [from your graves].
12. And [He is the One] Who has created all pairs [of animals and plants], and He has made for you what you ride on of ships and cattle
13. So that you may sit on their backs, and may remember the Favor of your Lord and say, “Glory is to Him Who has subjected this for us, and we could never have done so [by our own efforts].”
14. “And, verily, to our Lord we will return [on the Day of Resurrection].”
15. Despite this, they [i.e., polytheists] have assigned for Him some of His creatures [by claiming that angels are His daughters]. Truly, man is clearly ungrateful.
16. Or has He taken daughters out of what He has created and He has chosen sons for you?
17. And if one of them is told of a newly-born female, the like of whom he has assigned for the Most Gracious, his face becomes dark and he tries to conceal his rage.
18. Or is the one who is brought up in ornaments and cannot express herself clearly in a dispute [i.e., a woman] [proper to be His daughter]?
19. And they [i.e., polytheists] make angels, who are the servants of the Most Gracious, females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be asked [about it].
20. And they said, “Had the Most Gracious willed, we would not have worshipped them [the idols].” They have no knowledge [of what they claim]. They only fabricate lies [against Allah].
21. Or have We given them [i.e., polytheists] a Book before this [i.e., The Quran] and they are holding fast to it?
22. No. They only reply, “We have found our fathers following a certain religion, and we are following their footsteps.”
23. We did not send a Warner [i.e., a Messenger] before you to a town but the rich said, “We have found our fathers on this way, and we are [just] following their footsteps.”
24. The Messenger said, “Even if I bring you a religion better in guidance than what you have found your fathers following, [will you insist on following your fathers?]” They replied, “We do disbelieve in what you are sent with.”
25. So We took revenge on them. And see what the end of those who belied [the Messengers] was.
26. And [remember] when Abraham said to his father and his people, “I am innocent of what you worship.”
27. “As for Him Who created me, He will guide me.”
28. And he made it [i.e., that there is no god but Allah] a Word permanent among his offspring so that they may return [to it].
29. I made these [polytheists] and their fathers live longer and longer until the truth [i.e., The Quran] and a clear Messenger came to them.
30. When the truth [i.e., The Quran] came to them, they said, “This is magic, and in it we disbelieve.”
31. And they said, “Why has this Quran not been sent down to a great man in the two towns [i.e., Makkah and Ta’if]?”
32. Is it they who distribute the Mercy of Allah? We have given each of them his share in this world, and We have raised some above some in ranks so that they may need one another. And the Mercy of your Lord is much better than what they collect [of wealth].
33. And had it not been that disbelievers might think that wealth indicates Our love, We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Gracious houses with roofs and ladders of silver, by which they ascend,
34. And for their houses doors [of silver too] and [silver] thrones, on which they can sit,
35. And adornment of gold. All this would be only a [temporary] enjoyment of this worldly life; and the hereafter with your Lord is for those who are pious.
36. And whoever ignores this Quran, We will assign a devil to be his companion.
37. And they [i.e., devils] do turn them away from the [Right] Path, and they think that they are guided.
38. When he comes to Us [on the Day of Resurrection], he will say, “I wish that a distance like that between the east and the west had been between me and you [i.e., the devil]. What an evil companion you are!”
39. On this Day it is of no use for you, after your wrong-doing, that you are sharers in punishment.
40. Can you, [O Muhammad], make the deaf hear or can you guide the blind and those in clear error? [Your duty is to convey the Message only.]
41. And even if We take you, [O Muhammad], away [by death], We will take revenge on them [i.e., disbelievers].
42. Or We will show you [i.e., Muhammad] [in your life] what We promised them [i.e., defeat], and We can conquer them [i.e., disbelievers].
43. So, [O Muhammad], hold fast to what has been revealed to you [i.e., The Quran]. You are on the Straight Path, indeed.
44. And it [i.e., The Quran] is a Reminder for you and your followers, and you will be asked [about it] [on the Day of Resurrection].
45. And ask, [O Muhammad], those Messengers whom We sent before you if We allowed the worship of gods other than [Allah], the Most Gracious. [All Messengers came with one Message: to worship Allah only.]
46. And We sent Moses with Our Signs to Pharaoh and his people, and he [i.e., Moses] said, “Truly, I am the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds.”
47. When he [i.e., Moses] came to them with Our Signs, they began to mock at him.
48. And We did not show them a Sign but it was greater than the one before; [yet, they did not believe]. So We seized them with torture so that they might return [to Allah].
49. And they said [to Moses], “O magician! Invoke your Lord for us according to your covenant with Him. [And if He answers you,] we will be on the Right Path.”
50. When We removed the torment from them [i.e., Pharaoh’s people], they broke their promise.
51. And Pharaoh addressed his people saying, “O my people! Do I not have the Kingdom of Egypt, and these rivers flow under me? Do you not see?”
52. “In fact, I am better than this weak man [i.e., Moses], who cannot express himself fluently.”
53. “Why are bracelets of gold not granted to him [i.e., Moses], nor were angels sent to accompany him?”
54. He [i.e., Pharaoh] could befool his people, so they obeyed him. They were really a disobedient people.
55. When they [i.e., Pharaoh’s people] angered Us, We took revenge on them, and We drowned them all.
56. Thus, We made them a lesson and an example for later generations.
57. And when the son of Mary [i.e., Jesus] was set as an example, your people, [O Muhammad], turned away,
58. And they said, “Who is better: our gods or he [i.e., Jesus]?” They mentioned him only for argument; they only love arguments.
59. He [i.e., Jesus] was only a servant [of Ours], to whom We granted Our Grace and whom We made an example for the children of Israel.
60. And had We willed, We would have made angels inherit the earth [instead of mankind].
61. And he [i.e., Jesus by his descent on the earth] will be a sign for [the nearness of] the Hour. So do not ever doubt it, and obey Me; this is the Straight Path.
62. Do not let Satan turn you away [from the Straight Path]. He is a clear enemy to you.
63. And when Jesus came with the Clear Signs [i.e., his miracles], he said, “I have come to you with Prophethood to clarify to you what you used to differ in, so fear Allah and follow me.”
64. “Verily, Allah is my Lord and your Lord. So obey Him, and this is the Straight Path.”
65. But they divided into sects. So woe to those who wronged [themselves] from the torture of a painful Day [i.e., the Day of Resurrection]!
66. Do they only wait for the Hour, coming suddenly to them without perceiving, [when their regret will be in vain]?
67. Friends on that Day will become enemies one to another, except the pious.
68. [Allah will say to believers,] “O My servants! There is no fear on you this Day [of Resurrection], nor shall you grieve,”
69. “Those who believed in Our Signs and were Muslims.”
70. “Enter Paradise, you and your equals, and rejoice.”
71. They will be served with trays and cups of gold. And in it [i.e., Paradise], there will be what satisfies desires and what pleases the eyes; and there you will dwell forever.
72. And that is Paradise, which you have been made to inherit because of the good deeds which you used to do [in this world].
73. In it there will be for you all kinds of fruits, of which you will eat.
74. As for criminals, they will dwell eternally in the torment of Hell.
75. This torment will not cease for them [not for one hour], and they will abide in it in despair.
76. And We did not wrong them, but they did wrong [themselves] [by rejecting the Message of Allah].
77. And they will cry, “O Malik [i.e., the angel keeping Hell]! Let your Lord cause us to die [instead of this endless torture].” He will reply, “You will stay here forever.”
78. We have brought the truth [i.e., The Quran] to you, but most of you hate the truth.
79. Then they [i.e., disbelievers] plot [against Messengers], and We have Our plans [too].
80. Or do they think that We do not hear their secrets and their private counsel? And Our messengers [i.e., angels] by them record [their words and their deeds].
81. Say, [O Muhammad], “If the Most Gracious had had a son, I would have been the first to obey Him, [but He has no son or equal.]
82. Glory is to the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne, and He is above what they attribute [falsely to Him].
83. So leave them [i.e., disbelievers] with their nonsense and mockery until they meet the Day which they are promised [i.e., the Day of Resurrection].
84. Allah is the Only God [to be worshipped] in the heavens and the Only God [to be worshipped] on the earth. And He is the All-Wise, the All- Knower.
85. And blessed is He, Who has the dominion of the heavens and the earth and what is between them. And He [alone] has the knowledge of the Hour, and to Him you will be returned [on the Day of Resurrection].
86. And those whom they [i.e., polytheists] invoke besides Him do not have the power of intercession, which is given to those who bear witness to the truth and know it.
87. And if you ask them [i.e., polytheists] who created them, they will reply, “Allah.” Why then do they turn away [from the truth and take partners with Him]?
88. And he [i.e., Muhammad] said, “O my Lord! These are a people who do not believe.”
89. So pardon them, and say [to them], “Peace,” and they will come to know [their terrible end].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Ha-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. By the clear Book [i.e., The Quran],
3. Truly, We sent it [i.e., The Quran] in a blessed night, warning [disbelievers and sinners of Our punishment].
4. In it [i.e., that night], every final ordainment is decreed.
5. By Command from Us, We are sending a Messenger [i.e., Muhammad],
6. As a mercy from your Lord. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All- Knower,
7. The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you really believe.
8. There is no god but Him. He gives life, and He causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.
9. They [i.e., polytheists] are in doubt [of Resurrection] and do not take the matter seriously.
10. So you wait until the Day when the sky brings a [thick] visible smoke,
11. Which will cover people. [It will be said to them,] “This is a painful punishment.”
12. They will say, “O our Lord! Remove away from us the torment. We will surely be believers.”
13. How can they remember [and be believers], when a Messenger came to them with a clear Message?
14. They turned away from him and said, “He is a madman taught [to recite The Quran].”
15. Even if We had removed the torment for a while, you would have returned [to your disbelief].
16. On the day [of Resurrection] when We give the greatest punishment, We will take revenge on them [i.e., polytheists, disbelievers, and sinners].
17. And We tested, before them, Pharaoh’s people, and a noble Messenger [i.e., Moses] came to them,
18. [Saying,] “Deliver to me the servants of Allah [i.e., the people of Israel then]. I am truly an honest Messenger [sent] to you.”
19. “And do not behave arrogantly with Allah. I have truly come to you with clear proofs [which prove that I am a Messenger from Allah].”
20. “And I do take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me [to death].”
21. “If you do not want to believe me, leave me [alone, at least].”
22. Then He [i.e., Moses] invoked his Lord [saying], “These people are criminals.”
23. [Allah said,] “You leave with the people of Israel by night; surely, you will be pursued [by Pharaoh].”
24. “And leave the sea as it is [i.e., divided by a land road caused by a strike of Moses’ stick, a miracle by Allah’s will]. They [i.e., Pharaoh and his army] will be drowned.”
25. How many gardens and springs they [i.e., Pharaoh’s people] left behind [after Allah had drowned them in the sea],
26. And crops and comfortable houses,
27. And luxuries, which they were enjoying!
28. We made all that [of Pharaoh’s people] be inherited by another people.
29. And the heaven and the earth did not weep for them [i.e., not grieving for their destruction], nor were they [i.e., Pharaoh’s people] given a delay.
30. And We saved the children of Israel from the humiliating punishment
31. By Pharaoh, who was really a transgressing tyrant.
32. And We knowingly chose them over other people [of that time].
33. And We brought to them of Signs that make a great trial [i.e., a test for them].
34. And these [polytheists of Arab pagans] do say,
35. “It is only our first death, and we shall not be resurrected [after death].”
36. They said [to believers], “Bring back our [dead] forefathers, if you are truthful.”
37. Are they better or the people of Tubba’ [i.e., of Saba’] and those before them? We [i.e., Allah] destroyed them, [for] they were criminals.
38. And We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them playfully [i.e., with no serious purpose].
39. We did not create them except with truth [i.e., to test people], but most of them do not know.
40. Verily, the Day of Judgment is an appointment for all of them,
41. The Day when a relative cannot be of any benefit to another relative, and no one can help another,
42. Except for a mercy from Allah. He is the All-Exalted, the Most Merciful.
43. Truly, the tree of zaqqum,
44. Is the food of the sinner,
45. Like dirty oil boiling in bellies,
46. Like the boiling of scalding water.
47. Take him, and drive him into the middle of Hell,
48. Then pour over his head of the torment of boiling water.
49. [It will be said to him,] “Taste [this]. You used to call yourself mighty and honored.”
50. “This is what you used to doubt.”
51. The pious will be in a secure place [i.e., Paradise], indeed,
52. In Gardens and Springs,
53. Dressed in fine silk and shiny ornaments, facing one another.
54. Yes, so it will be. And We shall marry them to beautiful females with lovely eyes.
55. They will call in it [i.e., Paradise] for any kind of fruit, enjoying security there.
56. There [in Paradise] they will never taste death, and Allah will save them from the torment of Hell,
57. As a Bounty from your Lord. That is the great success.
58. And We have made it [i.e., The Quran] easy in your tongue so that they may remember.
59. So you [i.e., Muhammad] wait [for your victory]. Indeed, they [i.e., disbelievers] are waiting [too] [for their defeat].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Ha-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. The revelation of the Book [i.e., The Quran] is from Allah, the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.
3. Verily, in the heavens and the earth there are Signs for believers.
4. And in your creation and whatever animals that He created there are Signs for those who certainly believe.
5. And the alternation of night and day, and what Allah sends from the sky of provision [i.e., rain], with which He gives life to the earth after its death, and the turning about of winds [in all directions] are all Signs for those who understand.
6. These are the Signs of Allah, which We recite to you with truth. In which speech after Allah and His Signs do they then believe?
7. Woe to every sinful liar!
8. He [i.e., the liar] hears the Verses of Allah [in The Quran] recited to him; yet, he arrogantly insists [on disbelief] as though he did not hear them. So bear to him the glad news of a painful torture.
9. And if he knows some of Our Verses [in The Quran], he mocks at them. Such people will have a humiliating torture.
10. Hell will be waiting for them, and what they have earned [of wealth in this world] will not benefit them, nor will the protectors whom they took instead of Allah. And they will have a great punishment.
11. This [Quran] is guidance. And those who disbelieve in the Signs of their Lord will have a painful torture.
12. Allah is He who has subjected the sea for you so that ships may sail through it by His Command, and so that you may seek of His Bounty [as well], and so that you may be grateful [to Him].
13. And He has subjected for you what is in the heavens and the earth, all as a grace from Him. Truly, in that there are Signs for those who think deep.
14. Tell, [O Muhammad], believers to forgive those who do not hope for meeting Allah [if they harm them] so that Allah will punish them for their misdeeds [in the Hereafter, even if they are pardoned by Muslims now].
15. Whoever does a good deed, it is for himself. And whoever does an evil deed, it is against himself. And then to your Lord you will be returned.
16. And We gave the children of Israel the Scripture, kingship, and Prophethood. And We provided them with good things [of foods and drinks]. And We preferred them above all people [of their time].
17. And We gave them clear proofs of [important] matters [in The Torah], and they did not have disputes until knowledge came to them, out of envy among themselves. Verily, your Lord will judge among them on the Day of Resurrection concerning what they used to differ in.
18. Then We have given you, [O Muhammad], a religion, so follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know [i.e., polytheists and disbelievers].
19. They will certainly be useless for you against Allah. And wrong-doers do support one another, and Allah is the Protector of the pious.
20. This [Quran] teaches people, and it is guidance and a mercy to those who believe with certainty.
21. Or do those who do evil deeds think that We shall make them equal to those who believe and do good deeds, in this life and the Hereafter? What a bad judgment they make!
22. And Allah has created the heavens and the earth with justice so that everyone will be recompensed for what he has earned, and they will never be wronged.
23. Have you seen him who has taken his own desire as his god? And Allah sent him astray after he had rejected the truth, and He sealed his hearing and his heart, and He put a cover on his sight. So who will guide Him after Allah? Why do you not remember?
24. And they [i.e., disbelievers] say, “It is only our worldly life [denying the Hereafter]. Some die and some live, and it is time that causes us to die.” But, in fact, they have no [certain] knowledge of that; they only follow their conjecture.
25. And when Our clear Verses [from The Quran] are recited to them [i.e., disbelievers], their only argument is to say, “Bring back our [dead] fathers to life, if you are truthful.”
26. Say [to disbelievers], “Allah is He Who gives you life, then He causes you to die, and then He will gather you [all] on the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. But most people do not know.”
27. And to Allah, the dominion of the heavens and the earth belongs. And when the Hour comes, the followers of falsehood will certainly lose.
28. And you will see each nation kneeling and humbled [in fear on the Day of Judgment]. Each nation will be called to its Record [of Deeds]. This Day you will be recompensed for what you used to do [in this life].
29. This is Our Record speaking about you with truth. We [i.e., Allah] were recording [through Our angels] what you used to do.
30. As for those who believe and do good deeds, their Lord will admit them to His Mercy [i.e., Paradise]. That will be the clear [i.e., real] success.
31. But as for those who disbelieve [in Allah], [it will be said to them,] “Were My Verses not recited to you? But you were arrogant, and you were criminals.”
32. And when it was said [to disbelievers], “The Promise of Allah is certainly true, and the Hour is undoubtedly coming,” you said, “We do not know what the Hour is. It is just a matter of conjecture, and we are not sure [of its coming].”
33. And the evil of what they did will appear to them [i.e., sinners] [on the Day of Resurrection], and what they used to mock at will surround them.
34. And it will be said [to them], “This Day We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day. And your abode is the Fire, and you will have no helpers.”
35. “That is because you took the Verses of Allah [in The Quran] in mockery, and you were deceived by the life of this world.” So this Day, they will not be taken out of it [i.e., the Fire], nor will they be given the chance to repent.
36. The praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the Lord of the earth, the Lord of the worlds.
37. And He has the sovereignty in the heavens and the earth. And He is the All- Exalted, the All-Wise.
3. We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them except with justice and for an appointed term. And those who disbelieve turn away from the Message conveyed to them.
4. Say, [O Muhammad, to polytheists], “Think about what you worship besides Allah. Show me what part of the earth they have created, or do they have a share in [the creation of] the heavens? Bring me a [revealed] Book before this [Quran] or a strong evidence [that orders you to worship idols or partners], if you are truthful.”
5. And who is more wrong than one who invokes besides Allah what does not answer him [like idols] until the Day of Resurrection, and they are [even] unaware of their invocation?
6. And when people are gathered [on the Day of Resurrection], they [i.e., the false gods] will be their enemies and will deny their worship.
7. And when Our clear Verses are recited to them [from The Quran], disbelievers say about the truth [i.e., The Quran] coming to them, “This is clear magic.”
8. Or they [i.e., disbelievers] say, “He has invented it.” Say, [O Muhammad], “If I have invented it, you cannot help me against Allah. He knows best what you say about it [i.e., The Quran]. Sufficient He is as a witness between you and me. And He is the Oft-Forgiver, the Most Merciful.”
9. Say, [O Muhammad, to disbelievers], “I am not the first Messenger [i.e., there were many before me]. And I do not know what is my end nor what is your end [in this life]. I only follow what is revealed to me, and I am only a plain Warner.”
10. Say, [O Muhammad, to disbelievers], “If it [i.e., The Quran] is from Allah and you disbelieve in it, [what will Allah do to you]? Although a witness from the people of Israel testifies that The Quran is from Allah [as prophesied in The Torah] and he has believed [in it], you are too arrogant [to believe].” Verily, Allah does not guide those who are wrong-doers.
11. And those who disbelieve [of the rich] say to those who believe [of the poor], “If The Quran had been something good, they would not have believed in it before us.” And if they are not guided by it [i.e., The Quran], they will say, “This is an ancient lie.”
12. And before this [i.e., The Quran] was the Scripture of Moses [sent] as a guide and a mercy. And this is a Book in Arabic [i.e. The Quran] that confirms [Scriptures before it], to warn wrong- doers and to be glad news to good-doers.
13. Verily, as for those who say, “Our Lord is Allah,” and then keep on the Straight Path [in their deeds], there will be no fear on them, nor shall they grieve.
14. Those will be the dwellers of Paradise, abiding there eternally, as a reward for what they used to do.
15. And We command man to be kind to his parents. His mother bears him with hardship and delivers him with hardship, and his bearing and his weaning takes thirty months. When he attains full strength and reaches [the age of] forty, he says, “O my Lord! Guide me to thank You for the Bounty which You have bestowed on me and on my parents, and to do good deeds that please You. And make my offspring good. Truly, I have returned to You [in repentance], and I am one of Muslims, [who submit to You].”
16. Those are they whose best deeds We shall accept and whose evil deeds We shall forgive. They will be among the dwellers of Paradise, the true promise which they were promised [in their worldly life].
17. But another says to his parents, “Fie upon you both! Do you promise that I shall be resurrected, whereas many generations before me have passed [without anyone being raised]?” When they both invoke Allah [rebuking their son], “Woe to you! Believe, for Allah’s Promise is certainly true,” he replies, “This is nothing but the tales of the ancient.”
18. Those [i.e., such people] are they against whom the Word [of punishment] has been justified among nations before them of jinn and mankind. They are [real] losers.
19. And for all, there will be degrees according to their deeds, and He will give them their recompense in full, and they will not be wronged.
20. And on the Day when disbelievers will be exposed to the Fire, [it will be said to them,] “You used up your good things in the worldly life and enjoyed them. This Day you will be recompensed with a humiliating torment for your unfair arrogance in the land and for your rebellion [against Allah].”
21. And remember [Hud], the brother of ’Ad, when he warned his people in Al- Ahqaf [i.e., sand hills in the south of the Arabian Peninsula]. And there were [many] Warners before and after him [saying], “Do not worship anyone except Allah. I do fear for you the torment of a great day.”
22. They said, “Have you come to turn us away from our gods? Then bring us what you promise us, if you are truthful,” [hastening their punishment, in challenge].
23. Hud said, “Truly, the knowledge [of the time of your punishment] is only with Allah. And I only convey to you what I have been sent with, but I see that you are ignorant.”
24. When they saw a thick cloud coming toward their valleys, they said, “This is a cloud bringing rain to us.” No, it is what you hastened: a wind with a painful torment,
25. Destroying everything by the Command of its Lord. So nothing could be seen there except their [empty] houses. Such is the recompense of those who are criminals.
26. And We had given power [i.e., wealth and children] to them [i.e., previous nations] more than We gave you [i.e., Arab pagans at the time of Muhammad], and We granted them hearing, seeing, and hearts. But their hearing, seeing, and hearts were of no help to them, for they denied the Signs of Allah, and thus they were surrounded by what they used to mock at.
27. And We did destroy the towns [such as those of ’Ad, Thamud, Saba’] around you [i.e., the people of Makkah]. And We have made the Signs clear so that they may return [to the Right Path].
28. Did the gods that they had taken as partners besides Allah, as a means of approach to Him, help them? No, they let them down [when they were most needed]. That is their lie and what they used to invent [against Allah].
29. And [remember] when We sent you, [O Muhammad], a group of jinn listening to The Quran. When they were there, they said [to one another], “Listen.” When it was over, they returned to their community, warning them.
30. They [i.e., the jinn] said, “O our people! We have heard a [revealed] Book sent down after Moses, confirming what came before it, guiding to the truth and to the Straight Path.”
31. “O our people! Answer the Caller to Allah [i.e., Messenger Muhammad], and believe in him so that Allah will forgive you of your sins and save you from a painful torment.”
32. And whoever does not answer the Caller to Allah, he cannot escape in the land, and he has no protector besides Him. Those are in utter error .
33. Do they [i.e., disbelievers] not see that Allah, Who has created the heavens and the earth without being tired of their creation, is Able to give life to the dead? Yes, He is Able to do everything.
34. And on the Day when disbelievers will be exposed to the Fire, [it will be said to them,] “Is this not the truth [which you used to deny]?” They will reply, “Yes, by our Lord.” He will say, “Then taste the torture for your disbelief.”
35. Thus, be patient, [O Muhammad], as Messengers of strong will [i.e., Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad] were patient [with disbelievers], and do not hasten punishment [from Allah] for them. When they see the torment [on the Day of Judgment], they will feel that their stay [in this world] was not more than one hour. [This Quran is] a clear Message. Will anyone be destroyed except those who are rebellious [against Allah]?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. As for those who disbelieve and hinder people from the Path of Allah, He will make their deeds in vain.
2. And as for those who believe, do good deeds, and believe in what has been revealed to Muhammad, which is the truth from their Lord, He will expiate from them their sins and make them feel happy and secure.
3. That is because disbelievers have followed falsehood and believers have followed the truth from their Lord. Thus Allah sets examples for people.
4. If you, [O Muslims], meet [in the battle] those who disbelieve, kill them. When you kill many of them, then you can take captives of them, whom you either set free without a ransom or with a ransom. This is what you should follow until the war is over. Had Allah willed, He [by Himself] would have conquered them [i.e., disbelievers] [without you], but He wants to test you. As for those killed in the Way of Allah, He will not make their deeds lost.
5. He will guide them and make them happy,
6. And He will admit them to Paradise, with each informed where his home [in Paradise] will be.
7. O you who believe! If you help [in the Way of Allah], He will help you and will make firm your foothold.
8. As for those who disbelieve, distress will be theirs, and He will make their deeds in vain.
9. That is because they hate what Allah has revealed, so He has made their deeds useless.
10. Have they [i.e., disbelievers] not traveled around through the land and seen what was the end of those before them? Allah destroyed them, and disbelievers [always] have the same end.
11. That is because Allah is the Protector of those who believe, and disbelievers have no protector.
12. Verily, Allah will admit those who believe and do good deeds to Gardens under which rivers flow [in Paradise]. As for disbelievers, they enjoy themselves and eat like cattle [in this worldly life], but the Fire will be their home [in the Hereafter].
13. And many a town that was much stronger than your town [i.e., Makkah] which has driven you out, We did destroy, and they had no helper.
14. Is he who knows well what his Lord expects from him like one whose evil deeds are made fair- seeming to him and who follows his own desires?
15. Paradise, which has been promised for the pious, has rivers of pure water, the taste of which never changes. It also has rivers of wine delicious to drinkers. It also has rivers of pure honey. And they [i.e., the dwellers of Paradise] have all kinds of fruits and forgiveness from their Lord [as well]. [Is he who dwells in Paradise] like him who abides eternally in the Fire, drinking boiling water that cuts up his bowels?
16. And some of them [i.e., hypocrites] listen to you [i.e., Muhammad]. But when they leave, they ask those of knowledge [i.e., your companions], “What has he said?” Those are men whose hearts Allah has sealed, and they follow their own evil desires.
17. As for those who are guided, Allah has increased their guidance and their piety.
18. Do they [i.e., disbelievers] wait but for the Hour to come to them suddenly? Some of its indicators have actually come. How can they remember when it comes to them?
19. So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no god but Allah, and ask Him to forgive you, male believers and female believers. And Allah knows what you all do [in this worldly life] and knows all your abodes [in the Hereafter].
20. And those who believe say, “Why is a chapter not revealed [to command believers to fight in the Way of Allah]?” When a clear chapter [of The Quran] was revealed and the holy fighting was mentioned [in it], you see those with a disease in their hearts looking at you as if they were fainting to death [i.e., fearing to fight]. It is better for them,
21. To obey and say good words. And when the battle is decided on, it will be better for them to be true to Allah [i.e., fight bravely and sincerely].
22. Will you then, if you turn away [from the holy fight], do mischief in the land and sever your ties with kinship [as you did before your Islam]?
23. Such [people] are those whom Allah has cursed, and thus He has made them deaf and has blinded their eyes.
24. Do they [i.e., disbelievers] not think deep of The Quran or are their hearts unable to understand?
25. Verily, as for those who have turned back to disbelief after guidance [i.e., Islam] has been so clear to them, Satan has made disbelief so fair-seeming to them and has deceived them.
26. That is because they said to those who hate what Allah has revealed, “We will obey you in part of the matter.” And Allah knows what they conceal.
27. What will they do when the angels take their souls at the moment of death, beating their faces and backs?
28. That is because they followed what angered Allah and they hated to please Him, so He made their deeds useless.
29. Or do those with a disease in their hearts [i.e., hypocrites] think that Allah will not bring out their hidden grudge?
30. And if We had willed, We could have shown them to you, [O Muhammad], and thus you could have known them by their [face] features. And you will know them by their speech tone. And Allah knows all your deeds.
31. And We will test you in order that We see those among you who fight in the Way of Allah and those who are patient, and in order that We observe your behavior.
32. Verily, those who disbelieve and hinder others from the Way of Allah and oppose the Messenger after guidance is made clear to them will not harm Allah in the least, and He will make their deeds useless.
33. O you who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger [i.e., Muhammad], and do not make your deeds vain [by committing major sins].
34. Truly, as for those who disbelieve and hinder [people] from the Way of Allah and then die while still in disbelief, Allah will not forgive them.
35. So do not weaken [before your enemy], and do not call for peace while you are stronger. And Allah is with you, and He will not decrease your reward for your deeds.
36. Truly, the life of this world is nothing but play and fun. And if you believe and fear [Him], He will give you your rewards, and He will not ask you your wealth [in return].
37. If He were to ask you of it [your wealth] and pressure you, you would withhold and bring your grudge out.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Verily, We have given you, [O Muhammad], a clear victory
2. So that Allah will forgive you your sins of the past and of the future, and He will complete His Grace on you, and He will guide you to the Straight Path,
3. And He will grant you a great victory.
4. Allah is He Who sent down calmness into the believers’ hearts so as to add faith to their faith. And to Allah belong the hosts of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is the All-Knower, the All-Wise.
5. [It is so] in order that He will admit male believers and female believers into Gardens under which rivers flow [i.e., Paradise] abiding there forever, and in order that He will expiate from them their sins. And that is with Allah the great success.
6. And [it is so] in order that He will punish male hypocrites, female hypocrites, male polytheists, and female polytheists, who have evil thoughts about Allah [i.e., about His judgment]. For them there will be a painful torment. Allah is angry with them, and He has cursed them, and He has prepared Hell for them. And what an evil end it is!
7. And to Allah belong the hosts of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is the All-Exalted, the All- wise.
8. Truly, we have sent you, [O Muhammad], as a witness, a bearer of glad news [i.e., of Paradise], and a Warner [of the Fire],
9. In order that you all believe in Allah and His Messenger, magnify Him, honor Him, and glorify Him in the morning and in the evening.
10. Truly, as for those who give pledge to you, [O Muhammad], they actually give pledge to Allah. The Hand of Allah is over theirs. Whoever breaks his pledge, he does so against himself. And whoever fulfils his pledge, Allah will give him a great reward.
11. Those bedouins who lagged behind [i.e., did not go with the Messenger to the battle] will say to you, [O Muhammad], “Our possessions and families have occupied us, so ask Allah to forgive us.” They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts. Say to them, “Who can intervene with Allah on your behalf if He intends to harm or benefit you?” Allah is All- Aware of what you do.
12. You [i.e., those bedouins] thought that the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families [i.e., be killed at the battle]. And that was made fair-seeming in your hearts, and you had evil thoughts [about Muslims], and you were, indeed, corrupted.
13. And whoever does not believe in Allah and His Messenger [i.e., Muhammad], We have actually prepared for disbelievers a Blazing Fire.
14. And to Allah is the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He forgives whomever He wills, and He punishes whomever He wills. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
15. Those who lagged behind will say when you go to get the spoils, “Let us go with you,” meaning to change the Word of Allah [by discouraging Muslim fighters]. Say [to them], “You will never go with us. This is what Allah has already said.” They will say, “You only envy us.” No, you understand only a little.
16. Say, [O Muhammad], to those bedouins who lagged behind, “You will be called to fight against a people very skilled at war or they embrace Islam [without war]. If you obey, Allah will give you a good reward. And if you turn away as you did before, He will make you taste a painful torment.”
17. No blame is on the blind [if they do not go to fight], nor is there blame on the lame or the sick. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He will admit him to Gardens under which rivers flow. And whoever turns away, He will punish him with a painful torture.
18. Allah is pleased with the believers who have given you, [O Muhammad], the pledge under the tree, [called the Radwan Pledge]. Allah has known what is in their hearts [of sincerity and truthfulness]. So He sent down calmness upon them and rewarded them with a near victory [at Khaybar and Makkah],
19. And a lot of spoils to get. And Allah is All-Exalted, All-Wise.
20. Allah has promised you a lot of spoils to get [from your enemies]. So He has hastened this for you [i.e., Al- Hudaybiyya Treaty], where He protected you [i.e., Muslims from your enemies], so that it may be a Sign for believers and may guide you to the Right Path.
21. And there are other victories you cannot attain [without Allah’s help], but Allah has made them possible for you. And Allah is Able to do everything.
22. And if those who disbelieve had fought against you, they would have fled away, finding no protector or helper.
23. That is the Way of Allah in the past, and you will find no change in the Way of Allah [i.e., the victory of believers over disbelievers].
24. And He is the One Who has set their hands away from you and your hands away from them in the middle of Makkah [on the Day of Al- Hudaybiyya] after He made you victorious over them. And Allah is the All-Seer of what you do.
25. They [i.e., the Arab pagans] Are the ones who disbelieved and turned you [i.e., Muslims] away from the Holy Mosque [at Makkah] and prevented the sacrifice animals from reaching the place of sacrifice. And had there not been believing men and believing women whom you did not know [and who live among disbelievers and embrace Islam secretly], lest you should kill them and thus commit a sin unknowingly, so that Allah might admit to His Mercy whomever He wills, and had disbelievers separated themselves [from believers], We would have punished those who disbelieved with a painful torment.
26. When disbelievers had put in their own hearts the arrogance of the Pre-Islamic Period, Allah sent down calmness on His Messenger and on believers and made them stick to the Word of piety [i.e., there is no god but Allah], and they are more entitled to it than anyone else. And Allah is the All-Knower of everything.
27. Allah shall truly fulfill the vision of His Messenger. You [i.e., Muslims] will certainly enter the Holy Mosque [at Makkah], if Allah wills, in security, some with heads shaved and some with head hair cut short, having no fear [from disbelievers]. He [i.e., Allah] knew what you did not know, and He granted you besides that a near victory [i.e., conquering your enemies at Khaybar].
28. He is the One Who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth in order to make it victorious over all other religions. And Allah is Sufficient as a Witness.
29. Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are severe against disbelievers and merciful to one another. You often see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking the bounty and pleasure of Allah. The mark of piety is on their faces because of their prostration [in prayer]. They are described as such in The Torah and The Gospel. They are like a seed sending out its shoot, becoming stronger and thicker. Then it stands straight on its stem, giving delight to sowers, but enraging disbelievers. Allah has promised those of them [i.e., the Messenger’s companions] who believe and do good deeds forgiveness and a great reward [i.e., Paradise].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. O you who believe! Do not make decisions in advance before Allah and His Messenger, and fear Allah. Allah is All-Hearing, All- Knowing, indeed.
2. O you who believe! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet [i.e., Muhammad], and do not speak to him as loudly as you speak to one another, lest your deeds should be made useless with you not feeling.
3. Truly, as for those who lower their voices in the presence of Allah’s Messenger, Allah has tested their hearts for piety. For them there will be forgiveness and a great reward [from Allah].
4. Verily, most of those who call you, [O Muhammad], [so loudly] from behind the chambers do not have sense [i.e., not polite enough].
5. Had they been patient until you could go out to them, that would have been much better for them. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
6. O you who believe! If an evil person comes to you with any news, make sure of it, lest you should harm people out of ignorance and thus become regretful for what you have done.
7. And know that the Messenger of Allah [i.e., Muhammad] is among you [, so honor him]. And if he obeys you in many matters, you will be in trouble. But Allah has made you love faith and has beautified it in your hearts, and He has made you hate disbelief, rebellion, and disobedience. Such are those who are really guided.
8. [That is] a Grace from Allah and a Favor. And Allah is All- Knowing, All-Wise.
9. And if two parties of believers fight against each other, then make peace between both of them. But if one of them makes aggression against the other, then fight against the one that transgresses until it goes back to the Command of Allah. If it goes back, then make peace between both of them in justice. Truly, Allah loves those who are just.
10. Believers are really brothers, so make peace between your brothers, and fear Allah so that you may receive His Mercy.
11. O you who believe! No one of you should mock at any other one, for the latter may be better than the former. And no woman should mock at any other woman, for the latter may be better than the former. And do not defame other people, and nor insult one another by nicknames. It is so bad to nickname a believer as a sinner after his faith. And whoever does not repent is a wrong-doer.
12. O you who believe! Avoid a lot of suspicion, for some suspicions are sins. And do not spy at one another, nor backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? As you hate this, you have to hate backbiting. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah accepts repentance, and He is the Most Merciful.
13. O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female [i.e., Adam and Eve]. And We have made you peoples and tribes so that you may know one another. The most honorable of you with Allah is the most pious. Verily, Allah is All- Knowing, All-Aware.
14. The Bedouins say, “We believe.” Say, [O Muhammad], [to them], “You have not believed yet, but say, ‘We are Muslims,’ for faith has not entered your hearts yet. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not decrease anything from your reward for your deeds. Verily, Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
15. The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, and then they have no doubt [in their hearts] and strive with their wealth and their lives in the Way of Allah. Those are the truthful [in their faith].
16. Say, [O Muhammad], “Do you inform Allah of your [degree of] religion, while Allah knows what is in the heavens and in the earth? And Allah is the All-Knower of everything.”
17. They consider it a favor to you, [O Muhammad], that they have embraced Islam. Say, “Do not consider your embracing Islam as a favor to me. No, but Allah has favored you by guiding you to faith, if you are truthful.”
18. Truly, Allah knows the Unseen of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is the All-Seer of what you do.
