In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. One asked about a torment to come [in the Hereafter],
2. [Prepared] for disbelievers, inevitable and unavoidable,
3. [Coming] from Allah, the Lord of the Ways of Ascent.
4. Angels and Gabriel ascend to Him in a Day, the estimate of which is fifty thousand years.
5. So be patient, [O Muhammad], and show a good patience [with disbelievers and their harm to you].
6. They [i.e., disbelievers] see it [i.e., the torment] far,
7. But We see it near,
8. On the Day when the sky will be like boiling oil,
9. And mountains will be like wool flakes,
10. And no friend will care to ask about a friend,
11. Although they will be made to see one another [in the Hereafter]. A criminal [then and there] would desire to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his sons,
12. And by his wife and his brother,
13. And by his tribe to whom he belongs,
14. And by all those on the earth, so that he may be saved.
15. No, [he may not]. Verily, it will be the Fire,
16. That takes away the head skin,
17. And calls [to itself] those who turned away [from Islam],
18. And those who collected [wealth] and spent nothing [in the Cause of Allah].
19. Man was created very impatient.
20. If touched by evil, he becomes desperate.
21. And if touched by good, he becomes a miser,
22. Except those who perform prayer,
23. Constantly and regularly on time,
24. And those in whose wealth there is a due right,
25. For the beggar and the deprived.
26. And those who believe in the Day of Recompense,
27. And those who are afraid of the torment of their Lord,
28. [For] no one can feel secure about the torment of his Lord,
29. And those who guard their own chastity,
30. Except with their wives and women slaves possessed by them, for whom they are not to be blamed;
31. And whoever goes beyond that, they are transgressors.
32. And those who keep their trusts and covenants,
33. And those who perform their testimonies honestly,
34. And those who keep their prayers,
35. All those shall be honored in the Gardens [i.e., Paradise].
36. So what is about those who disbelieve, turning away from you, [O Muhammad],
37. Scattered on the right and on the left?
38. Does everyone of them hope to enter the Garden of Delight [i.e., Paradise]?
39. No, [they will not enter it].We, indeed, have created them from what they know [i.e., a drop of semen].
40. I swear by the Lord of the points of sunrise and the points of sunset that We are really Able
41. To replace them with others better than they, and no one can outrun us.
42. So leave them in their disbelief and vain talk until they meet their Day which they were promised,
43. The Day when they will come out of their graves quickly as if they were running to a goal,
44. With their eyes lowered in fear and with them taken by humiliation. That is the Day which they were promised.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Verily, We sent Noah to his people [saying], “Warn your people before a painful torment comes to them.”
2. He said, “O my people! I am a plain Warner to you,”
3. “That you should worship Allah, fear Him, and obey me.”
4. “[If you do so,] He will forgive your sins and delay you to an appointed term [i.e., death]. Truly, if the term of Allah comes, it cannot be delayed if you but knew.”
5. He said, “O my Lord! I have called to my people night and day [to worship you],”
6. “But my call has caused them to turn away [farther and farther from the Right Path].”
7. “And whenever I call to them so that You will forgive them, they refuse to listen and cover themselves with their own garments, and they insist [on disbelief] so arrogantly.”
8. “Then I called to them in public,”
9. “Then I called to them aloud and in private.”
10. “And I said to them. ‘Ask your Lord to forgive you. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving.’
11. ‘[If you do so,] He will send you rain abundantly,’
12. ‘And He will provide you with wealth and children and grant you gardens and rivers.’ ”
13. Why do you not glorify Allah as you should,
14. Whereas He has created you in stages?
15. Do you not see how Allah has created seven heavens one above the other?
16. And He has made the moon a light in them and the sun a lamp.
17. And Allah has brought you out from the earth,
18. Then He will return you into it [upon death] and will bring you out [on the Day of Resurrection].
19. And Allah has made the land so extended for you
20. So that you may find wide roads in it.
21. Noah said, “My Lord! They [i.e., my people] have disobeyed me and followed one whose wealth and children have increased his loss [i.e., disobedience].”
22. “And they have planned great plots [against me].”
23. And they have said [to one another], “You must not leave your own gods, nor must you leave Wad, Suwa’, Yaghuth, Ya’uq, or Nasr [i.e., names of their own idols].”
24. “And they [such idols] have led many people astray. [O my Lord,] do not give increase to wrong-doers except in their error.”
25. Because of their sins, they [i.e., Noah’s people] were drowned and were made to enter the Fire, and they had no helpers instead of Allah.
26. And Noah said, “O my Lord! Do not leave any disbeliever on the earth.”
27. “If you leave any [disbelievers], they will mislead people, and they will have sinful disbelieving children.”
28. “O my Lord! Forgive me, my parents, him who enters my home as a believer, believing men, and believing women. And grant wrong-doers no increase except in destruction.”
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Say, [O Muhammad], “It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn listened [to this Quran] and then they said, ‘We have heard the wonderful Quran,’
2. ‘Which guides to the Right Path, so we have believed in it, and we will never take partners with our Lord.’
3. ‘[And we believe] that He, Glory is to our Lord, has taken neither a wife nor a son.’
4. ‘[And we know] that the foolish among us used to lie against Allah.’
5. ‘And we thought that neither men nor jinn would invent lies against Allah.’
6. ‘And some men of mankind used to seek shelter with males of jinn, who thus increased their fear.’
7. ‘And they thought, as you did, that Allah will not send any [Messenger].’
8. ‘And we [i.e., the jinn] have searched into the heaven, but we have found it filled with tough guards [i.e., angels] and flaming fires.’
9. ‘And we used to sit there [i.e., in the heaven] in places to steal a hearing, but now whoever does so will find a flaming fire in ambush for him.’
10. ‘And we do not know whether something evil is intended for those on the earth or their Lord intends to guide them.’
11. ‘And there are among us those who are righteous and some who are not so; we were of different ways.’
12. ‘And we know that we cannot escape the punishment of Allah on the earth, nor can we escape by running away from Him.’
13. ‘And truly when we heard the Guidance [i.e., The Quran], we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord should fear no decrease [in his reward] or an increase in his punishment [for his sins].’
14. ‘And some of us are Muslims and some are disbelievers. Thus, whoever submits [to Allah] has chosen the Right Path.’ ”
15. As for disbelievers, they shall be the firewood of Hell.
16. And if they [i.e., disbelievers] had been on the Right Path [i.e., Islam], We would have granted them water abundantly
17. In order that We test them. And whoever turns away from the Reminder of his Lord [i.e., The Quran], We will punish him severely.
18. Mosques are for Allah [alone], so do not invoke anyone with Allah.
19. And when Allah’s slave [i.e., Muhammad] stood up worshipping Allah, they made a dense crowd around him.
20. Say, [O Muhammad], “I do worship my Lord [alone], and I take no partners with Him.”
21. Say, “Truly, I have no power to bring harm on you or guidance [for you].”
22. Say, “And no one can protect me from Allah [if I disobey Him], and I will find no refuge except in Him.”
23. “[My only choice is] to convey [the truth] from Allah and His Messages. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger [i.e., Muhammad], his [abode] will be the Fire of Hell, dwelling in there forever.”
24. When they [i.e., disbelievers] see what they are promised of [on the Day of Resurrection], then they will come to know who is weaker in helpers and less in numbers [i.e., believers or disbelievers].
25. Say, [O Muhammad], “I do not know whether what you are promised of [i.e., the Hour] is near or my Lord will make it far in time.”
26. [He is] the All-Knower of the Unseen, so He does not reveal His Unseen to anyone,
27. Except those whom He chooses of [human] Messengers, and then He assigns guards [of angels] before them and behind them,
28. So as to know that they [i.e., the Messengers] have conveyed the Messages of their Lord. And He knows all that they have and knows the exact number of everything.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. O you wrapped in garments [i.e., Prophet Muhammad]!
2. Stand in prayer all night, except a little,
3. Half of it, or a little less than that,
4. Or a little more. And recite The Quran aloud, slowly, and carefully.
5. Verily, We will send down to you [i.e., Muhammad] weighty Words [i.e., obligations and legislation].
6. Prayer by night does lead to more submission [to Allah] and more understanding [than that of the day].
7. Truly, by day you have time long enough for ordinary duties.
8. And mention the Name of your Lord, and worship Him sincerely.
9. [He is] the Lord of the east and the west. There is no god but Him, so put your trust in Him.
10. And be patient, [O Muhammad], with what they [i.e., disbelievers] say, and keep away from them in a nice way.
11. And leave Me alone with those wealthy beliars, and give them a little while.
12. Verily, with Us there are fetters [to chain them] and the Burning Fire,
13. And a food that chokes and a painful torment,
14. On the Day when the earth and mountains will shake violently and mountains will be heaps of sand.
15. We have, indeed, sent you a Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] to be a witness over you, as We sent a Messenger [i.e., Moses] to Pharaoh.
16. But Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger, so We seized him with a great punishment.
17. How then can you protect yourselves, if you disbelieve, against a Day which will make children grey-headed?
18. The heaven will be split because of [the horror of] that Day. His Promise will certainly be fulfilled.
19. This is a Reminder, so take the Right Path [leading] to your Lord, if you choose to do so.
20. Verily, your Lord knows that you [i.e., Muhammad] and a party of those with you stand in prayer by night a little less than two thirds of the night, or half of it, or one third of it. And Allah measures the night and the day. He knows that you cannot pray most of the night, so He has made it easier for you. Therefore, pray in the night [voluntarily] as much as you choose. He knows that there will be, among you [i.e., Muslims], some who are sick, and some traveling in the land seeking the Bounty of Allah, and some others fighting in the Cause of Allah. So stand in prayer [by night] reciting of The Quran as long as it is easy [for you]. And perform prayer [i.e., the five prayers], and pay zakat, and lend Allah a good loan [i.e., give in charity]. And whatever good you send before you for yourselves, you will find it with Allah [on the Day of Judgment] better and greater in reward. And ask Allah to forgive you. Truly, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. O you [i.e., Muhammad] enveloped in garments,
2. Get up and warn [people]!
3. And glorify your Lord! 4. And purify your clothes!
5. And keep away from idols!
6. And do not give in order to be given more!
7. And be patient for the sake of your Lord!
8. When the Trumpet is blown,
9. That will be a hard Day,
10. Not easy for disbelievers.
11. Leave Me with him whom I created alone [i.e., a chief of disbelievers named Al-Waleed Ibn Al-Mugheerah],
12. And I provided him with a lot of wealth,
13. And many children around him,
14. And made life so comfortable for him,
15. And yet he desires that I grant him more and more.
16. No. He has certainly been so rebellious against Our Verses.
17. I will expose him to a continuous torment.
18. He [Al-Waleed] thought [about The Quran] and thought deep.
19. Let him be cursed! What kind of thought has he had?
20. And once more, let him be cursed! What kind of thought has he had?
21. Then he thought [again about The Quran],
22. Then he frowned and showed hatred,
23. Then he turned back and was so arrogant.
24. Then he said [falsely about The Quran], “This is not but magic narrated for a long time.”
25. “This is not but the word of humans.”
26. I [i.e., Allah] will throw him in the Fire.
27. And do you know what the Fire is?
28. It will not spare anyone [of disbelievers].
29. It will burn their skins,
30. Guarded by nineteen [angels].
31. And We have set angels to be the guards of the Fire, and We have fixed their number [as nineteen] only to test those who have disbelieved, and so that those given the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] may become certain [that The Quran is Allah’s Word, since the same number is mentioned in their Scripture], and so that believers’ faith may become stronger, and so that those given the Scripture and believers may have no doubt [about The Quran], and so that those with diseased hearts [i.e., hypocrites] and disbelievers may say, “What does Allah intend by giving such an example?” Thus Allah makes astray whoever wills, and He guides whoever wills. And no one knows the hosts [i.e., angels] of your Lord expect Him. And it [i.e., the Fire] is a warning to people.
32. No. By the moon,
33. And by the night when it turns away,
34. And by the dawn when it shows up,
35. It [i.e., Hell] is one of the great Signs,
36. A warning to people,
37. To anyone who chooses to proceed forward [by doing good] or retreat behind [by doing evil].
38. Every person is responsible for whatever he earns.
39. As for those on the Right,
40. They are in Gardens [i.e., Paradise] asking
41. About the criminals [in Hell],
42. “Why are you in Hell?”
43. They will say, “We were not among those who used to pray,”
44. “And we used not to feed the poor,”
45. “And we used to talk about what we did not know,”
46. “And we used to deny the Day of Recompense,”
47. “Until death came to us.”
48. [With them being so,] no intercession can be of use to them.
49. Why do they turn away from advice,
50. As if they were wild donkeys,
51. Running away from a lion?
52. Everyone of them [i.e., disbelievers] desires to receive pages [from Allah certifying the Prophethood of Muhammad].
53. No. They do not fear the Last Day.
54. No. Verily, it [i.e., The Quran] is a Reminder.
55. So whoever wills, let him read it [to learn from it].
56. And they learn from it only when Allah wills. He is the One Who deserves to be feared [by people] and the One Who forgives.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. I swear by the Day of Resurrection,
2. And I swear by the self- reproaching psyche [of the believer].
3. Does man [i.e., the disbeliever] think that We shall not put his bones together [on Resurrection]?
4. Yes, [We will resurrect him]. And We are able to make all finger prints the same.
5. Man [i.e., the disbeliever] desires to commit sins on and on.
6. He asks [in mockery], “When is the Day of Resurrection?”
7. When the sight is dazzled [on the Day of Resurrection],
8. And the moon is eclipsed,
9. And the sun and the moon are joined together,
10. Man then will say, “Where is the refuge to escape to?”
11. No, there is no refuge.
12. To your Lord is the Return that Day,
13. When man will be informed of all his deeds,
14. And he will be a witness against himself,
15. Even though he may start offering excuses [for his evil deeds].
16. Do not repeat it [i.e., The Quran][with Gabriel], hastening with it;
17. It is for Us [i.e., Allah] to collect it [in your heart], [O Muhammad], and let you recite it then.
18. When We have recited it to you [through Gabriel], then recite it as he has done.
19. Then it is for Us to explain it [i.e., The Quran][to you].
20. No. You [i.e., disbelievers] love this life of this world,
21. And you ignore the Hereafter.
22. On that Day, there will be shining [i.e., happy] faces [of believers],
23. Looking at their Lord [i.e., Allah].
24. And there will be gloomy faces on that Day,
25. Expecting that an evil is about to befall them.
26. When the soul reaches the throat [upon death],
27. And when it is said, “Who can cure him [and save him from death]?”
28. And when he [the dying person] knows it to be death,
29. And when one leg joins the other [upon shrouding],
30. To your Lord is then the Return.
31. He [i.e., a disbeliever] did not believe [in Allah], and nor did he pray [to Him],
32. But he belied [The Quran] and turned away [from Islam],
33. And then he went to his family walking in conceit.
34. Instead, you [i.e., disbelievers] should have obeyed [Allah]; you should have obeyed.
35. You should have obeyed; you should have obeyed.
36. Does man think that he will be left [without obligations ordained to him by Allah]?
37. Was he not a discharge of semen?
38. Then he became a clot, which He [i.e., Allah] then shaped and fashioned [in the proper way].
39. And he made of him the two sexes: male and female.
40. Is the One [Who does all that] not Able to give life to the dead?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Has there not been a time when man was nothing worthy mentioning [i.e., when he was an embryo]?
2. Truly, We have created man from mixed drops [of a husband and a wife] in order to test him, and, thus, We made him hear and see [i.e., able to obey or disobey].
3. Verily, We [i.e., Allah] have shown him [i.e., man] the Right Path, and it is up to him to be grateful or not [to Allah].
4. We have certainly prepared for disbelievers chains, fetters, and blazing flames of fire.
5. Truly, the pious shall drink from a cup so delicious and so cool, from a spring called Kafour,
6. From a spring of which the servants of Allah drink and cause it to gush out wherever they choose.
7. They [i.e., the pious] fulfill their vows and fear a Day, the evil of which will be so wide- spreading [i.e., the Day of Judgment].
8. And they give food [in charity], although they love it, to the needy, orphans, and captives,
9. [Saying,] “We feed you only for the sake of Allah. We do not want from you any reward or thanks.”
10. “We do fear from our Lord a hard severe Day.”
11. So Allah will save them from the evil of that Day, and grant them brightness [on their faces] and joy [in their hearts].
12. And He will reward them, for their patience, Paradise and silk garments,
13. Leaning in there [i.e., in Paradise] on raised thrones, where they feel no excessive heat or excessive cold.
14. The branches will be so close to them, and the fruit bunches will be so near.
15. And they [i.e., the pious in Paradise] will be served with silver vessels and crystal cups,
16. Made of silver, the measure of which properly fits the drinker.
17. And they will be made to drink a cup mixed with ginger,
18. From a spring called Salsabeel.
19. And they will be served by boys of permanent youth. If you see them, you think that they are scattered pearls.
20. And when you look and look there [in Paradise], you will see an unimaginable delight and a great dominion.
21. Their garments will be of fine green silk and glittering gowns. And they will be adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord will give them a pure drink.
22. [And it will be said to them,] “Verily, all this is your reward, and your deeds have been accepted and appreciated.”
23. Truly, it is We Who have sent down The Quran to you, [O Muhammad], by stages.
24. Thus, be patient with the Command of your Lord, and do not obey any sinner or disbeliever among them.
25. And remember the Name of your Lord in the morning and in the evening.
26. And during the night, prostrate yourself to Him, and glorify Him for a long time in the night.
27. Verily, these [disbelievers] love this life and ignore a heavy Day [i.e., the Day of Resurrection].
28. We created them and gave them strength. And if We will, We can completely replace them with others like them.
29. Truly, this [Chapter of The Quran] is a Reminder. So whoever wills can follow the Right Path to his Lord.
30. And you cannot will unless Allah wills. Verily, Allah is the All-Knower, the All-Wise.
31. He admits whomever He wills to His Mercy. And He has prepared a painful punishment for wrong-doers.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. By angels sent one after another,
2. And by winds blowing violently,
3. And by winds that scatter clouds,
4. And by the Verses of The Quran that clarify what is right and what is wrong,
5. And by angels that bring revelation [to Messengers],
6. To explain or to warn,
7. What you are promised [i.e., Resurrection] must surely come to pass.
8. When stars lose their light [on the Day of Resurrection],
9. And when the heaven is split,
10. And when mountains are blown up [and made to vanish],
11. And when Messengers are gathered,
12. To what Day are these Signs delayed?
13. To the Day of Sorting Out [i.e., when believers are separated from disbelievers].
14. And what is this Day of Sorting Out?
15. Woe then to beliars [of Revelation and Messengers]!
16. Did We not destroy those [disbelievers] of ancient generations?
17. We can do the same to later generations [of similar people].
18. Such is what We do to criminals.
19. Woe to beliars on that Day!
20. Did We not create you from a despised liquid [i.e., semen]?
21. Then We placed it in a safe place [i.e., the womb],
22. To an appointed period of time [i.e., birth].
23. And We made it all in the proper measure; We are the Best to measure.
24. Woe to beliars on that Day!
25. Have We not made the earth a receptacle,
26. For the dead [in it] and the living [on it]?
27. And We have placed on it firm high mountains, and We have caused you to drink sweet water.
28. Woe to beliars on that Day!
29. [It will be said to disbelievers,] “Go to what you used to deny [i.e., the Fire].”
30. “Go to a shadow [of Hell flames] of three columns,”
31. “Neither shady, nor does it protect against the flames [of the Fire].”
32. Verily, it [i.e., Hell] throws sparks like a huge piece of wood,
33. Like yellow pieces of brass.
34. Woe to beliars on that Day!
35. That will be the Day when they cannot speak,
36. Nor will they be allowed to offer excuses.
37. Woe to beliars on that Day!
38. That will be the Day of Decision. We will bring you and those before together.
39. If you have a plot [on that Day], then use it against Me [,a sarcastic challenge from Allah to disbelievers].
40. Woe to beliars on that Day!
41. The pious will certainly be in the middle of shades and springs,
42. And fruits which they desire.
43. [It will be said to them,] “Eat and drink happily as a reward for what you used to do.”
44. Truly, such is how We reward good-doers.
45. Woe to beliars on that Day!
46. Eat and enjoy yourselves a little [in this life, O disbelievers]. You are surely criminals.
47. Woe to beliars on that Day!
48. And when they [i.e., disbelievers] are told to bow down [in prayer], they refuse to do so.
49. Woe to beliars on that Day!
50. In what after this [i.e., The Quran] are they [i.e., disbelievers] going to believe?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. What are they asking [one another] about?
2. About the great news [i.e., Resurrection],
3. About which they disagree [i.e., believe or disbelieve].
4. No. They will come to know.
5. No, again. They will come to know.
6. Have We not made the earth comfortable [for people],
7. And mountains as pegs [to give stability to the earth]?
8. And We have created you in pairs [males and females].
9. And We have made your sleep a time for rest.
10. And We have made the night as a covering [of darkness].
11. And We have made the day a time for livelihood.
12. And We have built above you seven strong [heavens].
13. And We have made a shining lamp [i.e., the sun].
14. And We have sent down from rainy clouds abundant water,
15. So as to produce corn and vegetations,
16. And gardens growing thickly.
17. Verily, the Day of Decision [i.e., Resurrection] will be on a fixed time.
18. On that Day, the Trumpet will be blown, and you shall come in groups after groups,
19. And the heaven will be opened, and so will be its gates,
20. And mountains will be moved away becoming then a mirage.
21. Truly, Hell will be waiting,
22. As a dwelling place for transgressors,
23. Who will reside in there for a very long time,
24. Tasting nothing cool nor any drink,
25. Except hot water and dirty liquid,
26. As an exact recompense [for their sins].
27. Verily, they used not to expect any accountability [before Allah],
28. And they rejected Our Signs.
29. And We have recorded everything [of their deeds] in a Record,
30. So taste [the results of your evil deeds]. We will give you no increase except in punishment.
31. As for the pious, theirs shall be success [i.e., Paradise],
32. Gardens and vineyards,
33. And very beautiful maidens of equal age,
34. And a pure glass [of wine].
35. They will hear [there] no vain talk or lying.
36. [All that is] a reward from your Lord, granted according to their good deeds,
37. The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, the Most Gracious, to Whom they do not dare to speak,
38. On the Day when Gabriel and angels stand in rows, with no one daring to speak except one whom the Most Gracious [i.e., Allah] allows and who says what is right.
39. That is the True Day [i.e., of Resurrection]. So, let whoever wills take a way to his Lord [through good deeds].
40. We have actually warned you of a near punishment on the Day when one will see all that his hands have sent forward and when disbelievers will wish that they had been dust.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. By those [angles] who violently pull out the souls [of disbelievers],
2. And by those [angles] who gently take out the souls [of believers],
3. And by those that swim along [i.e., stars in their orbits],
4. And by those who are always the first [i.e., angles in their obedience to Allah],
5. And by those [angles] who carry out the Commands [of Allah].
6. On the Day when the earth will violently shake [right before Resurrection],
7. Followed by another blowing of the Trumpet [declaring Resurrection],
8. Hearts then will be afraid,
9. And eyes will be downcast.
10. They [i.e., disbelievers] say [denying Resurrection], “After we are buried in our graves, [shall we be resurrected],”
11. “Even when we become crumbled bones?”
12. They say, “If so, then we will be losers.”
13. It will be one single Shout,
14. And they will be [resurrected alive] on the surface of the earth.
15. Have you, [O Muhammad], known the story of Moses?
16. His Lord called him in the holy valley, Tuwa,
17. “Go to Pharaoh; he has gone beyond the limits.”
18. “And say to him ‘Would you purify yourself [by belief]?’
19. ‘Let me guide you to your Lord so that you may obey Him.’ ”
20. And Moses showed him [Pharaoh] the Great Sign,
21. But he belied and disobeyed,
22. Then he turned away to plot against faith,
23. Then he collected [his people] and cried aloud,
24. “I am your highest lord.”
25. So Allah seizes him with punishment in the Hereafter and the first life.
26. Truly, in this there is a lesson for whoever fears [Allah].
27. Are you [i.e., humans] more difficult to create or the heaven which He built?
28. He [i.e., Allah] has made it high and perfect.
29. He has made its night so dark and its day so bright.
30. After that He extended the earth,
31. And from it He brought out its water and pasture,
32. And He fixed firm its mountains,
33. So as to benefit you and your cattle.
34. When the Greatest Catastrophe [i.e., the Day of Resurrection] comes,
35. Then man will remember all that he has done,
36. And Hell-Fire shall be apparent to whoever sees.
37. As for him who transgressed,
38. And preferred the first life,
39. Hell-Fire will be his abode.
40. But as for him who feared standing before his Lord and avoided evil desires,
41. Verily, Paradise will be his abode.
42. They [i.e., people] ask you, [O Muhammad], about the Hour, “When will it be? ”
43. You have no knowledge about it.
44. Your Lord is the only One Who knows this.
45. You are only a Warner for those who fear it [i.e., the Hour, the Day of Resurrection].
46. When they see it [i.e., the Hour], they will feel that their life [in this world] was as short as an afternoon or a morning.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. He [i.e., Prophet Muhammad] frowned and turned away,
2. When a blind man [, an old believer,] came to him [while he was engaged in advising a rich disbeliever].
3. He [i.e., the blind man] might become pure,
4. Or remember and thus benefit from your advice.
5. As for that rich man,
6. Why do you pay a special attention to him [ignoring the blind man]?
7. You are not to blame if he does not become pure [i.e., does not believe].
8. As for that man [i.e., the blind one] who came to you eager to be advised,
9. With a heart filled with piety,
10. Why do you neglect him?
11. Indeed, it [i.e., this chapter of The Quran] is a Reminder.
12. Let whoever wills remember it.
13. [The Quran] is held in Honored Records,
14. Of high dignity and pure,
15. In the hands of angels,
16. So honorable and obedient.
17. Be cursed [the disbelieving] man! How ungrateful he is!
18. From what has He created him?
19. From a mixed drop [of semen] He created him and set in him the due proportions,
20. Then He makes easy his way out [from his mother],
21. Then He causes him to die and be buried,
22. Then He resurrects him when He wills.
23. Yet, man has not done [fully] what He has commanded him to do.
24. Let man look at his food [and see the bounties of Allah].
25. We send down water in abundance,
26. Then We split the soil [to make it absorb rain].
27. And We cause grain to grow in there,
28. And grapes and grass,
29. And olive-trees and date- palms,
30. And thick gardens,
31. And fruits and herbage,
32. A provision for you and your cattle.
33. Then when the Day of Resurrection comes,
34. Everyone flees from his brother,
35. And from his mother and father,
36. And from his wife and his sons,
37. [For] everyone then will be worried about his own fate.
38. On that Day the faces [of believers] will be bright,
39. Rejoicing and in delight.
40. But other faces, on that Day, will be stained with dust,
41. Covered with darkness;
42. Those are the evil-doing disbelievers.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. When the sun is wound round [and its light has gone, immediately before Resurrection],
2. And when stars are scattered,
3. And when mountains are caused to pass away,
4. And when rainy clouds are caused not to go ahead,
5. And when beasts are gathered [into death],
6. And when seas are caused to burn,
7. And when similar souls are classified together,
8. And when the female infant buried alive is asked
9. For what sin she was killed,
10. And when Records [of deeds] are given to people [in their right or left hands],
11. And when the heaven is taken away from its place,
12. And when Hell-Fire is prepared,
13. And when Paradise is made near,
14. [Then] everyone will know what he has brought [with him, of good or evil deeds].
15. I [i.e., Allah] swear by stars [that appear in the night],
16. That run in their orbits and disappear in the day,
17. And by the night as it comes,
18. And by the dawn as it approaches,
19. Truly, it [i.e., The Quran] is conveyed by an honorable messenger [i.e., Gabriel],
20. Of power and a high rank with the Owner of the Throne [i.e., Allah],
21. Obeyed and honest.
22. And, [O people], your companion [i.e., Muhammad] is not a madman.
23. And he saw him [i.e., Gabriel] in the clear horizon.
24. And he [i.e., Muhammad] does convey The Quran [, which has already been in the Unseen].
25. And it [i.e., The Quran] is not the word of a cursed devil.
26. So where are you going [away from The Quran]?
27. It [i.e., the Quran] is not but a Reminder to all,
28. [Especially] to whoever of you wills to be on the Straight Path.
29. And you cannot will unless Allah, the Lord of the worlds, wills.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Woe to those who give less in measure and weight,
2. Who ask for full measure when they buy,
3. And who give less measure or weight when they sell!
4. Do such people not think that they will be resurrected
5. On a Great Day,
6. When people stand before the Lord of the worlds?
7. Verily, the abode of evil- doers will be so narrow and miserable;
8. And how miserable it will be!
9. [That abode] has already been destined.
10. Woe, that Day, to those who belie [Messengers]
11. And who deny the Day of Recompense!
12. And no one can deny it except him who is a sinful transgressor.
13. If Our Verses are recited to him, he says, “Tales of ancient people.”
14. No. But their hearts are stained with the evil deed which they used to earn.
15. No. That Day they [i.e., evil-doers] will not be able to see their Lord,
16. Then they will surely taste Hell-Fire,
17. Then it will be said to them, “This is what you used to deny.”
18. No. The abode of the pious will verily be so high[in Paradise];
19. And how wonderful Paradise will be! 20. [That abode] has already been destined,
21. Witnessed by those near [to Allah, i.e., angels].
22. Verily, the pious will be in delight,
23. On thrones, looking [everywhere].
24. You will see on their faces the brightness of delight.
25. They will be given a drink of sealed wine,
26. The last of which will be musk. For such delight, let those who want to strive do strive.
27. And that wine will be mixed with tasneem,
28. A spring from which the pious will drink.
29. Verily, criminals [i.e., sinners and disbelievers] used to laugh at believers [in the worldly life];
30. And whenever they passed by them, they used to wink one to another [mocking at them];
31. And whenever they [i.e., disbelievers] returned to their own families, they returned in rejoice;
32. And whenever they [i.e., disbelievers] saw them [i.e., believers], they said, “These are really astray.”
33. And they [i.e., disbelievers] were not sent watchers over them.
34. But, this Day, those who believe laugh at disbelievers,
35. [Sitting] on thrones, looking all around.
36. Are disbelievers not fully paid for what they used to do?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Woe to those who give less in measure and weight,
2. Who ask for full measure when they buy,

34. But, this Day, those who believe laugh at disbelievers,
35. [Sitting] on thrones, looking all around.
36. Are disbelievers not fully paid for what they used to do?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. When the heaven is split [on the Day of Resurrection],
2. And thus it obeys its Lord, and it has to do so,
3. And when the earth is extended,
4. And throws out what it has [i.e., the dead] and gets rid [of them],
5. Thus obeying its Lord, and it has to do so,
6. You, O man, will return to your Lord and see your deeds [good or evil].
7. As for him who will be given his Record [of deeds] in his right hand,
8. He will receive an easy reckoning,
9. And will return to his family [in Paradise] in joy.
10. But as for him who will be given his Record [of deeds] [in his left hand] behind his back,
11. He will invoke [for his own] destruction,
12. And will taste the flame of Fire.
13. He was in joy among his family [in the worldly life],
14. Thinking that he would not return [to Allah].
15. Yes. Truly, his Lord was always watching him.
16. I [i.e., Allah] swear by the afterglow of sunset,
17. And by the night and what it gathers [in its darkness],
18. And by the moon when it is full,
19. You [i.e., humans] will change from state to state.
20. Why do they not believe?
21. And why do they not prostrate themselves when The Quran is recited to them?
22. Those disbelievers always belie,
23. And Allah knows best what they hide.
24. So bear the glad news to them of a painful torture.
25. But as for those who believe and do good deeds, theirs will be a permanent reward [i.e., Paradise].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. By the heaven with its stars,
2. And by the Promised Day [i.e., the Day of Resurrection],
3. And by the Witnessing Day [i.e., Friday] and the Witnessed Day [i.e., the Day of Arafath],
4. Cursed were the people of the Ditch [,who burned some believers alive],
5. Of the fire with its fuel,
6. When they were sitting by it,
7. Witnessing what they were doing against believers.
8. They [i.e., the people of the Ditch] were angry with them [i.e., believers] only because they had believed in Allah, the All- Exalted, Worthy of all Praise,
9. Who has the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And He is the Witness over everything.
10. Verily, those who killed male believers and female believers and did not repent, they will taste the torment of Hell and will have the punishment of the Blazing Fire.
11. Truly, those who believe and do good deeds will have Gardens, under which rivers flow. That is the great success.
12. The punishment of your Lord is severe, indeed.
13. It is He Who begins [creation] and repeats it [upon Resurrection].
14. And He is Oft-Forgiving and Loving [of the pious].
15. [He is] the Owner of the Throne, the Glorious,
16. And He is the Doer of whatever He wills.
17. Have you known the story of the hosts
18. Of Pharaoh and Thamud?
19. Disbelievers insist on denying [Islam],
20. And Allah encompasses them from behind [i.e., they cannot escape His punishment].
21. It is a Glorious Quran,
22. [Written] in the Preserved Record.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. By the heaven and the night-comer [i.e., the bright star].
2. And what is this night- comer?
3. [It is] the bright star.
4. Every person has a guard with him [i.e., an angel].
5. Let man see from what he is created.
6. He is created from gushing water,
7. Coming out from the backbone and the ribs.
8. He [i.e., Allah] is really able to resurrect him,
9. When secrets [i.e., words and deeds] are revealed,
10. When then he has no power [from within] and nor a helper [from outside].
11. By the sky that sends back [rain, heat, and radio waves],
12. And by the earth with its crack,
13. Truly, it [i.e., The Quran] is the true word [of Allah],
14. And it is no fun.
15. They [i.e., disbelievers] make plots [against believers],
16. And I [i.e., Allah] have my plans [too].
17. So give disbelievers a respite, only for a while.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High,
2. Who has created all and made them in the best shape,
3. And Who has set everything [in the right measure] and then has guided,
4. And Who has brought out grass,
5. And then He has turned it into changeable straw.
6. We shall make you, [O Muhammad], recite [The Quran] so that you will not forget [it],
7. Except what Allah may will. He knows what is revealed and what is concealed.
8. And We make doing good deeds easy for you.
9. Therefore, remind [people of piety], for reminding may be of benefit [to them].
10. Those who fear [Allah] will remember [this guidance],
11. But it will be avoided by the wicked,
12. Who will taste the Largest Fire,
13. Where they neither die nor live [a good life].
14. He who has purified himself [by obeying Allah] will achieve success,
15. And he has remembered the Name of his Lord and prayed [the five prayers].
16. You prefer the life of this world,
17. Whereas the Hereafter is better and more lasting.
18. Truly, such a [meaning] is [mentioned] in the previous Scriptures,
19. The Scriptures of Abraham and Moses.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Have you heard about the overwhelming event [i.e., the Day of Resurrection]?
2. On that Day, [some] faces will be humiliated,
3. Working hard [in this life], but disgraced [in the Hereafter].
4. They will taste the hot Fire,
5. And they will drink from a hot spring,
6. And their food will be nothing but a thorny bitter plant,
7. Which neither nourishes nor satisfies against hunger.
8. On that Day, [some other] faces will be in joy,
9. Satisfied with their [previous] deeds,
10. In a high Paradise,
11. Where you hear no vain talk.
12. In it there will be running springs.
13. In it there will be high- raised thrones,
14. And prepared cups,
15. And cushions in rows,
16. And fine carpets spread out.
17. Do they not look at camels and see how they are created?
18. And at the heaven and see how it is raised?
19. And at the mountains and see how they are set?
20. And at the earth and see how it is spread out?
21. So remind them, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder.
22. You are not a dictator over them.
23. As for him who turns away and disbelieves,
24. Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment.
25. To Us they shall certainly return,
26. And by Us their reckoning will be, indeed.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. By the dawn,
2. And by the ten nights [i.e., the first ten days of the month of Thu-Al-Hijjah],
3. And by the even day [i.e., the Day of Sacrifice] and the odd day [i.e., the Day of Arafah],
4. And by the night departing.
5. Are these oaths enough for men of understanding?
6. Have you not seen what your Lord did to ’Ad,
7. Iram [i.e., their town] of poles [for tents],
8. [A tribe] that had no parallel in the land?
9. And Thamud [i.e., a tribe], who used to cut rocks in the valley [to build their houses]?
10. And Pharaoh of stakes [,with which he used to torture people]?
11. Those transgressed in the land beyond the limits,
12. And they caused a lot of mischief in there.
13. So your Lord punished them severely.
14. Truly, your Lord is Ever Watchful [over people].
15. As for man, when his Lord tests him by giving him honor and bounties, he says, “My Lord has honored me.”
16. But when He tests him by straitening his provision, he says, “My Lord has humiliated me.”
17. No [, both are wrong]. [Some of] you do not treat the orphan kindly nor generously,
18. And you do not urge one another on feeding the poor,
19. And you take hold of the inheritance unjustly,
20. And you love wealth excessively.
21. No [, you should not do that]. When the earth is destroyed [on the Day of Resurrection],
22. And your Lord comes with angels in rows,
23. And Hell is brought that Day, man will remember [his sins] when remembrance is of no benefit to him.
24. He will say, “I wish that I had done good deeds for my life.”
25. On that Day, no one will punish [the wicked] as He will,
26. And no one will bind [the wicked] as the angels will.
27. [It will be said to the pious person,] “You who is internally secure!”
28. “Come back to your Lord well-pleased and well-pleasing,”
29. “And enter among My [honored] servants,”
30. “And enter my Paradise.”
