In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah].
2. And you [i.e., Muhammad] are allowed to punish the enemies of Islam in this city.
3. And by the parent and his offspring,
4. We have created man facing the troubles of life.
5. Does he think that no one can overcome him?
6. He says [in pride], “I have spent and wasted a lot of wealth.”
7. Does he think that no one sees him?
8. Have We not made for him two eyes,
9. And a tongue and two lips?
10. And We have shown him the two ways [i.e., good and evil].
11. Why does he not try to overcome the obstacle?
12. Do you know what this obstacle is?
13. He should free a slave,
14. Or feed on a day of hunger
15. An orphan who is a relative,
16. Or a very poor person,
17. And be one of those who believe and advise one another of patience and mercy.
18. Such people will be given their records in their right hands.
19. But those who deny Our Verses will be given their records in their left hands,
20. And they will be in the Fire with no escape for them.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. And by the sun and its light,
2. And by the moon to follow it [i.e., the sun],
3. And by the day to brighten it [i.e., the earth],
4. And by the night to come,
5. And by the heaven and Him Who built it,
6. And by the earth and Him Who spread it,
7. And by man and Him Who perfected his nature,
8. And showed him what is wrong and what is right,
9. He who purifies himself [by obeying Allah] succeeds,
10. And he who disobeys [Allah] fails.
11. [The people of] Thamud denied [their Prophet] and transgressed [beyond the limits],
12. When the most wicked man [among them] went out [intending to kill the she-camel].
13. So the Messenger of Allah [i.e., Salih] said [warning them], “Do not harm the she-camel of Allah, nor prevent it from its drink!”
14. But they rejected his words and killed it. Thus, their Lord became angry with them and destroyed them.
15. And he [i.e., the killer] does not fear the consequences of his misdeed.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. By the night when it covers [all],
2. And by the day when it brightens up,
3. And by what He created of males and females,
4. Verily, your deeds are different [in motives and purposes].
5. As for him who gives [in charity] and fears [Allah],
6. And believes in Paradise,
7. We will make it easy for him to go on the Right Path.
8. But as for him who is a miser and thinks that he can do without Allah,
9. And denies Paradise,
10. We will make it easy for him to go on the wrong path,
11. And his wealth will be of no benefit to him when he dies.
12. Truly, We [i.e., Allah] are to give guidance [to people],
13. And to Us the life and the Hereafter do belong.
14. And I have warned you against a Blazing Fire,
15. Not entered except by one who is wicked,
16. Who denies [Islam] and turns away [in disobedience].
17. But the pious person will be saved from it [i.e., the Fire],
18. Who gives of his wealth [in charity] seeking purification,
19. Not paying back for anyone’s favor,
20. Only seeking to please Allah, the Most High.
21. And he will be pleased [when he enters Paradise].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. By the forenoon,
2. And by the night when it darkens,
3. Your Lord has neither left you [i.e., Muhammad], nor has He hated you.
4. And the Hereafter is better for you than this life.
5. And your Lord will give you, and you will be pleased.
6. Did He not find you an orphan, and He gave you a refuge?
7. And He found you astray [i.e., not knowing faith], and He guided you.
8. And He found you poor, and He made you do [without people].
9. Therefore, you should not humiliate the orphan,
10. Nor should you be harsh with the beggar.
11. And talk about the Grace of Allah to you.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Have We not opened your heart, [O Muhammad], [for faith]?
2. And We have removed from you your burden,
3. Which was heavy for you, [by forgiveness].
4. And We have raised high your name.
5. Truly, with every hardship, relief will come.
6. Truly, with every hardship, relief will come.
7. When you finish your daily affairs, devote yourself to worship,
8. And to your Lord turn all your hopes.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. By the fig and the olive [i.e., Jerusalem, where Jesus received the Message from Allah],
2. And by Mount Sinai [,where Moses received the Message from Allah],
3. And by this secure city [i.e., Makkah, where Muhammad received the Message from Allah],
4. We created man in the best shape,
5. Then We turned him down to the lowest of the low [i.e., the Fire],
6. Except those who believe and do good deeds. They will have a permanent reward [i.e., Paradise].
7. What makes you [man] belie the [Day of] Recompense [i.e., the Day of Resurrection]?
8. Is Allah not the most just of all judges?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Read, [O Muhammad], in the Name of your Lord, Who has created you.
2. He has created man from a clot.
3. Read and your Lord is the Most Generous,
4. Who has taught [writing] with the pen.
5. He has taught man what he did not know before.
6. Truly, man becomes a transgressor [referring to Abu Jahl, a disbeliever who tried to prevent Prophet Muhammad from praying],
7. When he sees himself rich.
8. Truly, to your Lord is the Return.
9. Have you seen him who prevents
10. One from praying [to Allah]?
11. What if he [the one praying] is on the Right Path
12. Or he orders piety?
13. If he [i.e., Abu Jahl] denies [Islam] and turns away,
14. Does he not know that Allah sees [what he does]?
15. If he does not cease, We will catch him by the forelock,
16. A sinful and lying forelock.
17. Let him then call his helpers.
18. We will call the angels of torment.
19. No. [O Muhammad], Do not obey him. And prostrate yourself, and draw near [to Allah].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Truly, We have sent it [i.e., The Quran] down in the Night of the Decree.
2. And what is this Night of the Decree?
3. The Night of the Decree is better than one thousand months [of worship].
4. In it [i.e., that night] angels and Gabriel come down, with their Lord’s Permission, with all [good] things [of mercy and blessings].
5. [That night is] peace [from Allah] until dawn.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Those who disbelieve from among the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] and polytheists were not going to believe until the clear evidence came to them,
2. A Messenger from Allah [i.e., Muhammad] reciting purified pages [i.e., The Quran],
3. Containing straight and correct Laws [from Allah].
4. And the people of the Scripture did not differ except after the clear evidence came to them.
5. And they were commanded not to worship except Allah alone with complete devotion and sincerity and to perform prayer and give zakat. That is the straight and right religion.
6. Truly, those who disbelieve from among the people of the Scripture and polytheists will be in the Fire of Hell forever. Those are the worst of all creatures.
7. Truly, those who believe and do good deeds are the best of all creatures.
8. Their reward with their Lord is Eden Gardens [i.e., Eternal Gardens], under which rivers flow, dwelling in there forever, with Allah pleased with them and them with Him. That is for him who fears his Lord.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. When the earth is shaken so violently [on Resurrection],
2. And the earth throws out its burden [i.e., the dead becoming alive again],
3. And man says [in surprise], “What is the matter with it?”
4. On that Day, it [i.e., the earth] will tell its news,
5. That your Lord has commanded it.
6. On that Day, people will proceed in scattered groups so as to be shown their own deeds.
7. Whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it,
8. And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. By the horses that run,
2. And by them causing sparks at their hoofs,
3. And by them raiding at dawn [for the Cause of Allah],
4. Raising dust all around,
5. Rushing right into the middle of the enemy,
6. Man is truly ungrateful to his Lord,
7. And he is a witness over that [through his words and deeds],
8. And he loves wealth so much.
9. Does he not know [what will happen] when what is in graves is scattered around [i.e., resurrected],
10. And what is in the hearts is made known?
11. Truly, on that Day [of Resurrection], their Lord is Well- Acquainted with them.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. The Striking Hour.
2. What is the Striking Hour?
3. And what do you know about the Striking Hour?
4. [It is] a Day when people will be like moths scattered about,
5. And mountains will be like torn wool.
6. As for him whose good deeds overweigh his evil deeds,
7. He will live a pleasant life [in Paradise].
8. But as for him whose evil deeds overweigh his good deeds,
9. His abode will be a pit.
10. And what do you know about it?
11. [It is] a very hot Fire.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Piling up wealth has diverted you [from obeying Allah],
2. Until you die.
3. No! You will come to know.
4. And no, again. You will come to know.
5. If you knew with certainty, [you would not forget the Hereafter].
6. Truly, you shall see the Blazing Fire,
7. And you shall see it with no doubt,
8. And then, on that Day, you shall be asked about the delights [of this life: whether you were grateful to Allah or not].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. By time,
2. Man is at a loss, indeed,
3. Except those who believe and do good deeds, and urge one another to do good and urge one another to be patient.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Woe to every slanderer and backbiter,
2. Who has gathered wealth and keeps on counting it!
3. He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.
4. No. He will be cast in the destroyer.
5. And do you know what the destroyer is?
6. [It is] the Blazing Fire of Allah,
7. Which burns deep to the hearts,
8. And imprisons them inside it,
9. With them fettered in chains.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Have you [i.e., Muhammad] not seen what Allah did to the people of the elephant? [Referring to Abraha, who intended to destroy Al- Ka’bah].
2. Did He not make their plot a failure?
3. And He sent against them birds in flocks,
4. Striking them with stones of baked clay,
5. And thus He made them like eaten stalks.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. What a Grace from Allah to [the tribe of] Quraish,
2. That they journey in winter [to the Yemen] and in summer [to Syria] [for trade]!
3. So they are to worship the Lord of this House [i.e., Al- Ka’bah in Makkah],
4. Who has fed them after hunger and has secured them after fear.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Have you seen him who denies the [Day of] Recompense?
2. That is he who humiliates the orphan,
3. And does not urge feeding the needy.
4. Woe to those performers of prayer
5. Who delay their prayer [or do not perform it],
6. Who are hypocrites in their deeds,
7. And who hesitate to do even the smallest act of kindness!
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Truly, We have granted you [i.e., Muhammad] Al- Kawthar [i.e., a river in Paradise]. 2. Thus, pray to your Lord [only], and sacrifice [in His Name]. 3. Verily, your enemy is the one who will be cut off [from offspring and the good name].
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Say, [O Muhammad], “O disbelievers!”
2. “I do not worship what you worship,”
3. “And nor are you worshipping what I worship.”
4. “And I will not worship what you have worshipped,”
5. “And nor will you worship what I worship.”
6. “You have your own religion [i.e., disbelief], and I have my own religion [i.e., Islam].”
