1. In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
2. Praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds,
3. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
4. The Ruler of the Day of Recompense
5. You we worship, and You we ask for help.
6. Guide us to the Straight Path,
7. The Path of those whom You blessed, not those whom You are angry with, nor those who are astray.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Alif-Lam-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. This book [i.e., The Quran] is undoubtedly Allah’s word, guidance to those who fear Allah,
3. Who believe in the Unseen, perform prayer, and give in charity of what We [i.e., Allah] have provided them with,
4. And who believe in what has been revealed to you [i.e., Prophet Muhammad] and what was revealed before you, and who believe in the Hereafter.
5. Those are on their Lord’s guidance, and those are the successful.
6. Verily, whether you [i.e., Prophet Muhammad] warn disbelievers or not, they will not believe.
7. Allah has put a seal on their hearts, ears, and eyes, and they will have a great torture [from Allah].
8. And some people say, “We have believed in Allah and the Last Day,” but they are not [real] believers.
9. They think that they deceive Allah and believers, while in fact they only deceive themselves without knowing it.
10. There is a disease in their hearts, and Allah has increased their disease. And they will have a great torment for their lies.
11. And if they are told not to make mischief in the land, they say, “We are peace-makers.”
12. Indeed, they are the mischief makers, but they do not feel it.
13. And if they are told to believe as others did, they say, “Are we going to believe as the fools have?” In fact, they are the fools, but they do not know.
14. And if they meet believers, they say, “We have believed,” but when they are alone with their devils, they say, “We are truly with you; we are only mocking.”
15. Allah mocks at them and lets them wander blindly in their wrong-doing.
16. They are the ones who bought error for guidance; thus, their trade is at a loss, and they are not guided.
17. They are like the one who kindled a fire. When it lighted all around, Allah took away the light and left them in darkness, unable to see.
18. They are deaf, dumb, and blind, unable to return [to the Right Path].
19. Or they are like ones in a rainstorm from the sky with darkness, thunder, and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears for fear of thunder-clap and death. And Allah always encompasses disbelievers.
20. The lightning almost snatches away their sight; whenever it flashes for them, they walk in it, and when it becomes dark, they stand still. Had Allah willed, He would have taken away their hearing and their sight. Verily, Allah is Able to do everything.
21. O people! Worship your allah, Who created you and those before you so that you may fear Him,
22. Who has made the earth a resting place and the sky as a structure, and He sends from the sky water, with which He brings about fruits as a provision for you. Do not take partners with Allah, with you knowing [the truth].
23. And if you [disbelievers] are in doubt about what We have sent down to Muhammad [i.e., The Quran], then bring only one chapter like it, and call your supporters besides Allah, if you are truthful.
24. If you do not do it – and you can never do it – then fear the Fire [i.e., Hell], whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for disbelievers.
25. And give the glad news to those who believe and do good deeds, that their reward will be Gardens under which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a fruit from them [i.e., the Gardens], they will say, “This is what we have been provided with before.” And they will be given similar things, and they will have purified mates, and they will abide there forever.
26. Verily, Allah is not embarrassed to give an example even of a mosquito or more or less. Those who believe know that it is the truth from their Lord. But those who disbelieve say, “What does Allah intend by such an example?” By it, He misleads many and guides many. It is only the rebellious that are misled.
27. Those who break Allah’s covenant after confirming it, disobey Allah, and spread mischief on the earth are the losers.
28. How can you disbelieve in Allah knowing that you were dead [before birth], and then He gave you life, then He causes you to die, and then He gives you life again, and to Him you will be returned?
29. It is He who created for you all that is on the earth, then He rose over towards the heaven, making them seven heavens, and He is All-Knowing of everything.
30. And [remember] when your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to place man on the earth, generation after generation.” They said, “Are You going to place there those who will make mischief there and shed blood, whereas we glorify and sanctify You?” He said, “Verily, I know what you do not know.”
31. And He taught Adam all the names of things and then showed them to the angels, and said, “Tell me the names of these, if you are truthful.”
32. They said, “Glory is to You. We do not know except what You teach us. Truly, You are the All-Knower, the All-Wise.”
33. He said, “Oh Adam! Tell them their names.” When he did, He said, “Did I not tell you that I know the Unseen of the heavens and the earth and that I know what you reveal and what you conceal?”
34. And [remember] when We ordered the angels to prostrate themselves to Adam. All of them did obey except Satan, who refused, was arrogant, and was one of disbelievers
35. And We said, “O Adam! Live with your wife in Paradise, and you both eat of it delightfully wherever you wish, but do not approach this tree lest you should be among wrong-doers.”
36. Then Satan caused both of them to slip [i.e., sin] and caused them to be out from where they were. And We said, “Get down with enmity among you. You will dwell on the earth and have enjoyment there for a while.”
37. Then Adam received some words from his Lord, and He forgave him. He is, truly, the Forgiver, the Most Merciful.
38. We [i.e., Allah] said, “Get down, all of you. When My guidance comes to you, follow it. And whoever does so, there will be no fear on them, nor will they grieve.”
39. “But those who disbelieve and deny Our Signs will dwell in the Fire forever.”
40. O children of Israel [i.e., Jacob]! Remember My favor to you, and fulfill your obligations to Me so that I will fulfill My obligations to you, and Me you must fear.
41. And believe in what I have sent down [i.e., The Quran] confirming what you already have [i.e., The Torah], and do not be the first to deny it, and do not sell My Verses for a cheap price, and Me you must fear.
42. And do not mix the truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth knowingly.
43. And perform prayer, and give zakat [i.e., appointed charity], and bow with those who bow [in submission to Allah].
44. Why do you order people to be righteous and forget yourselves although you recite the Scripture? Do you not understand?
45. And seek help in patience and prayer, which is heavy and hard except for the pious,
46. Who believe that they are going to meet their Lord and that to Him they will return.
47. O children of Israel! Remember My favor to you and that I preferred you to the peoples of the world [in those days].
48. And fear a Day [i.e., the Day of Judgment] when no person can be of benefit to another, nor will intercession or compensation be accepted from him, and nor will he be supported.
49. And [remember] when We saved you from Pharaoh’s people, who were torturing you severely: killing your sons and sparing your women. That was a big trial from your Lord.
50. And [remember] when We separated the sea for you [to walk], and thus saved you, and drowned Pharaoh’s people, with you looking [at them drowning].
51. And [remember] when We appointed Moses for forty nights, and then you took the calf as a god, and you were wrong-doers.
52. Then We forgave you so that you might thank [Allah].
53. And [remember] when We gave Moses the Scripture [i.e., the Torah] and the criterion [of right and wrong] so that you might be guided.
54. And [remember] when Moses said to his people, “O my people! You have wronged yourselves by worshipping the calf; you have to repent to your Creator, so kill the wrong-doers among you. That will be better for you with your Creator.” Then He pardoned you. Verily, He is the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.
55. And [remember] when you [i.e., the people of Israel] said to Moses, “We shall not believe in you unless we see Allah plainly.” Then you were seized with a thunder-bolt while you were watching.
56. Then We resurrected you after your death so that you might thank [Allah].
57. And We shaded you with clouds and sent down on you Al-Mann [i.e., sweet gum or honeydew] and quails, saying to you, “Eat of the good lawful things that We have provided you with.” They did not wrong Us, but themselves they did wrong.
58. And [remember] when We said, “Enter this village and eat at it in delight, and enter the gate in prostration and say, ‘Forgive us,’ and We shall forgive you your sins and shall increase [the reward] for good-doers.”
59. But wrong-doers changed what they had been told, so We sent down upon them a torture from the heaven for what they used to do in disobedience to Allah.
60. And [remember] when Moses asked for water for his people and We told him to strike the stone with his stick, and then twelve springs gushed out. Each group of people knew where to drink. [And it was said to them,] “Eat and drink of Allah’s provision, and do not cause mischief on the earth.”
61. And [remember] when you said, “O Moses! We cannot endure one kind of food. Ask your Lord for us to cause the earth to grow for us herbs, cucumber, garlic, lentil, and onion.” He said, “Do you exchange what is better for what is lower? Get down to any town, and you will find what you ask for.” And they [i.e., the people of Israel] were covered with humiliation and misery, causing Allah to be angry with them for their disbelief in Allah’s Verses and for killing prophets unlawfully. That was because of their disobedience and transgression.
62. Truly, those who believe, Jews, Christians, Sabians, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and does good deeds will have their reward with their Lord, with no fear on them, and nor will they grieve.
63. And [remember], [O people of Israel], when We took your covenant and We raised the Mountain above you [saying to you], “Hold fast to what We have given you [i.e., the Scripture], and remember what it contains so that you may fear [Allah].”
64. Then you turned away. Had it not been for the grace and mercy of Allah, you would have been among losers.
65. And you knew those among you who transgressed concerning the Sabbath. We said to them, “Be despised monkeys.”
66. So We made that punishment an example to that generation and following generations and a lesson for the pious.
67. And [remember] when Moses said to his people, “Allah does order you to slay a cow.” They said, “Are you mocking at us?” He said, “I seek Allah’s refuge from being among the ignorant.”
68. They said, “Ask your Lord to describe it for us.” He said, “He says, ‘It is a cow neither too old nor too young; it is in between,’ so carry out what you are ordered.”
69. They said, “Ask your Lord to describe its color to us.” He said, “He says that it is a bright-colored yellow cow that pleases whoever sees it.”
70. They said, “Ask your Lord to explain to us what it is since all cows look alike; and, if Allah wills, we will be guided.”
71. He said, “Allah says that it is an untrained sound bright yellow cow.” They said, “Now you have brought the truth.” Then they slaughtered it almost unwillingly.
72. And [you the people of Israel] [remember] when you killed a person and disputed over the crime, but Allah uncovered what you were concealing.
73. So We said, “Strike him [i.e., the dead man] with a part of it [i.e., the cow].” Thus, Allah gives life to the dead and shows you His Signs so that you may understand.
74. Then, after that, your hearts became as hard as stones or even harder. Some stones, indeed, allow rivers to gush out from them, some crack to allow water out, and some [stones] fall down for fear of Allah. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.
75. Do you [i.e., Muslims] expect that they [i.e., the people of Israel] will follow your religion when some of them used to hear the Word of Allah and then distort it intentionally?
76. And when they [i.e., the Jews] meet believers they say that they are believers. But when they meet one another in private, they say, “Why do you tell them [i.e., Muslims] about what Allah has revealed [in The Torah about the qualities of Prophet Muhammad]? That would support their [i.e., Muslims’] arguments against you. Do you not understand?”
77. Do they [the Jews] not know that Allah knows what they conceal and what they reveal?
78. And some of them [i.e., the Jews] are illiterate. They do not know the Scripture except through false desires and guessing.
79. So woe is to those who write the Scripture with their own hands and say, “This is the Word of Allah,” for a little price! Woe is to them for what their hands wrote, and woe is to them for what they earn by it!
80. And they [the Jews] said, “The Fire will not touch us except for a few days.” Say, [Muhammad], “Have you got a covenant from Allah, so Allah will not break His covenant, or do you tell about Allah what you do not know?”
81. Yes! Whoever earns a sin and his sin surrounds him will dwell in the Fire eternally.
82. And those who believe [in Allah] and do good deeds will dwell in Paradise eternally.
83. And [remember] when We took a covenant from the children of Israel to worship none but Allah, to be good to parents, kindred, orphans, and the needy, to speak good to people, to perform prayer, and to pay zakat [i.e., appointed charity]. But you turned your backs on [all of] this, except a few of you.
84. And [remember] when We took a covenant from you: not to shed your blood, nor to turn some out of their homes. And you ratified [the covenant] and witnessed to it.
85. Then, you kill one another, drive some out of their homes, and support [their enemies] in sin and aggression. If they come to you as captives, you ransom them although driving them out is prohibited to you. Do you believe in some of the Scripture and reject some? The recompense of whoever among you does so is disgrace in this life and severe punishment on the Day of Judgment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.
86. Those are they who have bought this life at the expense of the Hereafter. Their torture will not be lightened, and nor will they be supported.
87. And We gave Moses the Scripture, We sent Messengers after him, and We gave Clear Signs to Jesus, the son of Mary, and supported him with the Holy Spirit [i.e., Angel Gabriel]. Whenever a Messenger came to you with what you did not like, you became arrogant, belied some, and killed some.
88. And they [i.e., the Jews] said, “Our hearts are wrapped [i.e., unable to hear or understand].” God curses them for their disbelief. They only believe a little.
89. And when a Book [i.e., The Quran] from Allah came to them [i.e., the Jews] confirming what they already had [i.e., The Torah], although they used to invoke Allah [to send Prophet Muhammad] to win victory over disbelievers, and when what they already knew came to them, they disbelieved in it. The Curse of Allah is on disbelievers.
90. What a bad choice they [the Jews] have made: disbelieving in what Allah has revealed [i.e., The Quran] in grudge against whomever Allah wills to send His Grace to! They have caused the anger of Allah with them. And for disbelievers there will be a humiliating torture.
91. And if they [i.e., the Jews] are told to believe in what Allah has revealed [i.e., The Quran], they say, “We believe [only] in what was revealed to us.” They disbelieve in what was revealed after it although it [i.e., The Quran] is the truth, which confirms what they have [in their Scripture]. Say, [Muhammad], “Why did you then kill the prophets of Allah, if you are [true] believers?"
92. And Moses brought you Clear Signs; yet, you took the calf for a god in his absence. And you were wrong-doers.
93. And [remember] when We took your covenant and raised the Mount above you, [saying], “Hold fast to what We have given you and hear [the Word of Allah].” They said, “We have heard and disobeyed.” Their hearts were filled with disbelief for worshipping the calf. Say, “It is so bad what your faith orders you, if you are believers.”
94. Say [to the Jews], “If the Hereafter home is made especially for you [as you claim], then ask for death, if you are truthful.”
95. And they will never ask for it [i.e., death] because of their evil deeds. And Allah is aware of wrong-doers.
96. And you will find them [the Jews] the greediest of all people for life; they are even greedier than polytheists. Each of them wishes to live for one thousand years. But even this long age will not save them from torture. And Allah sees what they do.
97. Say, [O Muhammad], “Whoever [of the Jews] is an enemy to Gabriel [may die in his envy].” He [i.e., Gabriel] brought The Quran down to your heart with Allah’s Permission, confirming what was revealed before, guidance and glad news to believers.
98. Whoever is an enemy to Allah, His angels, His Messengers, Gabriel, and Michael [i.e., the names of two angels], Allah is an enemy to disbelievers.
99. And We have sent down to you [i.e., Muhammad] Clear Signs [i.e., the Verses of The Quran], which are denied only by the rebellious.
100. Is it not the case that whenever a party of them [i.e., the Jews] makes a covenant, another party of them violates it? Most of them, indeed, do not believe.
101. And when a Messenger [i.e., Prophet Muhammad] from Allah came to them [the Jews] confirming what they already have [in The Torah], a group of those given the Scripture ignored the Book of Allah as if they did not know.
102. And they followed what the devils recited [untruly of magic] in Solomon's lifetime. Solomon did not disbelieve, but the devils did, teaching people magic and what was sent down at Babylon to the two angels, Harut and Marut. But they [i.e., the two angels] did not teach anyone [such magic] until they had said, “We are only for a trial, so do not disbelieve.” And people learn from both angels what separates a man from his wife, but, [in fact], they could not harm anyone except with Allah’s Permission. They learn what hurts them and what does not benefit them. They know that those who bought it [i.e., the magic] have no share in the Hereafter. What a low price they sold themselves at if they only knew!
103. And had they believed and feared Allah, a reward from Allah would have been better [for them], if they only knew.
104. O you who believe! Do not say [to Prophet Muhammad], “ra’ina,” but say, “Make us understand and hear.” There will be a painful punishment for disbelievers.
105. Neither disbelievers among the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] nor polytheists like any good to be sent down on you [believers] from your Lord. But Allah chooses for His Mercy whomever He wills. And Allah is of Great Grace.
106. Whatever verse [of The Quran] We abrogate or make it be forgotten, We bring a better one or a similar one. Do you not know that Allah is Able to do everything?
107. Do you not know that the dominion of the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah? And besides Allah you have no protector or supporter.
108. Or do you [i.e., Muslims] want to ask your Messenger [i.e., Prophet Muhammad] as Moses was asked before? Whoever changes faith for disbelief has really gone astray from the Right Way.
109. Many of the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] wish if they only could turn you [Muslims] to disbelief after your faith, out of their envy, although the truth has become clear to them. But, [O Muslims], forgive and pardon [them] until Allah brings His decision. Allah is indeed Able to do everything.
110. Perform prayer and pay zakat [i.e., appointed charity]. And whatever of good you do, you will find it ahead with Allah. Truly, Allah sees what you do.
111. And they said, “Only Jews and Christians will enter Paradise.” Such is their desires. Say, [Prophet Muhammad], “Bring your evidence, if you are truthful.”
112. Whoever submits his face to Allah, being a good-doer, has his reward with his Lord, and no fear is on him, and nor will he grieve.
113. And the Jews said that the Christians are not on the right way, and the Christians said that the Jews are not on the right way, although they both read the Scripture. Such was said by those who did not know. Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning what they were differing about.
114. And who are more unjust than those who forbid the glorification of Allah in mosques and strive for their destruction? Those cannot enter them [i.e., mosques] except in fear. They will have disgrace in this life and a painful torture in the Hereafter.
115. And to Allah belong the east and the west. Thus, wherever you turn [your faces], there is Allah. Allah is, indeed, All-Sufficient, All-Knowing.
116. And they said that Allah has a son. Glory is to Him. He has all that is in the heavens and the earth, and all submit to Him.
117. He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. And if He decrees a matter, He orders it to be, and it is.
118. And those who are ignorant say, “Why does Allah not speak to us or why does a sign [from Him] not come to us?” Such was said by people before them; their hearts are similar. We have made Our Signs very clear to those who really believe.
119. Truly, We have sent you [i.e., Prophet Muhammad] with the truth [i.e., The Quran and Islam], a bringer of glad news [i.e., Paradise] and a Warner [against the Fire]. And you will not be responsible for Hell-dwellers.
120. Neither Jews nor Christians will be pleased with you [i.e., Prophet Muhammad] until you follow their religion. Say, “Allah’s Guidance is the [only true] Guidance.” And if you follow their desires after the knowledge [i.e., Revelation] which has come to you, you will have no protector or supporter against Allah.
121. Those whom We gave the Book [i.e., The Quran] and who recite it as they should do are those who truly believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it is a loser.
122. O children of Israel! Remember My mercy upon you and that I preferred you to all [in that time].
123. And fear a Day [i.e., the Day of Judgment] when no person can avail another, nor can a compensation be accepted from him, nor can intercession be useful to him, and nor can he be supported.
124. And [remember] when the Lord of Abraham tested him with certain commands, which he did fulfill. Allah said [to him], “I will make you a leader on the earth.” Abraham said, “What about my offspring?” Allah said, “Wrong-doers cannot have My covenant.”
125. And [remember] when We made Al-Ka’bah [at Makkah] a place of resort and security for people. And We ordered people to take Abraham’s place as a prayer place, and We commanded Abraham and Ishmael [i.e., his son] to purify My House [i.e., Al-Ka’bah] for those who turn round it, stay [in worship], bow, and prostrate themselves.
126. And [remember] when Abraham said, “O my Lord! Make this city [i.e., Makkah] secure, and provide its people with good provisions, especially those who believe in Allah and the Last Day.” Allah said, “As for him who disbelieves, I shall grant him enjoyment for a while, and later I shall force him to the Fire torment. And what a bad end it will be!”
127. And [remember] when Abraham and Ishmael were establishing Al-Ka'bah foundations [saying], “O our Lord! Accept [our work] from us. Verily, You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.”
128. “O our Lord! Make us submissive to You and make from our offspring a nation submissive to You [as well]. Show us the ceremonies of pilgrimage and forgive us. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.”
129. “O our Lord! And send among them a Messenger to recite Your Verses to them, and teach them the Book and Wisdom, and purify them. You are indeed the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.”
130. And whoever turns away from Abraham's religion befools himself. We have chosen him [as a Messenger] in this world, and he will be among the righteous in the Hereafter.
131. [Remember] when his Lord said to him, “Surrender.” He [i.e., Abraham] said, “I have surrendered to the Lord of the worlds.”
132. And Abraham and Jacob enjoined this submission on their sons and said, “O my sons! Allah has chosen this religion [of monotheism] for you, so do not die except in submission [to Allah].”
133. Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, when he said to his sons, “What will you worship after me?”? They said, “We will worship your God, the God of your forefathers, Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac, One God, and to Him we will submit.”
134. That was a nation that has passed away. They will be rewarded for their deeds, and you for yours. And you will not be responsible for what they used to do.
135. They said, “Be Jews or Christians and you will be guided.” Say, “No. You have to follow Abraham’s monotheistic religion. And he [i.e., Abraham] was not among polytheists.”
136. Say, [O Muslims], “We believe in Allah and what has been sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his twelve sons, and what was given to Moses and Jesus, and what was given to the Prophets from their Lord. All of them are equal, and to Him we have submitted.”
137. If they believe the way you do, then they are guided. But if they turn away, they are in opposition [against you]. And Allah will support you against them. And He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.
138. [Follow] the religion of Allah. Who can offer a religion better than Allah’s religion? We are His worshippers.
139. Say, [O Muhammad, to Jews and Christians], “Do you dispute with us about Allah, Who is our Lord and your Lord? And we have our deeds and you have your deeds. And we are sincere in worshipping Him.”
140. Or do you say that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the twelve sons of Jacob were Jews or Christians? Say, [O Muhammad, to them], “Who knows better: you or Allah? Who is more unjust than he who conceals a testimony which he has from Allah [i.e., Muhammad’s prophethood as mentioned in their Scripture]? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.”
141. That was a nation that passed away. They shall be rewarded for what they did, and you for what you do. And you will not be responsible for what they used to do.
142. The fools among people will say, “Why did they [i.e., Muslims] change their prayer direction [from Jerusalem to Makkah]?” Say, [O Muhammad, to them], “To Allah belong the east and the west. He guides whoever wills [to be guided] to the Straight Way [i.e., Islam].”
143. We [i.e., Allah] have made you [i.e., Muslims] a moderate just nation so that you will be witnesses over people and that the Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] will be a witness over you. And We assigned the previous prayer direction merely to distinguish those who obey the Messenger from those who disobey. It was indeed a heavy test except for those guided by Allah. And Allah shall not cause you to lose your reward for your faith [i.e., prayers towards Jerusalem]. Verily, Allah is the Most Kind, the Most Merciful.
144. [O Muhammad,] We have seen you turning your face towards heaven [in invocation]. We shall assign for you another prayer direction with which you will be pleased. Turn your face towards the Holy Mosque [at Makkah]. Wherever you [i.e., Muslims] are, turn your faces towards it. And the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do.
145. If you, [O Muhammad], were to bring the people of the Scripture all the signs [i.e., proofs], they would not follow your prayer direction, nor would you follow theirs, and nor would they follow each other's prayer direction. And if you follow their desires after the knowledge which you have received, you will be among wrong-doers.
146. Those to whom We gave the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] recognize him [i.e., Muhammad] as they recognize their own sons, but some of them conceal the truth while they know it [since his qualities are mentioned in their Bible].
147. This is the truth from your Lord, so do not be one of those who are in doubt.
148. Every nation has its own prayer direction. Thus, hasten to do all that is good. Wherever you are, Allah will bring you all [on the Day of Judgment]. Allah is certainly Able to do everything.
149. And wherever you are, turn your face [for prayer] towards the Holy Mosque [at Makkah]. It is, indeed, the truth from your Lord, and Allah is not unaware of what you do.
150. And wherever you [i.e., Muhammad] start, face the Holy Mosque [during prayer]. And wherever you [i.e., Muslims] are, face it lest people should have an argument against you. As for wrong-doers, do not fear them, but fear Me so that I will complete My Grace on you and so that you may be guided.
151. We sent a Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] from among you, reciting to you Our Verses, purifying you, teaching you the Book [i.e., The Quran] and the Wisdom [i.e., the Prophet’s sayings], and teaching you what you used not to know.
152. So remember Me [by glorification and obedience] so that I will remember you. And thank Me [for My Favors], and do not be ungrateful.
153. O you who believe! Seek help in patience and prayer. Allah is certainly with those who are patient.
154. And do not say of those killed in the Way of Allah that they are dead. They are, in fact, alive, but you do not perceive.
155. And We will test you with some fear, hunger, and loss of wealth, lives, and products. And give the glad news to those who are patient,
156. Who, when hit with a disaster, say, “We truly belong to Allah, and to Him we will surely return.”
157. Those are blessed and given mercy by their Lord. And those are the truly guided ones.
158. Truly, Al-Safa and Al-Marwa [i.e., two close hills in Makkah] are holy places to Allah. So he who performs pilgrimage or umra does not sin if he goes between them. And whoever does good voluntarily, Allah is the All-Recognizer, the All-Knower, indeed.
159. Verily, those who conceal what We have sent down of Clear Signs and guidance, after We have made it so clear in the Book [i.e., The Quran], will be cursed by Allah and by cursers.
160. As for those who repent, do good deeds, and declare [the truth which they have already concealed], I [i.e., Allah] will accept their repentance, and I am the Forgiver, the Most Merciful.
161. Verily, those who disbelieve and die as disbelievers will surely have the curse of Allah, angels, and all people.
162. They will abide in Hell forever without lightening their punishment nor delaying it.
163. And your God is One God. There is no god but Him. He is the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
164. Verily, the creation of the heavens and the earth, the alternation of night and day, ships sailing through the sea for the benefit of people, what Allah sends down from heaven of water with which the land is given life after its death, living creatures scattered everywhere, and winds and clouds between the sky and the earth are, indeed, Signs [of Allah] for people who understand.
165. Some people take partners besides Allah. They love them as they love Allah. But believers love Allah more [than they love anything or anyone else]. If only wrong-doers, when they see the torture, would know that all power does belong to Allah and that Allah is truly Severe in punishment.
166. At that time, those who were followed will declare their innocence of those who followed them; they will see the torture, and no one will help them.
167. Those who followed will say [on the Day of Resurrection], “We wish that we had another chance so as to declare our innocence of them as they declared their innocence of us.” Thus Allah will show them their deeds as a source of regret for them, and they will never leave the Fire.
168. O people! Eat of what is lawful and good on the earth, and do not follow the steps of Satan, who is an open enemy to you.
169. He [i.e., Satan] orders you to do evil and sin and to say against Allah what you do not know.
170. And if it is said to them [i.e., disbelievers], “Follow what Allah has sent down,” they say, “No. We shall follow what we found our fathers following.” Are they going to do so even though their fathers understand nothing and are astray?
171. And the example of disbelievers is like one who shouts hearing nothing except calls and cries. They are deaf, dumb, and blind; thus, they do not understand.
172. O you who believe! Eat of the good things that We have provided you with, and thank Allah, if you really worship Him.
173. He [i.e., Allah] has forbidden you only dead animals, blood, pork, and animals sacrificed for others than Allah. But if a person is forced [to eat what is forbidden] out of necessity, not intending disobedience or transgression, there is no sin on him. Allah is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
174. Truly, those [Jews] who conceal what Allah has revealed in the Scripture [i.e., The Torah] to buy a small profit eat nothing but fire. And Allah does not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor does He purify them, and they will have a painful torture.
175. Those are the ones who bought error at the expense of guidance, and punishment at the expense of forgiveness. How patient [they will be] to bear the Fire!
176. That is because Allah has sent down the Book [i.e., The Quran] in truth. And those who disputed about the Book are far away in opposition.
177. It is not piety to turn your faces to the east and the west, but piety requires to believe in Allah, the Last Day, angels, the Book, and the Prophets, to give money [in charity], despite loving it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, wayfarers, beggars, and for freeing slaves, to perform prayer, to give zakat, to keep up your covenant if you make a covenant, and to be patient in poverty, illness, and war. Such are true believers, and such are the pious.
178. O you who believe! The law of equality in punishment is decreed for you in the case of murder: the free person for the free person, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. But if the killer is forgiven by the brother [or relative] of the killed person for blood-money, then the blood-money must be paid kindly and fairly. This is an alleviation and mercy from your Lord. Thus, he who transgresses beyond this will have a painful torture [i.e., if one kills the killer after taking the blood-money].
179. This law of equality in punishment saves many lives, O men of understanding, so that you may be pious.
180. It is decreed for you that if death approaches anyone of you, if he leaves wealth, he must make a will to parents and close relatives in accordance with reasonable manners. [This is] a duty upon the pious.
181. So whoever changes the will after hearing it, the sin is on those who change it. Allah is, indeed, All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
182. And he who fears from a testator an act of injustice or wrong-doing and thus makes peace between them, there is no sin on him. Allah is certainly Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
183. O you who believe! Fasting is decreed for you as it was decreed for those before you so that you may be pious.
184. [You must observe fasting] for a fixed number of days. If one is sick or on a journey, he must make up for an equal number of days. For those who find it very difficult to fast, they must feed one poor person [for every day of no fasting]. And whoever does more of good voluntarily, that will be better for him. And if you fast, that will be better for you, if you know.
185. [Fasting is prescribed in] the month of Ramadan, in which The Quran was sent down to be guidance for people and clear guidelines and criteria [that mark right and wrong]. Whoever of you sees the crescent [of the first night of Ramadan] must start fasting. If one is ill or on a journey [during Ramadan], he must fast other days instead. Allah wants to make things easy for you, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. You must complete fasting for the same number of missed days, and you must glorify Allah for His guidance of you so that you may be grateful to Him.
186. And if people ask you, [O Muhammad], about Me, tell them that I am very close [to them through My Knowledge]. I respond to the request of anyone if he invokes Me. Let them submit to Me and believe in Me so that they may be guided.
187. It is allowed for you to have sexual relations with your wives on the night of fasting. They [i.e., your wives] are a protection to you, and you are a protection to them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He has accepted your repentance and has forgiven you. Now you may have sexual relations with them [i.e., your wives], and seek having what Allah has planned for you [i.e., having offspring]. And eat and drink until day is made distinct from night, then fast until sunset. Do not have sexual relations with them [i.e., your wives] while you are confining yourselves for prayers at mosques. Those are the limits set by Allah; do not approach them. Thus Allah shows His Clear Signs to people so that they may be pious.
188. And do not eat up the property of others unjustly, nor bribe judges to eat up some of others’ property sinfully and knowingly.
189. When they [i.e., people] ask you, [O Muhammad], about the new moons [i.e., crescents], say, “They are time indicators for people and for pilgrimage.” And it is not right to enter houses from the back, but the right thing is to fear Allah and enter houses through their proper doors. And fear Allah so that you may succeed.
190. And fight in the Way of Allah those who fight you, and do not transgress. Truly, Allah does not like transgressors.
191. And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out of where they have driven you out. And [their] aggression [against you] is worse than killing. Do not fight them at the Holy Mosque [at Makkah] unless they fight you there. If they do so, kill them. Such is the punishment of disbelievers.
192. But if they cease [fighting you], Allah is truly Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
193. And fight them so as to prevent confusion and so that submission may be to Allah [only]. If they cease, then there should be no aggression except against wrong-doers.
194. The sacred month is for the sacred month [i.e., no fighting in the sacred months, except in self-defense]. As for prohibitions, apply the Law of Equality in punishment. Then whoever aggresses against you, aggress equally against him. Fear Allah, and know that Allah is with the pious.
195. And spend in the Way of Allah, and do not throw yourselves into destruction [by not spending], and do good. Truly, Allah loves good-doers.
196. And perform pilgrimage and umra properly for Allah. But if you are prevented from doing so, sacrifice an animal [like a sheep, cow, or camel]. Do not shave your heads until the animal reaches the place of sacrifice. Whoever of you is ill or has a scalp ailment [that requires shaving] must offer a ransom: fasting [three days] or giving charity [by feeding six of the poor] or offering a sacrifice [of one sheep]. If one is in safety and performing umra in the pilgrimage months, [he is to offer] a sacrifice which he can afford [before pilgrimage]. If he cannot afford it, he must fast three days during pilgrimage and seven after his return [to his home], totaling complete ten. This is for one whose family is not residing at Makkah. And fear Allah, and know that Allah is Strict in punishment.
197. Pilgrimage is in fixed months. If one intends to perform pilgrimage [i.e., he is in the state of ihram], he should not have sexual relations [with his wife], nor should he sin or quarrel [with others] during pilgrimage. Whatever good you do, Allah knows it. And take a provision [with you for the pilgrimage journey], and the best provision is piety. So fear Me, O those of understanding.
198. There is no blame on you if you seek your Lord’s Bounty [by trading during pilgrimage]. When you leave Arafat [i.e., a place near Makkah where pilgrims spend the ninth day of Thu-Alhijjah], glorify Allah at Al-Mash’ar Al-Haram [i.e., Al-Muzdalifah, where a pilgrim must stay the night of the tenth of Thu-Alhijjah]. Glorify Him as He has guided you although you were among those who were astray before that.
199. Then leave the place which people leave, and ask Allah to forgive you. Allah is, indeed, Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
200. When you complete your pilgrimage rituals, remember Allah as you remember your fathers or even more. Some people ask Allah to give them of the bounties of this world, but they will have no share in the Hereafter.
201. But some of them say, “O our Lord! Give us in this world what is good and give us in the Hereafter what is good, and save us from the torture of the Fire.”
202. Those will have a share [in the Hereafter] of what they have earned. And Allah is Swift at reckoning.
203. And glorify Allah during the fixed Days [i.e., three days at Mina during pilgrimage: the 11-13th days of Thu-Alhijjah]. Whoever leaves two days earlier or stays two days later, there is no sin on him if his intention is to do good. And fear Allah, and know that to Him you will be gathered.
204. And of some people there is he who may cause you to admire what he says in this worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness what he has in his heart; yet, he is the most quarrelsome opponent [of Islam].
205. And when he turns away [from you O Muhammad], he does his best to make mischief in the world and destroy crops and cattle. And Allah does not like mischief.
206. And when he is told to fear Allah, his arrogance leads him to more and more of sins. Thus, Hell is enough for him; and what a bad abode it is!
207. And some people do their best in order to please Allah. And Allah is Most Kind to humans.
208. O you who believe! Adhere to Islam perfectly, and do not follow Satan’s footsteps; he is a plain enemy to you.
209. If you sin after you have received the clear guidance [from Allah], then know that Allah is, truly, All-Mighty, All-Wise.
210. Do they [i.e., the children of Israel] want Allah and the angels to come to them in the shadows of clouds? Then the case would be already judged. And to Allah all matters are returned [for judgment].
211. Ask the children of Israel how many Clear Signs We gave them. And whoever rejects Allah’s Favor after it came to him [i.e., denies Islam and sticks to disbelief], Allah is, indeed, Strict in punishment.
212. This worldly life is made fair-seeming to disbelievers, who mock at believers. But those who fear Allah are above them [i.e., disbelievers] on the Day of Resurrection. And Allah provides whomever He wills [with all kinds of rewards] limitlessly.
213. People were one community [i.e., all in belief], and Allah sent Prophets with the glad news [about Paradise] and with a warning [against Hell]. He sent with them the Scripture in truth to judge among people concerning matters of disagreement. The ones who differed about it [i.e., the Scripture] are only the ones who received the Clear Signs, and their differences were due to hatred [i.e., envy and unfairness]. Then Allah guided those who believed [i.e., Muslims] to the truth about what they [i.e., Jews and Christians] disagreed to, with Allah’s Permission. And Allah guides whoever wills [to be guided] to the Straight Way.
214. Or do you think that you will enter Paradise without being tested like those before you? They were afflicted with poverty and some diseases, and they were so severely hit [by the enemy] that even the Messenger [Muhammad] and the believers with him said, “When will Allah's help come?” Allah’s help, is, in fact, very close.
215. They ask you, [O Muhammad], what they should spend. Say [to them], “Whatever of good you spend must be for parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, and wayfarers.” And whatever good you do, Allah is certainly All-Aware of it.
216. Fighting [in defense] is ordained for you [i.e., Muslims] although you dislike it. You may hate something when it is good for you, and you may love something when it is bad for you. And Allah knows, and you do not know.
217. They ask you, [O Muhammad], about fighting in the Sacred Month [i.e., the 1st, 7th, 11th, and 12th months of the Islamic Calendar]. Say [to them], “Fighting in them is a great transgression, but preventing people from the Way of Allah, disbelief in Him, preventing people from reaching the Holy Mosque [at Makkah], and driving out its inhabitants are a greater transgression. Such acts are more serious than murder.” They [i.e., disbelievers] will continue fighting you until they turn you back form your religion [i.e., Islam], if they can. Whoever turns back from his religion and dies as a disbeliever, his deeds will be in vain in this life and the Hereafter. And such will be the dwellers of the Fire forever.
218. Those who believe and those who immigrate and strive in Allah’s Way hope for Allah’s mercy. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
219. They ask you, [O Muhammad], about alcoholic drinks and gambling. Say, “They imply a great sin and benefits for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit.” They ask you about what they should spend. Say, “What is beyond your needs.” Thus Allah gives you Clear Signs so that you may think
220. About this life and the Hereafter. And they ask you about orphans. Say, “It is better to invest their wealth honestly [for them]. And if you mix their wealth with yours, they are your brothers [as long as you are fair and honest]. And Allah knows wrong-doers and good-doers. Had Allah willed, He would have made things more difficult [for you]. Allah is indeed All-Exalted, All-Wise.”
221. And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe, and in fact a slave she-believer is better than a free she-polytheist even though you admire her. And do not let polytheistic men marry your daughters until they believe, and a slave he-believer is better than a free he-polytheist even though you admire him. Those call you to the Fire, and Allah calls you to Paradise and forgiveness, with His Permission. And He makes His Signs so clear that people may remember.
222. They ask you about menstruation. Say, “It is harmful [to make a sexual relation during menstruation]. Stay away, therefore, from women [i.e., your wives] during menses. Do not approach them [sexually] until they are purified [from menses]. If they [i.e., wives] are purified, then you [i.e., husbands] make sexual relations with your wives the way Allah teaches you [i.e., through the vagina only]. Allah, verily, loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves [by washing thoroughly].”
223. Your wives are a tilth for you, so go to your tilth when and how you choose, and send good deeds [in your credit] ahead. And fear Allah, and know that you will meet Him [in the Hereafter], and bear the glad news to believers [concerning Paradise].
224. And do not swear much in Allah’s Name, nor make such swearing an excuse for not doing good or acting piously or making peace among people. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
225. Allah does not blame you for your unintentional oaths, but He blames you for what your hearts have earned. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.
226. Those who take an oath not to approach their wives sexually must observe their oath for four months. But if they change their minds, Allah is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
227. And if they are determined to have divorce, Allah is truly All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
228. Divorced women must wait [before any new marriage] for three menstrual periods. And they are not allowed to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs, if they believe in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands have the full right to take them [the wives] back [during the three menstrual periods] if they want reconciliation. And women have rights [over their husbands concerning life expenses] similar to the rights of their husbands over them [like obedience and respect], but men have one degree over them [i.e., women]. And Allah is All-Exalted, All-Wise.
229. Divorce is [only] twice. After that, either he keeps her kindly or divorces her kindly. It is not allowed for you [i.e., the husband] to get back any part of her bridal-money, except if they both fear that they would go beyond Allah’s limits. If you fear that they both would do so, then there is no sin on either of them if she returns [to him] all or some of her bridal-money to get divorce. These are the limits set by Allah, so do not go beyond them. Whoever does so, he is a wrong-doer.
230. If he divorces her [for the third time], then she cannot be his wife until she marries another husband. If the latter divorces her, there is no sin on both of them if they re-marry each other providing that they can observe Allah's limits. These are Allah’s limits made clear by Him to people who know.
231. And if you divorce women and they have fulfilled the waiting period, either take them back kindly or release [i.e., divorce] them kindly. And do not take them back to hurt them, and whoever does so wrongs himself. And do not mock at the laws of Allah, and remember Allah's Favors on you and what He has sent to you of the Book [i.e., The Quran] and the Wisdom [i.e., the sayings of Prophet Muhammad], by which He teaches you. And fear Allah, and know that Allah knows everything.
232. And if you divorce women and they finish the waiting period, do not prevent them form marrying their ex-husbands if they both agree to re-unite. This is a piece of advice to him who of you believes in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and purer for you. And Allah knows, and you do not know.
233. And the mother must suckle her infant for two complete years if the parents want to complete the suckling period, and the father must provide her with the suitable provision and clothing. No person should be burdened with what is beyond his capability. The mother should not be hurt because of her child, nor should the father. The father's heir has the same duties as the father. If they both [i.e., the two parents] decide on weaning willingly and after consultation, there is no sin on them. And if you want to have a foster suckling-mother for your children, there is no blame on you provided that you pay her the due amount [of money]. And fear Allah, and know that Allah does see what you do.
234. And those of you who die leaving wives, the wives must wait for four months and ten days. After they complete this period, there is no blame on them if they get married. And Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.
235. And there is no blame on you if you make hints of engagement to them [i.e., women] or conceal it in your hearts. Allah knows that you will remember them, but do not meet them [women] secretly unless you say to them what is allowable. And do not make the marriage contract unless they [i.e., women] complete the waiting period [after the husband’s death]. And know that Allah knows what you intend, so fear Him. And know that Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.
236. There is no blame on you if you divorce women before you have sexual relations with them or before you have set bridal-money to them. [In case of divorce], give them a suitable gift: a rich man gives according to his income, and so does a poor man. This is the duty of a good-doer.
237. And if you divorce them before sexual relations with the bridal-money been set, give them half of what has been set, unless she agrees to forgo its due amount or he agrees to give her all her bridal-money. And the latter choice is nearer to piety. And do not forget grace among yourselves. Truly, Allah sees what you do.
238. Observe prayers, especially the middle prayer. And stand before Allah in full submission.
239. If you fear [an enemy], perform your prayer on foot or riding. When you are in safety, perform your prayer as Allah has taught you what you did not know before.
240. And those of you who die leaving wives behind should make a will for their wives [before they die]: a year’s maintenance with a residence. But if they choose not to reside, there is no blame on them for what they do of themselves honorably. And Allah is All-Exalted, All-Wise. [abrogated by 4:12].
241. And divorced women should be given maintenance on a reasonable basis. This is a duty on the pious.
242. Thus Allah makes clear His Signs to you so that you may understand.
243. Do you, [O Muhammad], not remember those who went out of their homes in thousands for fear of death? Allah said to them, “Die.” Then He gave them life. Truly, Allah is of grace to people, but most people do not thank [Allah].
244. And fight in Allah’s Way, and know that Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
245. Who lends Allah a good loan [i.e., good deeds] so that Allah will give him many doubles [of rewards] for it? And Allah is He Who decreases and increases [your means], and to Him you will be returned [on the Day of Resurrection].
246. Do you not remember some of the children of Israel after Moses? They said to one of their prophets, “Name a king for us, and we will fight in Allah’s Way.” He said, “I am afraid that you will not fight if fighting is ordained for you.” They said, “Why are we not going to fight in Allah's Way while we have been turned out of our homes and deprived of our children?” But when fighting was decreed for them, they turned away, with the exception of a few of them. And Allah is All-Knowing of wrong-doers.
247. And their Prophet [i.e., Samuel] said to them, “Allah has appointed Talut a king for us.” They said, “How can he be a king when we are better than he and he is not wealthy?” He said, “Allah has chosen him and has given him more of knowledge and physical stature. And Allah gives authority and power to whomever He wills. And Allah is All-Sufficient, All-Knowing.”
248. And their Prophet [i.e., Samuel] said, “The sign of this authority is that the wooden box will come to you, in which there are tranquility from your Lord and some remnants left by Moses and Aaron, carried by the angles. This is certainly a Sign for you, if you really believe.”
249. When Saul went out with his army, he said, “Allah will test you by a river. Whoever drinks of it, he does not belong to me, except him who takes [only] a handful [of water].” But they drank of it, all except a few. When he and those who believed with him crossed the river, they said, “Today we cannot fight Goliath and his soldiers.” But those who believe that they will meet their Lord said, “How often a small group could defeat a large group with Allah’s Permission!” And Allah is with those who are patient.
250. And when they went forward to meet Goliath and his soldiers, they said, “O our Lord! Give us patience, fasten our feet, and grant us victory over disbelievers.”
251. So they defeated them with Allah’s Permission, and David killed Goliath. And Allah gave David kingship and wisdom [i.e., prophethood], and taught him of what He willed. If Allah had not checked some people by some, the earth would have been filled with mischief. But Allah is of great grace to all mankind.
252. These are the Verses of Allah, which We recite to you [i.e., Muhammad] in truth, and, verily, you are one of the Messengers.
253. We preferred some of those Messengers to some. To some Allah spoke [directly], and He raised some of them some ranks [above others]. And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, Clear Signs, and We supported him with Gabriel. Had Allah willed, people coming after them [Messengers] would not have fought against each other after receiving the Clear Signs, but they differed: some of them believed, and the others disbelieved. Had Allah willed, they would not have fought against one another, but Allah does what He wills.
254. O you who believe! Spend of what We have provided you with before a Day [i.e., the Day of Judgment] on which there will be no selling, no friendship, and no intercession. And disbelievers are the wrong-doers.
255. There is no god but Allah, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer [of all creatures]. Neither slumber nor sleep can seize Him. To Him belongs all that in the heavens and the earth. Who can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows the present and the future of His creatures. And they know nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His authority extends over the heavens and the earth, without feeling tired by preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
256. There is no compulsion in religion; the Right Path has been made distinct from the wrong path. Whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah, he has grasped the strongest bond that can never break [i.e., Islam]. And Allah is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.
257. Allah is the Protector of believers; He leads them from darkness into light, whereas the ally of disbelievers is evil, which leads them from light into darkness. Those are the dwellers of the Fire, in which they will abide forever.
258. Do you not remember the one who disputed with Abraham about his Lord because Allah has given him power? Abraham said, “My Lord is the One Who gives life and causes death.” He said, “I [also] give life and cause death.” Abraham said, “Allah brings the sun from the east; can you bring it from the west?” Thus, the disbeliever was defeated. And Allah does not guide those who are unfair.
259. Or [take] the example of one who passed by an utterly-destroyed town. He said, “How will Allah give life to the people of this town?” So Allah put him in death for one hundred years, then He resurrected him. He [i.e., Allah through an angel] said, “How long did you last in death?” He said, “One day or less.” He said, “No. Your death lasted for one hundred years. Look at your food and drink; they have not changed. And look at you donkey. We have made all this to make you a Sign for people. Look at the bones and [see] how We put them together and clothe them with flesh.” When all was clear to him, he said, “I know that Allah is Able to do everything.”
260. And [remember] when Abraham said, “My Lord, show me how You bring life to the dead.” He said, “Have you not believed?” He said, “Yes, but to have a stronger faith.” He said, “Take four birds, tie them, [slaughter them], put their pieces on different mountains, then call them. They will come to you immediately. And know that Allah is All-Exalted, All-Wise.”
261. Those who spend their wealth in Allah’s Way are like a seed which grows seven ears, each of which has one hundred seeds. And Allah doubles [His reward] to whomever He wills. And Allah is All-Sufficient [for all creatures], All-Knowing
262. Those who spend their wealth in Allah’s Way without boasting or hurting [the feelings of others] will have their reward with their Lord. There will be no fear on them, nor will they grieve.
263. Kind words and pardoning [others] are better than charity followed by injury. And Allah is Rich [i.e., does not need anyone], Most-Forbearing.
264. O you who believe! Do not erase your charity acts by reminders of your generosity or by injury. This would be like one who spends to show off when he does not believe in Allah and the Last Day. He is similar to a rock covered with a thin layer of soil. When heavy rain falls on it [i.e., the rock], it is left quite bare. They can do nothing with what they have earned. And Allah does not guide disbelievers.
265. And those who spend their wealth in order to please Allah and strengthen their own faith are like a garden on a hill. When heavy rain falls on it, it doubles its harvest. And if heavy rain does not fall on it, light rain is enough for it. And Allah is the All-Seer of what you do.
266. Does any of you wish to have a garden of date-palms and vines, under which streams flow, having all types of fruits, while he is in old age with weak children, then it is struck by a fiery whirlwind, which burns it? Thus Allah shows the Clear Signs to you so that you may consider.
267. O you who believe! Spend of the good things which you have lawfully earned, and spend of the good products of the earth. And do not spend of the bad things, which you do not accept unless you close your eyes. And know that Allah is Rich, Praise-Worthy.
268. Satan promises you poverty and orders you to sin, but Allah promises you Forgiveness and Bounty. And Allah is All-Sufficient, All-Knowing.
269. He gives wisdom to whomever He wills. And whoever is given wisdom, he is granted a great deal of good. This is not remembered except by those of understanding.
270. And whatever you spend in charity or whatever vow you make, Allah knows it. And wrong-doers have no supporters.
271. If you reveal your charity acts, that is good. But if you conceal them granted to the poor, that will be better for you, and Allah will expiate you some of your sins. And Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.
272. It is not your duty, [O Muhammad], to ensure their guidance, but Allah guides whoever wills [to be guided]. And whatever good you spend is for your own benefit if you spend it for the sake of Allah. Whatever good you spend, you will be rewarded for it, and you will never be wronged.
273. [Charity is] for the poor restricted [from travel] in Allah’s Way, who cannot move about in the land. The one who does not know them thinks that they are rich owing to their modesty. They can be known by their mark; they do not beg help. And whatever good you spend, Allah knows it very well.
274. Those who spend their wealth [in charity], by night and day, secretly and publicly, will have their reward with their Lord. They shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve.
275. Those who eat usury do not stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except like one touched by Satan and thus led to madness. This is because they said that trading is like usury. But Allah has allowed trading and has prohibited usury. So he who receives his Lord's teaching and stops eating usury shall be forgiven for the past, and it is for Allah to judge him. But whoever returns to eating usury, such will be the dwellers of the Fire forever.
276. Allah will destroy the usury income, and He will increase [one’s wealth] in reward for charity. And Allah does not like every sinful disbeliever.
277. Those who believe and do good deeds, perform prayer, and pay zakat [i.e., appointed charity] will, truly, have their reward from their Lord. No fear shall be on them, and nor shall they grieve.
278. O you who believe! Fear Allah, and abandon whatever usury still due to you, if you are [true] believers.
279. If you do not do so, then get ready for a war against you from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you can get back only your capitals, without wronging others or being wronged.
280. And if the debtor cannot repay, give him more time until he can. And if you remit it in charity, that will be better for you, if you know.
281. And fear a Day when you are forced to return to Allah, when everyone will be paid what he earned, and they will not be wronged.
282. O you who believe! If you contract a debt for an appointed period, have it written by a scribe in justice. The scribe must write as Allah requires him to do [i.e., honestly]. And let the debtor dictate, and he must fear Allah, his Lord, and he must not decrease the debt amount. If the debtor is of poor or weak understanding or cannot dictate, his guardian will dictate in justice. And ask two men to witness the contract. Otherwise, get a man and two women, whom you agree to as witnesses, so that if one of the two women should forget, the other one will remind her. And the witnesses should not refuse when they are called for testimony. And do not hesitate to write the debt, whether small or large, for its fixed date. This is more just with Allah, better as an evidence, and more convenient against your doubts. But if it is a present trade carried out on the spot among you, there is no sin on you if you do not write it. But take witnesses whenever you make a commercial contract. No scribe or witness should be harmed, but if you harm either, it would be a sin on your part. And fear Allah, Who teaches you, and Allah knows everything.
283. If you are on a journey and you do not find a scribe, then there must be a pledge taken. And if one of you entrusts another, then the trustee must give back the trust and must fear Allah, his Lord. And do not conceal the evidence; and whoever conceals it, his heart is sinful. And Allah knows all that you do.
284. To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth. And if you reveal what is in your hearts or conceal it, Allah will hold you accountable for it. [Abrogated by 2:286]. Then He will forgive whomever He wills and punishes whomever He wills. And Allah is Able to do everything.
285. The Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do believers. Each one [of them] believes in Allah, His angels, His books, and His Messengers. They say, “We make no distinction between His Messengers.” And they [also] say, “We hear and obey. Forgive us, our Lord. And to You is the return.”
286. Allah does not burden anyone beyond his ability. He is rewarded for whatever good he has earned, and he is punished for whatever evil he has earned. "Our Lord, do not punish us if we forget or make an error. Our Lord, do not burden us as You burdened people before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, and forgive us, and be Merciful to us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over disbelievers.”
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. Alif-Lam-Meem. [These Arabic letters symbolize the Arabic letters of which the Quranic text is composed.]
2. There is no god but Allah, the Ever-Living, the All-Sustaining.
3. He [i.e., Allah] sent down the Book [i.e., The Quran] to you [Muhammad] in truth confirming the Books before it. And He had already sent down The Torah and The Gospel,
4. As guidance to people. He sent down the criterion [which distinguishes right from wrong, i.e., The Quran]. Those who deny the Signs of Allah will have a great torture. And Allah is All-Exalted, All-Able of Retribution.
5. Verily, nothing can be hidden from Allah, neither in the earth nor in the heaven.
6. It is He Who shapes you in wombs as He wills. There is no god but Him. He is the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.
7. It is He Who sent down the Book [i.e., The Quran] to you [Muhammad]. Some of its Verses are entirely clear, and some are not so [to some people]. Those with doubt in their hearts follow what is not entirely clear seeking disorder and [misleading] interpretations when only Allah knows its [true] interpretation. As for scholars [of religion], they say, “We believe in it [i.e., The Quran]; all [of it] is from our Lord.” This is remembered only by those of understanding.
8. They say, “O our Lord! Do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us [to the Right Way], and grant us mercy from You. Indeed, You are the Bestower [of all that is good].”
9. “O our Lord, You will gather people on a Day about which there is no doubt. Allah, verily, does not break His Promise.”
10. As for those who disbelieve, neither their wealth nor their offspring will avail them against Allah, and they are the fuel of the Fire.
11. [They are] like the people of Pharaoh and those before them. They rejected Our Signs, so Allah punished them for their sins. And Allah is Strict in punishment.
12. Say, [O Muhammad], to disbelievers, “You will be defeated and gathered into Hell. And what a bad abode it is!”
13. There has been a sign for you, [O Jews], in two armies that met in war [i.e., the Battle of Badr]. One army [i.e., the Muslim's army] saw them [i.e., the disbelievers’ army], with their own eyes, twice their number. And Allah supports with His victory whomever He wills. In that there is a lesson for those who can understand.
14. It is made fair-seeming for people to love women, children, hoards of gold and silver, branded horses, cattle, and fertile land. All this is the pleasure of this life, but Allah has the best return [i.e., Paradise] with Him.
15. Say, “Shall I tell you of something superior to this? For the pious, with their Lord there are Gardens under which rivers flow. They will dwell there forever with purified mates and Allah will be pleased with them. And Allah is the All-Seer of all people.”
16. [The pious are] those who say, “O our Lord! We have believed, so forgive us our sins, and protect us from the torment of the Fire.”
17. [They are] those who are patient, truthful, obedient [to Allah], who spend [in Allah’s Cause], and who ask Allah to forgive them in the late night hours.
18. Allah, angels, and those of knowledge have witnessed that there is no god but Allah, Who maintains [the universe] in justice. There is no god but Him, the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.
19. Truly, the religion accepted by Allah is Islam. The people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] did not differ except after [certain] knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves. And whoever rejects the Signs of Allah, Allah is Swift in calling [people] to account.
20. If they dispute with you, [O Muhammad], say, “I have submitted my face to Allah, and so have those who followed me.” And say to the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] and the illiterate [i.e., the idolaters], “Have you submitted [to Allah]?” If they have, they are really guided. But if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the message. And Allah sees all people.
21. Verily, those who reject the Signs of Allah, kill the Prophets unrightfully, and kill those who order people to deal justly should be given the good news of a painful torture [from Allah].
22. Those are the ones whose deeds are in vain in this life and the Hereafter, and they will have no supporters.
23. Have you not seen those who were given a part of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians]? They are called to Allah’s Book to judge among them, but some of them refuse such judgment and turn away.
24. This is because they said, “The Fire will not touch us except for a few days.” They were deceived by their own fabrications in their own religion.
25. How will it be when We gather them on a Day in which there will be no doubt [i.e., the Day of Resurrection], and everyone will be paid out precisely what he earned without any injustice?
26. Say, [O Muhammad], “O Allah, the Lord of power! You give power to whomever You will, and You take power from whomever You will. You give honor to whomever You will, and You take honor from whomever You will. Under Your Authority is all that is good, and You are surely Able to do everything.”
27. “You cause the night to gain on the day, and You cause the day to gain on the night. You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give wealth to whomever You will with no limit.”
28. Believers must not take disbelievers as supporters instead of believers. Whoever does so does not belong to Allah, except if you fear a danger from them. And Allah warns you against Himself. And to Allah is the final return.
29. Say, [O Muhammad], “Whether you conceal what is in your hearts or reveal it, Allah knows it, and He knows all that is in the heavens and in the earth. And Allah is Able to do everything.”
30. On the Day when everyone will find whatever good he did and whatever evil he did brought to account, he will wish that a great distance was between himself and his evil. And Allah warns you against Himself, and Allah is Most Kind to people.
31. Say, [O Muhammad], “If you [really] love Allah, then follow me and Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.”
32. Say, [O Muhammad], “Obey Allah and the Messenger.” But if they turn away, then Allah does not like disbelievers.
33. Truly, Allah chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of Imran above all people.
34. [They are] offspring, one from the other, and Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
35. [Remember] when Imran’s wife said, “O my Lord, I have vowed to You what is in my womb free [from worldly work], so accept this from me. You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.”
36. When she gave birth to her, she said, “O my Lord! I have given birth to a female,” and Allah knows what she has given birth to, “and the male is not like the female, and I have named her Mary. I ask You to protect her and her offspring from Satan, the outcast.”
37. Then her Lord [i.e., Allah] accepted her [i.e., Mary] very well, made her be brought up well, and put her under Zachariah’s care. Whenever he entered her prayer place [to visit her], he found sustenance with her. He said, “From where do you have all this?” She said, “It is from Allah.” Indeed, Allah provides sustenance to whomever He wills without limits.
38. At that time Zachariah invoked his Lord and said, “O my Lord! Grant me from You good offspring. You are, indeed, the All-Hearer of invocation.”
39. Then the angels called him, while he was standing in prayer at the prayer place, telling him, “Allah gives you the glad news of John, who will confirm the Word of Allah and will be noble, chaste, and a Prophet from among the righteous.”
40. He said, “O my Lord! How can I have a son when I am very old and my wife is barren?” He [i.e., the angel] said, “Thus it is; Allah does whatever He wills.”
41. He [i.e., Zachariah] said, “O my Lord! Make a sign for me.” The angel said, “Your sign is not to speak to people for three days except with signals. And remember your Lord very much, and glorify [Him] in the afternoon and in the morning.”
42. And [remember] when the angels said, “O Mary! Allah has chosen you, purified you, and chosen you above the women of the world.”
43. “O Mary! Obey your Lord, prostrate yourself [to Him], and bow with those who bow.”
44. That is of the news of the Unseen which we reveal to you [i.e., Muhammad]. You were not with them when they cast lots with their pens as to who of them should be in charge of Mary, and you were not with them when they were disputing [the matter].
45. And [remember] when the angels said, “O Mary! Allah gives you the glad news of a Word from Him; his name is Christ, Jesus the son of Mary, honorable in this life and the Hereafter, and one of those close to Allah.”
46. “And he speaks to people in the cradle and in manhood [i.e., as a Prophet], and he is of the righteous.”
47. She said, “O my Lord! How can I have a son when no man has ever touched me.” He said, “Thus it is. Allah creates whatever He wills. If He decrees something, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.”
48. And He will teach him [i.e., Jesus] writing, wisdom, The Torah, and The Gospel.
49. And He will make him [i.e., Jesus] a Messenger to the children of Israel [saying], “I [i.e., Jesus] have brought you a Sign from your Lord, that I shape from clay like the figure of the bird and then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird with Allah’s Permission, that I heal the blind and the leper, that I give life to the dead with Allah’s Permission, and that I inform you of what you eat and what you store at your homes. In that there is a Sign for you, if you really believe.”
50. “And I [i.e., Jesus] have come to confirm The Torah and to allow you what has been disallowed to you. And I have brought you a Sign from your Lord. So fear Allah and obey me.”
51. “Allah is indeed my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is the Straight Path.”
52. When Jesus knew that they insisted on disbelief, he said [to his disciples], “Who will help me in the Cause of Allah?” The disciples said, “We are the supporters in Allah’s Cause. We have believed in Allah, and [you] witness that we are Muslims [i.e., submissive to Allah].”
53. “O our Lord! We have believed in what You have sent down, and we have followed the Messenger [i.e., Jesus], so write us with those who bear witness [that Allah is One].”
54. And disbelievers plotted [against Jesus to kill him], but Allah planned too. And Allah is the Best of those who plan.
55. And [remember] when Allah said, “O Jesus! I will take you, raise you to Me, and purify you of the falsities [attributed to you] by disbelievers [i.e., that he is Allah’s son]. I will make those who have followed you superior to disbelievers until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me will be the return of you all, when I judge among you as to what you used to dispute about.”
56. “As for those who disbelieve, I [i.e., Allah] will punish them severely in this life and in the Hereafter, and they will have no supporters.”
57. “And as for those who believe and do good deeds, Allah will pay them their rewards in full. And Allah does not like wrong-doers.”
58. This is what We recite to you [i.e., Muhammad] of the Verses and of the Wise Reminder [i.e., The Quran].
59. The example of Jesus is like that of Adam: Allah created Adam from clay, then He said to him, “Be,” and he was.
60. [This is] the truth from your Lord, so do not be among those who doubt.
61. So whoever disputes with you [with regard to Jesus] after the knowledge that has come to you, say, “Let us gather together your sons and ours, your women and ours, and yourselves and ourselves, then we invoke that the curse of Allah is upon the liars.”
62. Verily, this is the true story [about Jesus]. And there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.
63. If they turn away, Allah does know the doers of mischief.
64. Say, [O Muhammad], to the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians], “Come to a just word between you and us that we worship none but Allah, that we associate none with Him, and that we do not take one another as lords besides Allah.” If they turn away, say, “Bear witness that we are Muslims.”
65. O people of the Scripture! Why do you dispute about Abraham, whereas The Torah and The Gospel were not sent down but after him? Do you not have sense?
66. You have disputed about what you have knowledge about, why do you then dispute about what you have no knowledge about? Allah knows, and you do not know.
67. Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian. But he was a monotheistic Muslim, and he was not one of polytheists.
68. Among all people, the nearest to Abraham are those who followed him, this Prophet [i.e., Muhammad], and those who have believed [i.e., Muslims]. And Allah is the Protector of believers.
69. A party of the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] wish to lead you [i.e., Muslims] astray, but they do not lead astray except themselves without knowing it.
70. O people of the Scripture! Why do you deny the Verses of Allah [mentioned in The Torah and The Gospel about the coming of Prophet Muhammad], whereas you bear witness [to their truth]?
71. O people of the Scripture! Why do you mix truth with falsity and hide the truth while you know [it]?
72. A party of the people of the Scripture said [to another party], “Believe in what has been revealed to believers [i.e., Muslims] in the morning and [then] disbelieve at the end of the day so that they [i.e., Muslims] may disbelieve.”
73. [O Muslims], do not trust anyone except those who follow your religion. Say, [O Muhammad], “The [real] guidance is the Guidance of Allah.” No one can receive like what you have received [from your Lord], and [do not fear] that they may argue with you before your Lord. Say, [O Muhammad], “All the Bounty is, truly, with Allah; He grants it to whomever He wills, and Allah is All-Sufficient, All-Knowing.”
74. He [i.e., Allah] selects for His mercy whomever He wills. And Allah is the Possessor of unlimited bounties.
75. And some of the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians], if entrusted with a lot of money, pay it back [readily], but there are some who if entrusted with one dinar do not pay it back unless you keep on demanding. That is because they say, “There is no sin on us if we betray the ignorant [i.e., Arab pagans].” They invent lies against Allah intentionally.
76. Whoever fulfills his pledge and fears Allah, Allah certainly loves the pious.
77. Verily, those who get a little gain for breaking their covenant with Allah and breaking their oaths shall have no share in the Hereafter [i.e., Paradise]. And Allah will not speak to them, nor will He look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and they will have a great torture.
78. And some of them do distort the Scripture when they read it so that you may think that it is from the Scripture, when it is not [really] so. They say that it is from Allah, when it is [in fact] not from Allah. They fabricate lies against Allah knowingly.
79. It is impossible for a man given by Allah the Book, knowledge, and prophethood to say to people, “Worship me rather than Allah.” On the opposite, [he would say], “Worship Allah because you teach the Book and you study it very well.”
80. He [i.e., the Prophet] would not order you to take angels and prophets as lords [besides Allah]. Would he order you to disbelieve after you have submitted [to Allah]?
81. And [remember] when Allah took the Prophets' Covenant, [saying to them], “Hold to whatever I send to you of the Book and Wisdom, and then I will send a Messenger [i.e., Prophet Muhammad] confirming what you have. You must believe in him and you must support him.” Allah said, “Do you agree and take up My Covenant?” They said, “We agree.” Allah said, “Then bear witness, and I am among the witnesses with you as well.”
82. Whoever turns away after this is one of the rebellious.
83. Do they want a religion other than Allah’s religion? And all that are in the heavens and on the earth have submitted to Him willingly or unwillingly, and to Him all shall be returned [on the Day of Resurrection].
84. Say, [O Muhammad], “We have believed in Allah and what has been sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Jacob, and the offspring of Jacob's sons, and what was given to Moses, Jesus, and the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction among those prophets, and to Allah we submit.”
85. And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him. And he will be in the Hereafter one of the losers.
86. How will Allah guide those who disbelieved after their belief and after they witnessed that the Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] is true and after they received the Clear Signs? And Allah does not guide wrong-doers.
87. Their recompense is that on them is the Curse of Allah, angles, and all people.
88. They will abide in Hell forever, and their torture will not be lightened, nor will it be delayed.
89. As for those who repented after that and behaved aright, Allah is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
90. As for those who disbelieved after their belief and insisted on their disbelief, their repentance will never be accepted of them. And they are those who are astray.
91. Truly, those who disbelieved and died in disbelief will never be forgiven even if they offer what fills the earth of gold as a ransom. Those will have a painful torment, and none will help them.
92. You will never attain [the rank of] piety until you spend [in the Way of Allah] of what you like. And whatever you spend, Allah does know it.
93. All food was allowed to the children of Israel, except what Israel [i.e., Jacob] had disallowed to himself before The Torah was revealed. Say, [O Muhammad], “Bring The Torah here, and read it, if you are truthful.”
94. Whosoever fabricates lies against Allah after this, these are the wrong-doers.
95. Say, [O Muhammad], “Allah has told the truth, so follow Abraham’s monotheistic religion, and he was not of polytheists [i.e., those who believe in more than one god].”
96. Truly, the first house [of worship] assigned to people is the blessed one at Makkah; it is a guidance for all.
97. It has signs such as the place of Abraham. And whoever enters it is safe and secure. And Allah imposed on people the pilgrimage to the House [i.e., Al-Ka’bah at Makkah], on him who can afford it. As for those who deny pilgrimage, Allah is certainly not in need of anyone.
98. Say, [O Muhammad], “O people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians]! Why do you deny the Verses of Allah? Allah is a witness to what you do.”
99. Say, “O people of the Scripture! Why do you turn believers away from the Path of Allah, preferring corruption while you are witnesses [to the truth in your Scripture]? Allah is not unaware of what you do.”
100. O you who believe [in Allah]! If you obey a party of those given the Scripture, they will cause you to return to disbelief after your belief.
101. And how would you disbelieve while Allah's Verses are recited to you and among you is His Messenger [i.e., Prophet Muhammad]? He who holds fast to Islam has been guided to the Straight Path.
102. O you who believe! Fear Allah as you truly should, and do not die except embracing Islam.
103. And hold fast, all of you, to Islam, and do not get divided. And remember Allah's Favor on you: you were enemies and He has filled your hearts with love, and thus you have become brethren owing to His Favor. And you were at the edge of the Fire, and He has saved you from it. Thus Allah shows you His Signs so that you may become guided.
104. And let there be a party from among you who invite to good, order virtues, and forbid evil. Those are really the winners.
105. And do not be like those who became divided and differed among themselves after Clear Signs had come to them. Those will suffer a great torment,
106. On the Day of Judgment, when some faces will be happy and other faces will be sad. As for those with sad faces, [it will be said to them], “Did you disbelieve after your belief ? So taste the torture for your disbelief.”
107. As for those with happy faces, they will dwell forever under Allah’s Mercy [i.e., in Paradise].
108. These are Allah’s Verses, which We recite to you [i.e., Muhammad] in truth. And Allah does not want to wrong anyone.
109. And to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth, and to Allah all matters will be returned.
110. You [i.e., Muslims] are the best nation ever raised up to mankind: you are to order virtues, forbid evil, and believe in Allah. If the people of the Scripture had believed, it would have been much better for them. Some of them are believers, but most of them are rebellious [against Allah].
111. They [i.e., the people of the Scripture] will not hurt you [i.e., Muslims] except slightly. If they fight against you, they turn away, and at last no one will support them.
112. They will be humiliated wherever they are, except when they are under a covenant from Allah or people. They have caused Allah to be displeased with them, and weakness is imposed on them. This is because they denied Allah’s Verses and because they killed prophets unjustly. This is their punishment for their disobedience and for their transgression.
113. They are not all the same. A party of the people of the Scripture are dedicated to justice, recite Allah’s Verses in the night, and prostrate themselves [in prayer].
114. They believe in Allah, the Last Day, order virtues, forbid evils, and hasten to do good. These are among the righteous.
115. And whatever good they do, they will be rewarded for it. And Allah knows best about the pious.
116. As for those who have disbelieved, neither their wealth nor their children will avail them against Allah. Those are the dwellers of the Fire, staying there eternally.
117. What they [i.e., disbelievers] spend in this life is like a very cold wind striking the harvest of a people wronging themselves, so it destroyed it [i.e., the harvest]. Allah did not wrong them, but they did wrong themselves.
118. O you who believe! Do not take as advisors those outside your religion because they do not care for your interests and because they love what you hate. Their hatred of you has been clearly shown by their words, and what their hearts conceal is still more serious. We have made Our Verses clear to you if you [really] understand.
119. Behold! You [i.e., Muslims] love them [i.e., Jews and Christians], but they do not love you. You believe in all Revealed Books, [but they do not believe in The Quran]. If they meet you, they say, “We have believed,” but when they are alone, they bite their finger tips in rage at you. Say [to them], “Die in your rage. Verily, Allah knows best what your hearts conceal.”
120. If something good befalls you [i.e., Muslims], it saddens them [i.e., Jews and Christians]. And if some evil hits you, they are glad at it. If you are patient and fear Allah, their plots will not harm you. Verily, Allah knows best what they do.
121. And [remember] when you [i.e., Muhammad] left your family to place the believers in their battle positions. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
122. And [remember] when two parties from among you [i.e., Muslims] were about to lose their courage, but Allah was their Protector. And in Allah believers must put their trust.
123. And Allah gave you [i.e., Muslims] victory at the Battle of Badr when you were rather weak. Therefore, fear Allah so that you may be thankful.
124. [Remember] when you [i.e., Muhammad] said to the believers, “Is it not enough for you that your Lord supports you with three thousand angels sent down [to help you]?”
125. “Yes, if you remain patient and fear [your Lord]. And even if your enemy rushes at you, your Lord will support you with five thousand distinct angels.”
126. And Allah made it not but good news for you and a message of assurance to your hearts. And victory is only from Allah, the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.
127. [And that occurred] so that He would cut off a part of disbelievers and expose them and, thus, they would return in failure.
128. It is not for you [i.e., Muhammad] to decide. Whether He forgives or punishes them, they are wrong-doers.
129. To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. He pardons whomever He wills, and He tortures whomever He wills. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
130. O you who believe! Do not eat usury in doubles, and fear Allah so that you may succeed.
131. And fear the Fire, which is prepared for disbelievers.
132. And obey Allah and the Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] so that you may get the Mercy [of Allah].
133. And hasten to the forgiveness of Allah and to a Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the pious,
134. Who spend [in Allah’s Way] in prosperity and in adversity, control their anger, and pardon people. And Allah loves good-doers.
135. The pious are those who, if they commit a great sin or wrong themselves, remember Allah and ask Him to forgive them. And who forgives sins but Allah? They also do not insist on their sins while they know.
136. As for those [i.e., the pious], their recompense will be Forgiveness from their Lord and Gardens under which rivers flow, where they dwell forever. And what a good reward it is for good-doers!
137. Many [similar] events occurred [to different nations] before you. Travel through the land and see what was the end of those who belied [Allah and His Messengers].
138. This [i.e., The Quran] is a clear Book to people, guidance, and a source of teaching to the pious.
139. And do not feel weak, nor should you grieve, because you are superior to others [i.e., disbelieves], if you are [real] believers.
140. If a wound [or killing] has touched you, a similar one has touched your enemy. Such are the [ups and downs of] days, which We give to people by turn so that Allah will test believers and take some martyrs from among you. And Allah does not like wrong-doers.
141. And this is so, for Allah wills to test believers and destroy disbelievers.
142. Or do you think that you will enter Paradise before Allah knows those who strove [for His Cause] and knows those who are patient?
143. And indeed you [i.e., believers] wished for death [i.e., martyrdom] before meeting it. Now you have seen it with your own eyes.
144. And Muhammad is not but a Messenger, preceded by Messengers. If he is dead or killed, will you then return to disbelief? Whoever does so, he does not harm Allah in the least. And Allah shall reward those who are grateful.
145. No one dies except with Allah’s Permission and at the assigned term. Whoever wants a reward in this life, We shall give him of it. And whoever wants a reward in the Hereafter, We shall give him of it. And We will reward the grateful.
146. And many a Prophet fought [in Allah’s Way], and many pious companions fought along with him. But they did not become weak, nor did they surrender [to the enemy]. And Allah loves those who are patient.
147. They said nothing but, “O our Lord! Forgive our sins and our going beyond the limits, help us stand firmly [in the battle field], and give us victory over disbelievers.”
148. So Allah gave them the reward of this life and the good reward of the Hereafter. And Allah loves good-doers.
149. O you who believe! If you obey disbelievers, they will turn you back [to disbelief] and you become losers.
150. Allah is your Protector, and He is the Best Supporter.
151. We [i.e., Allah] shall throw terror in disbelievers’ hearts for their associating partners with Allah, a matter which He gave no authority for. Their abode will be the Fire. And what a bad abode it is for wrong-doers!
152. And Allah did indeed fulfill His promise to you when you could [actually] destroy them [your enemy at the Battle of Uhud] until you failed [to fight], disputed about the order [given by Prophet Muhammad], and disobeyed him when He showed you what you love [i.e., the booty]. Some of you desire this world, and some desire the Hereafter. Then He made you divert from your enemy so as to test you. But Allah forgave you, and Allah is of grace to believers.
153. And [remember] when you were climbing the hill, not noticing anyone, with the Messenger [Muhammad] at the rear calling you back. There Allah gave you one distress after another so that you might not grieve for what you had missed [i.e., the booty], nor for what had befallen you [of casualties]. And Allah knows best what you do.
154. Then after the distress, Allah sent down security for you through slumber overtaking a party of you [i.e., believers]. But another party [i.e., hypocrites] did care only for themselves, thinking of Allah unjustly and ignorantly. They say, “Are we to be blamed for what has happened?” Say, [Muhammad], “All the affair belongs to Allah.” They hide in their hearts what they do not reveal to you, saying, “Had it been our fault, none of us would have been killed here.” Say, [Muhammad], “Had you remained at your homes, those decreed to die would have died even in their beds.” [All this happened] because Allah wanted to test what is in your hearts and to purify what is in there. And Allah knows best what hearts conceal.
155. Truly, those who turned their backs when the two armies met [at the Battle of Uhud] were tempted by Satan to sin. But Allah has pardoned them, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful, indeed.
156. O you who believe! Do not be like disbelievers, who said about their brethren who traveled around or went out fighting, “Had they been here with us, they would not have died or been killed.” Allah makes it a source of regret in their hearts. It is Allah, Who gives life and causes death. And Allah sees best what you do.
157. If you are killed or die in the Way of Allah, Allah’s Forgiveness and Mercy are [by far] better than whatever [wealth] they collect.
158. And if you die or are killed, to Allah you shall be gathered [on the Day of Resurrection].
159. Because of Allah’s Mercy, you [i.e., Muhammad] have treated them gently. Had you been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have gone away from you. So pardon them, ask Him to forgive them, and consult them in important matters. If you decide [on something], put your trust in Allah. Verily, Allah loves those who put their trust in Him.
160. If Allah supports you, no one can defeat you. And if He lets you down, who can support you then? And in Allah believers must place their trust.
161. No Prophet should take a part of the booty. And whoever does so, he brings whatever of the booty that he took [illegally] on the Day of Resurrection. Then everyone shall be fully paid for what he has earned, and no one will be wronged.
162. Is one who seeks to please Allah like one who causes Allah to be angry with him? His abode will be Hell. And what a bad abode it is!
163. They are at different ranks with Allah, and Allah sees best what they do.
164. Allah granted believers a great favor when He sent to them from among themselves a Messenger, who recites to them the Verses of Allah [i.e., The Quran], purifies them [form sins], and teaches them the Book [i.e., The Quran] and Wisdom [i.e., Messenger’s sayings and deeds] when they were plainly astray before.
165. When a disaster hits you, although you hit [your enemy] as heavily as twice, you say, “Where is this from?” Say [to them], “It is from yourselves.” Verily, Allah is Able to do everything.
166. And what you suffered when the two armies met [at the Battle of Uhud] was with Allah’s Permission so that He would test the believers.
167. [It was also] for testing the hypocrites, who were told, “Come and fight in the Way of Allah or [at least] defend yourselves.” They replied, “If we knew how to fight, we would follow you.” They were then closer to disbelief than to belief. They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts. And Allah knows best what they conceal.
168. They [i.e., the hypocrites], staying at home, said about their brethren [who went to the battle], “Had they obeyed us, they would not have been killed.” Say, “Escape death, if you are truthful.”
169. Do not think that those killed in the Way of Allah are dead. They are [actually] alive with their Lord, and they have their provision.
170. [They are] very pleased with what Allah has given them of His Bounty, and they rejoice [waiting] for those who have not joined them yet [of their brethren as martyrs]. No fear is to come on them, nor shall they grieve.
171. They rejoice at the Grace and Bounty of Allah. And, surely, Allah does not waste the believers’ reward.
172. Those who obeyed Allah and His Messenger after being wounded, who did aright, and who feared Allah, will have a great reward.
173. As for those [i.e., believers] to whom people said, “Pagans have gathered themselves against you, so fear them,” this increased their faith. And they said, “Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs.”
174. So they returned [from the battle] with Allah's Grace and Bounty, touched by no harm. They intended to please Allah, and Allah is of Great Bounty.
175. It is only Satan, who frightens his supporters. Do not fear them, but fear Me, if you are [true] believers.
176. And do not be grieved, [O Muhammad], by those who hasten to disbelief. They will never harm Allah in the least. Allah does not want to give them a share [of reward] in the Hereafter, and they will have a great torture.
177. Verily, those who exchange belief for disbelief will never harm Allah in the least, and they will have a painful punishment.
178. And disbelievers should not think that Our postponing of their punishment is better for them. We postpone it only so that they may become more and more sinful. And they will have a disgracing torture.
179. Allah will not leave believers in the state which you are in now until He distinguishes the wicked from the good [i.e., true believers and hypocrites]. Nor will Allah show you the Unseen, but Allah chooses of His Messengers whomever He wills. So believe in Allah and His Messengers. If you believe and fear [Him], you will have a great reward.
180. And those who covetously withhold what Allah gives them of His Bounty should not think that it is better for them. On the contrary, it will be worse for them: the things which they withhold will be tied to their necks on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allah knows best what you do.
181. Allah has heard them [i.e., some Jews] saying, “Allah is poor, and we are rich.” We shall record what they said and their killing of [some] Prophets unjustly, and We shall say, “Taste the torture of the Burning Fire.”
182. This is because of what your hands have sent ahead of you [i.e., your evil deeds]. And Allah does not wrong anyone.
183. [As for] those [Jews] who said, “Allah has taken our promise not to believe in any Messenger until he brings us an offering eaten by fire [from the heaven],” say, [Muhammad], to them, “Messengers before me came to you with Clear Signs and with what you said, why did you kill them, if you speak the truth?”
184. If they [some people] belie you, [O Muhammad], many Messengers before you were belied although they came with the Clear Signs, Revealed Books, and the Clear Book.
185. Everyone shall taste death, and you will be paid your recompense on the Day of Judgment. Whoever is saved from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has really won, because this worldly life is nothing but a deceiving enjoyment.
186. You [i.e., believers] shall be tested in your wealth and lives, and you shall hear what hurts you a lot from those given the Scripture before you [i.e., Jews and Christians] and from those who take partners with Allah. But if you continue to be patient and pious, that will be a decisive factor in all affairs.
187. And [remember] when Allah took a pledge from those given the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] that they had to declare it to people and not to hide it [i.e., the coming of Prophet Muhammad as prophesied in their Scripture]. But they threw it behind their backs and exchanged it for a cheap price. How bad what they bought is!
188. Do not think that those [hypocrites] who rejoice at what they have done and who love to be praised for what they have not done can escape punishment; they will have a painful punishment.
189. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is Able to do everything.
190. Truly, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the succession of night and day, there are Signs for people of understanding,
191. Who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides [in prayer and otherwise]. They also contemplate the creation of the heavens and the earth, saying, “O our Lord! You have not created all this in vain. Glory is to You. Save us from the torment of the Fire.”
192. “O our Lord! Whomever You admit to the Fire, You do disgrace him. And wrong-doers have no helpers.”
193. “O our Lord! We have heard someone [i.e., Muhammad] calling us to believe in our Lord, so we have believed. Our Lord, forgive us our sins, and expiate from us our misdeeds, and let us die as righteous.”
194. “O our Lord! Grant us what You promised us through Your Messengers, and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. You never break Your Promise.”
195. So their Lord accepted their invocation [and answered], “I do not waste anyone’s good work, whether of a male or a female, some from some. Those who emigrated, were driven out of their homes, were hurt for My Cause, fought, and were killed will be expiated from their sins, and I will admit them to Gardens under which rivers flow as a reward from Allah. And Allah has the best of rewards.”
196. Do not be deceived by the richness and power of disbelievers.
197. [It is only] a temporary enjoyment [in this life]. Then, their abode will be Hell. And what a bad abode it is!
198. In contrast, the pious will dwell eternally in Gardens under which rivers flow, a gift from Allah. And what Allah has is the best for the righteous.
199. Truly, some of the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] do believe in Allah, in what has been revealed to you [i.e., Muslims], and in what has been revealed to them, submitting themselves to Allah. They do not sell the Verses of Allah at a low price. Those have their reward with their Lord. Verily, Allah is Swift in account.
200. O you who believe [in Allah]! Be patient, and continue to be so, and guard your borders [against the enemy], and fear Allah so that you may succeed.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. O people! Fear your Lord, Who created you from one person [i.e., Adam], and Who created from him his wife [i.e., Eve]. And He has created from them both many men and women. And fear Allah, through Whom you demand your mutual rights. And [keep good relations with] kinship. Verily, Allah observes you very well.
2. And give orphans their due properties, and do not exchange what is good for what is bad. And do not devour their wealth unjustly. This is a great sin, indeed.
3. And if you fear not to be fair to orphan-girls [concerning their dowry], then marry other women as you choose: two, three, or four. If you fear not to be fair, then marry only one or girls possessed by you [,but there are not any more slave-girls now]. That is better for avoiding injustice.
4. And give a woman [on marriage] her due dowry as a gift. If she grants you back some of it, you can have it with no blame on you.
5. And do not let the foolish [like minors and the insane] control their own properties, which Allah has made as a means of living. But feed and clothe them, and treat them kindly.
6. And test orphans until the marriage age. If they prove to be wise and mature, give their property back to them. Do not spend it wastefully before they grow up [into adulthood]. Whoever is rich must not take a wage [for managing the minor’s properties]. But if poor, he may take a reasonable wage. If you return their properties back [to their control], do it in witnesses’ presence. And Allah is All-Sufficient in taking account.
7. Men have a share of what parents or close relatives leave [after death], and so do have women, be small or large. It is a lawful share.
8. And if relatives, orphans, and the needy are present at the division time, give them some of the property, and say to them kind words.
9. And let those [dividing an estate] have the same fear in their hearts as they would have for their own offspring if they left weak offspring behind. Fear Allah, and say just words.
10. Those who eat up orphans’ property unjustly do eat fire into their bellies, and they will suffer in the Blazing Fire.
11. Allah instructs you regarding your children’s [shares of inheritance]. The male’s portion equals that of two females. If they are only daughters, more than two, their share is two-thirds of the inheritance. If there is one daughter only, her share is a half. For his parents, each has one sixth if he leaves children. If he [the deceased] leaves no children and is inherited by parents [only], then his mother has one third. If he has brothers [or sisters], the mother has one sixth. [In all cases, this distribution is carried out] after the payment of legacies and debts. You do not know which is more beneficial to you: your parents or your children. [This distribution] is ordained by Allah. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
12. Of what your wives leave, your share is a half if they leave no child. But if they leave a child, your share is one fourth after paying legacies or debts. Your wives' share is one fourth of what you [i.e., husband] leave [i.e., upon your death] if you leave no child. But if you leave a child, their share is one eighth of what you leave after paying legacies or debts. If the deceased person, a man or a woman, has neither ascendants nor descendants and has left a brother or sister, the share of each is one sixth. But if they are more than two, their total share is one third, after the payment of legacies or debts, causing harm to no one. This is a Commandment from Allah, and Allah is All-Knowing, Most-Forbearing.
13. These are the limits ordained by Allah. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He shall admit him to Gardens under which rivers flow, dwelling there forever. And that is the great success.
14. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger and goes beyond His limits, He will cast him into the Fire forever in a disgraceful torture.
15. As for those of your women who commit illegal sexual intercourse, ask for the evidence of four [reliable] witnesses. If they testify against them, hold them to their homes until they die or [until] Allah ordains for them [another] way. [This verse is abrogated by another one, i.e., Verse 2, Chapter 24].
16. If two of you, a man and a woman, commit illegal sexual intercourse, punish them both. If they repent [later] and behave righteously, leave them. Surely, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
17. Allah accepts the repentance of those who sin out of ignorance and repent soon after that. Allah forgives such persons, and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
18. And repentance is not accepted from him who sins repeatedly until death comes to him and he says, “Now I repent.” Nor is it accepted from those who die in disbelief. For them We have prepared a painful torment.
19. O you who believe! You are disallowed to inherit women against their will. And do not treat them harshly so as to get back some of the dowry which you gave them [upon marriage] unless they commit adultery. And treat them honorably. If you dislike them, you may dislike a thing that Allah brings through it a lot of good.
20. And if you want to replace a wife with another [i.e., divorce her] and have given her a large amount of money [as a dowry], do not take back any of it. That would be injustice and a clear sin.
21. How could you take it back after you have had gone into each other and after they have taken from you a solemn covenant [i.e., the marriage contract]?
22. And do not marry women whom your fathers married before, with the exception of previous marriages. It is certainly a great sin, most hateful, and an evil way.
23. It is prohibited to you to marry your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your father’s sisters, your mother’s sisters, your brother’s daughters, your sister’s daughters, your foster mothers, your foster sisters, your wives’ mothers, and your step-daughters into whose mothers you have gone [in marriage]. But if you have not gone into her, it is allowed to marry her daughter. It is also prohibited to marry your son’s wife and to combine two sisters [in marriage] at the same time, with the exception of previous marriages. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
24. It is also prohibited to you to marry women already married, except those possessed by you. All women beyond these prohibitions are allowed to you provided that you intend marriage, not adultery, and you give them the set dowry. And there is no sin on you if you give her more than the set dowry if you both agree. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
25. And whoever of you does not have the means to marry a chaste believing woman, he may marry a believing girl possessed by others. And Allah knows your faith well. Marry them [i.e., slave-girls, not anymore now] with their guardian's permission, and give them their reasonable dowries, provided that they are chaste, not given to fornication or taking boy-friends. If they commit adultery after their marriage, their penalty is half the penalty of a free unmarried woman. This [arrangement] is possible for one who fears harm [in his religion or health in case he remains unmarried]. But it would be better for you if you restrain yourself [i.e., not marrying a captive or slave-girl]. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
26. Allah wants to show you [what is right and what is wrong], guide you to the ways of those before you, and accept your repentance. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
27. And Allah wishes to accept your repentance, but those who follow their lusts wish that you turn far away [from the Straight Path of Islam].
28. Allah wishes to make your burden light, and man is created weak [concerning his sexual needs].
29. O you who believe [in Allah]! Do not eat up your property unjustly [like through usury or gambling], but you may profit through trading under mutual consent. And do not destroy yourselves [by disobeying Allah]. Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you.
30. And whoever does that [i.e., disobeying Allah] intending aggression and injustice, We will cast him in the Fire, and that is easy for Allah.
31. If you avoid the great sins which you are forbidden to commit, We will forgive you your small sins and admit you to an honorable entrance [i.e., Paradise].
32. And do not wish for what Allah has given to others. Men will be rewarded for what they have done, and so will women. And ask Allah of His Bounty. Verily, Allah knows everything.
33. And to everyone, We have made heirs of what was left by parents and relatives. As for those with whom you have made a pledge, give them a portion [of the inheritance]. Verily, Allah is a Witness over everything.
34. Men are the protectors of women because Allah has preferred some to some [in strength] and because men spend from their means [in maintaining women]. Thus, pious women are obedient [to Allah and their husbands] and guard, in their husband’s absence, what Allah orders them to guard [i.e., their chastity and the husband’s house and property]. As for women who refuse to obey their husbands, advise them [first], [next] do not share their beds [i.e., no sexual intercourse], and [last] beat them [lightly]. If they return to obedience, do not wrong them. Verily, Allah is Most High, Most Great.
35. And if you fear a dispute between them both [i.e., husband and wife], send for an arbitrator from his family and another from hers. If they both wish for reconciliation, Allah will lead them both to it. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, Well-Acquainted with all things.
36. And worship Allah and do not take partners with Him. And be kind to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the neighbor who is a relative, the neighbor who is not a relative, the companion, the wayfarer, and those possessed by you. Certainly, Allah does not like those who are arrogant and boastful.
37. [Allah does not like] those who are misers, order people to be misers too, and hide what Allah has given to them from His Bounties. And We [i.e., Allah] have prepared a humiliating torment for disbelievers.
38. [Allah does not like] those who spend so as to be seen by people [i.e., not for His sake] and who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever takes Satan as a companion gets the worst companion.
39. And what would they have lost if they had believed in Allah and the Last Day and had spent of what Allah has provided to them? And Allah knows them best.
40. Truly, Allah does not wrong [anyone], not even of the weight of an atom. If it is a good deed, He doubles it, and He gives more of great rewards.
41. How then when [i.e., on the Day of Judgment] We bring a witness from every nation [i.e., a Prophet] and We bring you, [O Muhammad], a witness against these people?
42. On that Day those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger [i.e., Muhammad pbuh] will wish that they were buried in the earth, and they will admit all their misdeeds.
43. O you who believe! Do not perform prayer while drunken so as to know what you say, nor while in janaba [i.e., impurity after a sexual intercourse] until you take a bath, excepting travelers [who do not find water]. If you are sick, or on a journey, or have answered the call of nature, or have had a sexual intercourse with the wife, and if you have not found water, then you may perform tayammum [i.e., touching clean earth instead of using water for ablution] with clean earth, and rub with it your faces and hands. Verily, Allah is Oft-Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving.
44. Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture [i.e., the Jews] purchasing the wrong path [instead of Guidance] and wishing that you [Muslims] went astray?
45. And Allah knows your enemies [i.e., the Jews] best. And Allah is Sufficient [for you] as a Protector, and Allah is Sufficient [for you] as a Supporter.
46. Some of the Jews distort the words [of Allah] from their right meanings and say, “We have heard you [i.e., Muhammad], and we have disobeyed. Hear, and it will be better if you cannot hear, and ra’ina [meaning an insult],” playing with words and mocking at Islam. Had they said, “We have heard and obeyed,” and “Listen to us and look at us,” it would have been better for them and more proper. But Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, since they do not believe except a little.
47. O people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians]! Believe in what We have revealed [to Muhammad] confirming what is [already] with you, before We erase the features of faces and turn them [i.e., faces] backward, or We curse them as We cursed the Sabbath-breakers. And Allah's Will is always carried out.
48. Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives what is below this to whomever He wills. And whoever takes partners with Allah, he has committed a great sin.
49. Have you not seen those who sanctify themselves [i.e., Jews and Christians, who say that they only will enter Paradise]? It is Allah who sanctifies whomever He wills. And nobody will be wronged in the least.
50. See how they [i.e., Jews and Christians] fabricate lies against Allah [by saying that they are His only favorites]. And this [fabrication] is enough to be a great sin.
51. Have you not seen those given a portion of the Scripture [i.e., the Jews]? They believe in magic and Satan, and they say to disbelievers that they are better guided to the Right Path than believers [i.e., Muslims].
52. Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed. And whoever is cursed by Allah, you will find no helper for him.
53. Or do they [the Jews] have a share in power? If even so, they give nothing to anyone.
54. Or do they envy people [i.e., Muhammad and Muslims] for what Allah has given them of His Bounty [i.e., The Quran]? We have already given Abraham’s family [i.e., his descendants including Jacob and his sons] the Scripture and wisdom, and We gave them a great kingdom.
55. Some of them believed in him [i.e., Muhammad], and some rejected him. And Hell is enough for punishing [them].
56. Those who denied Our Signs will be surely tortured in the Fire. Whenever their skins are roasted enough, We replace them with fresh skins so that they may taste the torture [again and again]. Verily, Allah is Exalted, All-Wise.
57. As for those who believe [in Allah] and do good deeds, We shall admit them to Gardens under which rivers flow, dwelling there forever. There they will have purified mates, and We shall admit them to shadowy shades [i.e., Paradise].
58. Allah does command you to return the trusts to their owners, and if you judge between people, you must judge in justice. The teaching of Allah is surely the best. Verily, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
59. O you who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger [Muhammad] and those of you in authority. Thus, if you dispute about anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you [truly] believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more proper.
60. Have you not seen those who [falsely] claim that they have believed in what has been revealed to you [i.e., Muhammad] and what was revealed before you [to other Messengers]? They wish to go to false judges for judgment [in their disputes], whereas they were ordered not to accept such judges. But Satan wishes to mislead them far away.
61. And if they are told to come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger [Muhammad], you see hypocrites turn away from you.
62. What will they [i.e., hypocrites] do if a disaster hits them because of their misdeeds? Then they will come to you swearing by Allah [and say], “We meant nothing but goodwill and reconciliation,” [whereas they avoided judging by The Quran].
63. Allah knows what is in their hearts [i.e., the hypocrites], so do not punish them, but preach them, and talk to them effectively.
64. And we have not sent a Messenger but to be obeyed with Allah’s Permission. If they [i.e., hypocrites] had come to you, when they had wronged themselves, and had asked Allah to forgive them and the Messenger had asked Allah to forgive them, they would have found Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
65. By your Lord, they do not [truly] believe until they make you [i.e., Muhammad] judge in the disputes between them, and then they find in their hearts no doubt in your judgment and they completely submit.
66. And if We had ordered them saying, “Kill yourselves or leave your homes,” they would not have done it, except a few of them. But had they done what they are commanded to do, it would have been better for them and stronger for their faith,
67. And then We would have given them a great reward from Us,
68. And We would have guided them to the Straight Path.
69. And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger [Muhammad], they will be with those on whom Allah bestowed His Grace: Prophets, followers of Prophets, martyrs, and the pious. And how excellent these companions are!
70. That is the Bounty from Allah, and Allah is Sufficient as All-Knowing.
71. O you who believe! Be cautious [of your enemy], so go to war [in defense] either in group after group or all together.
72. There is surely among you [i.e., Muslims] he who lingers behind [refusing to fight in Allah’s Cause]. If something bad befalls you, he says, “Allah has favored me by not being present with them [at the battle].”
73. But if a bounty from Allah comes to you [i.e., Muslims], he would say, as if there had been no good ties between you and him, “I wish I had been with them so as to win a lot [of booty].”
74. Let those who sell this life for the Hereafter fight in the Way of Allah. And whoever fights in Allah's Way and is killed or wins victory, We shall give him a great reward.
75. And why do you not fight in Allah’s Way and for the sake of weak men, women, and children who say, “O our Lord! Get us out of this town whose people are unjust, and send us from You a protector, and send us from You a supporter.”?
76. Those who believe [in Allah] fight in Allah’s Way, and those who disbelieve fight in Satan’s way. So fight against Satan’s allies, [for] Satan’s plot is surely weak.
77. Have you not seen those to whom it was said, “Do not fight your enemy now, and perform prayer, and give zakat [i.e., appointed charity].”? When fighting was ordained for them, a party of them, surprisingly, feared people as they fear Allah or even more. They said, “O our Lord! Why have You ordained fighting for us? If only you had delayed it for a near time.” Say, “This worldly enjoyment is short, and the Hereafter is better for one who fears Allah, and you will not be wronged in the least.”
78. Wherever you are, death will reach you even if you are inside high strong castles. If something good reaches them, they say, “This is from Allah.” And if a misfortune reaches them, they say, “This is from you [i.e., Muhammad].” Say, “All is from Allah.” What is wrong with these people? They can hardly understand.
79. Whatever of good comes to you, [O man], is from Allah, and whatever of evil is from you. And We have sent you, [O Muhammad], as a Messenger to all people, and Allah is enough as a Witness.
80. Whoever obeys the Messenger [i.e., Muhammad] has certainly obeyed Allah. And whoever turns away, We have not sent you [i.e., Muhammad] a watcher over them.
81. They [i.e., hypocrites] say [to Muhammad], “We are obedient.” But when they leave you, a party of them plan in the night something different from what they say [to you], and Allah records [through His angels] what they plan. So turn aside from them, and place your trust in Allah. And Allah is Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs.
82. Do they not consider The Quran carefully? If it had been from other than Allah, they would have found many contradictions in it.
83. And if news comes to them [i.e., some people], whether of security or of fear, they [hasten to] broadcast it [without verification]. Had they asked the Messenger or those of authority among them about it, it would have been clearly known by those investigators. But for the Grace and Mercy of Allah upon you [i.e., believers], you, except a few, would have followed Satan.
84. So fight, [O Muhammad], in Allah’s Way. You are only responsible for yourself. And encourage believers [to fight] so that Allah will restrain disbelievers’ evil. And Allah is the Strongest in Might and the Strongest in punishment.
85. Whoever intercedes for something good, he will have his share of its reward. And whoever intercedes for something evil, he will have his share of its burden [i.e., punishment]. And Allah is surely a Witness to everything.
86. And if you are greeted with a greeting, greet back with a better one or with the same. And Allah surely takes account of everything.
87. There is no god but Him. He will surely gather you altogether on the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. And who is more truthful in speech than Allah?
88. Why are you, [O believers], divided about hypocrites into two parties? Allah has made them astray for their misdeeds [i.e., their withdrawal from the Battle of Uhud]. Do you want to guide those made astray by Allah? And whoever is made astray by Allah, you will never find for him a way [for guidance].
89. They [i.e., disbelievers or hypocrites] wish that you disbelieved as they did, so that they and you become equal [in disbelief]. Thus, do not take from them protectors until they emigrate in Allah’s Way [from Makkah to Al-Madeenah]. If they turn back [from Islam in public], then take them and kill them wherever you find them. And never take from them a protector or a helper,
90. Except those who reach a group with whom you have a peace treaty and except those who hate to fight you and also hate to fight their own people. Had Allah willed, He would have directed them to fight you. If they keep away from you, do not fight you, and offer peace to you, then do not hurt or fight them.
91. You will find another group of people [i.e., hypocrites] who wish to have security from both you and their own people. Whenever they are returned to polytheism [here worshipping idols], they dedicate themselves to it. If they do not keep away from you, nor offer you peace, and nor stop fighting you, take them as captives and kill them wherever you find them. On such people We give you a clear authority.
92. And no believer has the right to kill another believer except by mistake. And whoever kills a believer by mistake, he must free a believer and pay a compensation to the deceased's family unless they remit it. If the killed person belongs to a party at war with you and he is a believer, a believing slave must be freed. But if the killed person belongs to a party with whom you have a peace treaty, then a compensation must be paid to his family and a believing slave must be freed. If one does not find the means to do that, he must fast for two successive months. And Allah is surely All-Knowing, All-Wise.
93. And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, in which he is to dwell forever, and the anger and curse of Allah are upon him, and Allah has prepared a great torture for him.
94. O you who believe [in Allah]! If you go fighting in the Way of Allah, be careful [not to kill innocent people]. Do not say to the one who testifies that there is no god but Allah, “You are not a believer,” [and kill him] seeking to get his booties, when there are much more profits with Allah. As such you were before [i.e., concealing your faith], and then Allah bestowed on you His Favors [i.e., the victory of Muslims]. So be careful, and Allah is certainly All-Aware of what you do.
95. Believers who are not disabled [like the blind or the lame] but sit at home [i.e., do not fight] cannot be equal to believers who strive in the Way of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah prefers in ranks the strivers with their wealth and lives to the sitters, and He promised each a good reward [i.e., Paradise]. And Allah prefers strivers to sitters by a great reward.
96. [This great reward is] higher ranks from Him, forgiveness, and mercy. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
97. As for those whom angels take [in death] wronging themselves [by not emigrating with Muslims to Al-Madeenah], angles said [to them], “Why have you stayed here [i.e., did not emigrate]?” They said, “We were weak and helpless.” The angles said, “Was the land of Allah not wide enough for you to emigrate through?” Such people will have Hell as their abode. And what an evil end it is!
98. As for weak men, women, and children who cannot emigrate, nor can they be guided to the way,
99. Such people Allah will forgive. And Allah is Oft-Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving.
100. And whoever emigrates in the Way of Allah, he finds in the land many dwelling places and a great deal of provision. And whoever leaves his home emigrating for the sake of Allah and His Messenger and dies [on his way], Allah will surely reward him. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
101. And when you travel in the land, there is no sin on you if you shorten prayer if you fear an attack from your enemy. Disbelievers are surely your plain enemy.
102. And when you, [O Muhammad], are among them [in the case of war] and you lead them in prayer, let a party of them pray with you, carrying their weapons. When they finish their prostration [i.e., prayer], let them go to the rear positions, and let another party, who has not prayed yet, pray with you, taking their precautions and carrying their arms. Those who disbelieve wish that you neglected your arms and baggage so that they may make a quick attack against you. There is no sin on you, in the case of rain or sickness, if you put away your arms provided that you remain cautious. Verily, Allah has prepared a disgraceful torment for disbelievers.
103. After you finish the [fear] prayer [i.e., prayer at war], remember Allah standing, sitting down, and [lying] on your sides. When you feel secure [of fear and danger], perform prayer [without shortening]. Prayer is surely ordained for believers at fixed times.
104. And do not weaken in pursuing your enemy. If you suffer, they [too] suffer as you do [i.e., injuries and deaths], but you hope from Allah [i.e., Paradise] for what they do not hope for. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
105. Verily, We have sent down the Book [i.e., The Quran] to you [i.e., Muhammad] so as to judge between people as Allah has shown you, so do not defend the treacherous.
106. And ask Allah to forgive you. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
107. And do not argue for those who deceive themselves. Allah, certainly, does not like whoever is a sinful betrayer.
108. They [i.e., thieves, false witnesses, and hypocrites] may hide [their misdeeds and lies] from people, but they cannot hide [anything] from Allah, Who witnesses what they plot in words which He does not like. And Allah encompasses [i.e., knows] what they do.
109. Now [being deceived by what they falsely say], you have argued for them [i.e., the betrayers] in this worldly life. But who will argue for them on the Day of Resurrection, or who will defend them?
110. And whoever does evil or wrongs himself and then asks Allah to forgive him, he will find Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
111. And whoever earns a sin, he earns it against himself. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
112. And whoever earns a fault or a sin and then accuses of it an innocent person, he burdens himself with falsehood and a clear sin.
113. But for Allah’s Grace and Mercy upon you, [O Muhammad], a party of them would have misled you, but [in fact] they mislead none but themselves. And they cannot harm you in the least [by lying to you]. Allah has sent down the Book [i.e., The Quran] to you and Wisdom [i.e., the sayings of Prophet Muhammad], and has taught you what you did not know before [the Revelation]. And Allah’s Grace upon you is great.
114. There is no good in most of their secret talks, excepting one who orders a charity or a good deed or conciliation between people. And whoever does so seeking to please Allah, We shall give him a great reward.
115. And whoever disobeys the Messenger [Muhammad] after guidance is made clear to him and follows a way other than that of believers, We shall keep him on the way which he has chosen, and torture him in Hell. And what a bad destination it is!
116. Verily, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, and He forgives whatever is below this to whomever He wills. And whoever takes partners with Allah, he has gone far astray.
117. Those [who take partners with Allah] invoke none but female gods and invoke none but a rebellious devil.
118. Allah cursed him [i.e., Satan]. And he [i.e., Satan] said, “I will deceive a certain portion of people.”
119. “And I will mislead them, cause them to have false desires, order them to slit the cattle’s ears, and order them to change the religion of Allah.” And whoever takes Satan as a protector instead of Allah, his loss is quite clear.
120. Satan promises them [i.e., his followers] [false promises] and causes them to have false desires. And Satan’s promises are nothing but deceptions.
121. The abode of those [followers] is Hell, and they will find no escape from it.
122. [But as for] those who believe [in Allah] and do good deeds, We shall admit them to Gardens under which rivers flow, where they will dwell forever. This is the true Promise of Allah. And who is truer in promise than Allah?
123. It is not according to your desires, [O Muslims], nor is it according to the desires of the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians]. Whoever does evil will have the recompense for it, and he will not find a protector or supporter besides Allah.
124. And whoever does good, whether a male or a female, in faith, they will enter Paradise, not wronged in the least.
125. And who is better in religion than one who submits himself to Allah, doing good and following Abraham’s monotheistic religion? And Allah took Abraham as a friend.
126. And to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth, and Allah knows everything.
127. And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about women. Say, “Allah teaches you about them and about what is recited to you in the Book [i.e., The Quran] about orphan girls whom you do not give what is ordained for them [with regard to dowry and inheritance] and whom you intend to marry, and about weak children, and that you must defend orphans’ rights with justice. And whatever good you do, Allah is All-Knowing of it.”
128. And if a woman fears from her husband cruelty or desertion, there is no sin on both of them to come to a reconciliation, which is [surely] better [than divorce]. And humans tend to be greedy [and selfish]. If you do good and fear Allah [i.e., accept your wife as she is, in her old age], Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do [i.e., He will reward you].
129. And you can never treat women [i.e., your wives] with perfect justice [in the case of polygamy] even if you are careful to do so. [If you incline to one more than another], do not over-incline leaving the other wife neither married nor divorced. If you treat [your wives] justly and fear Allah, Allah is surely Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
130. But if they [i.e., husband and wife] get divorced, Allah will generously give each from His Bounty. And Allah is All-Sufficient, All-Wise.
131. And to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth. And we have instructed the people of the Scripture before you and you [as well] to fear Allah. And if you disbelieve, then to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth. And Allah is Rich, Praise-Worthy.
132. And to Allah belong all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is All-Sufficient as Disposer of affairs.
133. If Allah wills, He can take you away, O people, [if you disobey Him], and bring others. And Allah is Able to do that.
134. Whoever desires the good of this life, then with Allah is the good of this life and the Hereafter. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
135. O you who believe! Stand firmly for justice as [true] witnesses for Allah's sake, even against yourselves or your parents or your relatives, rich or poor. Allah is better as a Protector to them [than you]. Do not let your bias prevent you from justice [in your testimony]. If you twist your witness [i.e., tell lies] or refuse to witness, Allah certainly knows what you do.
136. O you who believe! Believe in Allah, His Messenger [Muhammad], the Book revealed to His Messenger [i.e., The Quran], and the Scripture revealed before. And whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, he has gone far astray.
137. Verily, as for those who believe, then disbelieve, then believe, then disbelieve, and then continue with more and more disbelief [until their death], Allah shall not forgive them, and nor shall He guide them to the Right Path.
138. Give hypocrites the good news that they will have a painful punishment.
139. Those [i.e., hypocrites] take disbelievers as allies instead of believers. Do they seek honor and glory with them? Verily, to Allah belong all honor and all glory.
140. And Allah has mentioned in the Book [i.e., The Quran] that if you [i.e., Muslims] hear Allah’s Verses being rejected or mocked at, then do not sit with them [the mockers] until they talk about something else. [If you sit with them], then you will be like them. Verily, Allah will gather all hypocrites and all disbelievers in Hell.
141. Those [i.e., hypocrites] wait and observe you. If you win a victory from Allah, they say [to you], “Have we not been with you?” And if disbelievers win [tentatively], they say [to them], “Have we not protected you and defended you against the believers?” Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection. And Allah shall never allow disbelievers to be victorious over believers [in the long run].
142. Surely, hypocrites [think that they] deceive Allah, and Allah makes fair-seeming to them what they do. If they stand for prayer, they do it lazily, and [they pray] to be seen by people. And [during prayer] they do not remember Allah except a little.
143. [They are] swinging between this [i.e., belief] and that [i.e., disbelief], belonging neither to believers nor to disbelievers. And whomever Allah makes astray, you will never find the Right Path for him.
144. O you who believe! Do not take disbelievers as allies instead of believers. Do you wish to offer Allah a clear evidence against yourselves?
145. Verily, hypocrites will be in the lowest level of the Fire, and you will never find a helper for them,
146. Except those who repent, do good deeds, hold fast to Islam, and are sincere in their religion. Such will be considered as believers. And Allah will grant believers a great reward.
147. Why should Allah torture you if you thank Him and believe [in Him]? And Allah is Thankful [to those who thank Him], All-Knowing.
148. Allah does not like that one invokes publicly against another one unless he is wronged. And Allah is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.
149. Whether you reveal something good [done for you] or conceal it or forgive an evil [done to you], Allah is indeed Oft-Pardoning, All-Able.
150. Verily, as for those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messengers, and wish to separate Allah from His Messengers, and say, “We believe in some [Messengers] and disbelieve in some,” and wish to make a compromise,
151. They are the real disbelievers, and We have prepared for them a disgraceful torture.
152. And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers, making no distinction among them, will be given their rewards by Allah. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
153. The people of the Scripture [i.e., the Jews here] ask you [i.e., Muhammad] to cause a book to be sent down from heaven [in one volume, not in parts]. They had asked Moses for something stranger than that: they said [to him], “Show us Allah in public.” Hence, a thunderbolt struck them for their wickedness. Then they took the calf as a god after the Clear Signs [like Moses’ miracles], and We forgave them and gave Moses a clear authority [on them].
154. And for their covenant, We raised the mount over them, and [later] We said to them, “Enter the gate [of Jerusalem] prostrating yourselves [in submission].” And We said to them, “Do not transgress on Saturday.” And We took from them a strong covenant, [but they disobeyed all these orders and broke all the covenants].
155. [Allah’s curse is on them] because of their breaking their covenant [i.e., the Jews’], their denying Allah’s Signs, their killing the Prophets unjustly, their saying that their hearts are wrapped [i.e., cannot understand what Messengers say], but in fact Allah sealed their hearts owing to their disbelief, and thus they only believe so little,
156. And because of their [i.e., the Jews’] disbelief and accusing Mary falsely of a grave charge [i.e., fornication],
157. And because of their [i.e., the Jews'] saying, “We have killed Jesus, the son of Mary, Allah’s Messenger.” But [in fact] they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; the resemblance of Jesus was put over another man. And those who claimed killing him are in doubt about it. They do not have an asserted knowledge of it. They only follow conjecture, and they are not sure of the identity of the killed man.
158. [In fact], Allah raised him [alive] to himself. And Allah is All-Powerful, All-Wise.
159. Everyone of the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] must believe in him [i.e., Jesus, only as a human and a Messenger] before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection, he will be a witness against them.
160. And because of the Jews’ misdeeds, We prohibited to them certain good foods already allowed to them, and because of their hindering many people from [going] on the Right Path,
161. And because of their [i.e., the Jews'] taking usury although they were prohibited from it, and because of their eating up people’s wealth unjustly, We [i.e., Allah] have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
162. But those among them who know their religion very well and believers [as well] believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you. As for those who perform prayer, give zakat [i.e., appointed charity], and believe in Allah and the Last Day, We shall give them a great reward.
163. Verily, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], as We revealed to Noah and the Prophets after him. And We [also] revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the offspring of Jacob’s sons, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon. And We gave the Psalms to David.
164. There are Messengers whom We have told you, [O Muhammad], about [in The Quran] and Messengers whom We have not told you about. And Allah spoke to Moses directly.
165. [We sent] Messengers bearing the glad news [about Paradise] and warning [against the Fire] so that people should have no plea against Allah after Messengers. And Allah is All-Exalted, All-Wise.
166. But Allah bears witness to what He has sent down to you, [O Muhammad]. He has sent it down [i.e., The Quran] conveying His Knowledge, and angels witness too. And Allah is All-Sufficient as a Witness.
167. Verily, those who disbelieve and hinder [people] from Allah’s Path have gone far astray.
168. Truly, as for those who disbelieve and wrong themselves [by their disbelief], Allah will not forgive them, nor will He guide them to any way,
169. Except the way to Hell, where they will abide forever. And that is easy for Allah.
170. O people! The Messenger [Muhammad] has come to you with the truth from your Lord, so it is better for you to believe. And if you disbelieve, to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
171. O people of the Scripture! Do not go beyond the limits concerning your religion, nor should you say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah Jesus, the son of Mary, is [only] the Messenger of Allah and His Word bestowed on Mary and a spirit created by Him. Hence, believe in Allah and His Messenger, and do not say, “Three.” Stop this, and it will be better for you. Allah is One. Glory is to Him above having a son. To Him belong all that exist in the heavens and all that exist in the earth. And Allah is All-Sufficient as Disposer of affairs.
172. The Messiah [i.e., Jesus] will never refuse to be [even] a slave of Allah, nor will the angels who are close [to Allah]. And whoever arrogantly refuses [to do so], He will gather them all to Him [on the Day of Resurrection].
173. As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, He will give them their [due] rewards in full and will give them more of His Bounty. But as for those who arrogantly refuse [to worship Him], He will let them have a painful punishment, and they will find no protector or helper besides Allah.
174. O people! A convincing proof [i.e., Muhammad] has come to you from your Lord, and We have sent down to you a clear light [i.e., The Quran].
175. As for those who believe in Allah and hold fast to Him [i.e. obey Him], He will admit them to His Mercy [i.e., Paradise] and Grace [i.e., reward] and will guide them to Him by the Straight Path [i.e., The Quran].
176. They ask you, [O Muhammad], about kalalah [i.e., leaving no ascendants or descendants upon death]. Say [to them], “Allah instructs you about it. If a man dies leaving no child but having a sister, she gets half of what he leaves. If a woman dies leaving no child but having a brother, he gets all her inheritance. If there are two sisters, they both get two-thirds of what her brother leaves. If there are brothers and sisters, the male gets twice the female’s share.” Allah clarifies all this to you lest you should stray. And Allah knows everything.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
1. O you who believe! Fulfill your obligations [i.e., covenants or contracts]. You are allowed to eat the meat of cattle [i.e., camels, sheep, and cows] except what will be prohibited to you [like blood, dead animals, and pork]. You are disallowed to hunt while in ihram [i.e., state of readiness before pilgrimage]. Verily, Allah orders whatever He wills.
2. O you who believe! Do not allow what Allah disallows, nor should you start fighting in the Sacred Month, nor should you forget animals to be sacrificed, nor should you forget garlanding such animals. Do not fight those coming to the Sacred House [at Makkah] seeking their Lord's bounties [through trade] and pleasing Allah. If you are out of ihram, you are allowed to go hunting. Do not let your hatred of those who [once] prevented you from the Sacred Mosque [at Makkah] make you transgress against them. Help one another in righteousness and piety, and do not help one another in sin and aggression, and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is of strict punishment.
3. Disallowed to you [for food] are these: dead animals, blood, pork, what is slaughtered without mentioning Allah’s name on it, a strangled animal, what is killed by a violent blow, what is killed by a headlong fall, what is killed by goring horns, what is partly eaten by a wild animal unless you slaughter it [before it dies], and what is slaughtered on stone-altars. It is also disallowed to use arrows seeking luck or making decisions. All that is disobedience [to Allah]. Today disbelievers are in despair of your religion [i.e., they failed to make you abandon Islam], so do not fear them, but fear Me. Today I have perfected your religion for you, and I have completed My Favor to you, and I have chosen for you Islam as a religion. Whoever is forced by hunger [to eat of those disallowed meats] not intending to sin, verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
4. They ask you, [O Muhammad], about what is allowed to them. Say, “[All kinds of] good foods are allowed to you. Concerning animals [like dogs and birds] that you have trained [to catch] as Allah instructed you, eat of what they catch for you, but mention the name of Allah [when you send the animal], and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Swift in reckoning.
5. Today, all lawful good foods are allowed to you, and the food of the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] is [also] allowed to you, and yours is allowed to them. You are allowed to marry chaste believing women and chaste women of the people of the Scripture provided that you give them their dowries intending chastity, not taking them as girl-friends. And whoever disbelieves, his work becomes in vain, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.
6. O you who believe! If you intend to perform prayer, wash your faces and forearms up to the elbows, rub your heads, and [wash] your feet up to the ankles. If you are in janabah [i.e., impurity after sexual intercourse], purify yourselves [by taking a bath]. But if you are ill, or on a journey, or have answered the call of nature, or have had a contact with women [i.e., your wife], and do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth [i.e., ablution replacement in the absence of water], and rub your faces and hands with it. Allah does not want to put you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you and to complete His Grace on you so that you may be grateful.
7. And remember Allah’s Grace on you and His Covenant with which He bound you when you said, “We hear and we obey.” And fear Allah; verily, Allah knows the secrets of your hearts.
8. O you who believe! Submit to Allah, and be just witnesses. And do not let your hatred of anyone prevent you from being just [to him]. Be just, and that is nearer to piety. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.
9. Allah has promised those who believe and do good deeds [that] they will have forgiveness and a great reward.
10. But those who disbelieve and reject Our Signs will be the dwellers of Hell.
11. O you who believe! Remember Allah's Grace on you when some people plotted to hurt you, but He prevented them [from doing so]. Fear Allah, and in Allah believers must place their trust.
12. And Allah took the covenant from the children of Israel [i.e., Jacob], and We chose twelve leaders from among them, and Allah said, “I shall support you if you perform prayer, pay zakat [i.e., appointed charity], believe in My Messengers and support them, and lend Allah a good loan [i.e., spend in His Cause]. [If you carry out all that], I will expiate your sins from you and admit you to Gardens under which rivers flow. Whoever disbelieves after this, he has gone astray from the Straight Path.”
13. Because of their breaking their covenant [with Allah], We cursed them and hardened their hearts. They [intentionally] misexplain the Words [of Allah], and they have deserted a part of what they were required to do, and you, [O Muhammad], will be always exposed to their plots and deceit, with the exception of a few of them. So forgive and pardon them. Allah loves good-doers, indeed.
14. And from those who call themselves Christians, We took their covenant [to obey Allah]. But they [also] deserted a part of what they were required to remember. So We let enmity and hatred grow among them [i.e., Christians] until the Day of Resurrection. And Allah will inform them of what they used to do.
15. O people of the Scripture! Our Messenger [Muhammad] has come to you to show you a lot of what you used to conceal of the Scripture, ignoring a lot [if it is not important to be shown]. Allah has sent you a light [i.e., Prophet Muhammad] and a clear Book [i.e., The Quran].
16. Allah guides with it [i.e., The Quran] to the ways of peace whoever seeks to please Him. And with it He gets them out of darkness into light with His Permission, and He guides to the Straight Path [i.e., Islam].
17. They are disbelievers, those who say that Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary. Say, [O Muhammad to them], “Who can prevent Allah if He wills to destroy the Messiah, son of Mary, and his mother, and all those on the earth?” To Allah belongs all the dominion of the heavens and the earth and what is between them. He creates whatever He wills. And Allah is Able to do everything.
18. The Jews and Christians say, “We are Allah’s children and beloved ones.” Say [to them], “Why then does He punish you for your sins?” You are nothing but humans among those whom He created. He forgives whomever He wills, and He punishes whomever He wills. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and to Him is the return [on the Day of Resurrection].
19. O people of the Scripture! Our Messenger [Muhammad] has come to you to clarify [things] to you after a long period after [the last] Messenger [i.e., Jesus], lest you should say, “We have received no one [i.e., no Messenger] to bear the glad news, nor to warn us.” Now you have had a Bringer of the glad news and a Warner. And Allah is Able to do everything.
20. And [remember] when Moses said to his people, “O my people! Remember Allah’s Grace on you when He made Prophets and kings from among you, and He gave you what He had not given to anyone before.”
21. “O my people! Enter the Holy Land [i.e., Palestine] which Allah has assigned to you [at that time], and do not turn back [escaping from war], lest you should return in defeat.”
22. They said, “O Moses! This land is inhabited by very strong people, and we will never enter it until they get out of it. If they get out, then we will enter.”
23. Two men, who feared Allah and on whom Allah bestowed His Grace, said, “Attack them at the gate. If you enter through it, then you are victorious. And in Allah put your trust, if you are [true] believers.”
24. They said, “O Moses! We will never enter it as long as they are in it [i.e., Jerusalem or Palestine]. So you and your Lord go and fight [them]. We are sitting here [waiting for the result].”
25. He said, “O my Lord! I have no authority except on myself and my brother, so judge between us [i.e., Moses and his brother] and this rebellious [i.e., disobedient] people.”
26. Allah said, “It [the Holy Land] is disallowed to them for forty years, during which they wander around [in the desert]. And do not feel sorry for the rebellious, [O Moses].”
27. And, [O Muhammad], tell them the story of Adam’s two sons in truth. They each offered a sacrifice [to Allah]. The sacrifice of one was accepted [by Allah], whereas the other’s sacrifice was not accepted. He [i.e., the one whose sacrifice was not accepted] said [to his brother], “I will kill you.” He replied, “Allah accepts only from the pious.”
28. “If you stretch your hand to kill me, I will not stretch mine to kill you. I fear Allah, the Lord of the worlds.”
29. “I intend to make you bear your sin and my sin, and thus you become one of the dwellers of the Fire, and this is the recompense of wrong-doers.”
30. [In spite of all this being said], he decided to kill his brother, and he killed him, and thus he became one of the losers.
31. Then Allah sent a crow searching earth so as to show him how to bury his brother’s dead body. He said, “Woe to me! Could I not be [at least] like this crow and bury my brother’s dead body?” And he became one of those filled with regret.
32. Because of this, We ordained for the children of Israel that if one kills anyone, not in retaliation of murder nor because of mischief-making, this would be like killing all people, and that if one saves anyone, this would be like saving all people. And Our Messengers came to them with clear Verses; yet, many of them do go beyond the limits [set by Allah].
33. The recompense of those who fight against Allah and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is to be killed, or be crucified, or to make their hands and feet be cut off at opposite sides, or to be exiled from the land. That is a disgrace for them in this life, and in the Hereafter they will have a great torment.
34. [That is so] with the exception of those who repent before falling into your power. And know that Allah is truly Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
35. O you who believe! Fear Allah, and seek the means to please Him, and strive in His Cause so that you may succeed.
36. Verily, as for those who disbelieve, if they had had all that is in the earth and had offered it to ransom themselves of the torment of the Day of Resurrection, it would not have been accepted of them. And they will have a painful punishment.
37. They [i.e., disbelievers] will wish to get out of the Fire, but they will never be out of it, and they will have an everlasting torment [there].
38. As for a male thief and a female thief, cut off their hands [at the wrist] for what they have committed, a punishment from Allah, and Allah is All-Exalted, All-Wise.
39. And whoever repents after his crime and do good deeds, Allah accepts his repentance. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
40. Do you not know that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth? He punishes whomever He wills and He forgives whomever He wills. And Allah is Able to do everything.
41. O Messenger [Muhammad]! Do not be grieved by those who hurry to disbelief of those who say that they have believed only with their tongues without having faith in their hearts [i.e., hypocrites]. And of the Jews there are some who love to listen to lies and to listen to people who have not come to you yet [i.e., your enemies]. They [intentionally] distort the Word [of Allah]. They say [to one another], “If you are given this judgment [by Muhammad], then accept it. Otherwise, beware.” Whomever Allah wants to put in error, you can do nothing for him against Allah. Those are the ones whose hearts Allah does not will to purify. There is a disgrace for them in this life, and in the Hereafter they will have a great punishment.
42. They [the Jews] like to listen to lies and to eat up whatever prohibited [like bribery and usury]. If they come to you, [O Muhammad], then judge between them, or turn away from them. If you turn away from them, they will not harm you in the least [because they do not intend to accept your judgment]. If you judge, judge between them with justice. Verily, Allah loves those who are just.
43. But how do they [i.e., the Jews] ask you to judge when they have The Torah, which has Allah’s legislation? Even after they seek your judgment, they turn away. Such people are not [true] believers.
44. We have sent down The Torah with guidance and light, with which Prophets, who submitted to Allah, judged for the Jews. So did rabbis and priests, for they were entrusted with Allah’s Scripture and were witnesses to it. So, [O Jews], do not fear people, but fear Me, and do not sell My Verses at a cheap price. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, such are disbelievers.
45. And We ordained for them [i.e., Jews] in The Torah: “Life for life, eye for eye, nose for nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal.” And whoever remits the retaliation in charity, it will be an expiation [of his sins]. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, such are unjust.
46. And We sent, after the Prophets to the people of Israel, Jesus, son of Mary, confirming what is already there [i.e., The Torah]. And We gave him The Gospel as guidance and light, confirming The Torah, as guidance and instruction to the pious.
47. Let the people of The Gospel judge according to what Allah has revealed in it. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, such are the rebellious.
48. And We sent down the Book [i.e., The Quran] to you, [O Muhammad], in truth, confirming the Scripture before it and dominating it. Therefore, judge between them by what Allah has revealed, and do not follow their bias diverting away from the truth that has been revealed to you. To each of you, We made a law and a way. Had Allah willed, He would have made you [all] one nation [with one religion], but He did that so as to test you in what He has given you [i.e., the different books]. So [you humans] hasten to obey Allah [i.e., accept The Quran]. To Him is the return of you all, when He will inform you of what you used to disagree about.
49. And judge between them, [O Muhammad], by what Allah has revealed, and do not follow their vain desires. And beware of them lest they should diverge you away from some of what Allah has revealed to you. And if they [i.e., disbelievers or hypocrites] turn away, then know that Allah wills to punish them for some of their sins. And many people are indeed rebellious.
50. Do they seek the laws of the pre-Islamic period? And who is better in judgment than Allah for true believers?
51. O you who believe! Do not take the Jews and Christians as allies. They are allies [i.e., protectors] of one another. And whoever of you [i.e., Muslims] allies with them is one of them. Verily, Allah does not guide wrong-doers.
52. And you see those whose hearts have a disease [i.e., hypocrisy] hasten to befriend them [i.e., Jews and Christians] saying, “We are afraid that a disaster may befall us.” Perhaps Allah may bring a victory [to Muslims] or an outlet decided by Him, and they [i.e., hypocrites], hence, will regret what they have hidden in their hearts.
53. And those who believe will say, “Are these [hypocrites] the ones who swore strongly that they are with you [i.e., Muslims]?” All their deeds will be in vain, and they [hypocrites] will be losers.
54. O you who believe! Whoever of you turns back from his religion, Allah will bring a people whom He loves and who love Him, humble to believers, stern and strict to disbelievers, and striving hard for Allah’s Cause, without fearing the blamers’ blame [in defending truth and justice]. That is Allah’s Grace which He gives to whomever He wills. And Allah is All-Sufficient [in His Grace], All-Knowing.
55. Surely, your Protector, [O Muslims], is Allah, His Messenger, and those who believe, who perform prayer, and give zakat [i.e., appointed charity] in full submission to Allah.
56. And whoever takes Allah, His Messenger, and believers as protectors, the party of Allah will be victorious.
57. O you who believe! Do not take as protectors [i.e., allies] those who were given the Scripture before you [i.e., Jews and Christians] and disbelievers, who take your religion [i.e., Islam] as a mockery and fun. And fear Allah, if you really believe.
58. And if you [i.e., Muslims] call for prayer, they take it as a mockery and fun. That is because they do not understand [Islam].
59. Say, [O Muhammad], “O people of the Scripture! Do you criticize us for anything but our belief in Allah, and in the revelation sent to us, and in the revelation sent to you before, and in the fact that most of you are disobedient?”
60. Say, [O Muhammad], “Shall I inform you of a recompense from Allah worse than that? Those whom Allah cursed and became angry with, and those some of whom He transformed into the likes of monkeys and swine, and those who worshipped evil are worse in rank and more astray from the Straight Path.”
61. And if they [i.e., hypocrites] come to you, they say, “We believe,” when [in fact] they came to you as disbelievers and left you as disbelievers. And Allah knows best what they conceal.
62. And you see many of them hasten to sin, aggression, and eating up others’ wealth unjustly. How evil their deeds are!
63. Why do rabbis and priests not forbid them from sinful speech and unlawful eating up of others’ rights? How evil their behavior is!
64. And the Jews say, “Allah’s Hand is tied up [i.e., a miser].” Their hands are tied up, and they are cursed for what they have said. His Hands are stretched out [in generosity], and He spends as He wills. What has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], from your Lord does increase the disobedience and disbelief of many of them. And We have set enmity and hatred among them until the Day of Resurrection. Whenever they set out the fire of war, Allah extinguishes it. They seek to make mischief in the world, and Allah does not like mischief-makers.
65. And if the people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians] had believed and feared Allah, We would have expiated their sins from them and admitted them to the Gardens of delight [i.e., Paradise].
66. And if they had followed The Torah, The Gospel, and what has been sent down to them [i.e., The Quran] from their Lord, they would have been given abundant provisions from above and from under their feet. Some of them are on the Right Path, but many of them do evil deeds.
67. O the Messenger [i.e., Muhammad]! Convey [to people] what has been revealed to you from your Lord. And if you do not do so, then you have not conveyed His Message. And Allah will protect you from people. Verily, Allah does not guide those who disbelieve.
68. Say, [O Muhammad], “O people of the Scripture! You have nothing [of religion] until you follow The Torah and The Gospel and what has been sent down to you from your Lord [i.e., The Quran].” And what has been revealed to you from your Lord, [O Muhammad], will increase many of them in their rebellion and disbelief. So do not feel sorry for those who disbelieve.
69. Surely, those who believe, Jews, Sabians, and Christians, whoever believe in Allah and the Last Day and do righteous deeds are not to fear, nor are they to grieve.
70. We took the covenant of the children of Israel [to obey Allah] and We sent Messengers to them. Whenever a Messenger came to them with what they did not like, they belied him or killed him.
71. And they thought that there would be no bad consequences [of their misdeeds]. They became blind and deaf [to guidance]. Then Allah forgave them, but yet many of them became deaf and blind [again]. And Allah is the All-Seer of what they do.
72. Those who say that Allah is the Messiah son of Mary have disbelieved. The Messiah said, “O children of Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” Whoever takes partners with Allah, Allah has forbidden Paradise to him, and his abode will be the Fire. And for wrong-doers there will be no supporters.
73. Those who say that Allah is the third of three have disbelieved. There is no god except One God [i.e., Allah]. If they do not cease saying such, a painful torment will certainly befall disbelievers among them.
74. Will they [i.e., Christians] not repent to Allah and ask Him to forgive them? And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
75. The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a Messenger preceded by many [other] Messengers. And his mother was only a believer [in Jesus’ prophethood]. They both used to eat [like humans]. See how We offer evidence to them [i.e., Christians], but yet see how astray they are.
76. Say, [O Muhammad, to polytheists], “Do you worship besides Allah what cannot harm or benefit you, whereas Allah is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower?”
77. Say, [O Muhammad], “O people of the Scripture [i.e., Jews and Christians]! Do not go beyond the limits in your religion falling in falsity [by taking Jesus as God, not as a Messenger]. Do not follow the vain desires [and ideas] of people straying before, who caused many to get astray, and who themselves got astray far from the Straight Path [i.e., the truth or Islam].”
78. Those from among the children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed [by Allah] as was revealed to David and Jesus, son of Mary. That was because of their disobedience [to Allah] and their aggression [at Allah’s Law].
79. They [i.e., Jews] used not to forbid one another from doing evil. Their deeds were real evil.
80. You see many of them allying with disbelievers. They forwarded so many sinful deeds to themselves, so that Allah became very angry with them. And in torture [in the Hereafter] they will abide forever.
81. And if they had believed in Allah and the Prophet [i.e., Muhammad] and what was revealed to him [i.e., The Quran], they would not have taken disbelievers as protectors. But many of them are rebellious.
82. Actually, you will find the Jews and polytheists as the strongest in enmity of all people to believers [i.e., Muslims]. And you will find Christians as the nearest in love to believers. That is because there are priests and monks among them [i.e., Christians], and because they are not arrogant.
83. And if they [i.e., Christians] listen to what was revealed to the Messenger [Muhammad], you see their eyes filled with tears because of their recognizing the truth [in The Quran]. And they say, “Our Lord, record us among the witnesses [who have accepted the revelation to Muhammad].”
84. “Why do we not believe in Allah and the truth which came to us [i.e., The Quran]? And we wish that Allah would admit us [to Paradise] with the righteous people.”
85. So because of what they said, Allah rewarded them with Gardens, under which rivers flow, abiding there eternally. And that is the reward of good-doers.
86. As for those who disbelieve and reject Our Signs, they will be the dwellers of Hell.
87. O you who believe! Do not forbid the good things which Allah has allowed to you, and do not transgress the limits [set by Allah]. Verily, Allah does not like transgressors.
88. And eat of what Allah has provided for you, lawful and good, and fear Allah, in Whom you believe.
89. Allah will not punish you for your unintentional oaths, but He will punish you for your intentional oaths. The expiation is feeding ten poor persons of the average food with which you feed your family, or clothing them, or liberating a slave [if there are any around]. If one cannot afford it, he is to fast three days. That is the expiation of your [intentional] oaths if you swear, and observe your oaths. Such is how Allah makes clear His Signs to you so that you may be grateful [to Him].
90. O you who believe! Intoxicants [i.e., alcoholic drinks], gambling, animals sacrificed for idols, and arrows seeking luck are sinful deeds and of Satan’s handwork, so abandon them in order that you may succeed.
91. Satan wishes to place among you enmity and hatred through alcoholic drinks and gambling, and he wishes to turn you away from remembering Allah and from prayer. So will you stop them [both now]?
92. And obey Allah and obey the Messenger [Muhammad], and beware [of what is prohibited]. If you disobey, then know that Our Messenger’s duty is only to convey [Our Message] very clearly.
93. There is no sin on those who believe and do good deeds for what they ate [or drank before prohibition] if they fear Allah [by avoiding what He has forbidden] and believe and do good deeds, and then they fear Allah and believe, and then they fear Allah and do good deeds. And Allah loves good-doers.
94. O you who believe! Allah wills to test you with some game that you may get with your hands [if near] or your lances [if far] [i.e., prohibited hunting during pilgrimage] so that He knows who fears Him unseen [i.e., in private]. And whoever transgresses after that [i.e., this prohibition by Allah], he will have a painful punishment [on the Day of Judgment].
95. O you who believe! Do not kill the game during ihram [i.e., a special state for 'umra or pilgrimage]. Whoever of you kills it intentionally, his recompense is an offering of an equivalent eatable animal [i.e., sheep, goat, or cow] brought to the Ka’bah, as judged by two just men from among you [who both decide whether he should offer an equivalent animal or an equivalent value], or feeding poor people for expiation, or its equivalence of fasting, in order that he may taste the consequence of his disobedience [to Allah]. Allah forgives what is past [i.e., sinning before embracing Islam or before prohibition]. But whoever returns to sin again, Allah will take retribution from him. And Allah is All-Exalted, All-Able of Retribution.
96. It is allowed to you [to eat] what you fish, eaten by you and by travelers [away from the sea], but land-game is forbidden to you in the state of ihram [for ’umra or pilgrimage]. And fear Allah [i.e., obey Him], to Whom you will be gathered back [on the Day of Resurrection].
97. Allah has made the Ka'bah, the Sacred House, a security asylum for people [i.e., for worshipping Allah]. [And you also have to observe] the Sacred Month, offerings of animals, and garlanded animals. That is for you so as to know that Allah knows what is in the heavens and the earth and that Allah is the All-Knower of everything.
98. Know that Allah is Strict in punishment and that Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
99. The duty of the Messenger is only to convey [the Message of Allah]. And Allah knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
100. Say, [O Muhammad], “What is good and what is bad [of deeds, things, foods, money, persons] cannot be equal even though you may be impressed by the abundance of what is bad. So fear Allah, O people of understanding, so as to succeed [in both lives].”
101. O you who believe! Do not ask about things which, if they are explained to you, may displease you. But if you ask about a Quranic revelation, it will be made clear to you. Allah has forgiven what is before [the prohibition]. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.
102. Some people before you used to ask such [unnecessary] questions, but then they rejected the answers [i.e., teachings of Allah].
103. Allah has not ordained things like baheerah, sa’ibah, waseelah, or ham [i.e., types of camels dedicated to idols]. But those who disbelieve fabricate lies against Allah, and most of them do not understand [the truth].
104. If it is said to them [i.e., disbelievers], “Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger [Muhammad],” they say, “What we found our fathers following is quite enough for us.” Is it so even though their fathers had neither knowledge nor guidance?
105. O you who believe! Take care of yourselves. Those astray cannot harm you if you are aright [after you enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong]. To Allah is the return of you all, when He will inform you of what you used to do.
106. O you who believe! When death approaches one of you, to make a bequest, get for testimony two just men from among you [if residing] or from outside you if death approaches you while on a journey. Detain the two witnesses after prayer, and let them both swear by Allah if you have doubt [concerning their testimony], “We wish for no worldly profit, even though he [i.e., the beneficiary] is a relative, and we do not hide the testimony. If we do so, we are then of the sinful.”
107. If it is found that they both are sinful [i.e., lied about the bequest], then get another two witnesses to replace the first two, nearest in kin to the deceased. Let them both swear by Allah, “We affirm that our testimony is truer than theirs, and we have not gone beyond the limits [i.e., do not lie]. Otherwise, we should be among wrong-doers.”
108. That [swearing] pressures them to present the testimony in its true form or else other oaths will be admitted after theirs. And fear Allah and listen [i.e., obey Allah], and Allah does not guide those who are rebellious.
109. [On the Day of Judgment], Allah will gather all the Messengers together and say to them, “What was the response [of people to you]?” They will say, “We have no knowledge [of this]. You are the One Who knows the Unseen.”
110. [Remember] when Allah will say, “O Jesus son of Mary! Remember My Grace on you and on your mother, when I supported you with Gabriel, so that you could speak to people in [your] cradle and in maturity [conveying Allah’s Message], and [My Grace] when I taught you writing, wisdom, The Torah, and The Gospel, and [My Grace] when you could make of clay the bird’s like with My Permission and then you breathed into it and it became a [living] bird with My Permission, and you could heal the blind and lepers with My Permission, and you could give life to the dead with My Permission, and [My Grace] when I prevented the children of Israel from hurting you [when they plotted to get you crucified] although you came to them with clear proofs [i.e., miracles] and the disbelievers among them said, ‘These [i.e., your miracles] are nothing but clear magic.’ ”
111. And when I inspired Jesus' disciples to believe in Me and My Messenger, they said, “We have believed, and witness that we are Muslims [i.e., in submission to Allah].”
112. When the disciples said, “O Jesus son of Mary! Can your Lord send down to us a table [i.e., a meal] from heaven?” He [i.e., Jesus] said, “Fear Allah, if you are [truly] believers.”
113. They said, “We wish to eat from it, and to be of stronger faith, and to know that you have told us the truth [about Allah and yourself], and to be witnesses to it.”
114. Jesus son of Mary said, “O Allah, Our Lord! Send down to us a table [i.e., a meal] from heaven that will be a lesson for the first and the last of us and be a Sign form You, and provide us with sustenance, for You are the Best of Sustainers.”
115. Allah said, “I am sending it down to you, but whoever of you disbelieves after this, I will punish him with a torment with which I will punish none of all creatures.”
116. And remember when Allah will say, “O Jesus son of Mary! Did you say to people, ‘Worship me and my mother besides Allah?’ ” He will say, “Glory is to You! It is not for me to say what is not right for me [to say]. Had I said it, You would have known it. You know what is in my inner-self, but I do not know what is in Yours. Verily, You are the All-Knower of the Unseen.”
117. “I said to them only what you commanded me [to say]: ‘Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.’ And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them, but when You raised me up, You were the Witness over them. And You are the Witness to everything.”
118. “If you punish them, they are your creatures [and slaves]. And if You forgive them, You are the All-Exalted, the All-Wise.”
119. Allah will say, “This is a Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness. They will be in Gardens under which rivers flow, abiding their eternally. Allah is pleased with them, and they with Him. That is the great success.”
120. To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is in them. And He is Able to do everything.
